Artwork by Sarah Bowling & Amber Cobb Their sculptures and paintings will be on view August 24 through October 14 at the Lakewood Cultural Center.
Sarah Bowling and Amber Cobb stand out for their compelling and gutsy work. Bowling is a Denver native who received a BFA in painting and sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Cobb, originally from St. Louis, holds an MFA in sculpture from the University of Colorado and is the head of foundations at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in Lakewood. “Not only are there aesthetic connections between their works including references to the body and domesticity, but both women are exploring power dynamics and issues with gender as conceptual themes,” said Arts Programming Curator Laine Godsey. She paired their work in the two-person exhibition, “Corporeal.” BRAVO talked with the artists to learn more. BRAVO: Is there a particular message or feeling you aim to communicate with the viewer through the work in this exhibition? Sarah Bowling: When creating work for this exhibition, I was thinking about power dynamics within intimacy – between lovers but also between self and society – in terms of a desire to find closeness with someone and what restricts us from finding that or expressing that desire. I’m also interested in this idea of making the viewer question whether they are viewer or voyeur. Am I inviting them to participate? Or are they just simply watching? Amber Cobb: I want people to approach the artwork from their own experiences in life. I like things that are in-between, a little ambiguous, with multiple viewpoints. I hope that the artwork opens up a conversation, a dialogue that provokes more questions. The overall themes are intimacy, comfort and personal relationships. I’m thinking about the positive side and also the
negative side of intimacy, which we sometimes tend to ignore. BRAVO: In this two-person show, how do your works play off of each other visually and conceptually? SB: I use a lot of concrete, which is such a heavy material, but I’m trying to use it in a way that makes it look light and soft and cushiony. And Amber might use a really light material like silicone, but she uses it in a way to try to evoke weight and show sag and the effect of gravity on it. I think that juxtaposition is interesting. Both of the works exhibit femininity, but not in the traditional sense. The works are vulnerable but also selfcelebratory and unapologetically selfish. They’re taking up space, they demand attention. Both of our work is extremely personal, and I think there is a certain strength in that and it comes across in the work. BRAVO: How do your material choices help communicate your concept? AC: Material is usually my starting point. From there, I go through a series of experiments. I always want to touch and feel something, build it, tear it apart, rebuild it and manipulate it. That’s how I discover new ways of communicating to the viewer and to myself. It’s almost a subconscious process. SB: The found objects in my work are objects that I have lived with, and they all have memories embedded into them. And I like the challenge of using it in a way that makes people wonder if it’s actually concrete. Being a woman using concrete throws people off a little, which I like. continued on page 28

Lakewood Looks Back:
SPIRIT OF LAKEWOOD on view through October 7
What is it that makes Lakewood the place it is today? That was the question that the Lakewood Heritage Center (LHC) contemplated 14 years ago when staff set out to develop a museum exhibition about Lakewood’s history. The “Spirit of Lakewood” has artifacts and photographs on display that feature the stories of community members from the past. The exhibition serves as a reminder of a bygone time. The displays show a time when connecting with your friends didn’t happen by posting an online party invitation but rather by hanging a lit lantern from the cottonwood trees at West Colfax and Holland Street. That’s how the neighbors knew the Guebelle family was hosting a barn dance. The exhibition highlights stories of persistence and entrepreneurship exemplified by area resident Jacob Lederman, one of seven children of Polish immigrants who attended Washington Heights School and tried his hand in dairy and poultry farming before becoming a successful motel owner. There are the stories that connect one generation to the next as shown in a display about the nostalgically remembered Tally Ho restaurant at 7655 W. Alameda Ave. It was where backers of the 1969 effort to create what became the City of Lakewood planned some of the city’s incorporation. In fact, you will occasionally find Tally Ho co-owner Billy Wilson’s grown daughter Billi MavromatisJacobson greeting visitors in person with a warm and welcoming smile at the entrance of LHC’s Visitor Center.
And, not to be forgotten is the Lakewood High School cheerleader’s megaphone. Recall the attire that would have been worn to those 1960s football games? The artifacts displayed in the current “Spirit of Lakewood” exhibition are just a small number of the Heritage Center’s collection consisting of more than 40,000 objects. As we explore all that makes Lakewood a special place, it is time to tuck some of these items away for safekeeping and pull out some other artifacts that need to be seen. Stop by the “Spirit of Lakewood” exhibition and identify your favorite artifact before it closes on October 7, 2018. BEHIND THE SCENES: CURATING A WORLD-CLASS SERIES “A key consideration in curating our performing arts series is to identify programs that present well in our theater,” said Susan Martin, LCC Presents curator. “The large stage and 320-seat theater — with 12 rows on the first level and four in the balcony — create an intimate performance space. Often, from almost the very first tune or opening scene, you can feel a palpable connection between the performers and the audience. NEW ARTWORK BY SARAH BOWLING & AMBER COBB continued from page 6 BRAVO: How did creating these works affect you as an artist? Did you discover a new idea you might want to explore further in future work? SB: I created mostly new work for this show, a big piece with acrylic nails, chainmailed together, concrete pieces that have an imprint, a recessed space that is filled with jewels. For me, that imprint is like a painful memory. I think that’s another connection between our work. We’re both thinking of the permanence of certain situations and how that carries through. AC: The new paintings in this show most impacted my process, which has completely slowed down to where it’s very meditative, more tender and loving whereas the process with my sculpture and silicone forms is more rough and intuitive. For the new work, I used knitted blankets, afghans or baby blankets — projecting the shadows on the surface of a canvas and only drawing out and painting the negative space. Normally, when we look at a blanket, we look at the yarn, but we don’t really look at the space in between. The blankets have a gridlike pattern, but because it is a soft material and squishy, the grid is also organic, it has been disrupted through the softness. So, I’m focusing on the negative spaces — and I don’t mean negative always in a bad way, it’s an important part. Like in relationships, there is a scary part of being intimate with someone and that’s often overlooked because the other parts are so fun.
New for this exhibition, Godsey has created an audio guide, which you can access in the gallery space by dialing in from your mobile phone. “When we talk about contemporary art, many of these works are first accessed by their visual intrigue — they are incredibly beautiful to look at. The audio guide will provide some insight but leave room for the viewer to interpret the work’s meaning from their own experiences,” she noted.
