Director’s Notes – The Glass Menagerie
Below is an excerpt from Bryce Alexander’s director notes. For the full director’s notes, please visit lonetreeartscenter.org.
Chicago, 1944: The Glass Menagerie opened. Perhaps it was his poetic, profound, and imaginative depiction of Williams’ own life, but The Glass Menagerie earned the New York Drama Critics Circle Award only a year later when it moved to Broadway. Williams would go on to be one of the most celebrated American playwrights of all time, and The Glass Menagerie would remain one of his most respected works. While Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof have also garnered nearly unrivaled popularity, The Glass Menagerie demonstrates the birth of Williams’ dramatic style. Williams was inspired to choose elements that had meaning, deeper symbolism, and the potential for great intrinsic value over realistic details. Even the opening monologue of the play comments on the productions “dim” lighting and “sentimental” music. The play, he says, is “not realistic.” Coffee cups and tangible dinners are omitted, indicated only by the actors’ movements, while candles and – of course – the glass elements of the menagerie exist in literal, tangible structures that have deeper meaning. The Glass Menagerie is not just Laura’s obsession, it is a representation of her being. Likewise, Williams’ screen devices are not for scenic value or to indicate time or place, but to “strengthen the allusions in the writing.”
The Glass Menagerie is regarded as one of the greatest American plays of all time – not simply because it is a moving tragedy about times gone by, but because of its groundbreaking theatrical concept, extraordinary use of language, and breathtaking story. These incredible components come together with astounding resonance when presented with the truth in humanity that accompanies every Phamaly production. Never has Williams’ opening monologue been more true: Phamaly gives you “truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.”
The actress you see on-stage before you playing Laura is not pretending to have a disability; is not walking like she assumes a disabled person would walk. Instead, she is presenting to you – in unmatched truth – her actual walk, her genuine body. Her character is only an illusion. The actress you see on-stage before you playing Amanda is a mother. She cares for her son as all mothers do, and loves him unconditionally – wanting only the best for him. Living with her disability, she can remember the day when she didn’t wake up in pain; when the stigma of being overweight didn’t come shooting into her from the eyes of strangers. They don’t know it’s part of her condition. These are her truths. Her character is only an illusion. The actor you see on-stage before you playing Jim can recall younger days when he was a high school authority; the days before his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder convinced him to drop out of school a month before his graduation. While it’s true his “pace has slowed,” he certainly isn’t discouraged. His character is only an illusion. Finally, the actor you see on-stage before you playing Tom has always wondered why his hearing impairment has had to prevent him from a full time performance career in theatres small and large. He dreams of being able to burst out of the limitations placed upon him by the world around him. He too, has wrestled with conflict between the true needs and desires of his family and himself. His character is only an illusion.
The Glass Menagerie is not the story of any hero or villain, but of individuals who must walk their own paths – right or wrong - not by choice but by necessity, by circumstance, and even by the impenetrable influences within us all. The characters in the play must walk their own paths, but when coupled with Phamaly’s performers –
who navigate the path of disability everyday – the play takes on an even greater and pervasive significance. The genius behind Williams’ classic, in my opinion, lies in the ability to connect our own lives to the ones being presented on-stage. Just as the characters reflect on their paths, and our performers reflect on theirs, the story begs us to reflect, to ask ourselves ‘what is the significance, the beauty, the complexity, and the merit of our
own paths in life? How are we like them?’ Whether living with disabilities, financial hardships, or broken hearts – we have all had to walk the path of being human, of being “true” to ourselves. Maybe we can all use a little reflection, a little comparison, a little empathy; and in the end, being human – and having the opportunity to walk our paths – may not be such a bad thing.
