A more natural approach to new urbanism.
New urbanism doesn’t always mean lots of concrete and no backyards. At RidgeGate, it means walkable shopping, dining, and cultural venues. Plus over 1,000 acres dedicated to preserved natural open space. Three new neighborhoods are coming to life with a variety of home options. Naturally, we’d love for you to come visit. RidgeGate is just south of Lincoln Avenue in Lone Tree.

Spotlight on... Since opening our doors in 2011, the number of tickets sold to senior performances at the Lone Tree Arts Center has nearly quadrupled, making it one of our fastest growing programs at the Arts Center. From weekday matinées of our theatrical shows to our monthly Arts in the Afternoon program, we reach over 3,200 seniors each season, and that number continues to rise. Each year, our daytime offerings specifically designed for the senior community grow as demand increases. Douglas County is home to a rising population of retirees, and we are thrilled to provide professional performances while it’s still light outside! Our Arts in the Afternoon program is a series of weekday afternoon concerts and performances that give our senior community the opportunity to enjoy a variety of styles in an intimate setting. From Beethoven’s Birthday Celebration to 12
LONE TREE ARTS CENTER
SENIORS Colcannon featuring authentic and joyous Irish music, Arts in the Afternoon is designed to transport guests out of the ordinary. Refreshments are provided as part of the ticket fee, and we encourage all to stay after the performance to talk with performers and other concert goers. We also offer a discounted weekday matinee of our theatrical shows such as Home for the Holidays and The 39 Steps. This performance is frequently the first to sell-out for each run and is a ton of fun for those that call themselves “seniors” and those that aren’t quite ready to use that label yet. Wonderbound Saturday, April 25th at 8:00 pm Denver’s premier contemporary ballet company is known for their highly creative performances that blend dance, live music, and lighting into a magical theatrical experience. “What we are best at is telling stories,” explains Artistic Director Garrett Ammon. “The name Wonderbound captures possibility…the idea of taking you on a journey outside your normal reality and into new territory.” 14

Wonderbound. If you dream. If you love. If you wonder. knowledge or background is not necessary to be moved by our work; a sense of adventure is all you need!” Wonderbound’s performances are characterized by collaboration and live music. Successful collaborations with groups ranging from the folksy Paper Bird to the classical Colorado Symphony Orchestra, have brought Wonderbound to a great place creatively. Ammon shared that “these undertakings have produced artistic creations that erase boundaries between mediums, and engage artists and audiences in candid explorations of the human experience.”
JOIN US ON THE ADVENTURE On April 25, the Lone Tree Arts Center invites you to come along for the wild, wonderful ride that is Wonderbound as they collaborate with local folk/rock band Chimney Choir to present a world premiere Boomtown: Tales from the River Valley. For those new to Wonderbound or dance performance in general, Ammon extends a special invitation. “Our shows are very accessible and use theatricality to tell a story that leaves audiences transfixed and transported, taken in by live music, dance and stage artistry. Dance is merely our starting vocabulary, which our talented artists and musicians use as a base to create a fully immersive experience that captures people in the moment. Dance
In Boomtown at LTAC, they will be working with the local folk/rock group Chimney Choir, known for their tight harmonies, creative combinations of instruments and found objects, and genrebending composition. “Chimney Choir are remarkable musicians, immensely creative and fearless,” states Ammon. “For this show, they put it all out there and try new things. We are both doing new work, all from scratch. They are creating an entire soundscape, really symphonic in quality.” Ammon says the way he approaches collaboration with other artists is to start a conversation, learning what they are each interested in and looking for points of intersection. This allows each group to create work that wouldn’t have occurred to either group on their own. “We bring creative minds together and tread into new territory.” “Our inspiration for Boomtown is about community and specifically this community. What is Denver about? What makes this place remarkable and special? We are exploring how Denver has been built on and continues to have booms that catapult the city forward in big ways, but lead to busts as well. We are still creating the show, but it will be great fun, blending modern myth with a bit of tongue in cheek satire.” www.wonderbound.com www.LoneTreeArtsCenter.org

