or the eighty full-time musicians of the Colorado Symphony, every program is different. All season long, an exciting variety of conductors and guest artists bring their distinctive stamp to timeless works by the greatest composers of all time, both classic and contemporary. We don’t always know what to expect when we show up for that first read-through. Truly, one of the exciting things about our jobs is constantly discovering new and creative interpretations of even the most traditional music. When it’s time to perform with the Colorado Symphony Chorus, as we will 25 times this season alone, we know to expect some constants: excellence, power, and passion. Led by world-renowned choral director Duain Wolfe, the choir is composed of 200 volunteers who exemplify the beauty of choral music in every performance. Our singers are bound by a shared dedication to the music. Every week, they travel from across the Front Range to rehearsals and performances in Denver and beyond, totaling about eighty a year. Since its founding in 1984, the Colorado Symphony Chorus has performed at concerts and festivals across Colorado, including the Aspen Music Festival, where it’s been featured every summer for the past two decades. In 2009, Wolfe and the Chorus celebrated 25 years with a two-week concert tour of Europe, showing audiences around the world what Colorado has to offer the world of classical music. This season, the Colorado Symphony honors the Chorus with a series of concerts that celebrate its immeasurable contribution to the orchestra. We look forward to again sharing the stage with these talented singers, who amplify the experience for the musicians on stage as well as the audience in the hall. Thank you, Mr. Wolfe and the Colorado Symphony Chorus, for thirty incredible years! Here’s to thirty more.

Heroes, villains, superheroes, and superstars are bringing new audiences — and new outfits — to Boettcher Concert Hall. Pop Culture Classroom, which produces one of the largest Comic Con conventions in the United States. This spring, more than 75,000 people attended the three-day event in downtown Denver. This season, the Colorado Symphony launched a series of four concerts designed with this fun and music-loving crowd in mind. According to Anthony Pierce, Senior Vice President of Program Innovation, the series is an opportunity to lure new audience members and show off a more playful side of the orchestra. “The Geek series is a lot of fun for everyone, because the music of these films and TV shows and cartoons was written to be performed by orchestras. It really shows off what the ensemble can do. It’s very exciting, dramatic, and most people connect to it on a deep level,” says Pierce. “The response at these concerts is overwhelming, because the crowd is so enthusiastic. They dress up. They get into it. The musicians definitely feed off of that energy.” The Geek concerts build on the success of last year’s popular Symphonic Tribute to Comic Con and Star Wars concerts, which brought enthusiastic, intergenerational – and intergalactic – crowds to Boettcher Concert Hall. So far, the series has indeed brought new people into the concert experience: Of those who attended the Animaniacs Live! JIM MIMNA

Quick: What images comes to your mind when you think of a Colorado Symphony concert? If the answer involves capes, superheroes, master villains and a mysterious power known as the Force, you might be among a population whose members proudly identify as “Geeks.” And if you aren’t a Geek, you may be seated next to one: Geek life is huge in Denver, and Geeks represent a growing segment of the Colorado Symphony audience. “Music is really everywhere in Geek culture. It’s more interwoven than people realize,” says Matt Krupa, the Colorado Symphony’s Application Support Analyst and resident Nerd Consultant. “Many movies, television shows, and video games all have symphonic music at their core. Try to imagine Darth Vader with no ‘Imperial March,’ or any Star Trek series without music. It simply wouldn’t be the same.” Krupa is also a quizmaster with Geeks Who Drink pub trivia and an avowed Star Wars fanatic (as evidenced by the action figures that line his computer). This season, he’s been busy in the role of Nerd Consultant, a title that began as a joke. Krupa has driven partnerships between the CSO and a number of Geek-centric organizations in town, including Girls of Geek 12, the 501st Legion Mountain Garrison and Denver Comic Con/

nearly doubled in the past year, with patrongenerated content popping up the Colorado Symphony’s Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram feeds. This spike is another illustration of the intrinsic relationship between “Geeks” and music — an association that for many goes back a long way. “I imagine if you surveyed musicians in orchestras across the country, you’d find that many of them were either labeled or self-identified with the term ‘band Geek,’ at some point, and that sense of camaraderie remains strong even for former ‘band Geeks’ who no longer practice, but have a knowing ‘insider’ appreciation for a live symphonic performance,” says Kendra Wiig, another proud Geek who manages the Colorado Symphony’s social media content. “Many of these students now embrace the term with pride: ‘Band Geek’ is an identity of mastery, passion, and camaraderie with fellow musicians.” The Geek series continues with A Symphonic Tribute to Comic Con v2.0 on November 15, followed by Danny Elfman’s Music from The Films of Tim Burton on February 6 and 7, and Star Wars in May 2015. Geek concert in September, more than half were first-time patrons of the Colorado Symphony. “Our mission is to share the experience of symphonic music with everyone – not just traditional audiences,” says Pierce. “Through programming and outreach to partners and different cultural pockets of our community, we’re finding audiences and really catering to them. It’s really an exciting opportunity for the organization.” It’s also an opportunity for, say, resident conductor Scott O’Neil to dress as Yoda. Or for Stormtroopers to dance in the aisles. Every program in the Geek series includes a little something extra, from photo-ops with Spider-Man to a mini-Comic Con midway vibe in the lobby. “These concerts let us celebrate what we all love, and they make the music more accessible to someone who might be otherwise intimidated by a symphonic experience,” says Krupa. “We remind them that a symphony orchestra is behind some of their favorites.” Technology is embraced as part of the Geek concerts, as audience members are encouraged to take photographs and post to social media before and during the program. This is part of the reason the Colorado Symphony’s social media following has

