An Engaging Conversation As Artistic Advisor to the Colorado Symphony, Andrew Litton brings a lifetime of experience, insight and knowledge of classical music, from the greatest works by the canonical composers to the most brilliant soloists on the circuit. This September, he enters his second season as curator of Masterworks, an eclectic series with something for every taste. In this conversation with Anthony Pierce, Colorado Symphony Vice President of Artistic Administration, Litton discusses some highlights of the 2013/14 Masterworks season, which encompasses 16 concerts. Anthony Pierce: We begin the series with Shostakovich 10 on Opening Weekend, September 20-22. Shostakovich is someone you’re passionate about. You really wanted to curate that with the orchestra. Tell us about that. Andrew Litton: Shostakovich was the greatest symphonist of the 20th Century and this, arguably his greatest symphony, is a masterpiece, an incredibly powerful work. It was completed after the death of Stalin, who was a notorious enemy of the composer. Shostakovich lived in fear of his life under Stalin’s regime. The second movement is probably one of the greatest depictions of hatred I’ve ever heard; whether it’s actually about Stalin, we don’t know. We don’t know much about Shostakovich’s true intentions behind his music because he kept it very much to himself, even his friends weren’t really sure. His music is laced with inner meaning. His symphonies represent a sort of CNN Headline News summary of 20th Century Soviet life and are as good a depiction of what it was like living there in those times as we could possibly have, musically speaking. of our careers, we made a record together, it was my very first one. He’s a splendid player and a wonderful guy. He’s playing one of the great works for saxophone from 100 years ago, the Glazunov saxophone concerto. I’m starting with Borodin’s Overture to Prince Igor not only because it’s beautiful and popular and romantic and passionate, but because Glazunov actually orchestrated it, so there’s a connection. And then we’re continuing with John Williams’ fantastic soundtrack to the Spielberg movie Catch Me if You Can, which has a tremendous saxophone solo. So it’s a wonderful juxtaposition of two extremes for saxophone - sax at its jazziest and sax at its most classical.

AP: Andrew Litton in Concert, November 22-24, is part of our collaboration with the Denver Art Museum’s Passport to Paris exhibition. It’s all Ravel — the complete Daphnis and Chloé . AL: I love big, big pieces, because they give all of us a chance to really explore large forms. The challenge with big works is that there’s always an overall arch, so there’s actually a shape to it. It’s some of the most passionate and erotic music ever written about the two lovers

writing and incredibly pastoral in nature. Yet Ravel said, “This 34-bar melody nearly killed me.” So you have no idea of the birth pains involved sometimes in music that sounds like it just popped out.

AP: Tell me about Watkins Plays Elgar, March 14-16. AL: Paul Watkins is one of the most gifted cellists I’ve ever worked with. He’s a lovely chap who got a job playing principal cello with the BBC Symphony when he was almost pre-natal. So he's one of those prodigiously talented people who pepper our profession. He’s grown into really a wonderful artist so it will be a great pleasure to welcome him here to Colorado. We’re ending the program with Prokofiev’s Fourth Symphony. If our audience knows Romeo & Juliet by Prokofiev it’s very much in that vein. It’s extremely challenging — very virtuosic writing, lots of fun, last movement’s a big romp. This will be a Colorado Symphony premiere, and a fantastic piece to introduce to the audience. AP: Vadim Gluzman was last here with the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and now he’s playing Korngold, on the Litton Conducts Mahler program, May 2-4. AL: He’s one of the most gifted violin soloists on the circuit now. He’s astonishing technically, and he plays in a real Old World Russian sort of way. I got to know him when he was just a student in Dallas, so it’s been a fantastic journey for me to now be working with him as a full-fledged professional, having a massive career. We’ve recorded two discs together, including the Bruch Violin

Daphnis and Chloé. It deals with all sorts of mythology as the story would indicate. It’s a stunning piece full of colors and descriptive writing. This is music that was written to have a visual element but that doesn’t need the visual element to succeed. Another piece like that is Rite of Spring, which we’re ending the current season with. The day Stravinsky bought his sketchbook for Rite of Spring he was with Ravel, having lunch, and Ravel had just finished Daphnis and Chloé. That was in 1911. These composers who we now idolize and worship and respect from beyond because they’re no longer with us: They were just humans out having lunch and talking probably about silly things, too. It’s fun to think about. This Masterworks program actually represents three of Ravel’s greatest works. The Rapsodie espagnole is an incredibly colorful piece. Ravel was a Basque, from that nebulous border between Spain and France, so he was fascinated with Spain. [The piece is] full of the kind of impressionistic, exotic charms and sense and fragrances that you would expect to have from somebody writing in this period. The outer movement is pure jazz. At this point, Ravel was friends with George Gershwin. There’s definitely a symbiotic relationship there. George, in fact, asked Ravel if he could study with him, and Ravel said, “Why be a second-rate Ravel when you’re already a first-rate Gershwin?” The idea of incorporating jazz into his music was definitely influenced by George, when he saw how well it worked, and the slow movement [of the piano concerto] is one of the most beautiful movements ever written. When you listen, it seems so effortlessly blissful and still and sublime

