chancellor Welcome to the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver! For the past fifteen years, within this incredible building, worldclass performers have shared their talents, ideas, and vision with Denver and the DU community. This season, the Newman Center presents the National Geographic Live series — a first for Denver — which explores diversity, conversation, and discovery. We also have the honor to host jazz singer Dianne Reeves and modern classical group Bang on a Can, who will perform with DU’s Lamont School of Music students. And that just skims the surface of the incredible depth of this year’s programming. I am proud that this season prominently features women performers and directors. And I am inspired by the convergence of the arts and social justice by the NEA Jazz Masters, MacArthur Fellows, DU’s own Spirituals Project, and many others. The Newman Center is just one way the University connects with our city and region — and Denver is a city that highly values the arts and culture. Here, our community can find challenging, innovative performances, familyfriendly programming, events featuring prominent thinkers and speakers, and showcases of our talented DU musicians and actors. The Newman Center is also advancing the public good by working with Denver Public Schools to reach students from pre-k through high school. about the newman center The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver opened its doors in 2002 and has been acclaimed as one of the nation’s finest university performing arts centers. Unique in the region for its size, acoustic quality, and programming, the Newman Center is dedicated to showcasing cultural diversity, stretching the imagination, and stimulating dialogue through the performing arts. The Newman Center hosts nearly 500 events each year with 120,000 people in attendance. At the core of Newman Center’s programming is Newman Center Presents, a multidisciplinary professional performing arts series, showcasing renowned artists from around the world. Newman Center is home to DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre and also hosts community and performing arts organizations such as The Denver Post’s Pen and Podium Series and the Friends of Chamber Music series. The Newman Center is also a regular venue for performances by some of Colorado's premier arts organizations, including Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Denver Brass, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and others. The Newman Center enriches Colorado audiences at the University of Denver through the performing arts by blurring the lines between campus and community, developing key community partnerships, and creating programming for families—introducing new generations to the arts.

the vijay iyer sextet Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer (pronounced “VID-jay EYE-yer”) has been described by Pitchfork as “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” by the Los Angeles Weekly as “a boundless and deeply important young star,” and by Minnesota Public Radio as “an American treasure.” The New York Times has stated, “There’s probably no frame wide enough to encompass the creative output of the pianist Vijay Iyer.” The Vijay Iyer Sextet is a group of generation-defining, virtuoso improvisers—horn players Graham Haynes, Steve Lehman and Mark Shim, alongside rhythm partners bassist Stephan Crump and one of a revolving cast of stellar drummers—Tyshawn Sorey, Marcus Gilmore, and Jeremy Dutton—who leverage a wealth of jazz history even as they push it boldly forward. The music ranges from the thrillingly explosive, to the cathartically elegiac; with melodic hooks, entrancing atmosphere, rhythmic muscle, and an elemental spirit—all part of the allure. Iyer has been working with the members of this sextet for close to 20 years, in a number of different configurations, and Far From Over, Iyer’s newest ECM Records release represents something of a culmination of that work, while also showing Iyer reaching a new peak, furthering an already prolific and diverse artistry.

Far From Over was recorded at New York City’s Avatar Studios, with Manfred Eicher producing. The critical response to the record has exceeded even the tremendous response that Vijay has had through the years. Far From Over ranked #1 in National Public Radio’s annual Jazz Critics’ Poll, surveying 157 critics. The record was named among the best jazz albums of the year in the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Slate, and The New York Times, and also among the best albums of the year (all categories) in Rolling Stone. Jazz Times has Vijay as Artist of the Year on both their Critics’ Poll and their Readers’ Poll, with him also landing as Pianist of the Year the Sextet at #2 Best Group in that Critics’ Poll. Throughout Far From Over, the pianist plays off the melodic-rhythmic possibilities of the material in a characteristically engaging way. His orchestration of the horns is both textural and exciting, but in creating his sextet music, Iyer tends to “build from the rhythm first, from the identity of the groove,” he explains. “Many of the rhythms come from folk

Iyer has performed, recorded, and collaborated with musical pioneers Steve Coleman, George Lewis, Butch Morris, Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Steve Lehman, Craig Taborn, Oliver Lake, Ambrose Akinmusire, Tyshawn Sorey, Matana Roberts, poets Amiri Baraka and Mike Ladd, novelist Teju Cole, and rapper Himanshu Suri.

Iyer explains: “There’s a resistance in this music, an insistence on dignity and compassion, a refusal to be silenced. The music can hit hard while also having a searching quality, a yearning—which is basically a blues aesthetic that has been abstracted and then embodied in different ways by the different players in the group. There’s a defiance there, though it’s balanced by a unity the sextet achieves. Defiance and unity, somehow together—that’s the sound this band captures to me. Joy and danger—that spectrum of possibilities is in there, too.” Iyer has been voted DownBeat Magazine’s Artist of the Year four times: in 2018, 2016, 2015, and 2012. He was named a 2013 MacArthur Fellow, and a 2012 Doris Duke Performing Artist. In 2014 he began a permanent appointment as the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University, with joint affiliations in the Department of Music and the Department of African and African American Studies. Iyer has released more than twenty albums covering remarkably diverse terrain, most recently for the ECM label. His latest is The ii

Iyer is the Artistic Director of The Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, the 2015-16 Artist-in-Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Musical Director for the 2017 Ojai Festival. He holds a doctorate in music cognition from University of California, Berkeley, and his writings have appeared in Journal of Consciousness Studies, Wire, Music Perception, JazzTimes, Journal of the Society for American Music, Critical Studies in Improvisation, and The Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies. These avid philanthropists, and winners of the 2014 Colorado Business Committee for the Arts’ John Madden Jr. Leadership Award, smile when they remember becoming involved in the campaign to create an outstanding center for the performing arts at the University of Denver. Daniel L. Ritchie, then chancellor, invited Judi to head the effort when the Center was only a dream. Later, the Center was named in the couple’s honor. The couple’s passion for performing arts and education harmoniously intersected with the Newman Center, which is home to exceptional performance venues and DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre. Former DU Chancellor Dan Ritchie has often said that “love is the principal ingredient in any successful building,” says Judi. “The Newman Center, as well as the University’s many other buildings, show just how true that is.” The Newmans appreciated the masterful collaboration between Ritchie and DU Architect Emeritus Cabell Childress, and the expertise of Joseph Docksey, then director of the Lamont School, and William Temple Newman Center Presents 2018-19 Season

They delight in the superb array of Newman Center Presents’ programs presented over the years by Executive Directors Stephen Seifert and Kendra Whitlock Ingram. Prominent in Denver’s cultural community, the Newmans serve on many boards. Among those, Bob is a Trustee of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the Denver Art Museum. He is a former member of DU’s Board of Trustees and currently serves on the Daniels School executive Advisory Council. Judi is a Trustee of the Denver Botanic Gardens and sits on the Visiting Committee for the Frost School of Music and the Board of Trustees of the University of Miami. She is also a former Trustee and Treasurer of the Colorado Symphony Association. “Each year brings more recognition to this venue and its world-class programs,” says Bob. “Judi and I are delighted to be part of this University of Denver community.” newmancenter.du.edu
