O
n behalf of my fellow musicians, the staff and the board of trustees of the Colorado Symphony, I would like to welcome you to Boettcher Concert Hall. I have been Principal Percussionist since 1985 and have enjoyed participating in the musical growth of this fabulous orchestra. I have been privileged to serve on many different committees including the Artistic, Negotiating, Finance and Orchestra Committees. It is great to see the collaborative model working so well for the Colorado Symphony. We are very excited to have Andrew Litton as our new Music Director and look forward to many years of wonderful music-making with him. One of the enjoyable aspects of my job is the widely diverse programming that we offer. We could be playing a Mahler symphony one day and collaborating with DeVotchka the next. Our season offers something for everyone, from classical to rock and roll, and everything in between. Our musicians are extremely versatile and easily switch hats as needed. Part of my job is to represent the Colorado Symphony in a small group that performs chamber music in schools for children throughout the Denver metropolitan area. It’s great to see the joy and surprise in the kids’ faces as they hear the instruments up close. For some of these children, this is their first exposure to symphonic music. Our goal is to develop life-long listeners with a love for live performances. We rehearse during the day in an empty hall and are always thrilled to play for live audiences. Thank you for being here. If you listen closely, you will hear A-R-R-O-W spelled in musical notes, while the rhythm spells “arrow” in Morse code. The composition debuted in 2013 and we now use it as our musical logo in advertisements and on our website. Maestro O’Neil is working to expand the original overture into a full orchestral composition. Together, we have created a new partnership committed to innovation. The Future in Mind Why is education so important to the Colorado Symphony? The answer is a no brainer. The musicians of the Colorado Symphony are a brainy bunch. Every single member of the orchestra has spent countless hours studying and practicing, learning scores and perfecting a range of skills that culminate in flawless performances. According to recent research, musicians are brainy because they play music – an idea with exciting implications for the future of education and the performing arts. Over the past decade, a mountain of data has illustrated the sometimes surprising ways in which music shapes us, starting with our brains. Moving along a continuum that gets stronger with time, music can positively affect everything from IQ to mood. For example: •C hildren with three or more years of training on a musical instrument demonstrate advanced motor skills, verbal and nonverbal reasoning, and auditory discrimination, according to a 2008 study by researchers at Harvard University and Boston College. • S cores on the SAT rise incrementally for each year of high school music instruction, according to the College Board. •M usicians who practice daily scored significantly higher on tests of mental function than people with little or no musical training, according to a study by St. Andrew’s in Scotland, suggesting that even moderate amounts of musical activity have a positive impact on brain function. Of course, music’s benefit extends beyond the brain. Young people who participate in music activities in and outside of the classroom do better in school, are more likely to

graduate on time and attend college. Whether or not a child follows a path leading to an orchestra chair or another career in music, early exposure to music can increase their chances for success and enjoyment at every stage of life. Knowing all of this, can you imagine what would happen if quality music education were available to every single boy and girl in Denver and across Colorado? How might our future work force, our culture, our city look, sound and function if every citizen had access to the transformative power of music? As a resource and partner to the community, the Colorado Symphony is actively engaged with these and other questions. Education has been central to the orchestra’s mission for more than seventy years, as field trips to Boettcher Concert Hall have been a tradition for generations. Music education is key to living our mission, enriching our community – and securing our future. How do we serve the youth, and the future, by providing access to high-quality music education that supports whole-child development? How do we support the schools, teachers and school districts by providing tools and experiences that build on
the school-day experience? And how do we ensure the future of the Colorado Symphony by engaging new audiences in ways that are exciting, relevant and fun? One way is to continue to build on the success of our highly popular Colorado Symphony Kids program, which is informed by music teachers as well district arts coordinators from across metro Denver. This season, we welcomed more than 30,000 elementary, middle and high school students to Boettcher Concert Hall, with concerts that span everything from the music of Latin America and French Impressionism to math and the natural cycles of life. As funding for field trips and arts-based experiences has declined in recent years, our commitment to students of all backgrounds has increased. Colorado Symphony youth concerts are provided at no cost to schools with a high percentage of Title I students, one of the leading indicators of childhood poverty. More than 60% of students who attend Colorado Symphony Kids youth concerts receive scholarships; transportation assistance is also available to qualifying schools. The response from teachers is overwhelmingly positive. continued on page 18

