chancellor Welcome to the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver! For the past fifteen years, within this incredible building, worldclass performers have shared their talents, ideas, and vision with Denver and the DU community. This season, the Newman Center presents the National Geographic Live series — a first for Denver — which explores diversity, conversation, and discovery. We also have the honor to host jazz singer Dianne Reeves and modern classical group Bang on a Can, who will perform with DU’s Lamont School of Music students. And that just skims the surface of the incredible depth of this year’s programming. I am proud that this season prominently features women performers and directors. And I am inspired by the convergence of the arts and social justice by the NEA Jazz Masters, MacArthur Fellows, DU’s own Spirituals Project, and many others. The Newman Center is just one way the University connects with our city and region — and Denver is a city that highly values the arts and culture. Here, our community can find challenging, innovative performances, familyfriendly programming, events featuring prominent thinkers and speakers, and showcases of our talented DU musicians and actors. The Newman Center is also advancing the public good by working with Denver Public Schools to reach students from pre-k through high school. By coming together to enjoy these events, we are participating in and supporting something of immense importance: the joy and transformation made possible through the arts. about the newman center The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver opened its doors in 2002 and has been acclaimed as one of the nation’s finest university performing arts centers. Unique in the region for its size, acoustic quality, and programming, the Newman Center is dedicated to showcasing cultural diversity, stretching the imagination, and stimulating dialogue through the performing arts. The Newman Center hosts nearly 500 events each year with 120,000 people in attendance. At the core of Newman Center’s programming is Newman Center Presents, a multidisciplinary professional performing arts series, showcasing renowned artists from around the world. Newman Center is home to DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre and also hosts community and performing arts organizations such as The Denver Post’s Pen and Podium Series and the Friends of Chamber Music series. The Newman Center is also a regular venue for performances by some of Colorado's premier arts organizations, including Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Denver Brass, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and others. The Newman Center enriches Colorado audiences at the University of Denver through the performing arts by blurring the lines between campus and community, developing key community partnerships, and creating programming for families—introducing new generations to the arts.

A conversation evolves between two mothers at the vigil—one white and one black. Through their interaction, Black. gets to the heart of the matter on communication between races. about the artists donnie l. betts (lowercase is intentional) has years of experience in film, video, radio and theatre. He is a founding member of two theatre companies in Denver, Colorado, City Stage Ensemble and Denver Black Arts Company. He attended Yale School of Drama. His theatre performance credits include The Gospel at Colonus on Broadway, The Warrior Ant at Brooklyn Academy of Music (aka BAM), as well as many regional performances including Spunk, Driving Miss Daisy, Home, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Theatre directing includes House With No Walls, Citizen , Black and Skeleton Crew for Curious, Proof by Lynn Nottage, and others for City Stage, Emperor Jones, Zora, and Slut Energy Theory in Denver and Dallas, and at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York for No Credits, at the Aurora Fox, Zora, Emperor Jones, Hi Hat Hattie, Crumbs From the Table of Joy, K2, The Color Purple, Who Killed Jigaboo Jones, I Go On Singing: the Life of Paul Robeson, Black Elk Speaks, and Porgy and Bess. His film performance credits include Switchback and Honeydripper, both written and directed by John Sayles. His production company, No Credits Productions, produces the award-winning

radio drama Destination Freedom, Black Radio Days and documentary films including Music is My Life, Politics My Mistress: The Story of Oscar Brown Jr., which has been screened at over 25 film festivals worldwide and has won of eleven Best Documentary and Audience Choice Awards and has aired on PBS and other stations nationwide. His first film, Dearfield: The Road Less Traveled, a docudrama about the all-black town in northern Colorado, was nominated for an Emmy and screened on PBS. He won an Emmy for his film, My Voice, a film on spoken word artist and actor Jeff Campbell. His films Lincoln Hills and Dr. Justina Ford currently air on RMPBS.org. His upcoming projects include The Why: Women of Power series and the film Beyond Chaos: Is America Possible? Andrew Jacob Betts is making his Destination Freedom: Black Radio Days debut. Andrew is a second grade student at Polton Elementary School where he enjoys math, art, making his classmates laugh, and his teacher Mrs. Buchanan. He also enjoys writing short stories and playing his violin. Andrew can be seen in the upcoming documentary Beyond Chaos: Is America Possible? Kerrie Joy is an artist, educator, and entrepreneur. Born in Brooklyn and raised on a church pew in Newburgh, NY, Kerrie brings her east coast flare and fervency to the stage for every single performance. The truth of her words and the power of her delivery have been said to lift her listeners out of their seats. It is that same magic that has brought her to stages such as the Red Rocks Amphitheater, TEDx MileHigh, the 2018 Denver Womxn’s March and MLK Marade, and many more. Kerrie channels her creativity through poetry, hip hop, song, short story, graphic design, and fashion. Reveling in her awkward nature, Kerrie also brings a conscious vulnerability and a learned confidence to the classroom where she challenges her students to journey to their truest selves. She shows them how to always assume a posture of learning and humility while maintaining confidence in their innate ability to effect change simply by telling their story. “To tell your story is to tell the story of humanity; and to tell the story of humanity is to tell a greater truth,” says Kerrie Joy. Through local middle schools, high schools, college classrooms, and nonprofit organizations, Kerrie is honored to pour into the youth, giving them something she always knew she deserved as a child: access to themselves and access to the truth. She is currently working ii

