Remembering Diane Dunn In the late 90s, the Artist Series found itself at a crossroads. Recent seasons had reaped backto-back deficit years. The advisory board had disbanded. The programming had been trimmed to a meager three or four events per year. It was a “now or never” kind of moment. Was there a way to keep the Artist Series afloat? Or was it time to retire it for good? To hear her colleagues tell it now, Diane Dunn—longtime advisory board member and dear friend of the Artist Series—swooped in to save the day, and not a moment too soon. With a single offer, Diane became a much-needed knight in shining armor for CU’s presenting series.

“Diane had a quiet passion for things. And she truly believed in her heart that art is what makes life worth living,” says CU Presents Executive Director Joan McLean Braun. “She said, ‘I think you need to do more, not less. You need more people to give. I’m willing to give, and I’m willing to lead the giving team.’” Diane offered to reinstate the Artist Series Advisory Board and to serve as its first chair. In the years that followed, she became one of the most fierce and vocal advocates of the program. “Diane was generous with her time, with her resources, with her enthusiasm for other board members. That effort gave us the traction we needed. It gave us the support and advocacy to turn 6

things around,” says Braun. The rest, as they say, is history. Because you’re sitting here in Macky, you know the Artist Series remains a beacon for world-class performers, in part because of Diane’s enthusiasm for giving. Unfortunately, Diane passed away earlier this year from pancreatic cancer. But her advocacy lives on through those she influenced over the years. “Diane was instrumental in getting me fully engaged with this board and its mission,” says Artist Series Advisory Board Chair Daryl James. “She would say something that challenged you to think harder and commit more, and did it in such a positive way that the only answer you could give her was ‘yes.’ She believed in and gave so much to the Artist Series, leading us by example to every year support the series with enthusiasm and financial help. Diane leaves a legacy of stellar performing arts, and you can feel it with every performance.”

CU Presents 2019-20 Season · cupresents.org · 303-492-8008

Speaking about her impact, Diane’s husband Dick Dunn says: “Just a few people—at the right place and time—resuscitated the Artist Series and made such a great difference in its trajectory. That ‘don’t stop and rest’ attitude can be daunting at times, but it’s essential. “The Artist Series parallels what happens with great performers: They come out of a draining, intense performance with more energy than they went in. I hope it’s that way for the Artist Series Advisory Board.”

ARTIST SERIES Chick Corea Trilogy (Oct. 9) is sponsored by friends of Diane Dunn. In celebration of the life of Diane Dunn, Pilobolus (March 2, 2020) is sponsored by Dick Dunn.

Nobuntu infuses mbube with a feminine touch By Becca Vaclavik Nobuntu formed eight years ago. The five women who make up the ensemble—Zanele Manhenga, Thandeka Moyo, Duduzile Sibanda, Heather Dube and Joyline Sibanda—each answered an audition call for women who could sing a cappella. “We are all based out of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. We already knew each other from way back; some of us were already friends. Working in the arts, in different productions, some of us had already worked together before. It was a pleasure to end up in a group with people 12

who already knew one another,” says the ensemble, who prefer to speak as a collective in interviews. “The inspiration for the group came from a need to fill a gap in our country,” says Nobuntu. “A cappella was one form of music that wasn’t occupied by women already, especially our traditional style, called mbube.” Boulder audiences will have the opportunity to hear songs from the group’s latest album “Obabes beMbube,” which they say means “The Babes of Mbube.” The title track pays homage to mbube and Nobuntu’s female perspective. “It’s about how we’ve tackled this male-dominated genre.” The name “Nobuntu” is a play on words, meant to speak to the gender gap in mbube, as well as

Zimbabwean values they hope to bring to audiences across the globe. It is based on “Ubuntu,” an African concept that represents joy, love, humility, caretaking and respect. Here, they’ve paired the word with “No,” which means “mother” in Ndebele. “‘Ubuntu’ means all things good in the growth and existence of people. We are ‘The Mothers of Ubuntu,’ and we intend to spread the attributes of Ubuntu through our music.”

ARTIST SERIES Nobuntu brings its signature brand of a cappella to Macky Auditorium on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $20.

with Christian McBride and Brian Blade Wednesday, Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m. Chick Corea, piano Christian McBride, bass Brian Blade, drums

Chick Corea brings together bass powerhouse Christian McBride and drum master Brian Blade in a trio that earned two Grammy Awards for their first outing, 2014’s landmark 3-CD set Trilogy. “Both are master musicians and together we have an easy rapport,” Corea says of McBride and Blade.

