A more natural approach to new urbanism.

New urbanism doesn’t always mean lots of concrete and no backyards. At RidgeGate, it means walkable shopping, dining, and cultural venues. Plus over 1,000 acres dedicated to preserved natural open space. Three new neighborhoods are coming to life with a variety of home options. Naturally, we’d love for you to come visit. RidgeGate is just south of Lincoln Avenue in Lone Tree.

A word from

MAYOR JIM GUNNING I’m a numbers guy. I like the black-and-white of how investments return and knowing specifically what aspects led to a success or a failure. In the arts, I’ve learned there is a lot of gray. Performances are so subjective that one audience member may have a completely different reaction than the person next to him or her. Since the opening of the Arts Center, I’ve been in more “gray” than ever before. But, there are still numbers – and those are numbers we’re quite proud of. By the time this letter is read, the Arts Center will have hit a milestone that we were all thrilled to celebrate. After only two years of operation, we are nearing $2 million in ticket sales. We’ve seen over 100,000 people walk through our doors, and we’ve sold out dozens of performances. This rapid success is a testament to the people of Lone Tree. They saw the opportunity, voted to support the building of the Arts Center, and now continue to cultivate success by attending plays, concerts, events, and meetings. Throughout all of this, a particular statistic has stuck with me - 52% of the Arts Center patrons come from outside of Douglas County. I am proud that the foresight of Lone Tree voters made this valuable addition to our community possible. We truly have become a destination for arts and culture not only in our own backyard, but throughout the area. Enjoy the show and tell your friends! We are building something great here. Mayor Jim Gunning

A word from

ExEcUtIvE DIREctOR LIsA RIGsbY PEtERsON Earlier this year, Denver Post critic Ray Mark Rinaldi wrote “The Lone Tree Arts Center has done much in its brief, two-year history to move the geographic center of Front Range entertainment a few miles south of the City of Denver.” We are justifiably proud of this endorsement from one of the region’s leading arts critics. The 2013-14 season underscores our intention to bring you the best touring and regional entertainment, carefully chosen with our audience members in mind. We are excited about our continued artistic growth, measured not only in ticket sales and attendance figures, but also in your responses. While we continue to grow, there is one aspect of the Arts Center that we hope remains the same: our unwavering commitment to listening to you. Many of you have been on the receiving end of our requests for feedback – in fact, we received nearly 800 responses to our early 2013 survey asking for your opinions about programming, comfort in our facility, and warmth and helpfulness of our employees. When we recently encountered a string of rotten weather luck during our Tunes on the Terrace concert series, we surveyed you to find out which part of the experience was most important so that we can better make adjustments in the future. You don’t need to wait to be asked to give your feedback, by the way – you can always email your thoughts to boxoffice@cityoflonetree.com and we will be sure to receive your message. Be assured that we read all comments and, as a staff, discuss how we can do things better. One example of how we listen and respond can be found in our programming this year. We had great a response to our Arts in the Afternoon series, so we have expanded the program to be held monthly. Our Seedlings programs, for children aged 1 – 4, are selling out every month so we added additional performances. These programs, in addition the diverse range of main stage programming awaiting you over the next 8 months, are designed to bring excellent, moving, uplifting, thoughtful, and just plain fun to you. We look forward to seeing you in the audience, and hearing from you when you’d like to share! Lisa Rigsby Peterson

COMPANY BIOGRAPHY Handsome Little Devils Productions specializes in original, American comedy and storytelling, with an emphasis in Vaudeville-style routines and visually-stimulating contraptions incorporated into gorgeous production design. HLD Productions began with two brothers busking on the streets of Ft. Collins, CO. In 2010, the company made its off-Broadway debut at the New Victory Theater with a production of The Squirm Burpee Circus. OUR MISSION • To preserve American History through original, new theatre works that employ classic Vaudeville comedy, American storytelling traditions and vintage art forms. • To make people LAUGH. • To inspire BRAVERY amongst our performers and our audience. • To produce works that REDEFINE the theatrical experience and build a NEW audience. • To create opportunities for JOY and the abandonment of stress through LAUGHTER and IMAGINATION. • To bring families together and bridge the generation gap through comedy and storytelling. • To bring unique artistic performances and meaningful educational outreach programs to all communities–including underserved communities with limited access to the arts! With special thanks to Playhouse Square for their support in the development of this work.

