Introducing Kids to Theater Through
STUDENT MATINEES Each school year, Lone Tree Arts Center welcomes 4,000 or more children to student matinees. Their eagerness and happy chatter give it all away: They can’t wait to experience the wonder of live theater with classmates on a coveted field trip day! Chances are, few of them give much thought to the volumes of educational research that suggests students gain lasting benefits—such as enhanced creative thinking, problem-solving, and civic engagement—when they experience arts and culture.1 But the team at the Arts Center knows the importance of introducing children to the arts as part of

a well-rounded education. That is why in 2012, just months after opening our doors, a student matinee program took shape, and it filled a need in the south metro area for professional performances that make learning center stage. Today, the Arts Center is known for presenting first-class local and national touring productions that are low-cost, accessible to all students, and unique in our region. Up to 45 elementary and secondary schools from across the Denver area attend matinee performances in our Main Stage Theater each September through May. “We look forward to matinee days when busloads of students arrive at our front
STUDENT PROGRAMMING door,” explains Lisa Rigsby Peterson, the Arts Center’s executive director. “I think our staff and volunteers get as excited as the students, knowing that we have wonderful performances to share in our theater!” So far, nearly 25,000 students representing the seven-county metro area have visited the Arts Center to enjoy top-notch shows that weave together artistry and curriculum. Themes such as science, health, dance, music, and classic literature come to life through drama, storytelling, humor, and interactivity. Most performances include “talk-backs” where performers and presenters engage with the students after the show. In the 2017–18 season, elementary students will be in for electrifying, hilarious, and transformative moments with Doktor Kaboom!; My Father’s Dragon; Click Clack Moo; Flight School: The Musical; and Butterflies. Older students will be captivated by first-person stories of space
more than students can afford to pay. Through corporate partnerships and philanthropic support, including grants from Xcel Energy Foundation and U.S. Bank Foundation, we offer free or reduced admission so that cost is never a barrier for students to have a theater outing at the Arts Center. In addition, the Lone Tree Arts Center Guild has provided more than 1,200 scholarships since 2015 for students to attend performances. “The arts open new worlds to young people,” shares Linda Castaneda, who chairs the Guild’s education committee. “Seeing wonder and joy on their faces and hearing them laugh is the reason we work so hard to sponsor as many students as we can.” The Arts Center has launched a unique outreach program for Title 1 schools in underserved communities. Besides helping with admission scholarships and reimbursing schools for bus transportation, a team of Arts Center staff and volunteer ambassadors make classroom visits a few weeks before the field trips. Ambassadors extend welcome, engage students in a learning activity, and help them get excited about their first visit to our venue. Jeannine Madden, an Arts Center volunteer and one of our first school Ambassadors sees first-hand how this outreach is making a significant and memorable impact on the lives of students. “Not only do the children get to enjoy a stellar production, but they get to do so at a place that truly welcomes and wants them to be here!” she explains. “Hopefully, these experiences will inspire them to explore arts and culture as they grow.”

Terry Virts always wanted to be an astronaut, so you might be surprised to learn the former International Space Station commander’s favorite planet—the Earth. But it was when he was farthest away from his home that he best appreciated the beauty of our world, and he shares that perspective through the stunning photos and videos he took through the station’s 360-degree viewing module.

