THEATRICAL PERFORMACE
Even if you have never been to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, you have definitely heard its sound. Over the years, scores of musicians such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Wilson Pickett, Mac Davis, Paul Simon, Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones, and even the Black Keys, made the trip to Muscle Shoals, and the music they recorded transformed it from a little-known town to a recording artist’s mecca. This February, you’ll have the chance to experience the playlist of classics that originated in the now-famous locale, with the world-premiere of Muscle Shoals: I’ll Take You There.
Travel with us on a musical journey to the place where scores of memorable recorded hits came to life. We are recreating the feel of iconic recording houses FAME Studio and the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, and we’ll introduce you to the studio band of local players who came together and created the ‘swampy’ rhythm. As word spread, the group gained a following of big-name artists who came to town, putting Muscle Shoals and its unique sound on the popular music map. Remember the cool beat of the Staple Singers’ chart-topping tune “I’ll Take You There,” which inspired the show’s name? Just a few years later, the group was immortalized as The Swampers in the lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic “Sweet Home Alabama.” Their classic sound can also be heard on tracks like “Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett, “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, and “Tell Mama” by Etta James. Muscle Shoals: I’ll Take You There, is created and directed by Arts Center favorite Randal Myler. He’ll be joined by another Arts Center favorite, Danny Wheetman, as Musical Director. You’ll remember Danny from John Denver Holiday Concert and Big River. The band includes Tonynominated Felicia Fields, who took over Oprah Winfrey’s role in The Color Purple on Broadway, as well as Sonny Charles, who was the lead singer of the Checkmates, Ltd. in the ‘60s and ‘70s and has toured with the Steve Miller Band. You won’t want to miss that “Old Time Rock and Roll”—and the stories behind all the music— of Muscle Shoals: I’ll Take You There!

PROFILE
The HillBenders While the idea of a bluegrass version of TOMMY might seem farfetched, once you start listening, it’ll make sense. Many people know the songs from the rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy who plays a mean pinball. “Pinball Wizard” was one of the The Who’s greatest hits, and in 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked TOMMY number 96 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Why do a bluegrass version? The idea came to one of the founders of South by Southwest (SXSW), held in Austin, TX every year. The late musician and producer Louis Meyers had been thinking about a bluegrass TOMMY for a while, and when he saw the HillBenders perform, he knew they were the right band for the job. He was particularly interested in them because of Nolan Lawrence, a mandolinist whose vocals seemed like a great fit, and Jim Rea, the guitarist who arranged the music. Lawrence said, “I think we were all hungry at the chance to do something, first of all with Louis ‘cause he’s got

tons of cred in the industry, and he wanted to back the project and be a part of it. And then once we started to do a couple of the songs, it just felt good, it felt right. And I think everybody kind of latched on and said, ‘OK, this is real, this could work.’” And work, it does! The music has gotten rave reviews from Rolling Stone, The Huffington Post, and even Pete Townshend himself. We guarantee you will be on your feet, singing along by the end of the concert! Catch the HillBenders performing TOMMY: A Bluegrass Opry in its entirety, along with some of their original songs, Thursday, January 19 at 7:30pm.

PROFILE
Jamie Horton It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is a homecoming of sorts for actor Jamie Horton. After spending over 20 years as principal actor with the Denver Center Theatre Company, Horton headed east ten years ago to teach at Dartmouth College. His ties to Denver run deep, and since the move, he’s been able to visit around the holidays to perform in Stories on Stage. This year, he’s thrilled to be back for an extended run at the Lone Tree Arts Center. Horton was attracted to the family of people who would be working on the show, including Randy Myler (director) and other great friends in the cast. He says that the story itself—as it does for so many other people—holds a special place in his heart at this time of year. “I’ve always been a huge fan of Jimmy Stewart’s,” Horton says, “And George Bailey’s journey in that story, and the affirmation that life matters deeply and consequentially, is something that resonates deeply with me.” Life at Dartmouth is different than it was when Horton lived in Denver. He loves working with

undergraduates, as well as the exceptional faculty and staff; it keeps him very alive creatively. He also works with Northern Stage, a professional theater close to home. In October, he played George Orwell in Orwell in America at 59E59 Theaters in New York City. This new play was first read at Northern Stage and then given a full production there. Last here with Creede Repertory’s Unnecessary Farce, Horton says he’s thrilled to be back in Lone Tree with this special project. “As I’ve told others, the sight of the Rocky Mountains always touches us specially—a reminder and confirmation that Denver will always remain a ‘home’ for us.” We’re thrilled too, and we look forward to seeing Jamie back on the Colorado stage!

FEATURED PROFILE PERFORMANCE
“ Don’t cry for me, Argentina.” It’s a line that many of us know, whether it’s being belted on Broadway by Tony Award-winner Patti LuPone’s lips or we’re watching Madonna sing it from our seats in the movie theater. EVITA is the beloved Broadway musical turned movie that follows the Argentinian second wife of ruler Juan Perón, from her early life, to her rise as a political figure, to her untimely death at the age of thirty-three. An illegitimate fifteen year old, Eva escaped her dirt-poor existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president’s mistress at twenty-four, First

Lady at twenty-seven, and dead at thirty-three. Eva Perón—saint to the working-class, reviled by the aristocracy, and mistrusted by the military—was destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th century. The London Times says, “Evita is marvelous modern opera.” The compelling score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice, fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop, and jazz influences. With energetic choreography and a captivating story, this is one production you won’t want to miss!

Cardel Homes has a weak plié – but a superb port de bras. That’s ballet for “we can’t dance, but we’re good with our hands.” Every home we build is crafted by our highly skilled tradespeople. Skilled at building, that is. When it comes to dancing, we’re terrible. That’s why we’re proud to build homes within the South Metro area’s talented performing arts community.
