Spotlight The Merry Widow Think opera is just a bunch of bad actors standing around warbling depressing lyrics in a foreign language for four hours? Think again. In Eklund Opera Program Director Leigh Holman’s opinion, “park and bark”—the staging technique, or lack thereof, described above—should be illegal on every opera stage. “If you have never been to an opera and are afraid you’ll just see people frozen still shouting at you, rest assured, you’ll see none of that here,” Holman says. With this fall’s production of “The Merry Widow,” a whimsical Parisian romp written by Franz Lehár in 1905, Holman is out to prove just how enjoyable opera can be. Yes, it’s sung in a foreign language. But it’s also full of hummable melodies, can-can skirts, flirting and fun. “You’ll see beautiful gowns and beautiful people, and you’ll laugh,” Holman says.”The music is tuneful—so tuneful you might even want to sing along.” “The Merry Widow” takes place at a gala reception in Paris, where an ambassador plans to save his poverty-stricken

kingdom by sending one of his noblemen to court a fabulously wealthy woman. Like any romantic comedy worth its salt, it’s a masterpiece of mix-ups, meet-cutes and, ultimately, marriage. Holman says Eklund Opera’s setting stays true to the original with sets inspired by Maxim’s, a famous Art Nouveau nightclub frequented by titans of the art world at the turn of the century, including Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec and Lehár himself. “There will be all these beautiful details and pops of red, just like at Maxim’s.” While the lively, light-hearted opera is a perfect introduction to the genre for newcomers, Holman says it’s equally enjoyable for die-hards. “Viennese operetta buffs are similar to Gilbert and Sullivan buffs—they know the piece, the music and the humor,” Holman says. “They keep coming back to enjoy this piece over and over again, as true enthusiasts do.” Sung in English with German subtitles Oct. 27-29, 7:30 p.m. in Macky Auditorium Tickets start at $20

Spotlight
The Triplets of Belleville Cine-Concert
Charlie Chaplin meets Tim Burton. The Marqius de Sade meets Lance Armstrong. Somehow, it’s impossible to describe “The Triplets of Belleville” with references or comparisons. It’s something you just have to see for yourself.
“There is not even a way I can tell you what the film is ‘like,’ because I can’t think of another film ‘like’ it,” wrote the famous film critic Roger Ebert in 2003. “To call it weird would be a cowardly evasion. It is creepy, eccentric, eerie, flaky, freaky, funky, grotesque, inscrutable, kinky, kooky, magical, oddball, spooky, uncanny, uncouth and unearthly. “None of [these words] do the trick, either,” he admitted. “I am completely failing to do justice to this film.” What sort of movie leaves the world’s most famous film critic bewitched and at a loss for words? The sort that’s animated yet edgy enough to gain a cult following at Cannes. The sort whose haunting style contrasts perfectly with a soundtrack of upbeat, irresistible jazz. The sort that’s about French style, cycling, family relationships and urban life, all at the same time. Boulderites who love quirk, camp and cinema have the chance to check out the unique spectacle of “Triplets” on Macky

Auditorium’s big screen this fall. Best of all, they’ll get to hear the movie’s swinging score performed live by Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville. The story of “Triplets” takes place in Belleville, a fictional European capital that resembles Paris. An old woman buys her young grandson a bike, and years later, he becomes the world’s fastest cyclist. When he’s suddenly kidnapped by a gambling ring, his grandmother takes to the streets with her trusty dog and a trio of singers to track him down. The New York Times calls it a “tour de force of ink-washed, crosshatched mischief, and unlikely sublimity.” The Age calls it “a gloriously oddball animation, adorned with superb songs that glitter like lights on the Seine and clatter like old cars on cobblestones.” But at its heart, “Triplets” isn’t a string of adjectives. It’s a feeling you can’t quite articulate … unless you’re Roger Ebert; “‘The Triplets of Belleville’ will have you walking out of the theater with a goofy damn grin on your face, wondering what just happened to you.”

THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE CINE-CONCERT
The Film
It has been more than a decade since the release of the Franco-Québécois animated movie, The Triplets of Belleville. Many still remember the film’s resounding success and incredible soundtrack, which was acclaimed many times at the Academy Awards, the Genie Awards and the French Césars. This much beloved animated film is screened as composer Benoît Charest leads Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville in the live performance of his original score for the film, including his Academy Award-nominated best song “Belleville Rendez-vous.” In the spirit of the film, Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville immediately transports audiences to the exciting streets of 1920s Paris and Le Jazz Hot. The musical ensemble is made up of eight musicians with wacky instruments reminiscent of 1930s France. The terrific Belleville Orchestra blends live music and cinema, enticing audiences into their colorful Parisian period cabaret.
The Story
Adopted by his nearsighted grandmother, Madame Souza, Champion is a lonely little boy. Noticing that the lad is never happier than on a bicycle, Madame Souza puts him through a rigorous training process. Years go by and Champion becomes worthy of his name. Now he is ready to enter the world-famous cycling race, the Tour de France. However, during the contest, two mysterious, square-shouldered henchmen in black kidnap Champion. Madame Souza and her faithful dog Bruno set out to rescue him. Their quest takes them across the ocean to a giant megalopolis called Belleville and pulls them toward a trio of eccentric jazz-era divas, the renowned Triplets of Belleville. The three music hall stars decide to take Madame Souza and Bruno under their wing. The motley sleuths follow the clues to an underground speakeasy, where they entertain the crowd. Thanks to Bruno’s brilliant sense of smell, the chase is on! But will they succeed in beating the devilish plans of the evil French mafia?
The Director
Sylvain Chomet was born in 1963 in Maisons-Laffitte, France. In 1982, he graduated from high school specializing in art and in 1987 received a diploma from the prestigious comic strip studio at Angoulême. In 1986, he published his first book-length comic, Secrets of the Dragonfly (Futuropolis), and drew an adaptation of a Victor Hugo novel, Bug-Jargal, in collaboration with Nicolas de Crécy. Moving to London to work as an animator at the Richard Purdum studio in September 1988, he established a London-based freelance practice working on commercials for clients such as Swissair, Principality, Swinton and Renault. In 1991, Chomet started work on his first animated film project, The Old Lady and the Pigeons, with backgrounds designed by Nicolas de Crécy. In 1992, he wrote the script for a comic titled The Bridge in Mud (Glénat), a science fiction and historical saga, now in its fourth episode. The following year, he wrote the story Léon-la-Came, drawn by Nicolas de Crécy and serialized in (A SUIVRE) magazine. The book version was published by Casterman in 1995. It won the René Goscinny Prize in January 1996. Since 1993, Sylvain Chomet has been based in Canada. He spent 1995 and 1996 finishing his short film The Old Lady and the Pigeons. This film won the Cartoon d’Or prize, the Grand Prize at the Annecy Festival, a BAFTA, the Audience Prize and the Jury Prize at the Angers Premiers Plans Festival and received nominations for both the French Césars and for the Academy Awards. In early 1997, Sylvain Chomet published Ugly, poor and sick, again with Nicolas de Crécy. The book version (Casterman) won the Alph-Art Best Comic Prize at the Angoulême Comic Strip Festival in 1997. Ben Charest, an Academy Award-nominated composer from Montreal, has written more than 20 film scores, including the 2004 film The Triplets of Belleville, which has earned him many awards. Ben studied at McGill and Montreal Universities before learning his trade touring as a sideman with various bands. A versatile composer and accomplished jazz guitarist regularly performing with some of Montreal’s finest musicians, Ben wrote his first score in 1992 for an NFB documentary. He is presently writing music for his jazz organ trio and touring with Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville.
Members of the Orchestre
Dan Thouin (Keyboard & Accordion)
When he first sat behind the family organ, Daniel Thouin was 7. Ten years later, he was studying classical piano. Soon he started flirting with the jazz scene. Then, he took an interest in electronica and pop music, collaborating with the likes of Mara Tremblay, Yann Perreau and Marie-Jo Thério, and touring with Jason Bajada and Ghislain Poirier. In 2002, Thouin assembled the Large Ensemble, an all-star local group mixing jazz and rock. Informed by Miles Davis’ late 1960s experiments, Thouin used the band to flex his improvisational muscles.
Alain Bastien (Drums)
Born in Shawinigan, Quebec, Alain Bastien, although self-taught from the age of 15, pursued musical studies at the Université de Montréal, where he achieved a BA in jazz performance. For the last 20 years, he has been working in countless musical contexts, from R&B, funk and Latin to popular, although jazz remains the primary vehicle in which he operates. He has played in jazz festivals all around Canada, the U.S., France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, Mexico and China. Jean Beaudet, Yves Léveillé, Yannick Rieu, Benoît Charest, Térez Montcalm, Carl Naud and Abraham Barrera are some of the artists he has worked with over the years.