Coy Middlebrook (Director) While still in high school, Coy became a choreographer and assistant director for the Theatre Arts Department at California State University-Chico (CSUC). He is an alum of The Lincoln Center Directors Lab and a member of The Actors Studio where his directing credits include RACE MUSIC and WOODEN NICKELS. Mike Huling (Artistic Director/Mike the Handsome) Mike started his performing career at the ripe age of 4, when he starred in a family talent show blowing bubbles. Receiving mixed reviews on his bubble talents, he continued the journey to find his true passion. With big brother Dan at his side, Mike honed his skills as a sculptor and printmaker at Colorado State University until the brothers decided to go into Vaudeville. Performing in over 12 different countries, the Huling brothers were a smash hit all the way to The Tonight Show, where they performed their famous Ballet of the Flame-Throwing Pogo Sticks! In 2007, Mike became the Artistic Director of the company. Following successful national tours of Squirm Burpee in 2008 and 2009, Handsome Little Devils Productions was able to make their off-

Broadway debut at the New Victory Theater in 2010! When he’s not performing or building props and sets for the company, Mike works as a designer and freelance artist in his hometown of Denver, Colorado. Cole Huling (Artistic Manager/Head Writer) Cole has been with the Handsome Little Devils since 2006, when she originated the role of the Lovely Little Lolo. She began her career in the theatre in the 2nd grade and has worn many hats both on and off-stage since. Cole graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2005 with a BFA in playwriting, and she has been the head writer for the collaborative scripting of Squirm Burpee since 2006. In 2011, Cole stepped out of the role of Lolo to devote more time to development and writing new works. In addition to her work with the Handsome Little Devils, Cole volunteers her time with Magic Moments, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to raising money and providing performance opportunities for professional, novice and special-needs actors in Colorado. She is the creator of the Handsome Little Devils educational-outreach program and continues to develop new and exciting ways to influence and inspire young people through theatre arts. Jimmy Slonina (The Baron Vegan Von Hamburger) Jimmy most recently starred as the White Clown in Cirque du Soleil’s “O” at the Bellagio on the Las Vegas Strip. Prior to that, he toured North America as a lead clown in Cirque’s KOOZÅ, directed by David Shiner. He also created characters for and performed in Franco Dragone’s Vegas aquatic spectacle, Le Rêve. He is the founder of the film and theatrical production company LionHeart Theatrics, for which he has directed and produced several music and promotional videos, as well as staging and starring in Samuel Beckett’s Act Without Words I & II for Las Vegas’ annual Beckett Festival. Originally from Chicago, Jimmy enjoyed many years as a critically-acclaimed actor in a broad variety of physical, contemporary, and classical theaters. He has worked intimately with many world-renowned, award-winning Chicago theatre companies, including Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Redmoon Theater, and Defiant Theatrew. He is also the recipient of two Joseph Jefferson Awards for acting. “This wonderful performer,” the Chicago Tribune raved, “gives as distinctive a performance

as any this year.” The Chicago Sun-Times described him as “an exceptional physical clown.” And the Las Vegas Review-Journal praised his solo show, “Slonina has the precision and control of a master mime, but he also has an actor’s sensibility... I can’t imagine anyone not having a good time.” Dave Clay (Dashing Dave) Bringing home his love for entertaining after several years of living in Europe, Dave Clay has performed in theaters and festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest and across the United States. He entertains with an adept passion built on quick wit and outstanding stunts that have brought him success from the comedy clubs of San Francisco to the International Jugglers Association stage. He has toured nationally with March Fourth Marching Band, juggled at the Kennedy Center and performed alongside the Oregon Symphony. Dave has recently completed his second trip to Haiti with Clowns Without Borders and looks forward to his continued work with them! Dave is proud to join the ranks of the Handsome Little Devils and wants to continue spreading joy through humor and Vaudeville as long as he can. Lara Chamberlain (The Lovely Little Lolo) Lara joins us from NYC, where she is currently a featured dancer in the nationally-touring company of Cirque Le Masque Productions. Prior to joining the circus, Lara has been a vocalist and dancer for PGT Entertainment/ Princess Cruises and has played principal roles in award-winning musicals like Singing in the Rain and Sweet Charity. She has worked with the Boulder Ballet, David Taylor Dance company and Frequent Flyers Productions, and has recorded multiple vocal tracks for Pioneer Drama Service. She holds a B.S. in Integrative Physiology from the University of Colorado, and when she’s not touring with the circus, she is a sought-after Pilates instructor at Sanctuary Pilates and Wellness in NYC! In addition to her New York work life, Lara is a member and lead vocalist in the 1940s-style vocal quartet, Pink Champagne, with Cole Huling!

