Welcome to Opera Colorado’s final production of the 2017-18 season—and the first production of Verdi’s Falstaff that we’ve presented in nearly thirty years. This sophisticated Shakespearean gem was the composer’s final opera, and one of just two comedies he ever tackled. It’s perhaps been overshadowed by his many other masterworks, but through no fault of its own: not only is Falstaff full of laughs, it’s also a true ensemble piece that is simply brimming with all the glorious music you’d expect from Verdi. The revelry of Falstaff offers a perfect way to wrap up an Opera Colorado season that has offered so much to applaud. Both the season-opening production of La Bohème and the world premiere production of Steal a Pencil for Me were artistic triumphs and near sell-outs, thanks to the enthusiastic support of patrons like you. Opera Colorado’s first Masked Ball was an evening to remember, and raised funds to be put to good use by the company’s Education and

Community Programs—which this season touched the lives of nearly 40,000 students of all ages. And the return of popular Scene Change events like our Sip & Sing series and An Afternoon of American Song offered audiences the chance to hear unique programs in exciting venues throughout our community. And while Falstaff may be our final production of the season, there’s still more in store before we officially close 201718. We invite you to join us on May 20 for a celebration of this year’s exceptional Opera Colorado Young Artists, and again on June 2 for our annual Spring Tea (learn more on pgs. 14 and 21). The 2018-19 season will likewise offer many delights, including opulent productions of two of the most beloved works in the repertoire: Verdi’s tragic romance La Traviata and Mozart’s brilliant comedy The Marriage of Figaro. Both are on sale now via subscription, and subscribers to 2018-19 have had the first opportunity to purchase tickets for next season’s Scene Change opera: a double-bill of one-act operas After Life and Josephine by Tom Cipullo. The response has been tremendous; all performances of this intimate double-bill, still nearly a year away, are already sold out! (See pgs. 8-10 for more information about next season.) As we prepare for the end of one season and the start of another, all of us at Opera Colorado thank you for making 2017-18 so memorable. We hope you enjoy this performance of Falstaff, and look forward to seeing you back at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House this fall. Sincerely,

D ear Friends, Welcome back to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and Opera Colorado’s 37th Season. This production of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci marks Opera Colorado’s expansion from two to three fully-staged grand operas at the Ellie. We hope you enjoy this tale of the turbulent relationships within a traveling theater troupe, where art imitates life—and vice versa. Coming up later this season, we will present Puccini’s Tosca, a heart-racing thriller, overflowing with power struggles and vengeance. The all-star cast includes two Opera Colorado returning favorites: Melissa Citro in the title role (recently seen as Minnie in Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West) and Stephano de Peppo as Sacristan (recently seen as Dr. Bartolo in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro). Tosca is undoubtedly one of Puccini’s greatest works. The plot follows prima donna, Floria Tosca, as she navigates Rome’s corrupt political landscape. Tosca’s score is one of Puccini’s most evocative. It grabs you from the very first notes and sweeps you up in Tosca and Cavaradossi’s love story, Scarpia’s lecherous conniving, and the grand tragedy to come. Make sure you do not miss this showstopper coming May 2020. While there is still so much to look forward to in the 2019-20 Season, we have already announced Opera Colorado’s 2020-21 Season. For the second

season in a row, we will present three grand operas at the beloved Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The 2020-21 Season is Opera Colorado’s largest season in a decade, both in the scope of the productions and in the number of performances available. Join us for three operas that put passion center stage. Our season opener, based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel, The Shining is a chilling new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell. Then return to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in 2021 for Mascagni’s emotional Sicilian drama Cavalleria Rusticana. This will be the first time in Opera Colorado’s 38 year history that we have produced Cavalleria Rusticana. Finally, we will close the season with the perennial favorite, Bizet’s Carmen. Filled with some of opera’s most iconic melodies, you won’t want to miss this smoldering tale of the brazen and seductive Carmen. Subscriptions for this tour-de-force season are on sale now at operacolorado.org. Patrons like you are essential to supporting the mission of Opera Colorado. It is because of your continued patronage, and our shared passion of this remarkable art form, that Opera Colorado is able to continue expanding and providing high quality operatic experiences, both in the opera house and through educational outreach throughout our state. So, on behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and our artistic family, I thank you for helping us achieve our mission, both now and in years to come.

