FROM THE CHANCELLOR This academic year will mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the University of Denver. Through all of those years (very nearly as long as the city itself has existed) the University has been a major focal point for Denver’s cultural life. This is simply a part of who we are as an institution and of our mission to serve the public good. We seek to develop the extraordinary talent resident in our students and faculty members, but also to be a magnet that attracts the greatest musicians, dancers, actors and artists of all kinds from all over the world to our city, and to present their work to its citizens. All of this is done in an effort to enrich our lives and our culture. The Newman Center for the Performing Arts at DU is surely one of the finest such venues in America. Through the many performances presented here each year we seek to entertain, stimulate, and inspire members of the DU community and the public at large. The Newman Center Presents series lies at the heart of that effort. CHRIS THILE, SOLO MANDOLIN SATURDAY / OCTOBER 5 / 2013 Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer, and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical, rock, and jazz, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. 2013-2014 Season “Music of the Sun” (continued) ETHEL, the pioneering string quartet, and GRAMMY® winning Native American flutist Robert Mirabal, present a program inspired by the sun mythology of Native America. Using the instruments of the string quartet, Native American flutes and drums, as well as the spirited voices of chorus members, ETHEL and Mirabal unite to create a cross-cultural contemporary music event. TREY MCINTYRE PROJECT FRIDAY / JANUARY 31 / 2014 Choreographer Trey McIntyre creates innovative, fun, and technically daring contemporary ballet that speaks uniquely of the American experience. His style is athletic, clever and soulful. Over 18 years as a freelance choreographer, Trey created more than 90 works for companies including Houston Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Moscow Ballet Theatre, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, and Miami City Ballet. In 2008, Trey chose to base his new company in Boise, Idaho, where it has become the City’s Economic Development Cultural Ambassador. Trey believes in the power of art and dance to transform, heal and enlighten. Writing and performing music that moves effortlessly from modernism to vernacular song, pianist, composer, and singer Gabriel Kahane returns to Newman Center Presents after appearing in 2011 with his father, noted pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane. Sponsored by Newman Center Members LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO THURSDAY / MARCH 20 / 2014 Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form (and en travesty), The Trocks, as they have come to be known, first performed in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts. They quickly garnered a major critical essay in The New Yorker, and combined with reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice, established the Company as an artistic and popular success. Very soon their inspired blend of a loving knowledge of dance, a comic approach, and the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, earned them a permanent slot in the dance world. Fisk, a star pupil of the legendary Andrés Segovia, is a leading force in the world of classical guitar, commissioning

At most concerts, we invite you to join us for free Behind the Curtain discussions where you will hear from artists, directors, critics and experts who will share their knowledge, anecdotes and appreciation of and for the performers presented on stage. Lectures are generally held in June Swaner Gates Concert Hall and are open to the public. Behind the Curtain starts one hour before curtain or immediately following the performance in limited instances. Tickets are not required for the preperformance talks and no RSVP is necessary. The University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music presents more than 300 concerts a year, many of them free. Complimentary performances include concerts by the symphony orchestra, choirs, wind ensemble, soloists, jazz ensembles, and steel drum ensemble. Some of these concerts require free tickets. With the Newman Center just having celebrated its tenth season, these avid philanthropists smile when they remember becoming involved in the campaign to create an outstanding center for the performing arts at the University of Denver. Daniel L. Ritchie, then chancellor, invited Judi to head the effort when the Center was only a dream. Later the Center was named in the couple’s honor. The couple’s passion for performing arts and education harmoniously intersected with the Newman Center, which is home to exceptional performance venues and DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre. “Dan Ritchie has often said that love is the principal ingredient in any successful building,” says Judi. “The Newman Center, as well as the University’s many other new buildings, show just how true that is.” The Newmans appreciate the masterful collaboration between Ritchie and DU Architect Emeritus Cabell Childress, and the expertise of Joseph Docksey, director of the Lamont School, and William Temple Davis, chairman of DU’s Department of Theatre, both with the University at the time of construction. They delight in the superb array of Newman Center Presents’ programs presented by Executive Director Stephen Seifert. Prominent in Denver’s cultural community, the Newmans serve on many boards. Their involvement in DU has deepened with Bob joining the University’s Board of Trustees. He also is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the Daniels College of Business at DU. Judi sits on the Trustee Service Committee and the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees at the University of Miami. “Each year brings more recognition to this venue and its world-class programs,” says Bob. “Judi and I are delighted to be part of the University of Denver community.”

