WELCOME... … to the New Year and to a very exciting period for the Inside the Score concerts. Within the series we are endeavoring to establish certain sub-series, including Shuffle, which — like an iPod set to ‘shuffle’ — mixes the widest variety of music possible, this year featuring Denver’s own C.F. Kip Winger. Best-known as the front-man for the ‘80s rock band, Winger, he has since composed music in diverse styles, including one that harkens to post-Impressionistic French music. Mix in some Paul McCartney and Björk, as well as some Messiaen, Saint-Saëns and John Adams, and you’ve got, well, Shuffle! On a more traditional note, we’re also cultivating a biographical series, begun with The Best of Beethoven and Letters from Mozart and continuing this February with The Life of Brahms. We will tell the life story of Johannes Brahms, in his own words and with his own music, including everything from symphonies to songs and chamber works. In between are concerts that promise to be as diverse as they are electrifying, from the Barbra Streisand Songbook, to Jean-Yves Thibaudet’s one-of-a-kind interpretation of Saint-Saëns’ “Egyptian” Piano Concerto, to the authentic New Orleans Jazz from the Preservation Hall Jazz band, to a classical bassoon concerto by the greatest film composer of our era, John Williams. The offerings this season are numerous, and strong, to the finish. Looking into the near future, don’t miss the opportunity to welcome Andrew Litton in his first Masterworks program since being announced as our Artistic Advisor, featuring the Colorado Symphony Chorus in Verdi’s colossal Requiem! See you there! Scott O’Neil Resident Conductor, Colorado Symphony

Expanding Our Reach, Building Our Future Sylvester Eaves didn’t know that his son, Marquise, was interested in playing music until he accompanied the eleven-year old and a group of his friends to Boettcher Concert Hall last September. “The next day my son asked me if he could take piano lessons,” says Sylvester. “I was blown away. We scraped our money together and went out and found a teacher; she told my wife that he is doing exceptionally well and seems to be a natural. By going to the Symphony, my son was able to identify his talent.” Marquise and forty of his classmates from Hillcrest Academy in Denver’s north Park Hill neighborhood are among more than 10,000 young people who have participated in Colorado Symphony Kids, the orchestra’s newly expanded education initiative, this school year. For many young people, a trip to the Colorado Symphony is a first opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of downtown Denver’s performing arts district. For others, like Marquise, it’s a chance to experience the transformative power of live music for the first time. “You never know what dreams may dream,” his father writes. “We might have the next Beethoven on our hands.” Engaging young people through education is just one of the ways the Colorado Symphony is shaping its future. “Activating potential audience members from diverse cultural, geographic and socio-economic pockets across the state is essential to the Colorado Symphony’s success as a modern and responsive arts institution,” says Gene Sobczak, President and CEO. Who knows from where the collaborators, partners, donors, volunteers, advocates and even musicians of tomorrow will come? “Reaching out to underrepresented communities is one way we advance our mission,” says Sobczak. “At the same time, we’re expanding the type of programming we offer — using technology, new artists, and new series — to grow our base in new ways, with an ever-evolving definition of what we do.” The Colorado Symphony is in the midst of one of the most dynamic, daring seasons in its history, with a depth of programming that spans classical music from the Baroque period to the present day. Perennial favorites – including Masterworks, Pops, Family and Holiday concerts — are joined by new offerings, including the Sacred Series, which brings early religious music to Denver’s historic Montview Presbyterian Church. The familiar names of Haydn, Handel, Beethoven and Brahms have appeared in this season’s Soundings; so have those of DeVotchKa, the Airborne Toxic Event, Pink Martini and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. 10 SOUNDINGS 2012/13 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG
The Colorado Symphony’s current season demonstrates its commitment to making world-class music accessible, engaging and relevant to the public — especially those audiences not traditionally seen at Boettcher Concert Hall. Some highlights: CULTURAL CONNECTIONS One of the longest-running celebrations of its kind in the country, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert & Humanitarian Awards enters its 23rd year this month. Produced in partnership with the MLK Colorado Holiday Commission, this annual ceremony is a reverent and joyful reflection on the life and legacy of Dr. King, as well as a chance to honor humanitarian leaders and peacemakers who live and lead in his example. “It’s an honor for us to join with the community in honoring Dr. King,” says Anthony Pierce, the Colorado Symphony’s Vice President of Artistic Administration. “He is a person we very much need to remember and to continue to learn from; his message is just as relevant today as ever.” Coming up January 15, this year’s awards will see the return of Denver’s Spirituals Project Choir and host Tamara Banks. Joseph Young, a rising young AfricanAmerican conductor, will lead the Colorado Symphony through a program of classical and traditional folk music, with a few modern touches supplied by Denver-based violinist Jeff “Maestro” Hughes. As always, the program is free and open to all, though tickets are required. Illuminating the influence and breadth of Latin music, the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration at Boettcher has been a highlight of every season since 2002. Last year, in partnership with NEWSED Community Development Corporation, the Symphony ramped up the festivities with a free community concert in Civic Center Park, which married classical music with mariachi and other sounds from Mexico and points further south. In September, the Symphony, the Mexican Consulate and the Mexican Cultural Center hosted Denver’s first concert commemorating “El Grito de la Independencia,” Mexico’s annual celebration of independence from the Spanish, achieved in 1810. This spring, the Colorado Symphony plans to expand its outreach to Denver’s Latino community with a Spanish-language version of Peter and the Wolf¸ Sergei Prokofiev’s classic symphony for children, and Carnival of Animals, by Camille Saint-Saëns. Scheduled for March 17, this new entry in the Family series will be the Symphony’s first-ever Spanish-language production. Music is for everyone, no matter their background. So believed songwriter Woody Guthrie, who heralded the everyman in hundreds of songs, many of which are now