Arts in the Afternoon provides mid-day concerts at an affordable price. The concerts are all performed by small groups of professional musicians and feature a variety of genres throughout the season. Arts in the Afternoon, presented on the second Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm, includes everything from jazz and bluegrass to classical and opera. Last year, LTAC tried its hand at mid-day programming with two series specifically focused on chamber music and jazz for daytime offerings. The response was fantastic, growing from a couple of dozen audience members to a couple of hundred by the end of the season. This year, we decided to up the ante! Lisa Rigsby Peterson, Executive Director of LTAC, said, “We heard from so many of last year’s attendees that they enjoy having an affordable option to experience art while the sun is still up. There is a real need for quality programs that are accessible in many ways for our aging population. The huge growth in attendance last season proved that Arts in the Afternoon is a terrific addition to our community, and we’re proud to expand it this year.” The performers are varied, but all seem agreed on one point – they love performing for this group of patrons! Stephanie Bettman of the bluegrass/folk duo Bettman & Halpin said, “We are looking forward to returning to the Lone Tree Arts Center. LTAC is one of our favorite venues - everyone there is welcoming and supportive. It’s the perfect place to be sharing our Songs and Stories from the Road. The audiences at LTAC are great, and truly appreciate the uniqueness and intimacy of our songwriting - and yet they’re totally willing to laugh with us too! Can’t wait!” Bettman & Halpin perform November 6. Phillip Stevens, a member of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and professor at Metro State University, is a regular performer at LTAC. Last year, Stevens performed numerous times as a chamber musician and he looks forward to returning with some interesting twists. In February, Alex Kommodore joins Stevens to present a different side of chamber music – the guitar. Stevens said, “To show just what the guitar can do, Alex is also planning to present a short set of virtuosic guitar works that he will have just taken on tour to Scotland. I’m really looking forward to this concert because it will be such a new and rewarding chamber music experience for me, not to mention for much of our audience.” This Guitars & Strings concert will take place February 19. If you enjoy the more traditional side of chamber music, there are certainly offerings for you as well. The October 9 concert titled International Masterworks for Violin & Piano will not disappoint. LTAC favorite, Elizabeth McKenna Greenberg joins up with Kelly Zuercher to present this dazzling afternoon of top composers from Brahms to Chopin. “The violin and piano literature is so rich and colorful, that the hardest part of our job in programing will be picking among so many beautiful works. Our goal in this concert is to present a cross section of composers from the baroque, classical and romantic repertoire… It is always a pleasure for performers and audience to share the stage in such an excellent, unamplified acoustic space and in an intimate and educational setting,” remarked Greenberg. We hope you’ll join us for this fantastic series!

Over 300 cultural institutions in the Denver metro area receive support and funding via the SCFD. This creates a rich, robust landscape of cultural opportunities for our children and our neighbors. From a child on a field trip seeing a woolly mammoth to a grandfather showing his family what his aircraft looked like in WWII to a family celebrating the holidays together with live entertainment, the SCFD helps make the memories we cherish possible. One penny on every $10 purchase within the seven-county region (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties) is distributed via the SCFD. Since its inception in 1989, the SCFD has served a mission that enlightens and entertains the public. Annually distributing approximately $40 million, the Denver metro has been elevated to a worldclass cultural center through the funding the SCFD provides to cultural organizations of all sizes and disciplines.