GABRIEL KAHANE Gabriel Kahane is a songwriter, singer, pianist, composer, devoted amateur cook, guitarist, and occasional banjo player. This spring, he celebrates the release of his debut album for Sony Masterworks, The Ambassador, a collection of songs inspired by the architecture and popular culture of Los Angeles. His previous album, Where are the Arms, was released in 2011 to critical acclaim, praised by the New York Times for its “extravagant poise and emotional intelligence.” As a composer of concert works, Kahane has been commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, American Composers Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, The Caramoor Festival, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, with whom Gabriel toured last spring performing Gabriel’s Guide to the 48 States, an hour-long cycle on texts from the WPA American Guide Series. An avid chamber musician, he has appeared in recital with string quartet Brooklyn Rider at Carnegie Hall, at the Library of Congress with fellow composer/performer Timo Andres, and on tour throughout North America with cellist Alisa Weilerstein. In a few years, Gabriel has accrued a diverse list of collaborators, having performed or recorded with artists ranging from Sufjan Stevens, Rufus Wainwright, Chris Thile, and Brad Mehldau to Jeremy Denk, Jonathan Biss, and composer/conductor John Adams. Equally at home in the world of theater as on the concert stage, Kahane’s musical February House received its world premiere production at New York’s Public Theater in May 2012; an original cast album was recently released on StorySound Records. Gabriel is a proud graduate of Brown University and a fellow of both the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. He makes his home in the historic Ditmas Park district of Brooklyn, New York, where he can often be found braising unctuous cuts of meat or stumbling through transcriptions of Mahler Symphonies on his century-old piano.

BIOGRAPHIES BRIAN WOLFE, DRUMMER Brian Wolfe was raised in a musical family in Clarksburg, West Virginia and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion Performance from West Virginia University. Since relocating to New York City in 1999, Brian has performed, recorded, and/or toured with a number of diverse artists and producers including David Byrne, St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, Sharon Jones, and the Dap Kings, James Iha, Jim James, Mark Ronson, and Phil Ramone, among others. For the past eight years, Brian has worked most extensively with Shara Worden recording and touring internationally with her band My Brightest Diamond. CHRIS MORRISEY, BASSIST Chris Morrissey prefers the term “songwriter.” Any of the music found on his three records could be called “compositions,” but he writes as one focused on the work that makes a composition a song. It’s that work that has allowed him to develop the very personal voice that appeals equally to a listener’s brain and heart. Tunefulness and simplicity live alongside originality and depth in his music, an infusion explained by his upbringing in the musically fertile state of Minnesota and his current surroundings in the insurmountable New York City music community. As a bassist, he’s logged hundreds of thousands of miles touring five continents with the Jim Campilongo Trio, Mark Guiliana’s “Beat Music,” Ben Kweller, Andrew Bird, Dosh, Mason Jennings, Gretchen Parlato, and most recently with five-time Grammy nominee and multi-platinum selling artist Sara Bareilles, for whom he also acts as music director. As a leader, Mr. Morrissey has released three records to high praise: The Morning World (2009), Cannon Falls Forever (2011), and North Her” (2013), and performs regularly in New York with his bands. He is an avid yoga practicer, coffee, beer and wine drinker, restaurant frequenter, and joke teller/appreciator. He lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in a room that a landlord would call “cozy.”
yMUSIC Hailed by NPR’s Fred Child as “one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music,” yMusic is a sextet of young performers equally comfortable in the overlapping classical and pop music worlds. The “six hip virtuosi” (Time Out NY) play a unique combination of instruments: string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet. This exciting orchestration has inspired an expanding repertoire of works by some of today’s most important artists. Indie rock luminaries Annie Clark (St. Vincent), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), and Ryan Lott (Son Lux) have crafted instrumental works specifically for the ensemble. On yMusic’s debut album, Beautiful Mechanical, the group pairs these works with pieces by emerging composers Judd Greenstein, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Gabriel Kahane, a result that was recently named Time Out New York’s #1 Classical Record of 2011. In addition to performing its own repertoire, yMusic serves as a ready-made collaborative unit for bands and songwriters. In the 2012-13 season, yMusic launches new projects with Dirty Projectors, Gabriel Kahane and Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire. Past collaborations have included work with The National, St. Vincent, My Brightest Diamond, Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Ra Ra Riot, and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. These affiliations have brought yMusic to prominent stages around the world, including Amsterdam’s Muziekgebuow, New York’s Beacon Theater, and the Krannert Center in Champagne-Urbana. yMusic can be heard on Dirty Projectors’ “Swing Lo Magellan,” Son Lux’s “We Are Rising,” My Brightest Diamond’s “All Things Will Unwind,” and a forthcoming record of compositions by Richard Reed Parry. yMusic was created in 2008 to bring a classical chamber music aesthetic to venues outside the traditional concert hall. Its members have individually toured and recorded with artists such as Bon Iver, Bjork, Peter Gabriel, Antony and the Johnsons, Ryuichi Sakamoto, The National, Rufus Wainwright, Grizzly Bear, Meredith Monk, Yo-Yo Ma, The New York Philharmonic, David Byrne and Sufjan Stevens. BIOGRAPHIES ROB MOOSE A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music in violin performance, Rob Moose has established anexciting and eclectic presence as performer, arranger, and conductor in the rapidly changing atmosphere of contemporary music. Since joining Antony and the Johnsons in 2005, Mr. Moose has also toured with Sufjan Stevens,