Silliness from Screen to Stage By: Katie Maltais I can admit it now. When my professor assigned us the task of seeing The 39 Steps at the Tricycle Theatre in London in 2006, I was less than thrilled. My response was something like “seriously?” I doubted a play based on a movie based on a novel written in 1915 was going to be up my alley. Then, the professor upped the ante – we had to watch the Alfred Hitchcock movie before we went. Ugh. Always the studious one, I watched the movie with my classmates despite my reservations. Having never seen a Hitchcock film, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I must say, I did not enjoy the film. Now I had even more doubts about going to this play. I reluctantly arrived at the small-ish theater (about half the size of LTAC) the night of the show. And against all odds, I started laughing right away. Midway through the first act, I was laughing so hard I was crying. Looking at how much everyone around me was enjoying themselves, I started to feel silly for ever doubting I would enjoy myself. My classmates and I had a lively discussion in class that week. We had a self-proclaimed Hitchcock aficionado, major “theater geeks”, people that just joined the class to get free tickets to West End shows, and complete theater novices. It was the first show of the semester we all agreed on – we loved 18 1 8

it. All for very different reasons, but all nonetheless. Somehow the quirky, up-tempo show resonated with everyone, regardless of background. That production was given the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and when the show opened in New York the following year, it took the Tony for Best Play as well as three other categories. Since then, the show has been produced around the world and all over the US. It’s been called “what the West End has been waiting for” (The Observer), “a wonderful triumph of theater” (BBC Radio), “hugely entertaining... clever, witty, ingenious” (Sunday Times), and one magazine said “you’d be crackers, old bean, to miss it” (Stour & Avon). When we were looking for a show to add to the 2014-15 season, I was strongly in favor of this choice. The dynamic show is everything you could want in a comedy – fast, quick-witted, and funny. Four actors playing 150 roles may sound like mayhem – and at some points it is – but it is always enjoyable. As someone that once doubted The 39 Steps, I encourage you to join me for this show. Bring some friends. But first, have a movie night. It really does make it just that much funnier.

Notes from Garrett Ammon, Artistic Director Sometimes our hopes are connected to a place, but happiness is really defined by our hearts. Chimney Choir is possibly Denver’s most adventurous folk/rock band, creating genre-bending music and medium-defying performances – a perfect fit for a Wonderbound collaborator. From this dynamic collaboration, we bring you Boomtown a new tale full of daring adventure and featuring over 25 new songs. Join our young hero as he departs his home to chase the girl of his dreams. Upon his arrival in Boomtown, he is sent hurtling through a series of mishaps and chance encounters that ultimately make him question what it was he wanted all along.