Conrad Kehn of the Playground Ensemble leads the Very Young Composers program at Englewood Elementary School. The program launches at Cole Arts and Sciences Academy in February, in partnership with the Colorado Symphony. “Please continue to give kids in the metro area this opportunity,” wrote Betsy McGurk, music teacher at Virginia Court Elementary School in Aurora, after receiving a scholarship for a group of fifth-grade students. “I can understand the financial commitment this effort must take but please know that our students
Petit Musique and Once Upon a Time The Petit Musique program introduces the joy of a 16-person chamber ensemble to children and their parents and teachers, in local programs presented close to home. This spring’s program, “The Three Bears,” runs April 22-May 20 at venues across metro Denver. Presented throughout the year, the Once Upon a Time series brings Colorado Symphony musicians into schools to share musical versions of classic and contemporary folk tales for children from preschool to second grade. benefit in so many ways far beyond the obvious ones. I have been bringing students to hear you for nearly ten years and I have students in high school and beyond who come to me and tell me, ‘I remember when you took us to hear the symphony. That was awesome!!!’” Exciting things are ahead, as the Colorado Symphony launches two initiatives designed to broaden and deepen our impact on Colorado youth. First piloted in December in partnership with Denver TV8, the Distance Learning Project will eventually provide broadcasts of youth concerts to teachers and classrooms, creating a virtual experience of a live youth concert; eventually, we envision making these broadcast available to schools in rural and remote communities. And in February at Cole Arts and Science Academy in Five Points, we will launch the Very Young Composers, which teaches students as young as eight to create original pieces of music, using expressive tools available to all children. These compositions are then performed for students, teachers and family by professional orchestra musicians. Originally developed by bassist Jon Deak, former CSO

Composer in Residence and children’s advocate at the New York Philharmonic, the Very Young Composers is currently active at schools in Manhattan and around the world. In Denver, the Colorado Symphony will join with the Playground Ensemble, composed of faculty from Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, to bring the program to more students and schools. We have lots of ideas about why these programs are important: supporting the whole-child development of the youth, educators and families of our community is not only good for our community, it’s good for the future of symphonic music. Who knows what will happen when we make these types of programs available to more and more children? When we all do our part to support the development of our children, starting with their young minds – and their brains? We can’t wait to find out.

MASTERWORKS BIOGRAPHIES JEFFREY KAHANE, conductor Equally at home at the keyboard or on the podium, Jeffrey Kahane has established an international reputation as a truly versatile artist, recognized by audiences around the world for his mastery of a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven to Gershwin, Golijov and John Adams. Currently in his 17th season as music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Kahane concluded his tenure as music director of the Colorado Symphony in June 2010, and for ten seasons, was music director of the Santa Rosa Symphony, where he is now conductor laureate. He has received much recognition for his innovative programming and commitment to education and community involvement with all three orchestras and received ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming for his work in both Los Angeles and Denver. During the 13/14 season, Kahane and his newly formed trio with violinist Joseph Swensen and cellist Carter Brey appear at Ravinia, Chamber Music Northwest, Music@Menlo and La Jolla Music Society Summerfest festivals and at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, CA. Kahane’s recent and upcoming European engagements include play/conduct programs with the Camerata Salzburg, Hamburg Symphony and the Real Philharmonic de Galicia in Spain as well as appearances at the Meck-Pomm Chamber Music Festival in Germany. Jeffrey Kahane resides in Santa Rosa with his wife, Martha, a clinical psychologist in private practice. They have two children: Gabriel, a composer, pianist and singer/songwriter and Annie, a dancer and poet.

