O
n behalf of my fellow musicians, the staff and the board of trustees of the Colorado Symphony, I would like to welcome you to Boettcher Concert Hall. I have been Principal Percussionist since 1985 and have enjoyed participating in the musical growth of this fabulous orchestra. I have been privileged to serve on many different committees including the Artistic, Negotiating, Finance and Orchestra Committees. It is great to see the collaborative model working so well for the Colorado Symphony. We are very excited to have Andrew Litton as our new Music Director and look forward to many years of wonderful music-making with him. One of the enjoyable aspects of my job is the widely diverse programming that we offer. We could be playing a Mahler symphony one day and collaborating with DeVotchka the next. Our season offers something for everyone, from classical to rock and roll, and everything in between. Our musicians are extremely versatile and easily switch hats as needed. Part of my job is to represent the Colorado Symphony in a small group that performs chamber music in schools for children throughout the Denver metropolitan area. It’s great to see the joy and surprise in the kids’ faces as they hear the instruments up close. For some of these children, this is their first exposure to symphonic music. Our goal is to develop life-long listeners with a love for live performances. We rehearse during the day in an empty hall and are always thrilled to play for live audiences. Thank you for being here. If you listen closely, you will hear A-R-R-O-W spelled in musical notes, while the rhythm spells “arrow” in Morse code. The composition debuted in 2013 and we now use it as our musical logo in advertisements and on our website. Maestro O’Neil is working to expand the original overture into a full orchestral composition. Together, we have created a new partnership committed to innovation. The Future in Mind Why is education so important to the Colorado Symphony? The answer is a no brainer. The musicians of the Colorado Symphony are a brainy bunch. Every single member of the orchestra has spent countless hours studying and practicing, learning scores and perfecting a range of skills that culminate in flawless performances. According to recent research, musicians are brainy because they play music – an idea with exciting implications for the future of education and the performing arts. Over the past decade, a mountain of data has illustrated the sometimes surprising ways in which music shapes us, starting with our brains. Moving along a continuum that gets stronger with time, music can positively affect everything from IQ to mood. For example: •C hildren with three or more years of training on a musical instrument demonstrate advanced motor skills, verbal and nonverbal reasoning, and auditory discrimination, according to a 2008 study by researchers at Harvard University and Boston College. • S cores on the SAT rise incrementally for each year of high school music instruction, according to the College Board. •M usicians who practice daily scored significantly higher on tests of mental function than people with little or no musical training, according to a study by St. Andrew’s in Scotland, suggesting that even moderate amounts of musical activity have a positive impact on brain function. Of course, music’s benefit extends beyond the brain. Young people who participate in music activities in and outside of the classroom do better in school, are more likely to

graduate on time and attend college. Whether or not a child follows a path leading to an orchestra chair or another career in music, early exposure to music can increase their chances for success and enjoyment at every stage of life. Knowing all of this, can you imagine what would happen if quality music education were available to every single boy and girl in Denver and across Colorado? How might our future work force, our culture, our city look, sound and function if every citizen had access to the transformative power of music? As a resource and partner to the community, the Colorado Symphony is actively engaged with these and other questions. Education has been central to the orchestra’s mission for more than seventy years, as field trips to Boettcher Concert Hall have been a tradition for generations. Music education is key to living our mission, enriching our community – and securing our future. How do we serve the youth, and the future, by providing access to high-quality music education that supports whole-child development? How do we support the schools, teachers and school districts by providing tools and experiences that build on
the school-day experience? And how do we ensure the future of the Colorado Symphony by engaging new audiences in ways that are exciting, relevant and fun? One way is to continue to build on the success of our highly popular Colorado Symphony Kids program, which is informed by music teachers as well district arts coordinators from across metro Denver. This season, we welcomed more than 30,000 elementary, middle and high school students to Boettcher Concert Hall, with concerts that span everything from the music of Latin America and French Impressionism to math and the natural cycles of life. As funding for field trips and arts-based experiences has declined in recent years, our commitment to students of all backgrounds has increased. Colorado Symphony youth concerts are provided at no cost to schools with a high percentage of Title I students, one of the leading indicators of childhood poverty. More than 60% of students who attend Colorado Symphony Kids youth concerts receive scholarships; transportation assistance is also available to qualifying schools. The response from teachers is overwhelmingly positive. continued on page 18