Beth Orton, and Duncan Sheik and recorded with dozens of artists including Arcade Fire, The National, Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Rufus Wainwright, Marianne Faithfull, and John Legend. In 2009, he co-arranged and music directed The Long Count, a multimedia song cycle commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. Elsewhere, his arrangements have been performed and recorded by Antony, Loudon Wainwright, Trey Anastasio, Glen Hansard, Paul Banks, Punch Brothers, Ra Ra Riot, Elizabeth and the Catapult, Trixie Whitley, and Sharon van Etten. In 2011, after writing the arrangements for their Grammy Award-winning sophomore album, Mr. Moose joined Bon Iver as violinist, guitarist, and singer. Performances with the band include such prestigious venues as Radio City Music Hall, Wembley Arena, and the Sydney Opera House, as well as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Colbert Report, and Saturday Night Live. A resident of New York City since 2000, Mr. Moose enjoys a diverse freelance career that has recently included performances with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Doveman’s Burgundy Stains series at (le) Poisson Rouge, and with Sir Paul McCartney for the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live. CJ CAMERIERI As a trumpet player, french hornist, and keyboard player, C.J. Camerieri has enjoyed an active, diverse, and exciting career since completing his classical trumpet training at Juilliard in 2004. He has become an indispensable collaborator for numerous indie rock groups as a performer, arranger, improviser, and soloist and is a cofounder of the contemporary classical ensemble yMusic. yMusic’s debut record was named Time Out New York’s #1 Classical Record of 2011, the same year that Camerieri won two Grammys as a member of Bon Iver for the band’s sophomore record, which later reached gold status. He is currently the newest member of Paul Simon’s band, joining for 2014’s “Paul Simon and Sting: On Stage Together” tour. C.J. began working in alternative music as the trumpet player and keyboard player for Sufjan Stevens in January of 2006. He then went on to tour the world as a member of a’s band in 2007-2008 before starting yMusic with Rob Moose in the spring of 2008. He joined Bon Iver in 2011 while also touring with Yoko Ono’s Plastic Ono Band. CLARICE JENSEN Cellist Clarice Jensen completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Juilliard School, as a student of Joel Krosnick. She began studying cello at the age of three and piano when she was five in her hometown of Independence, Missouri. While firmly rooted in classical performance, Ms. Jensen is also an enthusiastic advocate for the performance of new music. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed in all manner of venues in New York, from Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium and Zankel Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Alice Tully Hall, to Joe’s Pub, the Brooklyn Lyceum, the Tenri Cultural Center, and the Whitney and Guggenheim Museums. Ms. Jensen performed the U.S. premiere of Guo Wenjing‘s Concertino for Cello and Ensemble as part of the Lincoln Center Festival; the world premiere of Dimitri Yanov-Yanovsky‘s Hearing Solution for cello and ensemble as part of the Silk Road “Artist in Residence” program; the U.S. premiere of Roger Reynold‘s Process and Passion for cello, violin, and computer; the world premiere of Donald Martino‘s Rhapsody for cello, vibraphone, and piano; and the U.S. Premiere of Kevin Volans’ Shiva Dances for string quartet. She has participated in master classes with composers Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, and Ned Rorem and with a number of cellists including Yo Yo Ma, Harvey Shapiro and Colin Carr. She was a finalist in the Stulberg International String Competition, the Kingsville Young Performers Competition, and has performed as soloist with the Kansas City Symphony, the Independence Symphony, the Overland Park Symphony, and the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Interlochen Arts Academy. She also served as principal cellist for two years at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy. Clarice Jensen has performed with a variety of musicians including The National, Grizzly Bear, Silversun Pickups, singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson, and pop star Mandy Moore, live in concert as well as on MTV Unplugged, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. She has recorded with Arcade Fire, Ratatat, Grizzly Bear, Hole, Tyondai Braxton of Battles, MIcachu and the Shapes, Jihae, electronica duo Matmos, and can also be heard on Nico Muhly‘s Speaks Volumes album. She has performed recently with artists including Jóhann Jóhannsson, Dustin O’Halloran, Shudder To Think, Stars of the Lid, Hauschka, and Max Richter. 4