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT MEET CATHERINE BEESON At every point in her journey to her current chair as the Colorado Symphony’s Assistant Principal Viola, Catherine Beeson has played two roles: musician, and educator. Before moving to Denver in 1999, Catherine served as a teaching artist with the New York Philharmonic and the Little Orchestra Society in New York City. In Denver, Catherine has brought the joy of music to both children and adults through Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra, Up Close and Musical, Friends of Chamber Music, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. In September, Catherine was appointed to the Colorado Symphony’s newly created position of Director of Community and Education Programs, a post she’ll hold while maintaining her place in the orchestra. That’s no easy task. Fortunately, Catherine is uniquely energetic, dedicated, and passionate about connecting people of all ages and backgrounds to the power of symphonic music.

Why are you so passionate about music education? I love getting to live in a world of history and expression as a performer. Every day I collaborate with other musicians is a day I am grateful to be immersed in this incredible continuum of human genius. For me, education is a way to express that gratitude far beyond my group of performer colleagues. It’s so powerful an experience for us, how can we not feel compelled to invite everyone into it? When you talk about music education, you don’t just mean for children. Tell us a bit about your approach to providing enrichment and engagement opportunities for people of all ages. Just like everyone is an artist whether they think they “can draw” or not, I believe everyone is a musician! The CSO

is committed to unleashing that super power with our Very Young Composers program. We also reach teen and college age students with special visits to open rehearsals and opportunities to work directly with CSO musicians who have performance experience from all over the world. We’re also very excited to be providing adult education programs like our Inside the Score series and a variety of interactive lecture series throughout the community. Can a person be too old, or too young, to learn about music? If I had one wish it would be to give any age person the basic tools to allow them to make music from nothing. Creation of music seems so daunting but it’s really nothing more than absent minded humming made mindful. When we learn to make something, we are internalizing

Third-grade students in the Colorado Symphony’s Very Young Composers at Cole Arts & Science Academy. the mechanics, making critical choices and observations, and beginning to understand that thing in a very personal way. Music is no different, especially “classical” music. Can a person ever be too old or too young to learn about anything? As a member of the orchestra and, now, the staff, you’re in a unique position. What’s exciting about living in both worlds? Is it challenging? It’s definitely challenging to balance both worlds, but that is part of what makes it exciting. The more important part, and this may sound cheesy, is that for me each of these worlds completes the other. Whether I’m coaching young instrumentalists, facilitating workshops, writing activity-based listening exercises, or designing outreach programs, it all has a direct impact on the way in which I approach performance preparation. I’m very lucky and deeply grateful to have been able to do the work of art for over 25 years. I’m even more excited to be able to roll it all into one job for my home team now!

What was your musical education like as a child? I grew up with very little music in the house but I was blessed with a father who belted out silly songs and a mom who thought it would be a good idea for me to have some music lessons. When I was nine she drove me to Houston from our small east Texas town every week, a 55-mile trek. In those days, before seatbelt laws, I practiced while laying down in the back of the station wagon! I really loved the violin instantly and would scratch away at it trying to figure out my latest assignments. Before long I was able to join a youth orchestra and that’s when I was really hooked! To learn more about the Colorado Symphony’s education programs, including the 2014/15 Youth Concerts now underway for students in grades 3-12, visit coloradosymphony.org/ education.

SOUNDINGS 2014/15 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG PROGRAM 1

HOLIDAY PROGRAM NOTES TOO HOT TO HANDEL George Frideric Handel was on a roll in the spring of 1742, when he premiered his great oratorio: Messiah. It was reported in the Dublin Journal by an anonymous critic that, “On Tuesday last Mr. Handel’s Sacred Grand Oratorio, the Messiah, was performed at the New Musical Hall in Fishamble Street. The Sublime, the Grand and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestik and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear.” Two hundred and sixty-one years later, Handel’s Messiah is one of the most performed and popular choral works appreciated by audiences all over the world. Instantly recognizable is the famous “Hallelujah Chorus,” during which it is customary to stand. It is exactly that sense of excitement that prompted conductor Marin Alsop to suggest giving Handel’s Messiah a new twist. Too Hot to Handel grew from an idea to fruition in the hands of Alsop’s colleagues: Gary Anderson and Bob Christianson, who recreated this gospel and jazz version adaptation of Messiah in 1992. The sensational new appeal of Too Hot to Handel — which premiered in 1993 with Marin Alsop and the Concordia Orchestra — has been met with the same enthusiasm as when the ink was fresh in 1742. Alsop, in collaboration with Christianson and Anderson, envisioned the Messiah in a way that captures a fresh “feel” and thrill, while retaining Handel’s original musical intent. “It’s a great story, but I also think that it requires some kind of audience participation. It becomes an active listening experience when you’re allowed to stand up and clap your hands…” says Alsop. The creative team of Alsop-Christianson-Anderson decided their adaptation would encompass jazz, gospel, rock and funk to “break the classical sound barrier.” The result is a swinging performance of the traditional oratorio. —Ella M.
