The Ellie Caulkins General & Artistic Director

elcome back to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House for an exciting opening to our 40th Anniversary Season, featuring a wonderful mix of operas new to our stage and classic favorites. We are pleased to present this special, one-night-only concert production of Mascagni’s one-act masterpiece Cavalleria rusticana. This magnificent verismo opera, an Opera Colorado premiere, will be the perfect showcase for a cast of international singers and our very own Opera Colorado Orchestra and Chorus.

Elizabeth Caswell Dyer Board Chair

Cavalleria rusticana is just the beginning! In November, our mainstage season kicks off with Verdi’s Rigoletto, featuring some of opera’s most glorious and unforgettable music. We continue the season in February with another Opera Colorado premiere, a brandnew production of a rarely-performed masterpiece, Korngold’s Die tote Stadt. Prepare for a truly unique retelling of this psychological thriller directed by Chas Rader-Shieber and designed by Robert

Perdziola. Finally, our season closes with all the tremendous sound and spectacle you could ask for in Puccini’s Turandot.

• Santuzza (soprano), a Sicilian peasant girl and Turiddu’s new sweetheart

• Lola (mezzo-soprano), Turiddu’s former lover and the wife of Alfio

A religious procession enters the church across the square. Despite the sacred backdrop, Santuzza confides in Mamma Lucia that Turiddu has taken up with Lola again. Mamma Lucia is upset by the conversation and departs for mass. Turiddu returns to the town square to find Santuzza alone. She confronts Turiddu about his romantic indiscretions, which he denies, declaring her accusations to be jealous fantasies. In the midst of this lover’s quarrel, Lola passes on her way to church. Despite Santuzza’s pleading, Turiddu follows Lola. Santuzza curses him: “A te la mala Pasqua!” (An evil Easter upon you). Then, she seeks revenge by telling Alfio about Lola and Turiddu’s affair. In the face of Alfio’s rage, Santuzza immediately regrets speaking but cannot take back the words. The die has been cast.

PLOT SUMMARY

• Turiddu (tenor), a young Sicilian soldier on leave

Easter morning in Sicily in the late 19th century.

The opera begins with a serenade from Turiddu, singing about his former lover, Lola. While Turiddu was off at war, Lola chose to marry another, Alfio. Upon his return, Turiddu had a brief love affair with Santuzza, another girl from the village. This Easter morning, Santuzza enters looking for Turiddu at his mother’s tavern. Mamma Lucia invites her in, but Santuzza balks at entering as she has been excommunicated for her affair and ensuing pregnancy. Mamma Lucia informs her Turiddu has left, but Santuzza does not believe her. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Alfio and his rowdy friends. Alfio regales the crowd with an account of the charms of his wife, Lola.

CHARACTERS

• Mamma Lucia (mezzo-soprano), tavern keeper and mother of Turiddu

SETTING

• Alfio (baritone), Lola’s husband

SYNOPSIS

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS The 40th Anniversary Celebration Cocktail Hour is sponsored by Vectra Bank. The 40th Anniversary Celebration Dinner is sponsored by Lisa & Pat Nicholson.

After mass, Turiddu is in Mamma Lucia’s tavern, encouraging the gathered villagers to join him in a drinking song. Alfio arrives and confronts Turiddu, challenging him to a duel. Turiddu accepts. Before departing for the contest, he asks his mother to look after Santuzza if need be. Mamma Lucia and Santuzza await word of the result of the duel. They hear distant cries, and the news arrives— Turiddu has been slain.

Prior to the performance, the screen will automatically display a sponsored message. When singing begins, briefly press the red button to activate subtitles.

The most famous music from Cavalleria rusticana is certainly the Intermezzo between the one-act opera’s two dramatic scenes. It is brief, but oh, so lyrical—tension resolves to serenity. Like the eye of a hurricane, the Intermezzo is a gentle respite before the storm resumes. One imagines the characters are perhaps reflecting on what they should do, but their subsequent decisions result in the deeply human drama to come.

PROGRAM NOTES

conversational phrasing is why one does not often find excerpts from Cavalleria rusticana on recital programs. A live performance with a full cast is a rare opportunity to sample the music’s beauty and power, hearing it in context as Mascagni intended.

Consider also Cavalleria rusticana’s instrumental and choral material. Mascagni opens the opera with a brief prelude that makes it clear this will be an opera containing romance and anger. Not long after, a chorus of worshippers process into the village church for Easter services. Peacefully and reverently, they sing Mascagni’s beautiful setting of the “Regina cœli.” A church choir director searching for something new for worship services might wish to take note.

Instantly, young Mascagni was typecast as a composer of “verismo”— a genre of opera featuring realistic, downto-earth, and often tragic stories. Cavalleria rusticana is all those things, but his following dozen operas were significantly mellower and never widely accepted by audiences or critics. Despite maintaining a busy career as a composer and conductor, Mascagni remained—in the public view—a one-hit wonder, never recapturing the success of this dramatic free-for-all.

Pressing the red button too many times or holding the button down may result in a system failure. If you experience difficulty with the system, please contact an usher for assistance.

As a whole, Cavalleria rusticana’s music is determinedly strong, passionate, and often conversational in phrasing. This style fits well within the context of “verismo.” In real life, people don’t expound for four or five minutes at a time; they converse with one another. The

ENGLISH OR SPANISH SUBTITLES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

In 1888, Pietro Mascagni (1863 – 1945) heard of a competition for one-act operas. With four complete operas to his name, the Italian composer was on the verge of submitting one excerpted act of his historical drama, Guglielmo Ratcliff. However, his wife had already sent in one of his more recent works without his knowledge. The piece was Cavalleria rusticana, usually translated as “Rustic Chivalry,” though there is little conventional chivalry in the piece. A dark and gritty tale of love and revenge in Sicily, it not only won the top prize but also became an international smash hit from the moment of its May 17, 1890 premiere in Rome.
