THE 2013/14 SEASON

An Engaging Conversation As Artistic Advisor to the Colorado Symphony, Andrew Litton brings a lifetime of experience, insight and knowledge of classical music, from the greatest works by the canonical composers to the most brilliant soloists on the circuit. This September, he enters his second season as curator of Masterworks, an eclectic series with something for every taste. In this conversation with Anthony Pierce, Colorado Symphony Vice President of Artistic Administration, Litton discusses some highlights of the 2013/14 Masterworks season, which encompasses 16 concerts. For complete concert listings, as well as a recording and transcript of the conversation, please visit www.coloradosymphony.org.

Anthony Pierce: We begin the series with Shostakovich 10 on Opening Weekend, September 20-22. Shostakovich is someone you’re passionate about. You really wanted to curate that with the orchestra. Tell us about that. Andrew Litton: Shostakovich was the greatest symphonist of the 20th Century and this, arguably his greatest symphony, is a masterpiece, an incredibly powerful work. It was completed after the death of Stalin, who was a notorious enemy of the composer. Shostakovich lived in fear of his life under Stalin’s regime. The second movement is probably one of the greatest depictions of hatred I’ve ever heard; whether it’s actually about Stalin, we don’t know. We don’t know much about Shostakovich’s true intentions behind his music because he kept it very much to himself, even his friends weren’t really sure. His music is laced with inner meaning. His symphonies represent a sort of CNN Headline News summary of 20th Century Soviet life and are as good a depiction of what it was like living there in those times as we could possibly have, musically speaking. I’m very excited to work with Branford Marsalis on this program, who is an old, old friend. At the beginning of both 10 SOUNDINGS 2012/13 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

Andrew Litton and Anthony Pierce discuss the 2013/14 Masteworks season, which includes love, loss, life, death and cowbells.

of our careers, we made a record together, it was my very first one. He’s a splendid player and a wonderful guy. He’s playing one of the great works for saxophone from 100 years ago, the Glazunov saxophone concerto. I’m starting with Borodin’s Overture to Prince Igor not only because it’s beautiful and popular and romantic and passionate, but because Glazunov actually orchestrated it, so there’s a connection. And then we’re continuing with John Williams’ fantastic soundtrack to the Spielberg movie Catch Me if You Can, which has a tremendous saxophone solo. So it’s a wonderful juxtaposition of two extremes for saxophone - sax at its jazziest and sax at its most classical.

AP: Andrew Litton in Concert, November 22-24, is part of our collaboration with the Denver Art Museum’s Passport to Paris exhibition. It’s all Ravel — the complete Daphnis and Chloé . AL: I love big, big pieces, because they give all of us a chance to really explore large forms. The challenge with big works is that there’s always an overall arch, so there’s actually a shape to it. It’s some of the most passionate and erotic music ever written about the two lovers

writing and incredibly pastoral in nature. Yet Ravel said, “This 34-bar melody nearly killed me.” So you have no idea of the birth pains involved sometimes in music that sounds like it just popped out.

AP: Tell me about Watkins Plays Elgar, March 14-16. AL: Paul Watkins is one of the most gifted cellists I’ve ever worked with. He’s a lovely chap who got a job playing principal cello with the BBC Symphony when he was almost pre-natal. So he's one of those prodigiously talented people who pepper our profession. He’s grown into really a wonderful artist so it will be a great pleasure to welcome him here to Colorado. We’re ending the program with Prokofiev’s Fourth Symphony. If our audience knows Romeo & Juliet by Prokofiev it’s very much in that vein. It’s extremely challenging — very virtuosic writing, lots of fun, last movement’s a big romp. This will be a Colorado Symphony premiere, and a fantastic piece to introduce to the audience. AP: Vadim Gluzman was last here with the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and now he’s playing Korngold, on the Litton Conducts Mahler program, May 2-4. AL: He’s one of the most gifted violin soloists on the circuit now. He’s astonishing technically, and he plays in a real Old World Russian sort of way. I got to know him when he was just a student in Dallas, so it’s been a fantastic journey for me to now be working with him as a full-fledged professional, having a massive career. We’ve recorded two discs together, including the Bruch Violin