Les Armateurs (Production Company)
Les Armateurs, founded by Didier Brunner in 1994, have brought two new writer-directors to the world of cartoon films, Michel Ocelot and Sylvain Chomet. The aim of the company is to discover talent and to produce a range of original and ambitious work aimed at family audiences and young adults.
Production Notes
The Triplets of Belleville was born at the International Animated Film Festival of Annecy. We had just given seven years of our lives, our energy and passion, to finance and make The Old Lady and the Pigeons, a 26-minute cartoon costing more than €800,000. The writing and directing talent revealed in this film was such that I knew I wanted to pursue my collaboration with Sylvain more ambitiously, taking even greater risks. I wanted to produce his first feature film and give him an opportunity to express the full extent of his gifts. It was time to capitalize on the theatrical success of Kirikou and the Witch, which made Les Armateurs a credible partner in the field of ambitious animated features and to build on the success of The Old Lady and the Pigeons within the profession (Oscars, BAFTA, Cesar, Annecy, etc.…). Despite the magnificent graphics of The Triplets of Belleville, neither the story nor the setting are aimed specifically at a young audience. I knew that we were asking our partners to accompany us on an innovative and risky venture, given the expense of the production. We held true to our course, which is one of the fundamental qualities of Les Armateurs. The crew has shown admirable resilience and today we are proud to be able to steer our ship of fantasy into a safe harbor. ―Didier Brunner

Spotlight Faculty Tuesdays
At CU Boulder, performing arts events are so numerous that they’re practically a daily occurrence. So we’ll excuse you if you hadn’t yet heard about Faculty Tuesdays.
provide a unique mix of performance instruction for students, educational opportunities for fellow faculty members and unparalleled entertainment for music-loving local residents.
The chamber music series, which every week features Grammy winners, Pulitzer Prize finalists, internationally-published scholars and musicians who have performed with the world’s best orchestras, is the greatest recurring on-campus event you never knew existed. Between the tantalizing variety of music (flamenco guitar, bassoon chamber works and everything in between), the esteemed names on the program and the more-than-fair price of zero dollars, there’s no reason not to check out this exciting series.
This fall, the series runs the gamut, from classics by Chopin and Tchaikovsky to an evening of newer works celebrating planet Earth. On Oct. 24, the College of Music marks 100 years of Finnish independence in a concert featuring several faculty members—Jennifer Bird, Paul Erhard, Hsing-ay Hsu, Yoshi Ishikawa, David Korevaar, Margaret McDonald (piano, pictured below), Harumi Rhodes, Daniel Silver and Michael Thornton (horn, pictured below)—performing works by Jean Sibelius and other famous Finns.
“The atmosphere is terrific, with an enthusiastic audience, great community support and so many students, colleagues and friends of the college who come to these events,” says faculty pianist David Korevaar, a Juilliard graduate and award-winning Ravel scholar who appears three times this fall. “Whether listening or performing, I’m always happy to be there.” A beloved 17-year tradition, Faculty Tuesdays often pack Grusin Hall to capacity with performances by the many remarkable artists who teach at the College of Music. These weekly concerts

“We wanted to celebrate Finland and the new cultural exchange that’s happening between the college and music institutions there,” says Daniel Kellogg, who is helping organize the recital. The concert concludes with the world premiere of “Ladun hiihan laulajille,” a piece written by graduate student composer and Finnish Jubilee Composition Scholarship winner Conor Brown. Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29-Dec. 12 Free and open to the public

When you have that newlywed glow, everything seems rosy. So when Jean Richter started feeling short of breath, she wasn’t initially concerned. But then her symptoms worsened and her beloved husband, Dave, had to rush her to the Foothills Hospital Emergency Department. Jean was diagnosed with heart failure, a chronic condition that has a 50% survival rate within five years of diagnosis if not treated correctly. Luckily for Jean, Boulder Community Health now offers the only specialized Heart Failure Clinic in Boulder County. Dr. Scott Blois’s expertise with the latest treatment options set Jean on a remarkable journey back to a full active life. “I have a wonderful husband, five incredible daughters and 13 grandkids I adore,” says Jean. “I’m so happy we can hike, travel and have fun together again.” Read Jean’s story at bch.org/healinghearts or call 303-442-2395 for information about Boulder County’s first Heart Failure Clinic.

THE EKLUND OPERA PROGRAM
Recognizing the importance of the arts and live vocal performance in an increasingly distracted world, longtime Boulder resident Paul Eklund made a generous gift in October 2014 to help establish a $2 million endowment at the CU Boulder College of Music. Funding from the endowment helps support three opera productions each academic year, the CU New Opera Workshop and an opera scenes program for new students.