on her first extended writing project and is the proud co-host of The SIP Podcast which she began in 2019 with her dear friends and fellow artists Monique Brooks Roberts and Rajdulari. Devra Keyes has appeared in numerous productions at the Arvada Center, the Denver Center, Boulder’s Dinner Theater and the now defunct Country Dinner Playhouse. She has also been involved with Toto Too Theater, the Athena Project and the Evergreen Players. She is proud to be a part of the important and timely work Black. Such (pronounced ‘such’) is a Boston-born, New York-raised, California-educated, Chicago-groomed soul singer. As a performer she has enough energy to power a small city, captivating and winning over audiences in renowned venues across the US, UK, France, Japan, and the Netherlands. As a songwriter, she’s a natural-born storyteller, weaving lyrics that capture the imagination and touch the soul. Her album, Trial and Error (13 originals), follows on the heels of her successful lead single, Sugar Maple, which topped UK’s Soul Charts for several consecutive weeks and is a favorite on urban and satellite radio. In 2016, she became the first and only Black American woman to win an All African Music Award (AFRIMA), continental Africa’s equivalent of a Grammy. After pouring some “such sauce” on Paul McCartney’s classic Maybe I’m Amazed and John Legend’s Ordinary People she’s back with the sultry, silky smooth Before Dark, the leading single from her upcoming album due later this year. Such is also an award-winning actress, earning Henry and Broadway World Best Actress and Best Acting Debut nods for her portrayal of Celie in The Color Purple, has had several TV appearances and finished in the top 60 on American Idol’s season 11. Monique Brooks Roberts is a violinist hailing from Louisville, KY. Now residing in the Colorado area, she is intent on making her mark in the soul/jazz fusion circuit with her sultry and sensual violin work. She graduated in 2005 from Eastern Kentucky University studying with Dr. Eun Hwan Bai and Jeremy Mulholland. Monique has had a busy and fulfilling career, having performed Newman Center Presents Destination Freedom: Black Radio Days

Monique has played at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the John F. Kennedy Center, Radio City Music Hall, The Kimmel Center, Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, the world famous Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, the Theater at Madison Square Garden, The Newport Jazz Festival, The Willingboro Jazz Festival and plenty more. She currently performs and tours with Elegance String Quartet, Rootstock Republic, and is a designated sub for Pretty Woman on Broadway in NYC. Black. is her first play and it was developed in the Curious New Voices summer intensive last year. Born in Portland, OR, Lamaria has lived all over the country. She came to Denver via Washington DC and finished her last two years of high school at East. Lamaria overcomes the daily challenges of living with epilepsy and is a softball player and talented musician playing flute, piano and saxophone. Lamaria believes she’s found a real home and purpose in writing for theatre and film. These avid philanthropists, and winners of the 2014 Colorado Business Committee for the Arts’ John Madden Jr. Leadership Award, smile when they remember becoming involved in the campaign to create an outstanding center for the performing arts at the University of Denver. Daniel L. Ritchie, then chancellor, invited Judi to head the effort when the Center was only a dream. Later, the Center was named in the couple’s honor. The couple’s passion for performing arts and education harmoniously intersected with the Newman Center, which is home to exceptional performance venues and DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre. Former DU Chancellor Dan Ritchie has often said that “love is the principal ingredient in any successful building,” says Judi. “The Newman Center, as well as the University’s many other buildings, show just how true that is.” The Newmans appreciated the masterful collaboration between Ritchie and DU Architect Emeritus Cabell Childress, and the expertise of Joseph Docksey, then director of the Lamont School, and William Temple Newman Center Presents 2018-19 Season

Prominent in Denver’s cultural community, the Newmans serve on many boards. Among those, Bob is a Trustee of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the Denver Art Museum. He is a former member of DU’s Board of Trustees and currently serves on the Daniels School executive Advisory Council. Judi is a Trustee of the Denver Botanic Gardens and sits on the Visiting Committee for the Frost School of Music and the Board of Trustees of the University of Miami.