Concerto No. 1 recording, which won the Diapason d’Or de l’Année, the top prize in France for recordings. So we’ve had our share of joint success, which is fun when you look at yourself as a kind of father figure towards somebody and then, “Look, what we can do together.” When the Korngold concerto was written by this film composer, you know, the feeling was — tsk tsk. The melodies are all from his films. What could be more tacky? One critic said, “Definitely more corn than gold.” Now that we’re over our prejudice, and now that we’re so eager for beauty in our lives, this piece is on almost every orchestra season every year. It’s become a hit with audiences that are desperate for this kind of romantic music. Korngold was a Jewish composer who was forced to emigrate during the second World War. I love pairing Korngold with Mahler because Mahler was a Jewish composer who was forced to change his religion in order to live and have a career. They make sympathetic bedfellows. Mahler 7 is a glorious, huge piece, and probably the least popular of the nine numbered Mahler symphonies, because it’s so challenging to play. Many critics have a hard time accepting the happy nature of the last movement. It’s C Major, the happy key, some of the happiest music ever written. I think people just can’t deal with it: How could he possibly write a piece like this? I think we’ve all known people in our lives who never smile, for one reason or another. But when they do it’s horrific because their faces, their physiognomy isn’t constructed in such a way that a smile is attractive. Maybe that’s the issue with this piece: People can’t deal with Mahler smiling. But it is typical Mahler. There’s the obsession with death. Remember that Mahler was one of thirteen children, over half of whom died in childbirth or childhood. There was

It’s fun to think about.” always a coffin in the living room. And he also was living as a child right next to a military barracks, so he heard tattoos day in and day out. That’s why his music is filled with marches, trumpet calls. He fell in love with nature and the sounds of nature in his mid-symphonies. There’s the presence of cowbells. As a boy growing up in New York City, falling in love with this music, I couldn’t quite grasp the importance of cowbells, because the noises I heard were all gun shots, subways, sirens and car horns. Mahler said it was the last earthly sound one heard as one climbed the mountains. About 25 years ago, during a tour with my British orchestra, we were in a tiny town in Switzerland. It was about five in the afternoon, with a big fog, you couldn’t really see the mountain. But you could hear these cows in the distance, these cowbells. It suddenly hit me. You couldn’t see them, but there was this sound. And I got it. American percussionists tend to have the same question: “What’s with the cowbells?” They’re always shaking them. I have to say, “Guys, guys. It’s not that kind of party. They don’t all move at the same time.”

AP: We close the season with Porgy and Bess, May 16-18. AL: I spent my youth living about 150 yards from where the Gershwins lived for most of the time George was writing in New York, Rhapsody in Blue, all that stuff. So I’m very closely connected to George the composer. And fell in love with Porgy and Bess at an early age, and then started getting involved with performing it. The problem was, aside from performing the whole opera, the only

way you could do exerpts was in a much more Broadway-centric arrangement by the great Robert Russell Bennett, who treated it more like a Broadway show. There are those of us, snobs like me, who very much feel that Porgy and Bess is not a Broadway show but an opera. I was getting ready for performances with the London Symphony in 1991 and my Porgy, a great guy named Sir Willard White, said to me, “Andrew, why don’t you make your own suite? Why don’t you do your own?” And I thought, ‘That’s such hard work. I’m not a composer, an arranger, I don’t want to be.” But I sat down, and I realized Gershwin made an orchestral suite that’s twenty minutes called “Catfish Row,” a great starting point. This was the composer himself who did these shameless cuts from here to here. If he could do that, I could do that. So I put together a suite that’s one-third of the opera, in chronological order. My goal was to make it affordable for a symphony orchestra to do in a concert. I needed a piece that just had four soloists, a great chorus part. It’s basically every hit tune from the opera, and not just the songs, but the music around the songs, so you get the whole scene, the whole sequence of events: the wild party, the drug pusher, the Bible-beating woman saying, “Go back home.” It’s so much more powerful than just the tunes themselves. The Gershwin estate said, “We like it, we’d like to make it the official suite, but you’re not getting any money for it.” I said, “That’s alright. Just make sure my name’s on the program. That’s something.” I