Jenna Bainbridge, Laura, has been working with Phamaly since 2006’s The Wiz. Since then she has performed such roles as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Daisy in Sideshow, and Little Sally in Urinetown. Her “Phamaly” has given her the skills and knowledge to go on to work with other companies across Colorado including Colorado Shakespeare Festival and Boulder’s Dinner Theatre. Disability: Spinal Cord Injury. www.spinalcord.org. Ashley Kelashian, Amanda, has been seen in past Phamaly performances Fiddler on the Roof (Yente), It’s a Wonderful Life (Ma Bailey), The Velveteen Rabbit (Boat), Little Shop of Horrors (Mrs. Luce) and Vox Phamilia. Disabilities: Dercum’s Disease and degenerative disc disease. www.lipomadoc.org/ dercums-disease.html Eric Richerson, Jim, is performing in his second show with Phamaly. His first show with the company was It’s a Wonderful Life as Sam Wainwright and multiple ensemble roles. Eric has played such roles as Joe Keller in All My Sons, Orin in Little Shop of Horrors, and Rosencrantz in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at other venues. Disabilities: Primarily Obsessional OCD, Trichotillomania, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Psoriasis. www.mhcd. org.

You may recognize him from such past productions as Little Shop of Horrors (Seymour), The Foreigner (Ellard), The Elephant Man (John Merrick), and Beauty and the Beast (Lumiere). Disabilities: Hearing impaired, hip dysplasia. Bryce Russell Alexander, Director, holds a BFA Cum Laude in Theatre Performance and a BA in English Literature from the University of Colorado. He is a member of the Society of American Fight Directors, and is an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers union. Stephen D. Mazzeno, Lighting Designer, is the Master Electrician of the Space Theatre for the Denver Center Theatre Company as well as a member of I.A.T.S.E. Yumi Hwang-Williams made her debut at the age of fifteen as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, six years after having emigrated from South Korea. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, her exceptional musicianship has earned her a reputation as an artist who, in addition to her thoughtful and stylish interpretations of the classics, is known for her commitment to exploring and performing the works of contemporary composers. Featured in a Strings magazine cover article in 2008, she was described as a ‘Modern Prometheus’ who has ‘emerged as a fiery champion of contemporary classical music’. Her interpretations of works by Aaron Jay Kernis, Michael Daugherty and Christopher Rouse have earned unreserved approval from the composers as well as critical acclaim. She has performed Korean composer Isang Yun’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, Switzerland under the baton of Dennis Russell Davies who immediately invited her to play the concerto again with the Bruckner Orchester, in Linz, Austria in October 2009. She has also been the soloist in Thomas Adès’ violin concerto, Concentric Paths, at the Cabrillo Festival in Santa Cruz with Marin Alsop on the podium. Ms. Hwang-Williams has performed with the symphony orchestras of Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Santa Rosa with conductors Paavo Jarvi, Lawrence Leighton Smith and Jeffrey Kahane, and has made numerous solo appearances with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO) under the batons of Marin Alsop, Peter Oundjian, Douglas Boyd, Hans Graf and Christian Arming to name a few. In recent seasons she was soloist in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, in the Sibelius violin concerto with the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra and in the Bernstein Serenade with the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. Yumi is an avid chamber musician and recitalist, having collaborated with such artists such as Gary Graffman, Ida Kavafian, Christopher O’Riley, John Kimura Parker, Robert Koenig, Dror Biran, and with Dennis Russell Davies, performing Lou Harrison’s Grand Duo for violin and piano. She was a founding member of the piano trio Tre Voce which made its Weil Hall debut in 2006. Yumi Hwang-Williams has served as Concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra since 2000. She is also Concertmaster of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, has performed as Guest Concertmaster for the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Ottawa, at the invitation of Music Director Pinchas Zukerman, and has been Guest First Violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She is a faculty member of the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver.
Claude Sim has been with the Colorado Symphony since 1999. He frequently performs as soloist with the orchestra. He previously held a principal position with the Baltimore Symphony, and has been guest Concertmaster of the Kansas City Symphony. Other affiliations include the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra. As a chamber musician, he has concertized as guest first violinist of the critically acclaimed Miró String Quartet, and as violist with the Grammy award winning Pacifica Quartet. He has also collaborated with members of the Tokyo and Vermeer String Quartets, and with noted pianists including Jeffrey Kahane and Christopher O’Riley. Known for his stylistic versatility, Claude has recorded a studio album of jazz standards from the American Songbook. claudesim.com About the Colorado Symphony The region’s only full-time professional orchestra, the Colorado Symphony embraces a tradition of musical excellence by presenting a diverse array of symphonic performances throughout the year.