Daphnis and Chloé. It deals with all sorts of mythology as the story would indicate. It’s a stunning piece full of colors and descriptive writing. This is music that was written to have a visual element but that doesn’t need the visual element to succeed. Another piece like that is Rite of Spring, which we’re ending the current season with. The day Stravinsky bought his sketchbook for Rite of Spring he was with Ravel, having lunch, and Ravel had just finished Daphnis and Chloé. That was in 1911. These composers who we now idolize and worship and respect from beyond because they’re no longer with us: They were just humans out having lunch and talking probably about silly things, too. It’s fun to think about. This Masterworks program actually represents three of Ravel’s greatest works. The Rapsodie espagnole is an incredibly colorful piece. Ravel was a Basque, from that nebulous border between Spain and France, so he was fascinated with Spain. [The piece is] full of the kind of impressionistic, exotic charms and sense and fragrances that you would expect to have from somebody writing in this period. The outer movement is pure jazz. At this point, Ravel was friends with George Gershwin. There’s definitely a symbiotic relationship there. George, in fact, asked Ravel if he could study with him, and Ravel said, “Why be a second-rate Ravel when you’re already a first-rate Gershwin?” The idea of incorporating jazz into his music was definitely influenced by George, when he saw how well it worked, and the slow movement [of the piano concerto] is one of the most beautiful movements ever written. When you listen, it seems so effortlessly blissful and still and sublime

Concerto No. 1 recording, which won the Diapason d’Or de l’Année, the top prize in France for recordings. So we’ve had our share of joint success, which is fun when you look at yourself as a kind of father figure towards somebody and then, “Look, what we can do together.” When the Korngold concerto was written by this film composer, you know, the feeling was — tsk tsk. The melodies are all from his films. What could be more tacky? One critic said, “Definitely more corn than gold.” Now that we’re over our prejudice, and now that we’re so eager for beauty in our lives, this piece is on almost every orchestra season every year. It’s become a hit with audiences that are desperate for this kind of romantic music. Korngold was a Jewish composer who was forced to emigrate during the second World War. I love pairing Korngold with Mahler because Mahler was a Jewish composer who was forced to change his religion in order to live and have a career. They make sympathetic bedfellows. Mahler 7 is a glorious, huge piece, and probably the least popular of the nine numbered Mahler symphonies, because it’s so challenging to play. Many critics have a hard time accepting the happy nature of the last movement. It’s C Major, the happy key, some of the happiest music ever written. I think people just can’t deal with it: How could he possibly write a piece like this? I think we’ve all known people in our lives who never smile, for one reason or another. But when they do it’s horrific because their faces, their physiognomy isn’t constructed in such a way that a smile is attractive. Maybe that’s the issue with this piece: People can’t deal with Mahler smiling. But it is typical Mahler. There’s the obsession with death. Remember that Mahler was one of thirteen children, over half of whom died in childbirth or childhood. There was

“Composers who we now idolize, worship and respect from beyond: They were just humans out having lunch and talking probably about silly things, too. It’s fun to think about.” always a coffin in the living room. And he also was living as a child right next to a military barracks, so he heard tattoos day in and day out. That’s why his music is filled with marches, trumpet calls. He fell in love with nature and the sounds of nature in his mid-symphonies. There’s the presence of cowbells. As a boy growing up in New York City, falling in love with this music, I couldn’t quite grasp the importance of cowbells, because the noises I heard were all gun shots, subways, sirens and car horns. Mahler said it was the last earthly sound one heard as one climbed the mountains. About 25 years ago, during a tour with my British orchestra, we were in a tiny town in Switzerland. It was about five in the afternoon, with a big fog, you couldn’t really see the mountain. But you could hear these cows in the distance, these cowbells. It suddenly hit me. You couldn’t see them, but there was this sound. And I got it. American percussionists tend to have the same question: “What’s with the cowbells?” They’re always shaking them. I have to say, “Guys, guys. It’s not that kind of party. They don’t all move at the same time.”