“There is a lot of give and take in our music. It’s always a lot of fun.” The trio’s long-awaited follow-up album, Trilogy 2, arrives this fall on Concord Records. The two-disc set features tracks hand-picked by Corea from throughout the trio’s 2016 world tour, capturing the feel of an electrifying concert program. The material spans a range of inspirations, from Great American Songbook standards to jazz classics, reaching back into Corea’s own catalog, as well as that of some of his most renowned collaborators, including Miles Davis and Joe Henderson.

Chick Corea Trilogy with Christian McBride and Brian Blade: Oct. 9, 2019

Chick Corea Trilogy

Chick Corea Trilogy with Christian McBride and Brian Blade: Oct. 9, 2019

About the performers About Chick Corea

Chick Corea has attained iconic status in music. The keyboardist, composer and bandleader is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, as well as the fourth-most nominated artist in Grammy Awards history, with 63 nods and 22 wins, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Corea has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career since playing with the genre-shattering bands of Miles Davis in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Yet Corea has never been more productive than in the 21st century, whether playing acoustic piano or electric keyboards, leading multiple bands, performing solo or collaborating with a who’s who of music. Underscoring this, he has been named Artist of the Year three times this decade in the DownBeat Readers Poll. Born in 1941 in Massachusetts, Corea remains a tireless creative spirit, continually reinventing himself through his art. As The New York Times has said, he is “a luminary, ebullient and eternally youthful.”

About Christian McBride

Four-time Grammy-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride’s path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded and most respected figures in the music world today. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at The Juilliard School. There, he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. In 2000, the lessons of the road came together in the formation of what would become his longest-running project, the Christian McBride Band. In 2009, McBride began focusing this same energy through a more traditional lens with the debut of his critically acclaimed Inside Straight quintet, and again with the Christian McBride Big Band, whose 2012 release The Good Feeling won the Grammy for Best Large Ensemble Jazz C-2

Album. As his career entered its third decade, McBride added the role of mentor, tapping two rising stars—pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.—for the Christian McBride Trio’s Grammy-nominated album Out Here.

About Brian Blade

Brian Blade, the multi-talented young veteran, is already widely respected in the jazz world as a drummer, composer and leader of Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band, with whom he has released three albums. He is also known as the drummer for many heroes of the music world, including Daniel Lanois, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Wayne Shorter, Seal, Bill Frisell and Emmylou Harris. Blade was born on July 25, 1970, in Shreveport, Louisiana. During his childhood, Blade heard gospel music in his everyday life, as well as the music of Al Green; Stevie Wonder; Earth, Wind and Fire; and the Staple Singers. In elementary school, his music appreciation teacher, Lucy Bond, introduced her students to the music of Maurice Ravel and in this class, Blade would play the recorder and various melodic percussion instruments associated with the Carl Orff pedagogy. Since 2000, Blade has been part of the Wayne Shorter Quartet with Danilo Perez and John Patitucci. His 2009 album Mama Rosa marked a new endeavor for Blade: a lovingly crafted, emotionally affecting song cycle that’s deeply rooted in a rich vein of personal experience. “All That Was Yesterday,” “You’ll Always Be My Baby” and “Nature’s Law” show Blade to be a soulful and expressive vocalist and songwriter capable of rendering evocative stories that resonate with insight and empathy. “Revealing more of ourselves is always daunting,” says Blade, “But I feel like I need to keep challenging myself and peeling away layers to get to the core of who I am and what I have to offer.”

Classic holiday film gets Heggie and Scheer’s operatic treatment in Macky By Pranathi Durgempudi One of the most beloved onscreen holiday classics has been taking the opera stage by storm since 2016. After touring across the United States, esteemed composer Jake Heggie and renowned librettist Gene Scheer’s It’s a Wonderful Life returns home to the Eklund Opera Program and Macky Auditorium—this time in its final stage with a few exciting alterations. When Heggie was first commissioned to create a holiday-themed opera by a friend at Houston Grand Opera, he was faced with the challenge of choosing a story that could be translated into an operatic production. After wading through classics like 22