ALEX SOPP New York-based flutist Alex Sopp performs all different genres of music and was recently called “outstanding” and “an admired new music mainstay” by Time Out New York. The New York Times has praised her performances as being “beautifully nuanced” and “exquisite”. Alex is a member of The Knights, NOW Ensemble, yMusic, ACME, and performs regularly with The New York Philharmonic, The Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Wind Soloists of New York, counter)induction, Metropolis Ensemble, The Mark Morris Dance Group Music Ensemble, Gotham City Orchestra, and Continuum. Alex has commissioned, premiered, and recorded with some of the most exciting composers and song-writers of our time, including Björk, Nico Muhly, Sufjan Stevens, The National, Philip Glass, Jonsí of Sigur Ros, Martha Wainwright, Gabriel Kahane, Bryce Dessner, and St. Vincent. Also a composer and improvisor, Alex will soon make her solo recording debut with an album on the newly-minted New Amsterdam label. A regular performer both in the US and abroad, she has performed at the BBC Proms, Bang On A Can Marathon, Bargemusic, Lucerne Fetsival, Dumbarton Oaks, Melbourne International Arts Festival, Look and Listen Festival, MATA Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi, Festival WhyNote Dijon, Carlsbad Music Festival, and the Bowdoin Festival. A native of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, Alex completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Juilliard School, where she was a student of Carol Wincenc and Robert Langevin. HIDEAKI AOMORI Multi-instrumentalist Hideaki Aomori has established a unique career as a freelance performer and educator. Equally comfortable in orchestral, new music, pop, and jazz settings, Hideaki enjoys a diverse range of performances in New York City and around the world. He has collaborated with a variety of artists including Tito Puente, Sir Roland Hanna, Duncan Sheik, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Ron Carter, St. Vincent, Gabriel Kahane, Orchestre de Chambre Miniature, Sean Lennon, Spoon, Harper Simon, and Holly Brook. His multifaceted performing career has taken him to many places around the globe including Asia, Australia, and Europe. In 2006, Hideaki joined Sufjan Stevens for a world tour in support of his album, The Avalanche. As one of Stevens’ featured soloists, he played to great acclaim in such prestigious venues as London’s Barbican Centre and Sydney’s State Theater. In 2007, Hideaki joined
yMUSIC (continued) the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra for a special performance of Stevens’ songs. He also served as principal clarinetist for the recording and Brooklyn Academy of Music’s premiere of Stevens’ orchestral work, BQE. In 2008, Hideaki toured the United States with Tony Awardwinning songwriter/composer, Duncan Sheik. As clarinetist and bass clarinetist, he contributed to songs from the award-winning Spring Awakening, as well as new works from Whisper House and classic songs from Duncan’s catalog. Hideaki also participated in the 2008 Wainwright/McGarrigle Christmas Concert at Carnegie Hall, performing alongside such legends as Emmylou Harris, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson. In addition to his performing career, Hideaki maintains an active and passionate involvement in music education, teaching privately and in schools in Queens and Long Island. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School, where he studied under Ayako Oshima, he received a master’s degree from Queens College and a doctorate from Stony Brook University. At the age of 18, Hideaki released his recording debut, Young Man With a Horn, presented by jazz legend, Sir Roland Hanna. He has recently released an all-Brahms album with renowned pianist Joshua Pierce for the MSR Classics label. NADIA SIROTA “A one-woman contemporary-classical commissioning machine” (Pitchfork), violist Nadia Sirota is best known for her singular sound and expressive execution, coaxing solo works from the likes of Nico Muhly, Daníel Bjarnason, Judd Greenstein, Marcos Balter, and Missy Mazzoli. Her debut album, First Things First,
was released in 2009 on New Amsterdam Records and named a record of the year by The New York Times, and her sophomore album, Baroque, released in March on Bedroom Community and New Amsterdam has been called “beautiful music of a higher order than anything else you will hear this year” by SPINMedia website PopMatters. In addition to her work as a soloist, Nadia is a member of yMusic, ACME (the American Contemporary Music Ensemble) and Alarm Will Sound, she has lent her sound to recording and concert projects by such artists and songwriters as Grizzly Bear, Jónsi and Arcade Fire. Nadia also hosts a radio show on WQXR’s New Music radio stream, Q2Music, for which she was awarded the 2010 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award in Radio and Internet Broadcasting. Sirota is the recipient of Southern Methodist University’s 2013 Meadows Prize, awarded to pioneering artists and scholars with an emerging international profile. She received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School, where she performed as co-founder of the AXIOM ensemble, initiated the Castleman/Amory/Huang studio’s New Music Project, and created the Juilliard Plays Juilliard program for student composers and performers. After winning the top prize in Juilliard’s 2005 concerto competition, Nadia performed Hindemith’s Der Schwanendreher with conductor Marin Alsop and the Juilliard Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall. As a chamber musician, Nadia has collaborated with such artists as Joseph Kalichstein, Itzhak Perlman, and the Silk Road Ensemble, as well as with members of Kronos Quaret, the Chiara Quartet, and the Peabody Trio.