AP: We close the season with Porgy and Bess, May 16-18. AL: I spent my youth living about 150 yards from where the Gershwins lived for most of the time George was writing in New York, Rhapsody in Blue, all that stuff. So I’m very closely connected to George the composer. And fell in love with Porgy and Bess at an early age, and then started getting involved with performing it. The problem was, aside from performing the whole opera, the only

12 SOUNDINGS 2012/13 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

way you could do exerpts was in a much more Broadway-centric arrangement by the great Robert Russell Bennett, who treated it more like a Broadway show. There are those of us, snobs like me, who very much feel that Porgy and Bess is not a Broadway show but an opera. I was getting ready for performances with the London Symphony in 1991 and my Porgy, a great guy named Sir Willard White, said to me, “Andrew, why don’t you make your own suite? Why don’t you do your own?” And I thought, ‘That’s such hard work. I’m not a composer, an arranger, I don’t want to be.” But I sat down, and I realized Gershwin made an orchestral suite that’s twenty minutes called “Catfish Row,” a great starting point. This was the composer himself who did these shameless cuts from here to here. If he could do that, I could do that. So I put together a suite that’s one-third of the opera, in chronological order. My goal was to make it affordable for a symphony orchestra to do in a concert. I needed a piece that just had four soloists, a great chorus part. It’s basically every hit tune from the opera, and not just the songs, but the music around the songs, so you get the whole scene, the whole sequence of events: the wild party, the drug pusher, the Bible-beating woman saying, “Go back home.” It’s so much more powerful than just the tunes themselves. The Gershwin estate said, “We like it, we’d like to make it the official suite, but you’re not getting any money for it.” I said, “That’s alright. Just make sure my name’s on the program. That’s something.” I

If you are familiar with Béla, you know that he just loves to play the banjo, and put it into unique settings. Any world-class musician born with the names Béla (for Bartok), Anton (for Dvorak) and Leos (for Janacek) would seem destined to play classical music. Already a powerfully creative force in bluegrass, jazz, pop, rock and world beat, Béla at last made the classical connection with Perpetual Motion, his critically acclaimed 2001 Sony Classical recording that went on to win a pair of GRAMMYS,® including Best Classical Crossover Album, in the 44th annual GRAMMY® Awards. Collaborating with Fleck on Perpetual Motion was his long time friend and colleague Edgar Meyer, a bassist whose virtuosity defies labels and also an acclaimed composer. Béla and Edgar co-wrote and performed a double concerto for banjo, bass and the Nashville Symphony, which debuted in

Germanic and 20th century British repertoires, repertoire he explores in highly-anticipated returns to the Oregon Bach Festival, the Colorado Symphony, the National Symphony, RTE Dublin, and the Bergen Philharmonic in the current season. His opera pedigree ranges from the Renaissance and Baroque to modern works. In addition to European and Asian engagements, he’s been a guest conductor with Colorado’s Central City Opera for three successive summers, directing a premiere of his own edition of Handel’s opera Amadigi di Gaula in 2011, Puccini’s Madame Butterfly in 2010, and Handel's Rinaldo for his 2009 debut. He is the founding director of the Retrospect Ensemble, already in the vanguard of performancepractice groups with an annual series in London’s famed Wigmore Hall and appearances ranging from the Edinburgh International Festival to the Krakow Festival of Polish Music and a relationship with the Korean National Opera.

MASTERWORKS Program Notes Elijah, Op. 70 Felix Mendelssohn b. 1809 d. 1847 The score calls for winds in pairs, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings.

Duration is about 140 minutes. This is the first performance by the orchestra.

