The season opens with Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile, two genredefying musicians in an explosion of creativity. With the Hot Sardines we find traditional jazz in the lusty grasp of a young generation of performers, a tap dancer among them! Capitol Steps help burst a few political bubbles, while the audience creates the soundtrack for the Swiss theatrical pantomime troupe MUMMENSCHANZ. The King’s Singers, legendary for their unaccompanied vocal harmonies, will take great advantage of June Swaner Gates Concert Hall’s natural acoustics, as will the Colorado Symphony with renowned conductor and soloist Pinchas Zukerman. Four dance companies show the breadth of movement as artistic expression, from China’s first non-governmentally supported contemporary dance company, to Bill T. Jones’ exploration of the human condition, to Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s display of today’s most exciting choreographers, to Diavolo’s thrilling and dangerous work with stage contraptions. We also continue our presentation of artists building on the great traditions of concert hall music but eager to express their own experiences of today’s world. The French double bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons added a fifth string to his bass and developed techniques for playing it so that it fits right in to small ensembles of instruments from various world music traditions. Hear that flamenco guitar? It might just have been Renaud’s bass. The exploratory jazz jam band Medeski Martin & Wood allies with Alarm Will Sound (last here for the thought-provoking multi-media show 1969) for an evening of new music created just for us and CU Presents. Roomful of Teeth, an a cappella ensemble of eight, uses vocal performance practices from around the world to create mesmerizing, thrilling, beautiful sound palettes. The youngest winner of the Pulitzer Prize in music is one of their members. She won the Prize, and the group won a Grammy, for a work you’ll hear in their show. Donal Fox, a pianist of prodigious reach, explores the intersections of improvisation in jazz and Baroque classical music. We’re also excited to have the it gets better tour come to Denver for a week of anti-bullying residency work in schools and community centers, culminating in a performance featuring six members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of LA and a community chorus created in Denver just for this show. Thanks to his unparalleled instrumental technique and his gift for composition, Edgar’s work is appreciated by a vast and varied audience. In the years that followed, having bit the hands that fed them, many of the Steps also ignored the conventional wisdom not to quit their day jobs. The ensemble now tours the U.S., delivering heaping portions of much-needed good humor to the long-suffering American public as the best antidote to politics. 2014-2015 Season company’s origins, bringing to the stage a diverse repertoire, giving young Chinese artists a place to express themselves freely, and highlighting the works of Chinese choreographers. This technically exquisite and thoughtprovoking company tours throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. It also hosts the annual Beijing Dance Festival, bringing the rest of the world’s most innovative work to the nation’s capital. Renaud Garcia-Fons Quartet La Línea del Sur Sat, Jan 10, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. From the moment Renaud Garcia-Fons first held a double bass at age sixteen in Paris, the future of the instrument was destined for change. In a flash of insight, he saw possibilities to use the bass to explore all the music that interested him—classical, jazz, Persian, Indian, Mediterranean, South American, and other forms from the world over. He added a fifth string to the high register and innovated bowing and pizzicato techniques. The result is an utterly new sound—an amalgam of double bass, cello, violin, guitar, lute, oud, and more—that exceeds any conventional idea of playing the double bass. La Línea del Sur features a quartet made up of Renaud on double bass, Flamenco guitarist Kiko Ruiz, accordionist David Venitucci, and percussionist Pascal Rollando. Medeski Martin & Wood + Alarm Will Sound Thu, Feb 5, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. Alarm Will Sound returns to Newman Center Presents after its provocative multimedia show, 1969, a few years ago. AWS is one of the most creative alternative classical musical ensembles working today. Just beyond the cutting edge, this 20-member group consists of young, unstuffy musicians presenting virtuosic new compositions. Medeski Martin & Wood has been an experimental jazz and jam-band trio since 1992. This improvisation-driven group, led by keyboardist John Medeski, offers a unique, groove-oriented mix drawing from jazz, African music, funk, and hiphop. Both AWS and MMW have performed throughout the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Biennale in Frankfurt, from Lincoln Center to the Montreux Jazz Festival. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Sat, Feb 21, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. Sun, Feb 22, 2015 / 2:00 p.m. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s bold vision—top global choreographers, distinctive groundbreaking works, and virtuoso dancers—has fostered a jewel of a dance company in the American West. For 17 years, ASFB has served as a prestigious arts incubator and a showcase for choreographic invention, to both popular and critical acclaim. ASFB’s repertoire resonates with eclecticism and energy. The company exudes a European classical aesthetic charged with American athletic vigor. Since 1996, ASFB has commissioned over 27 new works. Among their many choreographer-collaborators are Jorma Elo, Nicolo Fonte, Trey McIntyre, Moses Pendleton, Dwight Rhoden, and Cayetano Soto. Sponsored by Newman Center Members Roomful of Teeth with the Colorado Symphony Fri, Mar 6, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. Founded in 2009, Roomful of Teeth is a vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from non-classical traditions the world over, the eight-voice ensemble continually expands its singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning project, invites today’s brightest composers to create a repertoire without borders. Their debut album was released in 2012. The New York Times called it “sensually stunning.” It was included on many Best of 2012 lists, topping the classical charts on iTunes and Amazon, even breaking into the top 10 on the Billboard charts. NPR called the album “fiercely beautiful and bravely, utterly exposed.” The album
won a Grammy for Best Chamber Music/ Small Ensemble Performance. In April 2013, ensemble member Caroline Shaw received the Pulitzer Prize in Music for “Partita,” one of the works on the debut album. An iTunes exclusive EP of “Partita” was subsequently released and ranked number one on iTunes Classical charts. ROT will be joined by a string ensemble from the Colorado Symphony. This project received support from The Antonia and Vladimir Kulaev Cultural Heritage Fund, Inc. Donal Fox Inventions Trio: Scarlatti Jazz Suite Project Thu, Apr 2, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. Declared “one of the most successful classical/jazz unions in recent memory” by All About Jazz, Donal Fox and the Scarlatti Jazz Suite Project will bring an electric energy to June Swaner Gates Concert Hall. Fox plays with an improviser’s spirit of adventure, whether playing stride piano on Baroque repertoire or blending the harmonic language of the New Viennese School with bebop. Be prepared to be wowed as he de- and reconstructs Bach, Piazzola and Schumann, adding propulsive grooves and using composed themes as springboards for glorious improvisational flights. Fox has earned a reputation for fluency across the genres which has led to collaborations with jazz artists such as David Murray, John Stubblefield, and Oliver Lake, as well as the Richmond Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony. With his wide-ranging tastes and virtuosity, you can also expect music from Monk, Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman to round out the evening. it gets better Speak Theater Arts / Gay Men’s Chorus of LA / It Gets Better Project Fri, Apr 24, 2015 / 7:30 p.m. it gets better provides a performing arts response to the difficult issue of bullying, one of the most challenging issues among today’s young adults and adolescents. Written and directed by Speak Theater Arts’ Liesel Reinhart, whose company lives by the mantra “don’t be boring!,” it gets better is infused with the dynamic musical energy of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and the internationally recognized It Gets Better Project. In the course of a single week, six members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of LA will work closely with students and schools in a series of workshops, rehearsals, and community dialogue. The week will culminate in a performance of the show in the Newman Center and is intended to heighten awareness of bullying and its damaging effects on any community. The show features a local chorus and local guests and will include video and text projections from the archives of the It Gets Better Project. This project received support from Colorado Creative Industries; WESTAF, the Western State Arts Federation; and the National Endowment for the Arts. 2014-2015 Season body. Diavolo calls itself “architecture in motion” and fuses many different movement vocabularies—from everyday pedestrian movement to ballet, contemporary dance, acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts, and hip-hop. According to Artistic Director Jacques