A childhood in East Africa gave Emmy Awardwinning cinematographer Bob Poole a fierce curiosity about the natural world as well as an adventurous spirit. Now, for a new, 6-part PBS/ Nat Geo International series, Bob is drawing on that experience to document the rebirth of a lost Eden: Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, a jewel of Africa’s parks system until civil war almost destroyed it. There, he joined forces with rangers and scientists (including his sister, renowned elephant researcher Joyce Poole), on perhaps the biggest conservation project on the planet—and learned that the wild places we’ve broken can be put back together. Classic Albums Live: Abbey Road Saturday, October 7 at 8pm
Sponsored by
Tonight’s performance includes: Side A: 1. Come Together 2. Something 3. Maxwell’s Silver Hammer 4. Oh! Darling 5. Octopus’s Garden 6. I Want You (She’s So Heavy) Side B: 1. Here Comes the Sun 2. Because 3. Medley 4. Her Majesty String Arrangements: Alex McMaster Horn Arrangements: Braxton Hicks Intermission after the album followed by a best of the Beatles second set
Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live takes the greatest albums and recreates them live on stage—note for note, cut for cut, using the best musicians. “Think of it as a recital,” says Martin. “These albums are historic and stand the test of time.” Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic Albums Live has found success in concentrating solely on the music. “We don’t dress up or wear any sort of costume. We just stand there and play. All of our energy is put into the music. We want the performance to sound exactly like the album,” says Martin. With over a hundred shows a year across North America, Classic Albums Live has seen massive success in performing arts centers and theaters. Fans in Texas, Las Vegas, Florida, New York, and central and east coast Canada have all continued to support the series and make it a sustaining, successful show. “We grew while others withdrew,” says Martin, commenting on the decline of concert ticket sales. “We created something that endures and connects. These albums are sacred to people. We deliver exactly what we promote—‘note for note, cut for cut’ accuracy.” It’s this type of accountability that works for the series.
FROM FOUNDER AND MUSIC DIRECTOR, CRAIG MARTIN: Just the name Abbey Road makes you think of another time, a time when music mattered. These days, new music doesn’t survive, it’s gone by lunch. Abbey Road saw the Beatles let go, it was their swan song album. They wanted to make something that would last and leave their legacy with grace and cool. No other album picks up a full head of steam like Abbey Road. Despite their splitting up, the lads beckon us to “Come Together” right from the onset. With crescendo, they say goodbye with a kiss of philosophy that not only stands the test of time, but tattoos itself onto our hearts: “And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.” They were still young men when they created Abbey Road. We’ve all read about some of the infighting and disagreements. Ten years together within a golden cage of idolatry, you’re bound to have some conflict. And yet they still lent themselves so lovingly to each other’s songs. That defines character. When Classic Albums Live performs Abbey Road, we go deeper than just playing it note for note and cut for cut, we’ve had that part down for years. We go deep. We go into the album and fuse our DNA with it. There’s a beauty that needs to accompany every performance of Abbey Road. I can say without reservation—Classic Albums Live has found that beauty and takes the greatest pride in sharing it with everyone at the show.
Brian Stokes Mitchell Simply Broadway Saturday, October 14 at 8pm
Sponsored by:
Dubbed “the last leading man” by the New York Times, Tony Award-winner Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a career that spans Broadway, television, film, and concert appearances with the country’s finest conductors and orchestras. He received Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards for his star turn in Kiss Me, Kate. He also gave Tony-nominated performances in Man of La Mancha, August Wilson’s King Hedley II, and Ragtime. Other notable Broadway shows include Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jelly’s Last Jam, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and this past Broadway season, Shuffle Along. Off-Broadway includes Do Re Mi, Carnival, Kismet and The Bandwagon at City Center Encores, and Much Ado About Nothing at the Delacorte Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park. Stokes (as he prefers to be called) was born in Seattle, Washington on Halloween. His father, George Mitchell, was a civilian electronics engineer working for the Navy and later the