classics of the American folk cannon. In September, the Symphony honored Woody’s 100th birthday, as well as his inclusive worldview, with A Tribute to Woody Guthrie, conducted by multi-instrumentalist and composer David Amram. A true Renaissance Man, Amram took Woody’s music to the people with a series of educational and outreach events, including film screenings, school visits and a free performance on the 16th Street Mall. More than 400 community members — among them, low-income children and adults, social service workers, teachers and youth mentors and adults with physical and mental disabilities — attended a free dress rehearsal at Boettcher Concert Hall, which culminated with a touching sing-a-long of Guthrie’s iconic “This Land is Your Land.” A recording of this tribute, which also included performances from folklorist Josh White, Jr., singers Jim and Salli Ratts, and members of the East High School Choir, will be available later this year. GROWING YOUNG MINDS WITH MUSIC Music has a unique power to inspire and delight young people — and can have a transformative and positive impact on their academics, behavior, relationships and career readiness. Through the Colorado Symphony Kids program, launched last year, the Symphony enhances the education and well-being of students from the sevencountry metro area by offering a continuum of engagement that is unique among arts providers in Colorado. First, Colorado Symphony Kids invites elementary, middle and high school schools to attend a year-round selection of youth concerts, which are targeted to specific grade levels and align to Colorado academic standards in a number of subject areas, including music, math and social studies. Having doubled the number of youth concerts in the 2012/13 season, the symphony is on track to reach 40,000 students this season. SOUNDINGS 2012/13 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG 11
EXPANDING OUR REACH With the new On Location program, the Symphony is putting down roots in growing cultural pockets across metro Denver. This year-round series of concerts at Parker’s PACE Center, the Lone Tree Arts Center and Sedalia’s Cherokee Ranch showcases original, often intimate, configurations of the orchestra and utilizes the uniqueness of each venue. Last November, the Colorado Symphony took its biggest geographic step yet with the launch of Symphonic Salida! (see Sidebar), which will serve as a model for the development of music series across the state. “Being present in different venues and geographic areas allows us to expand our repertoire in interesting ways,” says Sobczak. “In addition to becoming a greater part of these communities, we’re also bringing attention to the orchestra, and working to engage these audiences at Boettcher, as well.”

The Colorado Symphony Kids experience doesn’t end after a trip to Boettcher Concert Hall. During in-school visits from members of the orchestra, students interact directly with players and their instruments and experience the benefits of music education in a familiar environment. Finally, all Colorado Symphony Kids are given a voucher to return for any Masterworks concert of the season; this year’s selection include some of the most beloved classical music of all time, including Ravel’s Boléro, Verdi’s Requiem and The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, conducted by Gilbert Varga. Sometimes, young people are invited to attend open dress rehearsals — as they were last February, when more than 700 middle and high school students had a chance to watch DeVotchKa and the Colorado Symphony run through a full program in preparation for a public performance. The objective is to build a progressive educational experience that resonates with the child,” says Sobczak. “Beyond exposure alone, we’re meeting the students where they are, and engaging their parents to participate. Our goal is to have a recurring presence in these students’ lives.”
SYMPHONIC SALIDA! Nestled among the peaks and vistas of the Upper Arkansas River Valley, Salida has long been known as an artist’s enclave. Designated as one of two Cultural Districts by the State of Colorado in 2012, Salida claims scores of artists, musicians and crafters among its population of 5,000. Thanks to a new collaboration with the Colorado Symphony, Salida will increasingly be known as a destination for music lovers, too. This fall, the Symphony partnered with cultural and civic leaders in Chaffee County to present Symphonic Salida!, a concert series featuring the musicianship and vision that make the Colorado Symphony one of the state’s most beloved cultural treasures. Symphonic Salida! is part of a multi-year initiative to bring world-class symphonic music to communities across Colorado. Throughout the 2012/13 season, the Symphony will present three concerts that feature small ensembles, including strings, percussion and woodwinds. On June 30, 2013, the series culminates with a full-orchestra performance at Riverside Park. So far, Salida has given the Colorado Symphony a very warm welcome. This fall, the string orchestra performed before a sold-out audience at Salida’s SteamPlant Event Center, a cultural anchor on the town’s historic main street. Salida’s youth got in on the experience, too, when the musicians gathered their cellos, violins and violas for a visit to Salida Middle School, where they shared music and personal stories with more than 400 elementary, middle and high school students. “I’m such a believer in exposing kids that live way out of the middle of nowhere to possibilities they may not know anything about,” says music teacher Robin French. “We don’t have a string program in our schools, so it’s very likely that most of these kids have never seen a viola or a cello. But they were rapt, quiet. The musicians were so gracious and fun. It was something totally new for our students.” A true collaboration, Symphonic Salida! is supported by a number of partners, including the City of Salida, Salida Public Schools and KHEN 106.9 FM radio. According to KHEN’s Scott Adams, who directed the effort on the ground in Salida, partnership was key to the series’ successful launch. “Without the initial enthusiasm and encouragement by Gene Sobczak and by Harry Brull, KHEN Board Chair, others close to the project might not have understood and shared the vision of making Salida a destination for hearing top level classical music,” says Adams. Once this series gets firmly established, it’s not inconceivable that people will drive 75 miles, in any direction, to come to these concerts.”