When it comes to Biblical oratorios, music lovers tend to focus upon the works of Handel, composer of the renowned Messiah amongst many others, or at least Bach, whose oratorios are fewer than Handel’s yet still masterfully structured. Rarely would one name a composer of the 19th century, for by that time — a full century after Handel and Bach — large-scale sacred works for soloists, chorus, and orchestra had fallen rather out of favor, in preference of more secular works. Yet Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847) was a composer with a taste for the past. This, after all, is the man who at the grand age of twenty launched a personal mission to revive interest in the grand religious scores of Bach, personally conducting them in their first public performances since the Baroque master’s death. So if any composer of the 1800s was going to compose oratorios, Mendelssohn would be the one. He completed two such works, first St. Paul in 1836 and a decade later Elijah. Each shows his mastery of writing oratorios, presenting a religious story with voices and instruments but without props and costumes. Elijah exists in part because of the success of St. Paul. The earlier work had premiered in Düsseldorf, in the composer’s native Germany, but his music also enjoyed a devout following in England. Not long after St. Paul’s German premiere, it made its way to England and was presented in Birmingham to great success. A determination arose in that city to have Mendelssohn write another oratorio especially for Birmingham; Elijah would be the result. Because of the composer’s busy conducting career, some years passed before realization of the dream. He would not complete Elijah until 1846. The initial text was drafted in German, and was then translated into English. It would premiere in Birmingham that summer on August 26; subsequent performances in London were conducted by the composer himself. (In these performances, we are continuing the tradition established at the premier by singing Elijah in English.) At the London performance, the audience included Prince Albert, who was so favorably impressed that he sent to Mendelssohn a gift inscribed, “To the noble artist.” Other than a single string quartet, Elijah would be Mendelssohn’s last major composition; the composer, though still a young man, would live only one more year, felled by a series of strokes at the age of thirty-eight.

Although Mendelssohn himself was more strongly drawn to the music of Bach, the flavor of Elijah is closer to that of Handel, in its strong dramatic elements that draw the listener into the story. The title character’s part is given to a bass/baritone, with other solo parts for soprano, alto, and tenor, as well as prominent passages for the chorus. The text is drawn from the Old Testament, especially though not exclusively the first book of Kings. Having based his first oratorio St. Paul on the New Testament of the Protestant religion in which he had been raised, here Mendelssohn turns back to the Jewish heritage of his grandfather Moses Mendelssohn in presenting the story of one of the most dynamic figures of the Old Testament. Elijah’s most famous passage is a chorus from Part Two, known in English as “He watching over Israel.” Its serenely flowing melody perfectly evokes the gentle confidence of its text. That mood of calm is also found in some of the oratorio’s other sections, though there is drama aplenty when the story demands it. So strongly are the characters and plot developments portrayed that one can regret that this composer’s only operas all date from his teenage years and none survive complete. Any man who can bring such dramatic effect from the human voice might have produced a masterful opera, had he only found the time to do so. Story summary: The prophet Elijah has come to the people, who are being forced by the king Ahab and his wife Jezebel to worship Baal, rather than the true God. Elijah challenges Baal to prove his supposed power with a miracle, though it is the true Lord whose presence is then made known by rainfall that ends a drought. Jezebel has threatened to execute Elijah, though he feels no fear. The Lord is watching over Israel and Elijah as well. Alone in the desert, he hears God’s voice – not in a raging storm or fire or earthquake but in a whisper – sending him back to Israel to give directions to those thousands who had turned away from Baal. Ultimately, Elijah is taken up into heaven and the people of Israel rejoice in the Lord’s name Program notes © Betsy Schwarm, author of Classical Music Insights and Operatic Insights.

Will then the Lord be no more God in Zion?

Recitative: Elijah, get thee hence An Angel Elijah! Get thee hence, Elijah! Depart and turn thee eastward: thither hide thee by Cherith’s brook. There shalt thou drink its waters; and the Lord thy God hath commanded the ravens to feed thee there: so do according unto His word. An Angel Now Cherith’s brook is dried up, Elijah; Arise and depart, and get thee to Zereparth; thither abide; For the Lord hath commanded a widow women there to sustain three; And the barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of iiol fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.

The People Lord, bow Thine ear to our prayer

Seest thou nothing arise from the deep. The Youth No; there is nothing. Elijah Have respect to the prayer of Thy servant, o Lord, my God! Unto Thee will I cry, Lord, my rock, be not silent to me! And Thy great mercies remember, Lord. The Youth Behold, a little cloud ariseth now from the waters; it is like a man’s hand! The heavens are black with cloud and with wind; the storm rusheth louder and louder!