chief radio officer with both Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Exxon. His father was also one of the original “Tuskegee Airman,” having taught radio code at Moton Field, Alabama. His mother, Lillian Mitchell, was an educator. Stokes spent his childhood in Seattle, San Diego, Guam, and the Philippines. He moved back to the United States at the age of 14 and began studying acting, singing, and dancing at San Diego Junior Theatre. Within two years, he was performing on various San Diego stages, including the Old Globe Theatre and San Diego’s Starlight Opera Company. A transfer to Los Angeles with the 12th Night Repertory Company gave him the opportunity to start a long career in television and film. An extremely versatile singer, Stokes has performed at venues all over the country spanning jazz, opera, pops, country, and the musical theater world. He has performed with John Williams, Gustavo Dudamel, Marvin Hamlisch, Keith Lockhart, Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Slatkin, Bobby McFerrin, Dianne Reeves, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Big Band, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and the Muppets. Stokes has made multiple appearances at Carnegie Hall beginning with his debut with the San Francisco Symphony through his televised performance in South Pacific opposite Reba McEntire to his sold-out solo concert, which he continues to perform throughout the U.S. Venues he has appeared at include Disney Hall, Tanglewood, Ravinia, The Hollywood Bowl, Radio City Music Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. He has twice been invited to perform at the White House and has sung for Presidents Clinton and Obama. Stokes has delved deeply into various music disciplines. In addition to singing, he began piano studies at the age of six. His musical curiosity lead him to an interest in orchestration, arranging, and film scoring, which he first
started studying on his own in his late teens. He later studied film scoring, orchestration, and conducting through UCLA and scored and conducted a number of Trapper John, MD episodes, a series on which he was also a regular cast member. His musical talent has extended to the present day as producer, arranger, and orchestrator on his own albums, including his last release, Simply Broadway. Simply Broadway is an album of classic Broadway tunes that have been musically re-imagined but still retain the spirit of the originals. It features the Tony-winning singer accompanied by a solo piano and was released in the fall of 2012. It was recorded in the “oldschool” style, without overdubs or audio separation—Stokes and his pianist, Tedd Firth, were in the same room at the same time as they recorded the tracks. The song selection includes works from Camelot, Porgy and Bess, Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Les Misérables, and other classics. Stokes has appeared on more than 20 albums, his most recent being a recording of “What The World Needs Now” with other members of the Broadway community to help those affected by the tragedy at The Pulse club in Orlando, Florida. He is currently in the studio completing his latest album, Plays With Music, which will be released this Fall. His extensive screen credits began with a guest starring role on Roots: The Next Generations which led to a seven-year stint on Trapper John, MD. His 40-year long TV/film run continued with memorable appearances on everything from PBS’ Great Performances to Frasier, The Prince of Egypt (singing “Through Heaven’s Eyes”), Glee, Jumping the Broom, Madam Secretary, and The Blacklist. For the past two seasons he has recurring roles on Mr. Robot and Hulu’s The Path. As a voice-over artist, he has portrayed dozens of characters on animated TV episodes. NPR aired his narration of Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait with the U.S. Marine Band. His second performance at the White House, A Celebration of American Creativity, was aired this year on PBS. As a writer, Stokes has contributed to the book Hirschfeld’s Harlem, wrote the preface to At This Theatre, and co-authored the children’s book Lights on Broadway. Stokes has received a number of awards for both his charitable and artistic work, including the New Dramatist’s Distinguished Achievement Award, the Actors Fund Julie Harris Award, Canada’s Dora Mavor Moore Award (the Canadian “Tony”), and the Americans for the Arts Outstanding Contribution to the Arts Award. In 1998, he joined the likes of Helen Hayes, Sir John Gielgud, Alec Guinness, and James Earl Jones when he became the sole recipient of the Distinguished Performance Award from the Drama League, the nation’s oldest theatrical honor, for his performance in Ragtime. In November of 2016, he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.