Heim, “What we do on stage is like a live abstract painting. There is no narrative, but strong themes pervade the work such as human struggle, fear, danger, survival, chaos, order, deconstruction, reconstruction, destiny, destination, faith, and love.” Diavolo’s performances will include Fluid Infinities, a stunning work set to the music of Philip Glass, commissioned by the LA Philharmonic and premiered in The Hollywood Bowl. Of those 500 events per year, about 350 are through the Lamont School of Music, about 100 are community rentals, about 25 are Newman Center Presents, and about 25 are by the Department of Theatre. THE LAMONT SCHOOL OF MUSIC & DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE The University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music presents more than 300 concerts

These avid philanthropists and winners of the 2014 Colorado Business Committee for the Arts’ John Madden Jr. Leadership Award smile when they remember becoming involved in the campaign to create an outstanding center for the performing arts at the University of Denver. Daniel L. Ritchie, then chancellor, invited Judi to head the effort when the Center was only a dream. Later, the Center was named in the couple’s honor. The couple’s passion for performing arts and education harmoniously intersected with the Newman Center, which is home to exceptional performance venues and DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre. “Dan Ritchie has often said that love is the principal ingredient in any successful building,” says Judi. “The Newman Center, as well as the University’s many other new buildings, show just how true that is.” The Newmans appreciate the masterful collaboration between Ritchie and DU Architect Emeritus Cabell Childress, and the expertise of Joseph Docksey, then director of the Lamont School, and William Temple Davis, then chairman of DU’s Department of Theatre. They delight in the superb array of Newman Center Presents’ programs presented by Executive Director Stephen Seifert. Prominent in Denver’s cultural community, the Newmans serve on many boards. Among those, Bob is a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. He also is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the Daniels College of Business at DU. The dancer/choreographer presents a very unique style of movement in the piece. Fearlessly throwing himself into the random spaces on stage, the hysterical and stumbling movements conveys a strong feeling of loneliness and helplessness.
Standing Before Darkness is the second work created for BeijingDance/LDTX by the company’s resident choreographer Sang Ji-Jia. This work demonstrates the artist’s unique style in which he ruminates on the capacity of dancers’ bodies and combines their technical and pedestrian movements to evoke extreme psychological tension. The performance is accompanied by live electronic music composed by accomplished Hong Kong musician, Dickson Dee. The work is inspired by a rare piano rendition of Stravinsky’s Fire Bird and indulges in the dialogue between the traditional and the innovative. The movement develops from relative simplicity to extreme complexity, only to return to the purest form of dance movement, the discovery of a new form of existence as suggested in the music.
ABOUT THE COMPANY BeijingDance/LDTX (Lei Dong Tian Xia; literally translated as Thunder Rumbles Under Heaven) was founded in September 2005. LDTX is the first officially registered independent professional dance company outside of the China government system. Under the artistic direction of Willy Tsao, China’s foremost figure in modern dance, and executive Artistic Director Li Han-Zhong, the company boasts an ensemble of technically exquisite dancers with diverse creativities and strong discipline from all over China. The Company aims to create a free platform for contemporary dance artists in China, and to promote the conception of modern dance as a multi-faceted form of arts with emphasis on each artist’s distinctive personality, modernity and originality. LDTX has produced numerous works of different scales and styles including All River Red, Cold Dagger, One Table N Chairs, Pilgrimage, The Pseudo Eagle, Unspeakable, Standing Before Darkness, First Ritual, Sorrowful Song, Layer Code, Treading on Grass, A place, etc. These excellent works showcase the vigorous and unconstrained creativity of Chinese dancers, and reveal the earth-shaking development of the Chinese culture in the past decade. LDTX has toured extensively over five continents with overwhelming response from audience of the United States, Canada, Austria, France, Italy, Korea, Germany, Israel, Australia, Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland, Latvia, Poland, Algeria, Costa Rica, etc, making LDTX an important cultural ambassador from China to the world. LDTX is also committed to various exhibition