Conrad Kehn of the Playground Ensemble leads the Very Young Composers program at Englewood Elementary School. The program launches at Cole Arts and Sciences Academy in February, in partnership with the Colorado Symphony. “Please continue to give kids in the metro area this opportunity,” wrote Betsy McGurk, music teacher at Virginia Court Elementary School in Aurora, after receiving a scholarship for a group of fifth-grade students. “I can understand the financial commitment this effort must take but please know that our students
Petit Musique and Once Upon a Time The Petit Musique program introduces the joy of a 16-person chamber ensemble to children and their parents and teachers, in local programs presented close to home. This spring’s program, “The Three Bears,” runs April 22-May 20 at venues across metro Denver. Presented throughout the year, the Once Upon a Time series brings Colorado Symphony musicians into schools to share musical versions of classic and contemporary folk tales for children from preschool to second grade. benefit in so many ways far beyond the obvious ones. I have been bringing students to hear you for nearly ten years and I have students in high school and beyond who come to me and tell me, ‘I remember when you took us to hear the symphony. That was awesome!!!’” Exciting things are ahead, as the Colorado Symphony launches two initiatives designed to broaden and deepen our impact on Colorado youth. First piloted in December in partnership with Denver TV8, the Distance Learning Project will eventually provide broadcasts of youth concerts to teachers and classrooms, creating a virtual experience of a live youth concert; eventually, we envision making these broadcast available to schools in rural and remote communities. And in February at Cole Arts and Science Academy in Five Points, we will launch the Very Young Composers, which teaches students as young as eight to create original pieces of music, using expressive tools available to all children. These compositions are then performed for students, teachers and family by professional orchestra musicians. Originally developed by bassist Jon Deak, former CSO

Composer in Residence and children’s advocate at the New York Philharmonic, the Very Young Composers is currently active at schools in Manhattan and around the world. In Denver, the Colorado Symphony will join with the Playground Ensemble, composed of faculty from Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, to bring the program to more students and schools. We have lots of ideas about why these programs are important: supporting the whole-child development of the youth, educators and families of our community is not only good for our community, it’s good for the future of symphonic music. Who knows what will happen when we make these types of programs available to more and more children? When we all do our part to support the development of our children, starting with their young minds – and their brains? We can’t wait to find out.

Currently Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Peter Oundjian is also in his second season as Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, after a successful first season. As well as concerts in and around Scotland, his inaugural season included a tour to China and culminated in his debut at the BBC Proms, and a concert at the Edinburgh International Festival. A regular guest conductor, recent and future engagements include concerts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic, as well as the Orchestre de Paris, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Last season, Oundjian and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, with whom he has a regular relationship, premiered a new piece by Krystof Maratka in Paris, which they then took to the Prague Spring Festival. Together they opened the festival with a televised performance of Smetana Má vlast. Previous and upcoming US highlights include concerts with the Detroit, Cincinnati, Philadelphia Houston and Saint Louis symphony orchestras. He has travelled to Australia to conduct the Sydney Symphony and he made his Japanese conducting debut with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 2013. Regular soloist collaborations include Yefim Bronfman, James Ehnes, Leila Josefowicz, Emmanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang and Renée Fleming.