Chorus Thanks be to God for all His mercies.

PART II Aria: Hear ye, Israel Soprano Hear ye, Israel, hear what the Lord speaketh:’Oh, hadst thou heeded my commandments’Who hath believed our report! To whom is the arm of the Lord revealed! Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and His Holy One to him oppressed by tyrants, thus saith the Lord: ‘I am He that comforteth. Be not afraid, for I am thy God! I will strengthen thee! Say, who art thou, that thou art afraid of a man that shall die; and forgettest the Lord thy Maker, who hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the earth’s foundations? Say, who art thou!’ Chorus: Be Not Afraid Chorus Be not afraid, saith God the Lord. Be not afraid; thy help is near. Though thousands languish and fall beside thee, And tens of thousands around thee perish; yet still it shal not come nigh thee. Be not afraid! He is near. Recitative and Chorus: The Lord hath exalted thee Elijah The Lord hath exalted thee from among the people, and o’er his people Israel hat made thee King. But thou, Ahab, hast done evil to provoke him to anger above all that were before thee: As if it had been a light thing for thee to walk in the sins of Jeroboam. Thou hast made a grove and an alter to Baal, and serv’d him and worshipp’d him; Thou has killed the righteous, and also taken possession. And the Lord shall smite all Isreal as a reed is shaken in the water; and He shall give Israel up, And thou shalt know He is the Lord. The Queen Have ye not heard, heard he hath prophesied against all Israel? Hath he not prophesied also against the King of Israel? And why hath he spoken in the name of the Lord? Doth Ahab govern the kingdom of Israel, while Elijah’s pow’r is greater than the King’s? The gods do so to me, and more, If by tomorrow about this time, I make not his life as the life of one of them whom he hath sacrific’d at the brook of Kishon.

MASTERWORKS Program Text Chorus We heard it with our ears. He shall perish! The Queen Hath he not destroyed Ball’s prophets? Yea, by sword he destroy’d them all. He also closed the heavens, and Called down a famine upon the land. So go ye forth and seize Elijah, for he is worth to die: slaughter him! Do unto him as he hath done.

Chorus Women: Lift thine eyes Angels Lift thine eyes to the mountains, whence cometh help. Thy help cometh from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He hath said, thy foot shall not be moved, thy Keeper will never slumber. Chorus: He, watching over Israel

Chorus She shall perish! He destroy’d them all! He also closed the heavens, and called down a famine upon the land.

Chorus He, watching over Israel, slumbers not, nor sleeps. Shouldst thou, walking in grief, languish, He will quicken thee.

Chorus: Woe to him!

Recitative: Arise, Elijah Angel Arise, Elijah, for thou has a long journey before thee. Forty days and forty nights shalt thou go, to Horeb, the mount of God.

Chorus Woe to him! He shall perish, he closed the heavens, he closed the heavens, And why hath he spoken in the name of the Lord? Let the guilty prophet perish! Woe to him, woe to him! He shall perish! He hath spoken falsely, falsely against our land, and us, as we have heard with our ears. Let the guilty prophet perish! So go ye forth and seize on him! He shall die. Recitative : Man of God Obadiah Man of God, now let my words be precious in thy sight. Thus saith Jezebel;’Elijah is worthy to die’. So the mighty gather against thee, and they have prepared a net for thy steps; that they may seize thee, that they say slay thee. Arise then, and hasten for thy life; to the wilderness journey. The Lord thy God doth go with thee: He will not fail thee, He will not forsake thee. Now begone and bless me also! Elijah Though stricken, they have not grieved. Tarry here my servant: the Lord be with thee. I journey hence to the wilderness. Aria: It is enough Elijah It is enough! O Lord, now take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers! I desire to live no longer: now let me die, for my days are but vanity. I have been very jealous for the Lord God of Hosts, for the children of Israel have broken Thy covenant, and thrown down Thine altars, and slain all Thy prophets, slain them with the sword. And I, even I only am left: and they seek my life to take it away! It is enough! O Lord, now take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers! Now let me die, Lord, take away my life!