projects. In 2008, the company hosted the first Beijing Contemporary Dance Festival. In 2012, the event developed into the fort-night Beijing Dance Festival and has since emerged as the grandest in scale and the most influential modern dance activity in China. LDTX works hard on advocacy of modern dance by running a wellequipped theatre/studio setup, as well as a training center that offers dance courses of various levels to the public. WILLY TSAO, Artistic Director Willy Tsao has been an influential figure as choreographer, educator, modern art curator, manager, and director in China’s modern dance development. Born and educated in Hong Kong, Tsao received his modern dance training in the US from 1973 to 1977 and graduated from the University of Hong Kong with an MBA in 1979. Tsao has promoted China’s modern dance on three fronts: Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Beijing. Firstly in Hong Kong, he founded the City Contemporary Dance Company in 1979 and has become its Artistic Director since 1989. In Guangdong, Tsao was the teacher and the advisor for the Modern Dance Program at the Guangdong Dance School from 1987 to 1992 and became the Artistic Director for the Guangdong Modern Dance Company when it was founded by the Guangdong Provincial Government in 1992. He left Guangdong in 1998 but subsequently was invited back to the position by the Guangdong Cultural Bureau in 2004. In Beijing, Tsao served the Beijing Modern Dance Company as its Artistic Director since 1999, resigned in 2005 and established the BeijingDance/LDTX in the same year. Tsao is presently the Artistic Director of the three major modern dance companies in China: Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, and BeijingDance/LDTX. Willy has devoted incessant effort in promoting modern dance in China. Since 1987, he has been giving lectures in universities and art troupes in many cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Kunming, Taiyuan, Daqing, Nanning, Nanchang, Hefei, Changsha, Xining, Urumqi, and Guangzhou. He has set up a series of innovative and collaborative platforms to support local outstanding dancers, excavate emerging artists, develop contemporary culture, and explore sensible operational strategies for dance companies in China. Tsao choreographs works in various styles. Between 1980 and 2014, he has created more than 60 major works, including Bird Songs, Kunlun, China Wind-China Fire, Wandering in the Realm of Lightness, One Table N Chairs, Sexing Three Millenniums, In Search of the Grand View Garden, Warrior Lanling, Dao:Extraodinaire, Conqueror, etc. These works have been presented in the United States, Canada, Korea, Japan, Israel, Germany, and France as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Taipei. Tsao’s contribution to dance has been widely recognized. In 1999, he was awarded the “Bronze Bauhinia Star” by the Hong Kong Government for his significant contribution to the development of local arts. Other awards and honors include the “Dancer of the Year Award” from the Hong Kong Artists’ Guild (1988), the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons” Award (1990), “The Badge of Honor” from HRH Queen BeijingDance/LDTX

In July 2000, Tsao became the Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. LI HAN-ZHONG, Deputy Artistic Director/Choreographer An internationally acclaimed choreographer, Li Han-zhong was born in Kunming, Yunnan province. He joined the Beijing Song and Dance Ensemble of the National Defense and Technology Commission in 1979 and the Guangzhou Military Region Song and Dance Troupe in 1982. Li entered the Beijing Dance Academy, Division of Chinese Ethnic Dance, in 1987 and graduated with a BA degree in 1991. He joined the Guangdong Modern Dance Company as a dancer in 1991 and served in the capacity of Artistic Assistant and Choreographer. He was invited to be the Deputy Artistic Director of Beijing Modern Dance Company in March 1999. In September 2005, Li collaborated with Willy Tsao to found the BeijingDance/LDTX and has served as its Deputy Artistic Director since. Li has choreographed more than 30 works including The Sounds of Heaven, All River Red, Undetermined Domain, Concerto Rhapsody, Rear Light, The Cold Dagger, The Thirteenth Singletons, Rehearsal and Performance: At Odds, Between Lines, First Ritual, and Sorrowful Songs, etc. Li’s important choreographies have been performed in many countries of the five continents including the US, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Korea, Singapore, Australia, Poland, Latvia, Mexico, Algeria, Costa Rica, etc. His choreographic talent is recognized internationally and has been invited to stage works for various dance institutes including the Adelaide Center for the Arts in 1998 and 2000, the Cloud Gate Dance Theater, and the International Choreographers Showcase of the American Dance Festival in 1999.