Since her first public performance at age eight in her native Seoul, violinist Chee-Yun has enraptured audiences on five continents with her flawless technique, dazzling tone and compelling artistry. Since winning the Young Concert Artists competition in 1989, she has performed regularly with the world’s foremost orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the Toronto, Houston, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and National symphony orchestras, and with such distinguished conductors as Hans Graf, James DePriest, Jesus LopezCobos, Michael Tilson Thomas, Jaap van Zweden, Krzysztof Penderecki, Neeme Järvi, Pinchas Zukerman and Manfred Honeck. Her orchestral highlights include a concert with the Seoul Philharmonic conducted by Myung-Whun Chung that was broadcast on national network television, a benefit for UNESCO with the Orchestra of St. Lukes at Avery Fisher Hall, and her tours of the United States with the San Francisco Symphony (Michael Tilson Thomas conducting), and Japan with the NHK Symphony. Recent orchestral engagements include her return to the Dallas Symphony, and performances with the Mobile Symphony, the Pasadena Symphony, and the Orquesta Sinfonia Nacional. Upcoming highlights will feature Chee-Yun performing with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Pensacola Symphony, and the Colorado Symphony. A gifted recitalist, Chee-Yun has performed in all the major US cities, including appearances at the Kennedy Center’s “Salute to Slava” gala honoring Mstislav Rostropovich, the Mostly Mozart Festival’s tour to Japan, a performance with Michael Tilson Thomas in the inaugural season of Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, and the US premiere of the Penderecki Sonata No. 2 with pianist Barry Douglas. Firmly committed to chamber music, CheeYun’s seven discs on the Denon label and one on the Naxos label have received exceptional acclaim, and she has been heard frequently on NPR’s Performance Today and on WQXR and WNYC radio in New York City. In addition to her active performance and recording schedule, Chee-Yun is an Artist-in-Residence and Professor of Violin at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Charming, charismatic and deeply passionate about her art, she continues to carve a unique place for herself in the ever-evolving world of classical music. MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES BRITTEN: Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34 The piece is scored for two flutes and piccolo, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons in pairs, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, and strings. Duration is 17 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was April 20 & 21, 2007 with Nicholas Carthy on the podium. Its formal title is Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, which is exactly how the work is constructed. More familiarly, it’s known as Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Written in 1946 by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), the work was intended the British Ministry of Education, which had requested something for inclusion in the educational film Instruments of the Orchestra. The intent was to have a work that would serve to introduce new listeners to the varying voices within the orchestra: that an oboe sounds like this, whereas a clarinet sounds like this, and so on. Such a mission could have been accomplished with a very simple work, but such was not Britten’s plan. Instead, he chose a stately dance theme from stage music that English composer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) created for Aphra Behn’s play Abdelazer, or The Moor’s Revenge, and began his own work by having different sections of the orchestra state the theme in turn, making very clear to listeners exactly how the foundation material sounded. Next, he offered variant forms of that dance theme for each featured instrument, working from high to low in pitch within each family, not neglecting to spotlight the percussion. Lastly, he combined all the sections of the orchestra in an intricate fugue on a new theme derived from the original. Thus, the piece not only allows listeners to hear the contrasting voices of the instruments but also offers a peek into musical techniques of earlier centuries, showing how a melody can bounce from one instrument to another in sequence while other melodic ideas occupy the background. The familiar title may refer to “young persons.” However, it is a work that can be enjoyed by all, even those who are musically knowledgeable, as there is delight in following the melodies in their motion.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Concerto in D major for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 35 The piece is scored for solo violin, flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons in pairs, four horns, two trumpets, timpani, and strings. The duration of the concerto is 33 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on March 4 & 5, 2011, with Vadim Gluzman as the violin soloist and Hannu Lintu conducting. When Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed his only violin concerto, he was in Switzerland, vacationing far from his Russian homeland. There, he received a visitor from home, the violinist Yosif Kotek, a former student of Tchaikovsky’s at the Moscow Conservatory. The composer was intensely fond of the young man, and immediately set aside other works that had been on his desk to begin a violin concerto in honor of Kotek and of the composer’s feelings for the young man. He worked with unaccustomed celerity, completing the entire piece in less than a month. Then trouble arose, for a new work requires a premiere, and Kotek was too little known to do the honors himself. Thus, Tchaikovsky chose to dedicate the work to the renowned soloist Leopold Auer, only to find, to his horror, that Auer refused to perform it, rejecting it as “unviolinistic.” A premiere scheduled for March 1879 had to be cancelled for lack of a soloist. Other violinists also turned Tchaikovsky down before he finally persuaded Adolph Brodsky to premiere the work in Vienna on December 4, 1881. By most accounts, Brodsky performed well, but the composition itself was less fortunate, attracting the disdain of Eduard Hanslick, the most influential of Viennese critics, whose infamous review reads, in part, as follows: “The violin is no longer played; it is beaten black and blue.… Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto gives us for the first time the hideous notion that there can be music that stinks to the ear.” SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG PROGRAM 3
MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES In Hanslick’s defense, he would later have far kinder things to say about Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, but that concession would be after the composer’s death. For now, a deeply wounded Tchaikovsky had to face the failure of a major composition. Refusing to blame Brodsky for the debacle, he thanked his colleague for championing the piece, changed the Concerto’s dedication from Auer to Brodsky, and chalked it all up to experience. He went on to score great triumphs in the realm of symphony, opera and ballet. Before long, even the Viennese had come to admire Tchaikovsky’s abilities, and some of his former enemies repented their earlier attacks. Even Leopold Auer came to praise Tchaikovsky, confessing in the final year of the composer’s life that he had misjudged the Concerto and belatedly adding it to his repertoire. A late victory is better than no victory at all.

DVOŘÁK: Symphony no. 7 in D minor, Op. 70 The piece is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings. Duration is approximately 38 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was January 10-12, 2003, with Marin Alsop conducting the orchestra. The Symphony No. 7 of Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) dates from early in his years of international success. He had come to London in 1884 to conduct concerts at St. James Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, where the reception was overwhelmingly positive. English concert-goers were so eager for his music that two choral festivals requested works they might perform, and a London publisher offered Dvořák a large sum of money if it would be allowed to print any composition he might submit. Furthermore, the Philharmonic Society named him an honorary member, and begged him for a new symphony. Although astounded by the attention, Dvořák was not so stunned as to miss such opportunities. He promptly began a symphony for the Philharmonic Society. The work spent months on the drawing board. Dvořák was not only aware that English audiences were looking for something special; he also wanted to impress his colleagues, most especially Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), who had helped the young Czech to get his start. In one letter, Dvořák observed, “I don’t want to let Brahms down!” Admittedly, Dvořák had written half a dozen symphonies before this one, but few had reached the public yet, so for many listeners, this would be the first large-scale work of his that they had heard. The composer himself conducted the premiere in London April 22, 1885, to ecstatic crowds, and when Brahms later heard the piece, he, too, expressed his approval. Widely considered to be one of Dvořák’s most assertive symphonies, the Seventh yet manages to escape from the gloominess that sometimes comes with its D-minor key. Indeed, the key has dark potential, but Dvořák does not stay with it for long, offering instead many contrasting moods to brighten the day. Although the composer himself was a string player, he gives ample opportunity for expression to the woodwinds and brass. By the third movement, he is indulging in spirited rhythms reminiscent in those found in his Slavonic Dances; the symphony was composed for London, but that did not prevent him from remembering his Bohemian homeland. For his finale, Dvořák sets aside the greater optimism of the middle movements for stronger dramatic statements. Optimism still appears, though in shorter interludes, with focus more often on propulsive energy and a recurring two-note pattern that may bring to mind Brahms’ own Symphony No. 1.