Damien Patterson A former member of Ballet Memphis and Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Damien graduated from the Baltimore School for the Arts where he studied under Stephanie Powell and Toni Wilson. He also studied at the Arena Players Youth Theatre and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Damien has performed his choreography at BNC, Ballet Memphis, Morgan State University, Theatre Project, and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History. He has appeared as a guest artist for Towson University, Dance Baltimore! and the Men’s Project at Theatre Project and has traveled and performed in a two man show that is based on the life of Emmett Till. Since joining BNC, Damien has been featured in Garrett Ammon’s For the Love of Pete, Hemlocks and Primroses, Love in the Digital Age and Rock Ballets, as well as Garrett Ammon and Michael J. Henry’s Intersection. He has performed in Alex Ketley’s Kill the Anthem and Maurya Kerr’s Groundling. Danny Ryan Danny Ryan began his creative career as any young man does, bringing life to G.I. Joes, making baseballs out of rags and duct tape, and playing soldier in the forest on summer camping trips. It was the fascination of taking a little bit of magic and imagination to create something from nothing that attracted him to dance. He began his training at the age of fifteen in his hometown of Milwaukee, WI with Rafael Delgado. From that humble beginning, he was able to go on to further his studies at the Joffrey Ballet School with John Magnus, and from there continue on to a professional career. Over the years he has been fortunate to work with some incredible dancers, directors, and choreographers. These
experiences have led him to become a part of Wonderbound. It is with great joy that he is able to join the incredible artists and creative minds of this company. Here’s to wonder, here’s to creativity, here’s to art and here’s to the human experience! Meredith Strathmeyer Meredith trained with Chamberlain School of the Performing Arts and attended summer programs on full scholarship at School of American Ballet, Houston Ballet, Ballet Austin and Pacific Northwest Ballet. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the celebrated Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance and an Outside Field in Comparative Literature. In college, Meredith performed noted roles such as Choleric in Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments and the Lilac Fairy in Sleeping Beauty. Since joining BNC/Wonderbound, Meredith has been nominated for the Princess Grace award and has danced leading roles in Garrett Ammon’s and tomorrow came, Love of My Life, Moulin Rouge, Bang, Bang and An Occasional Dream, as well as world premiere works by Ma Cong, Maurya Kerr, Alex Ketley, Amy Seiwert, and Lauri Stallings. Meredith is a certified Pilates instructor.
Sarah Tallman A native of Colorado, Sarah holds a BA with honors in Dance Performance and Choreography from the University of Northern Colorado. She has participated in the Inside ODC Professional Workshop, Baardar Dance Institute in Oslo, Norway and PerryMansfield Performing Arts School. Sarah has danced with David Taylor Dance Theatre, Kim Robards Dance, Lynn Barr, and Gleich Dances Contemporary Ballet. Off- season, Sarah has been a Principal Artist with Central City Opera performing in Carmen, Seven Deadly Sins and Oklahoma. Since joining Wonderbound, Sarah has danced multiple principal roles in Garrett Ammon’s works, as well as world premieres by Alex Ketley, Maurya Kerr, Amy Seiwert, Mark Godden, Ma Cong, and Lauri Stallings. An accomplished choreographer, she has created several works for Wonderbound including In Between Seams and Intimate Letters. Sarah is honored and excited to begin her 11th season with Wonderbound.
Chimney Choir Chimney Choir’s music combines folk instrumentation, electronic soundscapes, complex vocal harmonies, and swirling textures of rhythm and melody. Their experiential performances often take on a theatrical quality that stretches beyond the music: Storytelling, interactive video, puppetry, role playing, mimes, and ceremonial offerings have all found their way into Chimney Choir shows. Since forming in early 2011, the Denver-based band has toured the country extensively, self-produced four recordings, and collaborated with many artists in the Front Range in mediums including film, sculpture, performance art, and dance. This summer Chimney Choir will go on to write and record a new full-length album.

Jarrod, 2014 Tony Nominee for “Best Performance by an Actor In a Featured Role in a Musical,” is currently starring in the Broadway smash hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Having played Frankie Valli in Broadway’s Jersey Boys for 6 years and 1500 performances, Jarrod continues to gain accolades for his portrayal of iconic songwriter Barry Mann in the Tony- and Grammy-winning Beautiful.
Jarrod’s solo concert show “A Little Help From My Friends” traces the sound of iconic tenors that inspired—and were inspired by—Frankie Valli, from Enrico Caruso, Little Jimmy Scott, Little Richard, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney up to George Michael, Bruno Mars and, of course, Freddie Mercury. The evening includes some of pop and rock’s greatest songs. This spring, his “Friends” concert was filmed by CPTV for airing in 2015. Both a live concert recording of “A Little Help From My Friends” (Broadway Records) as well as a studio album, “Minor Fall, Major Lift”, are available on iTunes and Amazon. Adam Ben-David, Music Director, has been active as an arranger, music director, conductor, and pianist on Broadway for the past 18 years. His credits include The Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys, Spring Awakening, Wicked, High Fidelity, The Light In The Piazza, Bombay Dreams, Aida and Once Upon a Mattress. He is a proud member of the BMI Music Theatre Workshop. Adam is a graduate of the Juilliard School.