Modern Dance Company in 1993 and Beijing Modern Dance Company in 1999 and became one of the founding members of BeijingDance/LDTX in 2005. Ma has been collaborating with her husband Li Han-zhong in numerous creative projects and has produced over 30 choreographic works since 1992. As a dancer and a choreographer of BeijingDance/LDTX, she has performed and presented her works in over 20 countries including the US, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, Korea, Singapore, Australia, Poland and Mexico, etc. Among them, the dance All River Red has been toured and performed over 300 times around the world, acclaimed as a milestone in the progress of Chinese modern dance. Ma has been invited to work with international art ensembles: Wright College of Art, Australia in 1998 and 2000, Taiwan’s Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and the American Dance Festival International Choreographers Showcase in 1999. Ma has choreographed and directed a number of large-scale productions, including Song of Movie, The Impression of West Lake, The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, MAO Zhedong, Nursery School of Red Capital, and The Three Kingdoms, etc. Ma’s major choreographic works: Variation of Red, Helpless, Garden of Memory, All River Red, The Cold Dagger, Rear Light, The Thirteenth Singletons, Rehearsal and Performance: At Odds, Between Lines, First Ritual, Sorrowful Songs, Treading on Grass, Speeding, etc.
Li has also been engaged as producer, director, and choreographer for many large scale dance dramas and musicals such as Song of Movie in Beijing, The Impression of West Lake in Hangzhou, The Song of Everlasting Sorrow in Xian, MAO Zhedong in Hunan, Nursery School of Red Captial in Yan’an, and The Three Kingdoms in Chongqing.
SANG JI-JIA, Choreographer An ethnic Tibetan born in Gansu Province, Sang had been a dancer with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company from 1993 to 1998. He won various awards at international dance competitions including the gold medal at the Paris International Modern Dance Competition in 1996. Sang was named “Star across the Century” by the Guangdong Province in 1997. He was awarded the Asian Cultural Council Scholarship and the American Dance Festival Scholarship in 1998. He joined Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company in December 1999. In 2002, under the auspices of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative Program, Sang studied choreography under William Forsythe and stayed with the Forsythe Company as choreographer and dancer until 2006.
MA BO, Choreographer/Assistant Artistic Director/Dancer This passionate female choreographer was born in Mizhi, Shanxi province. She graduated with a BA from the Beijing Dance Academy, division of Chinese Ethnic Dance, in 1991 and was invited by the Academy to be the faculty member. She joined the Guangdong
Sang returned to China in 2007 and became the Resident Artist of BeijingDance/LDTX. SONG TING-TING, Choreographer/Dancer Song is a founding member of BeijingDance/LDTX. A Shanghai native, she trained at the Shanghai Educational University,
Arts College, in the Department of Dance. After graduation, she taught at the Affiliated High School of the Shanghai Educational University. Song joined the Beijing Modern Dance Company in 2002 and then became a founding member of BeijingDance/LDTX. Her choreography includes Play with you, Comma, Fried to Eat, or Boiled to Eat? The Snail, and others. XU YI-MING, Choreographer/Dancer Xu is a founding member of BeijingDance/LDTX. Xu was born in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. He studied at the Beijing Runliang Dance School and joined the Guangzhou Song and Dance Company in 2001. Six months later, he joined Beijing Modern Dance Company. He danced with BMDC until 2005 when he became a founding member of LDTX. He has performed in more than 20 countries around Asia, Europe, America, and Australia. He has choreographed many works including Dad, Twi and Twa, and The Snail. Xu participated in the Zawirowania Dance Theatre Festival as an independent artist in Poland in June 2013. His latest creations include Waiting Alone and Head Against Earth.