ARI PELTO | Opera Colorado Music Director and Conductor

6

Appointed in 2015 as Opera Colorado’s first-ever music director, Ari Pelto’s “breathtaking wizardry in the pit” (The Denver Post) has been widely celebrated, with Pelto in demand at opera houses and concert halls throughout the United States. At the age of 24, Pelto was appointed Assistant Conductor at the Spoleto Festival and he has since gone on to conduct worldwide. International engagements include performances with Bochumer Philharmoniker and opera productions at New National Theatre of Tokyo and the Teatro Nacional Sucre in Quito, Ecuador. In 2004, he made his highly-praised debut with New York City Opera, conducting La traviata, after which he became a regular, returning for productions of Madama Butterfly, La bohème, and Carmen. Recent successes include Eugene Onegin at Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Lucia di Lammermoor at Virginia Op-

era, and La Voix Humaine at Chicago Opera Theater. Here in Denver, he has led many acclaimed performances, including last season’s La traviata. Opera Colorado is pleased to announce an extension of Pelto’s contract through the 2023-24 Season.

JOHN PICKLE | Canio Tenor John Pickle quickly has established himself as a strong tenor, most recently for his portrayals of Erik in Der fliegende Holländer, a role he debuted with Los Angeles Opera. In recent seasons, Mr. Pickle also enjoyed performances as Erik with Mobile Opera, Utah Festival Opera, and Michigan Opera Theatre. This season, Pickle performs the role of Cavaradossi in Tosca with Tri-Cities Opera, and performs as a soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. Last season, Mr. Pickle performed Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Pacific Symphony, sang Don Jose in Carmen with Opera Louisiane and Toledo Opera, performed as a soloist in Eugene Suchon’s Psalm of the Carpathian Land with Sonomento and the Kenwood Symphony, in Kodaly’s Te Deum with Oregon Music Festival, and in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Dayton Opera and Springfield Symphony.

Commedia dell’arte is a form of structured improvisational performance that began in Italy. Troupes of traveling performers sprouted up around the country and throughout Europe. A troupe would set up shop in a public place, like a busy thoroughfare or marketplace, and perform for the masses. Actors performed stories based on familiar scenarios and archetypal characters. The stories followed recognizable plots, but each troupe would add their own spin—topical jokes, improvisations based on audience participation, and more! Not only would the audience recognize the plot, they would also know each of the characters on stage. Actors wore specific masks and costumes to indicate which stock character they portrayed. Think about the characters as one of your favorite reoccurring characters from a sketch show, such as Saturday Night Live. The plot may wander, but the characters’ personality, mannerisms, and punchlines are often the same. Several of these stock characters appear in the “show within the show” during act two of Pagliacci: ARLECCHINO/HARLEQUIN Played in Pagliacci by the tenor Beppe. Arlecchino is the mischievous servant. Often dressed in brightly-colored diamond patterns with a long-nosed mask, Arlecchino provides the comic relief to many performances. He is the trickser, acrobat, a bit of a simpleton, and always hungry! COLOMBINA Played in Pagliacci by the soprano Nedda. Colombina is the clever maidservant. Often dressed to match her male counterpart, Arlecchino. Opera lovers might recognize some of Colombina’s typical traits in Susanna from The Marriage of Figaro—flirtatious, canny, and playful.

Played in Pagliacci by the tenor Canio. Usually costumed in loose white clothing with a face powered white—the typical sad clown. In this opera, we see what happens when sadness turns to rage. Pagliacci holds such an interesting juxtaposition. Considered a classic of the verismo movement, it uses the big broad storytelling of commedia dell’arte to tell a very real story of love, heartbreak, and violence. Learn more about Pagliacci, commedia dell’arte, and their place in pop-culture at operacolorado.org/ blog. Written by Suzanne Whitney, Opera Colorado’s Marketing Manager

The main characters in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci are a troupe of Commedia dell’arte performers. While Commedia dell’arte was one of the top forms of entertainment in 16th & 17th century Europe, here in 2020 we thought you might need a refresher. Here is a quick primer on Commedia dell’arte and how it connects to this production of Pagliacci.