Brandenburg Concertos Saturday, May 17, 2015 at 7:30pm Joseph Swensen, conductor/violin BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, BWV 1046, F major BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, BWV 1048, G major Intermission BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, BWV 1049, G major BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, BWV 1050, D major
Bach’s Musical Resume The Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach are a crazily diverse group of chamber music pieces and have long been loved by both musicians and audiences. They are widely regarded as some of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era. In 1721, Bach presented the six distinctive works to the Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg as a job application of sorts. At the time, he was the musical director at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt in Cöthen. He was happy there for four years under Leopold who was passionate about music. However, in 1721, Leopold married the Princess of Anhalt-Bernburg, who disliked music and liked Bach even less; clearly it was time to seek out other opportunities. Sadly, the Margrave of Brandenburg never acknowledged the letter or the six concertos that accompanied it, yet his name became attached to the pieces. These fantastic compositions were sold for a pittance upon the Margrave’s death and remained unknown for several generations until they were published in 1850 in commemoration of the centenary of Bach’s death. Since that time, the Brandenburgs have been widely praised and played. They demonstrate the depth of Bach’s brilliance, highlighting an amazing versatility, using a wide range of instruments and structures. As you listen to four of these works this evening, take note of the variety of the pieces, the different tones, amazing colors and combinations of instruments. Sit back and enjoy this musical “resume” of one of the most brilliant and beloved composers of all time.

Who is...
ROB COSTIGAN
Before we answer the question of who is Rob, we need to ask the question “what is a prop?” A property, or prop as it’s commonly referred to, is anything moveable or portable on a set. Which, yes, can include things like a couch! Most of the time we think of hand props, which an actor carries on and off the stage, but the definition is very broad. And that is where Rob Costigan comes in! As a props designer, Rob collaborates with the director, scenic designer, costume designer, and actors to get just the right piece for each prop. Creating is second nature for Rob, who would go to his dad’s workbench as a child and create something new and different from whatever was laying around. His love for theater grew throughout high school, and he went to college to major in musical theater. Working as an actor for years, Rob has done thirty-two shows at the Arvada Center and was a regular performer at Country Dinner Playhouse. After Country Dinner Playhouse closed its doors in 2007, Rob knew he needed to supplement his income, and wanted to stick close to theater. He took a job creating props for Alter Boyz at Town Hall Arts Center with Nick Sugar and was hooked! Rob loves the thrill of “finding the things people carry with them through life.” He starts each project by reading the script start to finish, 22
LONE TREE ARTS CENTER
then going back through to highlight what is specifically called for. Then, he adds in what will truly make the characters and the scene come to life. “I really want to find an item specifically for that character. What kind of pen would he own?” says Rob. When Rob and his partner Bob Bauer created props for Big River last season, Rob wanted to concentrate on period-specific props. He focused in on things like what Pap’s knife should be and how used it should look. This tedious process of finding or building the exact pieces that complete the picture of who a character is can be very time consuming. While most of his pieces are built or found for the show he is working on, Rob also keeps a collection of interesting finds he picks up at antique stores or flea markets that he thinks just might come in handy for a show down the road. Rob has been seen as an actor in a number of LTAC performances, and his props have run the gamut from giant white vegetables in the children’s show Bunnicula to the zany objects that are made human by the actors in this spring’s The 39 Steps. Whether it’s an object made to stand out or one that humanizes a set to make it look “lived in”, chances are it was careful research and selection that led Rob to choose it.