Stokes is a great proponent of arts education and speaks passionately about the importance of art in all of our lives. Last year, he was the entertainment host at the first night of Lincoln Center’s Global Exchange and is a member of Americans for the Arts, a non-partisan arts lobbying organization. He has enjoyed working with numerous other charitable organizations from the March of Dimes to the USO. Stokes has been the Chairman of the Board of the Actors Fund for the last 13 years and this year received the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his work with that organization. For fun, he has been known to fly planes and jump out of them (usually not at the same time), and he can ride a bicycle on a high wire. He resides in New York City with his wife, son, and rescued mutt. For more information go to brianstokes.com. Twitter: @bstokesmitchell Facebook: Brian Stokes Mitchell Mark Hummel - The Music Director/Conductor/Dance Music Arranger for Disney’s Newsies, also wrote arrangements for Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway and dance music for Sister Act (Broadway and worldwide). As Music Director for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, Mr. Hummel composed three songs for their 75th celebration in 2007. LOVE LETTERS NOVEMBER 9 - NOVEMBER 19
Two actors, one stage, and a love story spanning fifty years. Set in an intimate setting with simple staging, Love Letters takes you on a journey of every emotion from joy to sorrow. Andrew Makepeace Ladd III wrote his first letter to Melissa Gardner to tell her she looked like a lost princess. They were both seven years old. For the next fifty years, through personal triumphs and despair, through wars and marriages and children and careers, they poured out the secrets of their hearts to each other. They defied a fate that schemed to keep them apart, and lived—through letters—for the one most meaningful thing, their undying love for each other. Written by A.R. Gurney (Sylvia, The Dining Room), Love Letters is a tender, funny, and nuanced examination of the shared nostalgia, missed opportunities, and deep closeness of two lifelong, complicated friends.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS And we invite you into our home this season! We’ve got plenty of offerings for every taste, from nostalgia to choral music to Celtic sounds to a country favorite, so you won’t want to miss celebrating the holidays here at the Arts Center. We start with Home for the Holidays, an exciting and heartwarming variety show that’s back by popular demand. We produced the popular production for three years, and then decided to offer other holiday-themed theatrical productions for the past two years. During that time, though, we heard you loud and clear: you missed Home for the Holidays. Produced in association with Chris Starkey, this year’s remount is directed by Kenny Moten, whom you’ve seen in prior productions of Home for the Holidays, as well as The Motones and Motones vs. Jerseys. Kenny has teamed up with choreographer Tara Cluck and musical director Trent Hines to refresh the production, replete with dancers, singers,

drummers, holiday songs, and of course, a celebrity appearance from you know who! This year’s theme is holidays through the years, so you’re sure to hear your favorite holiday songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s up through today. Don’t miss this joyous celebration of the season! If you’re looking for more of a particular type of holiday music, you’re also in luck. Last year’s performance of holiday choral music by Kantorei sold out—so we’re bringing them back for more. It’s been a year and a half since Cherish the Ladies were at the Arts Center, and since everyone loved them so much, we wanted to showcase them with a special Christmas performance. And… what would Christmas be without everyone’s favorite cowboy, Michael Martin Murphey? The lights will shine bright at the Lone Tree Arts Center this holiday season. We hope you’ll include us in your holiday plans!

HENRY AWARDS
28
The Lone Tree Arts Center was honored at the 11th Annual Colorado Theatre Guild’s Henry Awards on Monday, July 17 at the PACE Center. The awards, named after Denver cultural icon Henry Lowenstein, are given in a variety of categories each year to call out excellence in Colorado theatre.
EVITA brought us three Henrys. First, our very own Jen Kiser won the Henry Award for Outstanding Lighting Design Tier 2. The musical director for EVITA, Max Mamon, won the Henry for Outstanding Musical Direction. And the production of EVITA itself won the award for Outstanding Production of a Musical.
Early in the summer, the Arts Center was nominated for 13 awards, which is incredible given that we have only been producing our own theatrical shows for four years. This year, productions of Muscle Shoals: I’ll Take You There and EVITA, were nominated in lighting, musical direction, acting, direction of a musical theater production, and outstanding production categories. Several categories had nominations for both productions! The Arts Center itself was also nominated for Best Theatre Season.
We’re proud to be honored through the Henrys, and we want to thank you, our patrons, for helping us make remarkable programming happen!

Going out, yes. Going out of style, never. While a lot of things change over the years, some things don’t. And getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop doing what you love. So we encourage our residents to keep on doing their thing while we take care of the rest.