agreement with Deutsche Grammophon at the age of 15, his debut recording on the prestigious label features Mozart’s Piano Concertos K. 466 & 467 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under Christian Zacharias. Nominated for a Juno Award for classical album of the year 2013, the CD was described by The New York Times as “pristine, lyrical and intelligent […] direct, unmannered and fresh.” Lisiecki’s second DG album, released in April 2013, features Chopin’s Études op. 10 and op. 25. Recognized for his poetic and mature playing, Lisiecki has been awarded many prestigious awards. In 2013, he received the Young Artist Gramophone Award and the Leonard Bernstein Award of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival; in 2011, Jeune Soliste des Radios Francophones; and in 2010, Révélations Radio-Canada Musique. In 2012 he was named UNICEF Ambassador to Canada after being a National Youth Representative since 2008. Lisiecki’s performances have been broadcast on CBC Canada, BBC Radio, Austrian Radio, French Radio, German Radio, Luxembourg Radio, and Polish Radio, as well as on French Television 3 and on TV 1 and 2 in Poland. He was featured in the CBC “Next!” series as one of the most promising young artists in Canada, and in the 2009 Joe Schlesinger CBC National News documentary about his life: “The Reluctant Prodigy.” In May 2013 the German ZDF featured Jan in the news show “Heute Journal.”

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES ADÉS: Three Studies from Couperin Scored for flute/alto flute, flute/bass flute, clarinet, bassoon, two horns, one trumpet, timpani, bass marimba, bass drum, two anvils, roto-toms, and strings. Duration is 12 minutes. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony. The Couperins were to French music as the Bachs were to German music: for two centuries, one of the most prominent names in the field. Throughout the 1600s and 1700s, their names and music were ever-present and ever-respected. For the Bachs, Johann Sebastian (16851750) was the greatest; for the Couperins, it was François (1668-1733). Even in his own time he was known as “Le Grand,” in part to distinguish him from his uncle also named François, but also in recognition of the quality — and quantity — of his music. Although he was also an organist, serving in that capacity for Louis XIV, François Le Grand was most associated with the harpsichord, as performer, as teacher, and as composer. Couperin published four separate collections of harpsichord pieces, each including four to five dozen descriptively named solo pieces. Three of these pieces were borrowed by English composer Thomas Adés (b. 1971) as melodic inspiration for his orchestral suite Three Studies from Couperin. The work was commissioned by the Basel Chamber Orchestra and premiered in Switzerland April 21, 2006. It is scored for strings with alto flute, bass flute, and a varied assortment of percussion and mallet instruments. Adés’ selected instruments allow an expressive feature of which the original harpsichord was unequal: the holding of longer sustained notes, so that different tones can blend together to highly varied effect. Adés’s orchestral work takes Couperin’s often intricately layered keyboard lines and parcels them out amongst his orchestral players, making even more of the contrasts between those lines than Couperin could with only one player at his disposal. Moreover, the diverse instruments bring quite different colors to the mix. For example, Adés calls for alto and bass flutes, though not the standard flute; those two varieties of flute differ in more than just pitch, allowing Adés to shade the results as he desires. This is especially useful in that he does not always restrict himself to Couperin’s original harmonies, a fact more easily perceived with the different instrumental flavors. Additionally, he divides his string ensemble into two separate groups that do not duplicate each other’s music. In all, Three Studies from Couperin is a blend of old and new to impressive effect.