Elijah Lord, I have labor’d in vain. Yea, I have spent my strength for naught. O that Thou woulds’t rend the heavens, that Thou wouldst come down. That the mountains would flow down at Thy presence, to make Thy Name known to Thine adversaries, through the wonders of Thy works! O Lord, why hast Thou made them to err from Thy ways? And harded their hearts that they do not fear Thee? O that I now might die! Aria: O Rest in the Lord An Angel Oh rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him, and He shall give thee thy heart’s desires. Commit thy way unto Him, and trust in Him, and fret not thyself because of evil-doers. Chorus: He that shall endure Chorus He that shall endure to the end, shall be saved. Recitative: Night falleth round me. Elijah Night falleth round me, o Lord! Be Thou not far from me! Hide not Thy face, o Lord, from me, my soul is thirsting for Thee, as a thirsty land. An Angel Arise now, get thee without, stand on the mount before the Lord: for there His glory will appear, and shine on thee! Thy face must be veiled, for He draweth near.

Recitative: See, now he sleepeth

Chorus: Behold, God the Lord

Tenor See, now he sleepeth beneath a juniper tree in the wilderness, but the angels of the Lord encamp round about all them that fear Him.

Chorus Behold, God the Lord passed by! And a mighty wind rent the mountains around, brake in pieces the rocks, brake them before the Lord. But yet the Lord was not in the tempest. Behold, God the Lord passed by! And the sea was upheaved, and the earth was shaken. But yet the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there came a fire. But yet the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there came a still small voice. And in that still voice onward came the Lord.

MASTERWORKS Program Text Recitative & Chorus: Holy is God the Lord

Aria: Then shall the righteous shine forth

Above Him stood the Seraphim, and one cried to another:

Tenor Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in their heavenly Father’s realm. Joy on their head shall be for everlasting, and all sorrow and mourning shall flee away for ever.

Seraphim Holy, holy, holy is God the Lord, the Lord Sabaoth! Now His glory hath filled all the earth. The People The fire descends from heaven! The flames consume his offering! Before Him upon your faces fall! The Lord is God, the Lord is God! O Israel hear! Our God is one Lord, and we will have no other gods before the Lord. Elijah Take all the prophets of Baal, and let not one of them escape you. Bring them down to Kishon’s brook, and there let them be slain. The People Take all the prophets of Baal and let not one of them escape us: bring all and slay them! Chorus & Recitative: Go, return upon thy way Chorus Go, return upon thy way! For the Lord yet hath left Him seven thousand in Israel, knees which have not bowed to Baal. Go, return upon thy way! Thus the Lord commandeth. Elijah I go on my way in the strength of the Lord For Thou art my Lord; and I will suffer for Thy sake. My heart is therefore glad, my glory rejoiceth; and my flesh shall also rest in hope.

Recitative: Behold, Got hath sent Elijah Soprano Behold, God hath sent Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children unto their fathers: lest the Lord shall come and smite the earth with a curse. Chorus : But the Lord from the north. The People But the Lord from the north hath raised one, who, from the rising of the sun, on his name shall call, call up on his name, and come Princes. Behold my servant, and mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth! On him the Spirit of God shall rest, the spirit of wisdom, and understanding, the spirit of might and of counsel, the spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord. Thus saith the Lord: I have raised one from the North, who on my name shall call. Solo quartet: O Come every one that thirsteth. O come ev’ryone that thirsteth, O come to the waters, O come unto Him. O hear, and your souls shall live forever.

Arioso: For the mountains shall depart. Elijah For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but Thy kindness shall not depart from me; neither shall the covenant of Thy peace be removed; but Thy kindness shall not depart from me; neither shall be removed the covenant of Thy peace. Chorus: Then did Elijah Chorus Then did Elijah the prophet break forth like a fire; his words appeared like burning torches. Mighty kings by him were overthrown. He stood on the mount of Sinai and heard the judgments of the future, and in Horeb its vengeance. And when the Lord would take him away to heaven, lo! There came a fiery chariot with fiery horses, and he went by a whirlwind to heaven.