WILL LIVERMAN

BY KELLY MAXWELL

the first names I associated with opera. He was a larger than life figure. I also remember seeing early clips of Lawrence Brownlee singing Rossini and I was completely blown away by his power. We’re the same height and it was amazing to see another short black guy singing lead roles. He was absolutely killing it and it was great to see him out there being so successful.

My dad was a big Paul Robeson fan, one of

Yardbird was the opportunity that helped launch my professional career. Opera Philadelphia took a chance on me when I did the workshop for the show. I didn’t really know what to expect. It was really cool because my dad was and still is a big jazz person.

OPERA COLORADO

You just made history as the first African American to perform the role of Papageno at the Metropolitan Opera in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Where do you find inspiration when forging your own historic path?

er’s Yardbird. What was it like portraying Jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, in the heyday of 1950’s Birdland?

2019-20 SEASON

Baritone Will Liverman is an agile performer, adept at navigating classic operatic repertoire, new avant-garde works, and jazz. He is at home in the hypnotic soundscape of Philip Glass, in beloved operas such as La bohème and The Barber of Seville, and in his own piano mash-ups of operatic hits. Liverman is, by any definition, a That’s a perfect segue into performing with Brownlee in Charlie Park21st century renaissance man.

“It’s important that we continue to pay respects to traditional opera, but it is equally important to tell new stories that are relevant to today.” He played the trumpet in school, we listened to a ton of jazz and gospel, and I grew up playing piano. I never stopped playing because it was always a great outlet for me. The coolest moment of the tour was performing Yardbird at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. We were the first opera ever performed at the Apollo. We went backstage and saw all the famous folks who wrote their name on the wall. Yardbird is one of the most successful new operas, making its way into the standard rep.

What do you think about newer works becoming more popular? Why are people paying attention to new opera?

22

It’s important that we continue to pay respects to traditional opera, but it is equally important to tell new stories that are relevant to today. It’s great to see new works coming out left and right, but the kicker is, you never know how a new work is going to be received. Back in the day, operas like The Barber of Seville were not immediately successful. So, I’m really curious to see, over the course of the next few decades, what works will stand the test of time. There is a ton of amazing new opera out there to digest and that is the best possible problem to have. You’re going to be singing Silvio many times after this production. What is your favorite part about the character? That will definitely be something I learn in Colorado because this will be my role debut. I like to compare opera characters to

“You know how the story is going to end, but you end up rooting for him.” movie characters. Don’t make fun of me here, but Titanic is my favorite movie. When I think of Silvio, I just think of Jack Dawson. He is totally obsessed with trying to get Rose away from the life she’s living and feeling trapped by. Silvio and Nedda experience the same dynamic, just without a shipwreck. Silvio is a super passionate young guy and because of that, he’s one of the most relatable characters in Pagliacci. Just about everyone has had an experience where they felt like Silvio. You know how the story is going to end, but you end up rooting for him.  Kelly Maxwell is Opera Colorado’s Multimedia Producer

SPOTLIGHT ON… Wardrobe Supervisor

Alison Milan has worked with Opera Colorado since 2006. As wardrobe supervisor she is the skilled caretaker of our costumes. From makeup stains, to exertions under the lights, to tears from onstage antics, performers are hard on their costumes. Before every performance, Alison ensures the costumes are in tiptop shape. With a meticulous eye, she launders, steams, presses, and repairs each costume before every performance. When asked what she loves about this work, Alison enthusiastically shares, “the unpredictability… Yes, you have similar tasks in every show, but there are different costumes, different challenges. That

constant movement keeps you on your toes and I relish that.” Alison has an obvious passion for what she does and an earnest admiration for her colleagues on the crew. While it was hard for Alison to speak about her incredible contributions to each of our productions, she had no problem heaping praise on fellow members of the crew and cast. Alison mentioned the statistic that for every person on stage, there are ten behind the scenes. The people who pursue a career as a member of the crew do it because they deeply love what they do. “It is hard work. The crew is the first to come and the last to leave. It is all worth it. There is an extreme sense of bliss and accomplishment. The folks who choose this lifestyle - be they cast, crew, office staff, what have you - have true dedication to bringing art to the masses and it takes all of us to make this happen.” Written by Suzanne Whitney, Opera Colorado’s Marketing Manager
