THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE
August Wilson’s
AUGUST WILSON’S FENCES In April, LTAC is honored to be bringing August Wilson’s Fences to our Main Stage for a three week run from April 5—21, with a preview night on April 4. This show is a particularly exciting venture for the Arts Center, considering the rigorous vetting process from the August Wilson Estate that we had to go through to get the rights to perform the show. We are committed to bringing remarkable programming to our patrons and this show definitely fits the bill. A part of August Wilson’s ten play “American Century Cycle,” Fences takes place in the 1950s and follows Troy, a man haunted by his past and struggling to provide for his family. The cast of characters is small, but all of them are fully realized, multi-dimensional characters. It’s a rich, complex play and demands the best from the cast and creative team involved. Leading our production is Wren T. Brown in his Arts Center theatrical directorial debut. Wren is an actor, producer, and the founder of the Ebony Repertory Theatre in Los Angeles. Wren connected with LTAC via Harvy Blanks, who was last seen at the Arts Center in Big River, and is a fixture of the Denver theater scene. Harvy recently starred in August Wilson’s Jitney on Broadway. Harvy and Wren were connected by the late Israel Hicks, the first director to direct all ten of the plays in the

“American Century Cycle” for one theater company (Denver Center Theatre Company). There’s clearly something about August Wilson’s writing that keeps bringing these talented artists together. When asked about what draws him to Fences, Wren said, “The beauty of the writing, the authentic and very human characters, and the profoundly universal themes.” Even though the production may seem far away, Wren already knows what he wants our audience to take away from the performance: the importance of seeing other human beings as whole and the vital importance of effective communication. Here at LTAC, we not only want to bring you remarkable programming, but we also want to bring you relevant programming. This is a show that will stay with you long after you’ve left our theater. And while the 1950s might seem like the distant past and Troy Maxson’s story may not be your story, Wren wants this production to stress, for artists and audience alike, that “the culturally specific is not separated from the commonality of humanity.”

Michael Martin Murphey: A Cowboy Christmas Friday, December 22 at 8pm Saturday, December 23 at 1:30pm In the early 1970s, Rolling Stone called Michael Martin Murphey “one of the best songwriters in America.” Since that time, Murphey has left an indelible mark on the American music landscape, crafting and recording such iconic hits as “Wildfire,” “Carolina In The Pines,” “Geronimo’s Cadillac,” “Cowboy Logic,” “Cherokee Fiddle,” “Boy From The Country,” and more. In the process, he has topped the Pop, Country, Bluegrass, and Western Music charts, earned six gold albums, and received multiple Grammy nominations. Through all the chart-jumping and genre-busting, Murphey has remained constant to an honest, sophisticated approach to his songwriting. In fact, it’s simply impossible to pigeonhole Murphey to one specific genre. He is no more country than rock, no more bluegrass than classical. He is, rather, a true American songwriter. A native Texan, Murphey’s songs have always reflected his lifestyle, and are understandably seen through a Western lens, often built on outdoor themes with the sensibilities of his cowboy lifestyle. At the core of his music is a stubborn determination to be the best songwriter he can be, a focus that has led to his songs being covered by such artists as Lyle Lovett, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Hoyt Axton, Cher, Manfred Mann, The Monkees, and more. “I spend a lot of time on the road listening to all kinds of music,” he says. “I grew up in Texas, the world’s number one musical crossroads where anything goes musically. Texas has produced great artists from every genre.” “You can wake up and say ‘today, I think I’ll write a symphony’ and you can find an audience for it there. The same can be said about any genre in music. Texans love music. They enjoy opera and they enjoy bluegrass. I am a product of that, and I am the Number One fan of all types of music.” It is an approach that has worked well for Murphey. According to BMI, Murphey has 5 million performance song radio plays — “Wildfire” (over 4 million), “Cherokee Fiddle” (over 2 million), “Carolina In The Pines” (1.5 million), “Talking To The Wrong Man” (1 million), “Still Takin’ Chances” (1 million)—and a total of 11 award-winning BMI songs (six in Country and five in Pop). Also, according to BMI, repeat, back-to-back performances of his award-winning songs alone, with each song averaging three minutes each, would amount to 64 years of continuous airplay. Sponsored by:

Viva Las Vegas: Elvis Night
Thursday, December 28 at 7pm Lucky Jackson (Elvis) goes to Las Vegas, Nevada to participate in the city’s first annual Grand Prix Race. However, his race car, an Elva Mk. VI, is in need of a new engine in order to compete in the event. Lucky raises the necessary money in Las Vegas, but he loses it when he is shoved into the pool by the hotel’s nubile swimming instructor, Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). Lucky then has to work as a waiter at the hotel to replace the lost money to pay his hotel bill, as well as enter the hotel’s talent contest in hopes of winning a cash prize sizable enough to pay for his car’s engine. During all this time, Lucky attempts to win the affections of Rusty. His main competition arrives in the form of Count Elmo Mancini (Cesare Danova), who attempts to win both the Grand Prix and the affections of Rusty. Rusty soon falls in love with Lucky, and immediately tries to change him into what she wants. Join us in the lobby after the movie for a Las Vegas cocktail night, complete with appetizers, casino games, karaoke, and an Elvis costume contest, judged by the man himself!

The Good Humor Men Friday, December 29 at 8pm Pat Hazell: Showtime declared Pat Hazell one of the five funniest people in America. His 30 years of experience as a writer, producer, and director have made him a go-to guy for new American theater. Pat is one of the original writers for NBC’s Seinfeld, a veteran of The Tonight Show, a critically acclaimed playwright, and a contributing commentator to National Public Radio. He is recognized for his genuinely funny Americana humor and his salute to nostalgia. As a playwright, Pat’s first endeavor, Bunk Bed Brothers, was optioned by Columbia Pictures, then gained the attention of the TV industry and was filmed as the sitcom American Pie for NBC. Hazell’s signature work, The Wonder Bread Years, a grand salute to the babyboomer generation, aired on PBS, where they referred to Hazell as “America’s foremost pop culture anthropologist.” Currently, the live theatrical tour of The Wonder Bread Years is enjoying success across the U.S. As the Chief Creative Officer of Sweetwood Creative, he is responsible for the national tours of four original productions: Bunk Bed Brothers, The Wonder Bread Years, The Good Humor Men, and A Kodachrome Christmas. Pat is currently in development on a musical adaptation of his original play, Grounded For Life. However, his greatest accomplishment is being the father of two of the brightest shining stars in the universe, Tucker and Keaton. For more information on Pat or tour dates please visit SweetwoodIsCreative.com and wonderbreadyears.com.

