On behalf of the University of Colorado and the broader Boulder community, welcome to the 75th Conference on World Affairs. Last spring, the Chancellor challenged us to design a two and a halfday program focused entirely on climate change, the preeminent issue of our time. Work began to realize that vision for CWA 2023. In addition to local and faculty speakers, we welcome the panelists who have traveled to be with us. We appreciate the work of the office staff who have supported us during this endeavor.

Our panels touch on a multitude of topics relating to climate change. Our students chose the topics with input from a core group of community volunteers. We are grateful for the enthusiasm and interest of the faculty. As we face the many problems afflicting our planet, we look forward to seeing you during these discussions and hope our interactions will stimulate and engage you, enabling all of us to seek solutions to climate change.

This year’s Conference opens with a celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the CWA. Festivities include jazz music, a retrospective short film, and a keynote address by environmentalist and filmmaker James Balog.

Thanks to the late Professor Howard Higman, who initiated this incredible tradition 75 years ago, and to the thousands of panelists, volunteers, and staff who have worked tirelessly over the years to sustain it.

Here’s to a great CWA 2023!