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES CHOPIN: Concerto No. 1 in E minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 11 Scored for solo piano, flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons in pairs, four horns, two trumpets, one trombone, timpani, and strings. Duration is 40 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was December 9-11, 2009 with Lang Lang as the piano soloist and Grant Llewelyn conducting. Only twice did Frederic Chopin (1810–1849) produce large-scale compositions, both concertos for piano and orchestra. In 1829, not yet 20 years old, the young pianist wrote a concerto in f minor, which he premiered in his native Poland March 17, 1830. It was so successful that he immediately began work on a second concerto, this time using the key of e minor. This new composition gave its creator a bit of trouble. He remarked to friends that he sometimes found it difficult to stay in the right mood long enough to complete a lengthy movement. This, after all, was the man who felt most comfortable producing his beloved solo etudes and nocturnes, each only a few minutes long; four or five of them together would scarcely match the length of the concerto’s first movement. The work opens with a spacious orchestral introduction, one of the longest stretches of purely orchestral writing that Chopin would ever produce. When the soloist enters, it is with bold authority, both strong chords and fast flowing runs, demanding a great variety of skills from the player, who is then rarely out of the spotlight for the rest of the movement. The gentler second movement, half the length of the first, again begins with the orchestra, though this time more briefly, before the soloist comes in with delicately ornamented melodic material much in the mood of Chopin’s nocturnes. For the finale, all is perky and buoyant, more in the spirit of his waltzes, though the meter is not that of a proper waltz. One could not waltz to it, but one could surely dance and spin. At the concerto’s premiere in Warsaw October 11, 1830, the piece and its composer were both warmly greeted by an enthusiastic audience. It would be his final concert in Warsaw. Soon after, he would be on the road to Vienna, and then undertook concert performances in the major cities of Europe. Within the year, he would be in Paris, which would be his home base for the rest of his life. Although the E minor Concerto was the second concerto that Chopin composed, it was the first to be published. It appeared in print in 1833, three years after its creation, and three years before its companion came to print. Thus, despite its marginally later origin, the E minor Concerto is known as the Concerto No. 1.

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES RAVEL: Le Tombeau de Couperin Scored for two flutes and piccolo, two oboes and cor anglais, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, one trumpet, harp and strings. Duration is 17 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was April 16-17, 2010, with Douglas Boyd on the podium. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) completed Le Tombeau de Couperin in 1917; he had begun work upon it prior to his enlistment in World War I as a military truck driver. This so-called “tomb of Couperin” is in no way funereal. Rather, it is a fond and lively tribute to the courtly days of the seventeenth century, specifically to the great French composer of that era, François Couperin. Each of its movements was intended to evoke the spirit of that time through the use of Baroque dance rhythms and musical forms. Among other inspirations, Ravel drew upon the Menuet, a graceful and elegant ballroom dance in triple meter, as well as the flowing Rigaudon, a dance originating in Provence. Italy, too, was given recognition, through its native Forlane, which became popular in France around 1700, and in Ravel’s hands is given a stately and elegant turn. Le Tombeau was at first a piano suite in six movements, each of which was dedicated to one of the composer’s friends lost in the war. Later, Ravel himself selected four of those movements — Prelude, Forlane, Rigaudon and Menuet — and re-scored them for chamber orchestra. Despite the slender forces, he made the most of instrumental timbres, contrasting the voices of strings to those of woodwinds and brass. In this version, the piece premiered in 1920. Later that year, Le Tombeau was choreographed for use as a ballet, completing the circle for this dance-inspired composition.

Duration is 12 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was April 17-18, 2009, with Scott O’Neil conducting the orchestra. Ravel composed La Valse in 1919 as a kind of homage to Vienna’s past, a glory that seemed far distant in these post-war years. The composer himself provided a preface to the score that describes the scene as an Imperial court ball around 1855, with the waltzing couples swirling beneath glimmering chandeliers and glimpsed through the mist. The specified time frame is just when Johann Strauss Jr. was dominating the waltz scene in Vienna, though Ravel opts for less structure than Strauss would have used. He also included a highly varied orchestra, with the usual suspects supplemented by piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, and myriad percussion, including the un-Viennese tambourine, castanets, tam-tam, and crotales. One might suppose that a composition inspired by waltzing would be ideally suited to the ballet, and indeed, the work originated on a commission from Sergei Diaghilev, impresario of the Ballets Russes, who seven years earlier had commissioned Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé. Ravel labored over the score for six months. At last, he presented the work to Diaghilev, who, to the composer’s dismay, declared it to be undanceable. The ensuing argument caused a permanent rift in their friendship, and Ravel never again composed for the Russian company. As for La Valse, a “poème choréographique” as the composer called it, Ravel reworked it as a piano duet in 1920, and premiered it in that form with a colleague (Alfredo Casella); that same year, he also had the work staged as an orchestral showpiece, as it is usually heard today. Eight years later, nearly a decade after Diaghilev’s rejection, La Valse finally came to the stage when Ida Rubenstein presented it as a ballet at the Paris Opera.