Pat McGann: In 2007, Pat McGann transitioned from packaging salesmen to stand up comedian. Soon after taking the stage Pat was booked to be House MC at the historic Zanies Comedy Club. Hosting shows helped Pat develop the ability and desire to work any crowd. In 2010, Pat created and hosted the Emmy nominated television show The Chicago Stand Up Project. Pat has been invited to The Great American Comedy Festival and Laugh Fest. In 2013, Pat performed and presented at the Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards. He was also asked by the Chicago White Sox to write and direct a comedy show with their players. The show, Wild Pitches, was “a home run!” (Their pun, not mine.) Pat developed a special segment for the highly rated Chicago Countdown New Year’s Eve Special 2013 on ABC. He was also asked to help Giordano’s Pizza respond to Jon Stewart and The Daily Show’s assault on Chicago pizza, resulting in a quick appearance on The Daily Show. When not traveling the country working comedy clubs or corporate gigs, Pat appears regularly on Sports Talk Live (Comcast), Windy City Live (ABC), Mancow (WLUP), Good Day Chicago (Fox), WGN Morning News, WGN-Radio, and ESPN Radio. Pete Lee might be the nicest person in New York City, but that’s because it’s impossible to sound aggressive with a Wisconsin accent. Pete was raised in Janesville, WI by divorced parents and a 19-inch television, which probably explains why he pursued a career in entertainment. In 2005, Pete flew to New York to make his television debut on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, and the taping went so well that he decided to move to NYC. Soon after, he was selected to perform at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, where he was voted a standout performer. In 2008, Pete made his network television debut performing on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, finishing as a semi-finalist. That same year, he made his television acting debut on the CBS soap opera As The World Turns, lasting two episodes! At the end of 2008, he shot his own Comedy Central The Half Hour special, which earned him a cult following at comedy clubs, and the opportunity to perform over the next five years at 500 colleges across the country. In 2010, Pete began producing and editing his own shows for the Internet, which led to getting his own web show on MSN.com called New York Minute:30. His web shows attracted the attention of television talent scouts and in 2012 he was hired to be a writer and cast member on FUSE TV’s Video on Trial and the NFL Network’s Top 10’s. In 2013, Pete was hired on VH1’s Best Week Ever, where he was a writer and cast member for three seasons. That same year, he made his late night television debut on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. Currently, Pete hosts his own segment on Nickelodeon’s Nick Toons, in coordination with the NFL, called NFL Rush. If you haven’t heard of Pete Lee yet, prepare to tell other people.

A Breakthrough in Audience-Sourced Storytelling
POSTSECRET: THE SHOW Everyone has secrets, and sometimes it’s hard to keep them in. But we’re embarrassed to tell them to our spouses, our friends, or other loved ones. What to do? Send them to PostSecret. PostSecret started as a blog 12 years ago. Its founder, Frank Warren, asked anyone who’d listen to send him a postcard with a true secret that they haven’t told anyone. Over a million people sent him postcards. He put them on his blog, which has grown to be the largest ad-free blog in the world at almost 800 million visitors. People visit every Sunday, when ten new secrets are posted. This online community has inspired people, created dialogue about difficult topics, and has helped people see that their life experiences are shared by others. It’s become so popular that in addition to being printed in six books, some of the postcards Warren received are now showcased at a Smithsonian exhibit.

So what could a live show of this phenomenon look like? Projected images, videos, actors, and a guitarist guide the audience through crowdsourced narratives revealing the true stories behind the secrets. The dramatization of secrets helps connect us to each other, and you’ll see firsthand the effect that speaking secrets out loud has on the entire community. You’ll hear hopeful, shocking, and sometimes painful secrets — including those that the members of the audience submit during the show — revealed in ways that help us all see that indeed, we are not alone.

SENSORY FRIENDLY
Four years ago, we presented our first sensory friendly performance. It was a new idea for the LTAC team, but what a chance to make remarkable arts happen for those with intellectual, developmental, and sensory disabilities. Today, LTAC’s award-winning SF Family Tree program is a model of arts inclusiveness in the Denver area. LTAC leads the way by welcoming children and families with special needs to experience performing arts as they never thought possible. Through SF Family Tree, we offer a season of low-cost family performances, with subtle but important adaptations to pacing, effects, and lighting, for safety and comfort. Relaxed house rules and off-peak show times make our venue easy and inviting.

LONE TREE ARTS CENTER
SF Family Tree expands possibilities for many in our community. For example, our SF usher training teams up special needs young adults with mentor ushers. SF ushers gain experience through volunteer service, not to mention meaningful social connections and a sense of belonging. LTAC is now the go-to resource for artists and other arts venues. Together with our partners in the special needs community, we are well on our way to making Denver the most sensory-friendly community in America! You can join others in making remarkable happen by supporting SF Family Tree through your tax-deductible donation or business sponsorship. Learn more at lonetreeartscenter.org/give-today.

Going out, yes. Going out of style, never. While a lot of things change over the years, some things don’t. And getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop doing what you love. So we encourage our residents to keep on doing their thing while we take care of the rest.