DANCERS’ BIOGRAPHIES TANG TING-TING was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu province and began her training at the Affiliated High School of Beijing Contemporary Music Institute from 2006 to 2010. She became a student of the Beijing Music Institute in 2006, and joined BeijingDance/LDTX as a dancer in 2010. She has toured in Germany, Mexico, Sweden, Australia, Poland, Latvia, Algeria, and other countries. Her major choreographies are Transcendence and The Beam. LIU YIN-TAO was born in Xichang, Sichuan Province. She studied dance at the Chengdu Culture and Arts School from 1998 to 2004. She enrolled in the dance department at Sichuan University in 2004 and continued her post-graduate study from 2008 to 2011. She received an MFA in 2011 and joined LDTX the same year. She has toured in Germany, Sweden, Australia, Israel, Poland, Latvia, Algeria, and more. Her major choreography includes South Street and Original Color. Peach Color. XIE XIN was born in Jiangxi Province, and graduated from the Jiangxi Art School in 2002. She began her modern dance training at the dance program jointly organized by the Guangdong Dance School and the Sun Yat-sen University in 2004. She taught at the Training Center of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company from 2004–05. In 2005, she joined Jinxing Dance Theater, Shanghai and later joined
Tao Dance Theater (Beijing) in 2011 as a dancer. In October 2012, she joined BeijingDance/LDTX. She has toured in various countries such as the US, Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, Australia, Poland, Latvia, and Algeria. Her major choreography includes Green, Impression, Fragment, and Fall. GONG XING-XING was born in Xinjiang and received her training at the PLA Art Academy, Dance Department from 2000 to 2006. In 2009, she became a student of the Beijing Dance Academy, Choreography department. After graduation, she became a dancer at Beijing Dance Company and Tao Dance Theater (Beijing). In August 2013 she joined BeijingDance/LDTX as a dancer. In 2011 she has toured in Canada, Israel, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Korea, Algeria, and more. Her major choreography includes The Letter, 3’26”, Quicksand, Elegant city, and others. LI KE-HUA was born in Jinan, Shandong province and trained at Secondary School of Shandong Art Academy in 2009. She became a student Minzu University in the Dance Department in 2009. She joined BeijingDance/LDTX as a dancer in 2013. She has toured in the US and other countries.

He began his dance training at the Qingdao School of Arts in 1998 and enrolled in the Shandong Art School’s Dance Department in 2005. He joined BeijingDance/LDTX in 2009. He has toured worldwide such as in the US, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Sweden, Australia, Israel, Poland, Latvia, and Algeria. His major choreographic works include Hypnotize, Cause, A Sudden Happening Monks and Secular Life Regret, Hear Say, and Return. ADIYA of Mongolian ethnicity was born in Erdos in Inner Mongolia. He began his dance training at Inner Mongolia Yi Meng Arts School in 1998. In 2002, he became a member of the Inner Mongolian Military Dance Company and joined Beijing Tenggeli Tala Arts Ensemble in 2004. In 2012, he joined BeijingDance/LDTX. He has toured in Germany, Australia, Israel, Algeria, and more. His major choreography includes Take a step. GAO YANG was born in Xianyang, Shandong province. He graduated in choreography of the Dance Department of Nanjing University in 2013 and then joined BeijingDance/LDTX as a dancer. He has toured in Algeria and other countries.
LIU XE-FANG was born in Hejiang, Sichuan Province. He began his dance training at the Sichuan School of Arts in 2004. In 2008, he became a dancer of the Chengdu Military Dance Company. He joined BeijingDance/LDTX in 2014. He has toured to Costa Rica and the US. FAN LU was born in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. She studied dance in Shanxi Xi Ju Zhi Ye Xue Yuan from 2000 to 2005, Dance Education in Minzu University of China in 2006, and continued her post-graduate studies from 2010 to 2013, receiving an MFA. In September 2014, she became an intern in BeijingDance/LDTX. DU YAN-HAO graduated in Classical Dance from the Affiliated High School of the Beijing Dance Academy in 2005 and furthered his studies in the New Zealand School of Dance since 2009 with a diploma in Dance Performance. Du was engaged as a dancer for the Beijing dance company, New Zealand’s Black Grace Dance Company (2012), and worked with many other renowned international choreographers and dance companies such as Jiri Kylian, Paul Taylor’s Company B, Janis Claxton Dance Company, and Malia Johnston. He joined BeijingDance/LDTX in 2014. He has toured in Algeria, the US, and many other countries.

Everything about June Swaner Gates Concert Hall was designed for acoustical excellence. The walls are hand-applied plaster, and each wall section between the pilasters is convex. The irregular surface of plaster, enhanced by the curved shape, causes sound to be reflected and distributed evenly throughout the Hall. Plaster does an exceptional job of distributing low frequency sounds. It’s also porous enough to break up short, high frequency sound waves, eliminating the sharp “digital” sound of so much modern construction. Even the heating and air conditioning system was designed in consideration of sound. Air is supplied to the Hall through hundreds of vents in the floor. Very large volumes of air are moved very slowly, thus eliminating the “white noise” of traditional air handling systems. The reverberation time in the Hall can be controlled through the use of acoustical banners which are raised and lowered via a motorized system lodged in the attic of the Hall.