How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Frosty the Snowman, Heggie landed on It’s a Wonderful Life. “At its core, there’s a man thinking of taking his life because he doesn’t recognize his value on the planet. With magic realism, an angel comes and intervenes and shows him the value of his life. There is a great sense of redemption. Those are all great elements for an operatic landscape,” Heggie explains. The opera will feature the familiar and widely adored story of George Bailey in the small town of Bedford Falls. Bailey dreams of leaving town to explore the far corners of the world. But after he marries his sweetheart Mary Hatch and develops deeper roots in the town, that dream slowly becomes quashed. His father dies suddenly, and the town banker threatens to overrun his family business, the Building and Loan, in the aftermath. However, Bailey’s visions of adventure nearly obscure how truly wonderful his life is. On Christmas Eve,

Bailey’s emotional turmoil comes to a head when a horrible mistake threatens to dismantle the Building and Loan and land him in jail. In a dark moment—feeling he’s betrayed his family and close to taking his own life—Bailey is visited by a guardian angel sent down to his aid. However, the angel isn’t quite as you might remember. “In the movie, it’s Clarence, but in the opera it is Clara,” Heggie notes. “She walks with him step-by-step through the most important events of his life where his presence changed the course of other people’s lives. It’s then that he recognizes his value as a human being and as a person.” Not unlike the story of George Bailey, the operatic production of It’s a Wonderful Life has taken a rather winding but full-circle path in order to return to CU Boulder in its completed incarnation. Heggie first brought his draft of the opera to be workshopped at the acclaimed CU New Opera Workshop (CU NOW) in the summer of 2016, where the Eklund Opera Program team spent three weeks digging into and revising the piece until it was performance-ready. “It’s a Wonderful Life is a story about hope and about community. It touched everybody that was part of the workshop that year,” reminisces Leigh Holman, director of the Eklund Opera Program. The opera then had its world premiere at Houston Grand Opera, but Heggie realized that there was still much work left to be done. After a series of rewrites, cuts and additions, the opera then had a run at Indiana University. This production provided another learning opportunity for Heggie,

Scheer and their team to reshape the opera even further. “The only way you really learn about a theatre piece is when it’s up on its feet in front of people. That’s when you learn about the information: what’s taking too long, what’s not long enough, what’s missing, and what’s extraneous so that you can start trimming,” says Heggie of the process. When the opera landed next at San Francisco Opera in fall 2017, aspects of the physical production had changed dramatically. Heggie and Scheer had cut an entire character, expanded arias to showcase soaring vocal moments and added two duets that Heggie hopes will provide audiences with a more intimate understanding of the characters. When the opera returns to Macky Auditorium through the Eklund Opera Program starting Nov. 15, it will feature the same libretto set to a stunning backdrop: a brand new production with freshly designed costumes and sets. Heggie and

Scheer couldn’t be more thrilled to be sharing this revamped version of the opera and its heartwarming message with the new cast and to experience the holiday magic alongside the audience on opening night. “It’s a beautiful story with a big message,” Heggie says. “The film captures it indelibly in this one way, but it lends itself well to telling on the stage as well. I’m very excited about it.”

EKLUND OPERA PROGRAM It’s a Wonderful Life runs from Nov. 15 through 17. Tickets start at $15.

Imig Music Building construction: Coming together By Jessie Bauters If you were around campus this summer, you probably watched as the gaping hole that had appeared south of Imig Music Building in the spring slowly disappeared with the warmer weather. That’s because as Music Buffs were off performing in summer festivals or interning at opera companies and orchestras, an army of engineers, architects, carpenters and contractors was working diligently through the heat of summer to make the College of Music expansion come to life. 26

“Our contractors are making great progress, and it’s exciting to really start seeing the building take shape.” Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Operations John Davis has been doing regular walkthroughs of the site along Wardenburg Drive since construction began in January. He says that although crews lost about two weeks due to snow during late spring, now that the ground level is finished, weatherrelated delays should be minimized going forward. Steel beams went up in July and outer walls started appearing in August—just in time for students and faculty to return to campus for the fall. Davis says the grand new entryway to the building, in addition to being a fitting welcome to members of the college community, will be a fitting gateway to the CU Boulder campus as well. “Patrons are

going to feel like it’s a more special place. It’ll still have the history, but it’ll be much more welcoming and classy. It’ll inspire a lot of people.” And most importantly, when the expansion opens a year from now, it will be a source of pride for all the musicians who will call it home over the College of Music’s second century. “The facilities will be something we can be proud of, especially knowing that the campus and the community value what we’re doing.”