Nathan Gunn Tuesday, March 10th at 7:30 pm “I love new pieces. They take up a lot of time, but it’s worth it for me. As a musician, I don’t want to be a curator of opera. I want to help create the new ones.” Nathan Gunn, international opera superstar, has managed not only to create new roles throughout his career, but powerfully portray classic, more familiar roles as well. Since bursting onto the opera scene as the winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1994, Nathan has captured the hearts of audiences all over the world. Born and raised in South Bend Indiana, Nathan Gunn began singing publicly at age 8 in church choirs. He sang because of his love for the music, but that wasn’t his only hobby. During his youth he was very active in sports including boxing, karate, and football. He was also asked to audition for several musicals throughout high school because he was the “boy with the pretty voice.” It wasn’t until nearly 10 years later, however, that he ever considered a future in music. Gunn recalled later in life, “My mom’s idea was that I should take voice lessons. Since I liked to sing, she thought I could make money singing at weddings.” It wasn’t until late in high school that he decided to apply to music schools instead of pursuing a career in the armed forces, his original plan. Nathan Gunn decided to follow his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps by attending the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he is now a part-time vocal professor. Fortunately for the rest of the world, he spends much of his remaining time on tour. Today, Gunn is one of the most sought after baritones and has performed with several of the most storied operas including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Theater an der 26

Wien, Teatro Real in Madrid, and more. Also a distinguished concert performer, Mr. Gunn has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Over the last 20 years of his professional career Nathan Gunn has received many accolades and much recognition for his work. He was the recipient of the first annual Beverly Sills Artist Award and was awarded the Pittsburgh Opera Renaissance Award. He is an alumnus of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artists Program and was a winner of the 1994 Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition. His recording of Britten’s Billy Bud with the London Symphony has also earned him a Grammy Award. He was also recognized for his remarkable physique, being named to People magazine’s list of “The Sexiest Men Alive” in 2008 and earning him the nickname among his fans of “barihunk,” although he prefers the term “hunkitone.” Today, Mr. Gunn continues performing and teaching. He is always on the lookout for new works and new roles and continues to support and promote opera throughout the country. He will be making his Colorado debut at the Lone Tree Arts Center on March 10th following his performance as Danilo in the Metropolitan Opera’s The Merry Widow. “Bringing Nathan Gunn to the Arts Center has been a goal of ours since we opened,” says Executive Director Lisa Rigsby Peterson. “His international reputation and tremendous talent make him the perfect artist for our audiences, and I am looking forward to hearing his rich and captivating voice in the intimate setting of our 500 seat theater.”

Theater Trivia Where in the theater can you find a flat? a) The orchestra pit b) The balcony c) It’s part of the scenery
What is a “swing,” in theatrical terms?
d) It’s part of the backstage area
a) A component of the fly system
ANSWER: c) As the name implies, a flat is a piece of scenery with a flat face, which can be painted to look like an interior or exterior wall, a landscape, or anything else a set designer and scenic painter can imagine. The flat is comprised of a low profile frame of wood or metal, and is covered with muslin fabric or lauan wood, which are easily painted.
b) A performer
What does the term “upstage” mean? a) It is a second story on a set b) It references the part of the stage that is farther away from the audience c) When one performer draws attention away from another performer d) When one performer takes over a role from another performer ANSWER: b) and c) Centuries ago, stages were often “raked,” or slanted, so that the end of the stage farthest away from the audience was higher than the front section of the stage closest to the audience. This was done to provide better sightlines—one performer standing behind another was actually higher up, and therefore could still be seen. Even though most stages today are flat, “upstage” is still the direction farther away, and “downstage” is closer to the audience. A performer who is higher up on a raked stage generally draws more focus, 38
so over time, “upstaging” a performer has come to mean doing something to distract from another performer who should be capturing the audiences’ attention.
LONE TREE ARTS CENTER
c) A moving light d) A microphone hanging above the performers ANSWER: b) A swing is a kind of understudy, who often does not have a role in a production, and does not perform unless another performer is absent. The swing learns numerous roles (generally chorus parts, but sometimes principle roles as well), and is able to “swing” into the show in various positions on short notice. As if learning one role wasn’t difficult enough!
What part of a set is a “practical”? a) A door b) A light fixture c) A prop d) All of the above ANSWER: d) Many parts of a set are often false and non-functional, but depending on the needs of a show, sometimes things need to function much like they do in real life. If a window needs to open, a faucet needs running water, or a TV needs to turn on, it is considered “practical.” The term is often used (as a noun) to describe a lamp, sign, or other light fixture that is part of the scenery rather than the stage lighting.
