FROM EXECUTIVETHE DIRECTOR
Dear Welcomefriends,tothe
2022-2023 season of Newman Center Presents! This year, we celebrate the Newman Center’s 20 years in the Denver community. We are proud of the positive and ongoing impact the Newman Center has on the artistic life of the University of Denver and the greater metro region.
We know that our work contributes to building a thriving, dynamic, and diverse 21st-century Denver. This season includes legends like Mexican superstar Lila Downs, who was on the very first season of Newman Center Presents. Her career has grown immeasurably since then and we are thrilled to bring her back to our community. We’ve increased our family offerings with Manual Cinema’s Leonardo!, based on the popular Mo Willems books, as well as Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, fresh off a successful off-Broadway run. We also continue our long-running tradition of bringing artists you’ll brag about seeing in a few years, including gospel musician Damien Sneed, choreographer Kyle Abraham, and vocalist Cyrille Aimée.
The Newman Center values its educational programming as an equal partner to its presenting series, serving thousands of students, teachers, and families every year. I’m especially proud of our Musical Explorers program, which introduces 2nd grade students to musical traditions from all over the world, and our Student Matinee Series, which includes classroom curriculum to prepare students for their visit to hear the Mingus Big Band or Orquesta Akokán.
Your support as a ticket-buyer, subscriber, donor, volunteer, and advocate is critical to making the Newman Center a true community hub for the performing arts. Thank you for these twenty years, and here’s to the next twenty and beyond.

FROM CHANCELLORTHE
Welcome to the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts, a vital source of inspiration, expression, and learning at the University of Denver. Your attendance supports the moving and transformative experiences the Denver community enjoys at the Newman Center. Thank you.
It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the 20th anniversary season at the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts! It is breathtaking to reflect on the thousands of performances that have taken place on the stages of the Newman Center over these past two Fromdecades.theLamont School of Music practice rooms to the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall, the Newman Center is a nexus of inspiration, expression, learning, and connection. And it is through your continued attendance and financial support that the Newman Center for the Performing Arts can serve as a cultural anchor for a thriving, dynamic, and diverse community.
This season, the Newman Center will present the Dance Theatre of Harlem, which will bring the language of ballet to campus in celebration of African American culture. In DU’s ongoing partnership with National Geographic Live, Egyptologist Kara Cooney will share her presentation, When Women Ruled the World. And Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis, will perform their repertoire, renowned for its range and representation of the full spectrum of jazz. In addition, we will host several outstanding musicians, stage productions, authors, comedians and more. It’s going to be a truly phenomenal season.
This season, the Newman Center presents a robust lineup with something for everyone. Dance enthusiasts can look forward to the legendary Paul Taylor Dance Company, in addition to fan favorites Pilobolus, and a celebration of Black culture with A.I.M by Kyle Abraham. Cuban mambo will ring throughout the halls when Orquesta Akokán perform in October. The list of this season’s artists, musicians, and speakers is extensive and full of opportunities to try something new. Whether it’s enjoying bluegrass with Bush Marshall Meyer Meyer or being moved by Grammy winner mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, the Newman Center is uplifting Denver audiences and artists by creating regional and global cultural connections for all to experience.
The University of Denver is proud of the Newman Center. Through these performances, our campus is made even more accessible to the entire Denver community. The artists and performers on the Newman stages share with the audience their gifts, big ideas, voice and perspectives. This is powerful. And it’s important. The Newman Center adds enrichment and opportunities for learning and connection for Denver and the DU community—most especially our students—and so serves a vital role in our commitment to providing a truly holistic, four dimensional experience. Thanks for coming today, and I hope you find many events to attend this season. Enjoy the show.
The University of Denver is proud of the work the Newman Center has done over the past twenty years to become a cultural touchstone, both on and off campus. Like you, I’m excited to be a part of the Newman Center as it sets forth into this new season—and the next twenty years. I look forward to seeing you in the of Denver

about the artist
An innovator of vertical dance, BANDALOOP honors nature, community, and the human spirit through perspective-bending dance. BANDALOOP seamlessly weaves dynamic physicality, intricate choreography and climbing technology to turn the dance floor on its side. Founded by Amelia Rudolph and under the artistic direction of Melecio Estrella, BANDALOOP re-imagines dance, activates public spaces, and inspires wonder and imagination in audiences around the world. The company trains dancers and youth at home and on tour, and has performed for millions of people in over 30 countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Asia, and on screens in films and digital media. BANDALOOP is based in West Oakland, where the company incubates and produces work for its local audiences and for touring performances presented around the globe. Education and outreach are an intrinsic part of the company’s mission. In addition to its ongoing work with youth, BANDALOOP offers regular classes, camps, and intensives at its home studio and in the mountains, and team building programs for executives and leaders of organizations. from the director
MELECIO ESTRELLA, Artistic Director
Welcome to LOOM:FIELD, BANDALOOP’s movement in the fabric of space-time, in a field of intersecting threads, on a vertical structure upon which weaving is made possible. My collaborators and I have been crafting this work over the last two years, and have had many touch points along the way. We learned how the LOOM is the predecessor of the computer, how early fabric creation gave rise to mathematics, the over-under rhythms of weaving being humanity’s first binary code. We made “Breathe Through” a film featuring hand sewn face coverings. We wrote about the scrubs of Filipinx nurses during the pandemic. We touched historical fabrics. We engaged in rehearsal rituals that weave community. We learned from a fashion sustainability strategist. We practiced Nigerian sewing
Photo Credit: Yosemite by Basil Tsimoyianis.techniques. We educated ourselves on how and where our clothes were made. We danced - A LOT. All of these threads are coming together for you here, in BANDALOOP’s LOOM:FIELD.
Thank you for being our guests. The clothes that drape your skin as you read this have a story. They carry a memory of cotton fields, petroleum extraction, dye factories, designers, garment workers, international trade markets. They adorn you with beauty, comfort, warmth and color. They denote class, tribe, and trend - our clothes create unspoken belonging.
The fashion industrial complex is bloated. Our textile consumption is an ecological problem that will be dealt with for generations to come. The history of fiber farming and garment work is one of labor abuse, and these abuses continue today. We are all participants as fabric born microplastics pervade our oceans, waterways, and the fluids inside our very own bodies. How do we ensure a livable, thrivable future for our children’s children’s children? So we look up at the wall. A giant LOOM dressed with nylon climbing ropes. State-of-the-science 10.5 millimeter ropes that can each hold 5,000 pounds. A textile lineage of mountaineering rope-craft. A dance made possible by 30 years of BANDALOOP dancers and riggers led by the graceful and steady dedication
of founder Amelia Rudolph. This work is made in honor of my grandmother Feliza Zamora Santos, who crocheted in the months leading to her execution in WWII Philippines. This work is made in dedication to all of our grandmothers, ancestors past and future, and to the fabric creators and garment workers who make our clothes. In the spirit of Gift, this work of free public art is for YOU. Thank you for weaving community with BANDALOOP. Enjoy.