INSIDE THE SCORE Biographies SCOTT O’NEIL, resident conductor This is Scott O’Neil’s seventh season with the Colorado Symphony, and his third full season as resident conductor. O’Neil maintains a strong commitment to making music of the highest quality accessible to young audiences. He served as associate conductor for the Utah Symphony, which he joined in August 2000. O’Neil has guest conducted the Houston Symphony, Houston Youth Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Florida Philharmonic, Tulsa Philharmonic, Portland Symphony (Maine), the Lubbock Symphony, the Boise Philharmonic, the Salt Lake Symphony and the Columbus Symphony in Ohio. O’Neil studied piano performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory, served as the assistant conductor of the Eastman School Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Rice

University, where he was the director of the Campanile Orchestra, a community/university orchestra. In 1999 he served as director of orchestras at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. In the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by the League of American Orchestras (LAO) to conduct an orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and advanced students from the University of Southern California in Synergy, a program created to promote young, contemporary composers. Also in the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by LAO to appear on the Conductor Preview with the Jacksonville Symphony. O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances on each of the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday Series.

CHARLES DENLER, composer The music of American composer and pianist, Charles Denler, can be heard all over the world. Charles received critical acclaim by winning an EMMY in 2004 for his work on Bentley Creek and went on to receive his second EMMY in 2005 for his score to Beyond The

Medal Of Honor. In 2010 Charles was awarded the Jury Choice GOLD MEDAL for his score to the Richard Gere film, Teenage Witness, and a second GOLD MEDAL for the film, I AM, at the Park City Film Music Festival. In 2011 Charles received The Ribaut Award for Excellence in Music for Film at the Beaufort International Film Festival. In 1985 Charles lost his younger brother and band-mate to a tragic accident. Five years later he was diagnosed with a condition that nearly crippled both of his hands. Overcoming the odds, Charles went on to give over 2,000 concerts, and compose for nearly 200 film and television scores. Without any formal training, he began writing for symphonies, and his orchestral works have been played around the globe. His music has been featured with artists such as Creed, Cyndi Lauper and Jose Feliciano. Upon meeting Hardy Jones and Julia Whitty, National Geographic Television,

Charles was asked to write music for their production, Twenty Years with the Dolphins. It was then that Charles fell in love with the art of film scoring. Following with two more Geographic projects, he went on to write for numerous other documentaries, film and television programs, and promotional work that included the main theme for the new STARZ! Kids' Television Network, music for Animal Planet, The History Channel, Honda, Coca-Cola, Oprah, Dateline, PBS, NBC, NASA, HDNet and many feature film productions. Actors featured in Charles' films include Richard Dreyfuss, Richard Gere, Burt Reynolds, Susan Sarandon, Daryl Hannah, Steve Guttenberg, Louis Gossett Jr., Michael Madsen, Charles Durning and many others. GREENHORN MOUNTAIN $ 3,800.00 This is the southern view from Balcony House in LaVeta. It is the first light to hit the mountains at sunrise and is always a special gift in the morning. At first light it is not uncommon to see a dozen or so deer grazing on the meadow near the house. The unique snowcap, which just gives a hint of the snow, is visible most of the year, and offers a crown on this very special mountain.

SPANISH PEAKS $ 16,000.00 These two massive mountains have served as landmarks, to Native Americans as well as our nation's early explorers. From some areas on the plains these two mountains can be seen from as far off as a hundred miles. Our family has a small house and studio at the base of West Spanish Peak (the mountain pictured to the right.) The adjoining Cuchara Valley is a beautiful hidden gem in the beautiful state of Colorado, and we are blessed to have this home, on a ridge, that we call "Balcony House."

ODESSA LAKE $ 65,000.00 I can think of no other mountain lake that would rival Odessa Lakes' sublime beauty. My wife Lyla, our daughter Franchesca, and I have spent many nights in one of two campsites located a short walk from the lake. This enchanted glacial carved masterpiece is truly "Heaven on Earth," and the hike of the nine mile round trip is nothing compared to the experience of seeing this wonder of nature. I would be remiss not to share this vision of Gods' greatest creations in this, my humble painting.

ALBERTA FALLS $ 6,800.00 Many times in my life I have hiked past this waterfall and admired its majestic beauty. Little did I know that years later I would be painting this chasm etched by the icy waters flowing from the melting snow pack in the remarkable Glacier Gorge. Some of the soaring movements in Denler's symphony can actually take me to these hidden gems in our wondrous Rocky Mountains.

THE LITTLE MATTERHORN $ 7,500.00 I have always promised myself I would someday climb this majestic peak, but I'm afraid my prowess and advanced age will take my ascent off the table. Besides that, if I am climbing it, how could I be painting it? I will just have to use my imagination! I am very content to paint this masterpiece of the Colorado Rockies and leave the mountaineering to the best.

