THE SCARLET LETTER
May 7-15, 2016 Opera Colorado will offer the world premiere of The Scarlet Letter in a contemporary adaptation of the classic Nathaniel Hawthorne novel. Celebrated soprano Elizabeth Futral returns to Denver to play Hester Prynne, the young, beautiful seamstress who has an affair and conceives a child in 17th century Boston. For librettist and Colorado Poet Laureate David Mason’s precise, rich and fast-moving text, the composer Lori Laitman has written a work of power and intensity. She reveals characters in their challenging situations, all the while having composed music of lyric beauty that singers love to sing.
Enthusiasts eagerly await the Summer Ovation! in which they learn about the Opera’s upcoming performances. Additionally, patrons will read information on the extensive community outreach. The Education & Community Programs department packs a punch as up to 30,000 students and adults take part in this yearly outreach effort. Members of the program get the opportunity to perform in front of audiences across the state, including the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Their lives are enriched as individuals as well as performing artists. Programming is subject to change and shows can be added, postponed or canceled.
“I am thrilled that we have found a place in our 2016 season for The Scarlet Letter—a new, American opera with music by Lori Laitman and a libretto by our own Colorado Poet Laureate David Mason. This will be The Scarlet Letter’s world premiere, and we are so pleased to present this new work.” – Greg Carpenter Opera Colorado General Director