GOEMMER BUTTE Not for Sale This ancient volcanic plug dominates the Cuchara Valley and is the view due west from our summer home and studio in LaVeta, Colorado. Our house sits on a ridge above the Wahatoya Valley that graces this majestic monolith that almost comes alive with the changing Colorado weather. I can't help to think that this view moved Charles to interpret this scene to his musical inspirations.

PLAINS BELOW THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS $ 8,700.00 Surely the first explorers were astonished by the aweinspiring snow-capped peaks that ascended from the gentle grassland that approached these spectacular giants. Although this perspective of Longs Peak is north of the city, Charles Denler has a similar view from his home in Denver.

LONGS PEAK $ 4,800.00 This is one of two paintings I did from an outdoor sketch from a small bluff above Upper Beaver Meadows. A crystal clear stream graces the valley floor, and the nearby picnic area is a great way to rest, restore and simply wonder at all of God's beautiful creations that he has bestowed upon us.

IN THE ROCKIES $ 26,000.00 This is one of the many torrents that cascade from the high peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. These icy waters from the glacial melt move oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spirit to attempt to capture its energy. As the Colorado Symphony and choir implement Charles Denler's extraordinary music, I must also do the same with my paintbrush to hold on to these precious images provided by our Maker.

INSIDE THE SCORE Program Notes “Call To Freedom” from PORTRAITS OF AN AMERICAN SOLDIER, An American Symphony No. 2 We will be opening the concert with the overture from my 2nd Symphony. This first piece is a proclamation of the freedom we share as citizens of the United States of America.

PORTRAITS OF COLORADO, An American Symphony No. 1 The symphony is written in ten shorter movements to meet the needs of today's contemporary audience. Our "iPod generation" is accustomed to playlists filled with shorter pieces of music generally three to four minutes long. Lengthy symphonic movements often do not fit into modern playlists. Even though the symphony is divided into shorter movements, it is written in a traditional manner with theme and variation woven throughout the music. Freedom has been written into the symphony to allow for spontaneous moments at the piano. Let this symphony take you on a journey through one of our country’s greatest treasures, the Rocky Mountains! The Chorus: Throughout the symphony, the chorus sings in Latin, “A Sole Calefiere, Vivet I Alium Diem” translated, “To feel the warmth of the sun, I will live another day.” Movement No. 1 - Rocky Mountain Odyssey I have spent an incredible amount of time hiking in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. At any given moment, the weather can move from a gentle summer day to a massive thunderstorm yielding hail and freezing temperatures. To me, this unpredictability is one of the great inspirations I find in these rugged hills. This first movement speaks of the majesty and the power of the Rocky Mountains. Movement No. 2 - The Sangre de Cristos This movement was inspired by one of Jerry Malzahn’s paintings. In 1719 the Spanish explorer Antonio Valverde y Cosio named the Sangre de Cristo (“Blood of Christ”) mountains after seeing the red hue of the peaks at sunrise. Movement No. 3 - A Walk In The White Forest Beyond the valley behind our Colorado home is a place that my children call the white forest. The beautiful Colorado aspens are one of our state’s great treasures. Imagine walking through one of these wonderful forests from a child’s perspective. Throughout this movement and the symphony, I often use solo flute and responsive oboe to portray birds and wildlife. Movement No. 4 - Where Wild Horses Run There are few things that take your breath away more than seeing a wild mustang running free! The American wild horse has become a symbol of freedom in our country. This movement was written for my wife. One of her favorite adages is “In every living thing is the spirit to be free.” A piccolo trumpet carries us over the rythmic gait of wild mustangs. Movement No. 5 - The Dance For me, our mountains are not only a place of peace, but also of great joy. My heart leaps when I see the finger of God chisled into these dramatic peaks! Movement No. 6 - Ranch In The Highlands This movement pays homage to my hometown, Highlands Ranch. Listen carefully, at one point you may hear mischievious coyotes romping around as the music plays… Movement No. 7 - Sunset Over Longs Peak One of my hobbies is sitting on our back porch in the evening and watching the summer sun setting over Longs Peak. A solo trumpet guides the strings to a dramatic build as the sun paints a masterpiece in the evening sky. Movement No. 8 - Moment At Dawn The inspiration for my 1st symphony: The spring flowers in the meadow behind our home are amazing. One day I noticed that many of the flowers follow the path of the sun as it moves overhead in our Colorado sky. They actually turn in synchronicity with the sun. In the morning, they face east in anticipation of the new day and rest in the cool summer evening facing west. They, like all of us, have this hope; that no matter what today has brought, there will be a tomorrow, a new sunrise and a new day. Hope renews itself every morning.
