LIBATIONS BEYOND

Stay active and be rewarded Everyone is looking for rewards. We have an issue full of active ideas to help you create your own reward system this winter. Work your butt off at the gym, in a yoga class or on the slopes, whatever strikes your fancy — and then reward yourself with an adult beverage or two. Even better, how about getting your workout and your liquid treats all in the same place? With the new year comes an ever-growing number of watering holes where you can exercise your way toward a few beers. And we’re not just talking about one-arm curls. For outdoor recreation, now that the Rocky Mountains have finally experienced a few snowstorms, it’s time to get out and enjoy one of our favorite seasons. In the something old/something new file, we catch you up on ski biking, which apparently was launched in the 1950s but never really caught on like skiing and boarding (despite a brief endorsement from the Beatles). A bunch of enthusiasts will gather in February down at the Purgatory Resort to compete, have some fun and spread the word about this fun way to get down a mountain. Also in the Four Corners area, Durango will again host the late January Snowdown fest. It’s a decades-old tradition with few traditional activities: the theme and events change every year. This year, plan for music, theater, food, drinking, silliness and a come-one, come-all attitude. Just what the dead of winter needs! Also we introduce you to John Garvey, a writer with expertise in the cannabis world. With his help, we’re launching a new cannabis department. Our mission has always been highlighting the connections between our lifestyles and our craft artisans. We are probably overdue in recognizing the place of craft marijuana in Colorado lifestyles and recreation. In this issue, Garvey delves into a new kind of runner’s high, which is becoming ever more popular in Colorado. He plans to expand minds with a variety of topics in future issues.

RIDE ON!

CYCLING MEETS SKIING Ski bikers rally at Purgatory Resort near Durango By Jay McKinney

S

kiing and snowboarding may still dominate the slopes, but ski biking is rapidly becoming a fun alternative. This February the annual Ski Bike Rally is returning to Purgatory Resort outside of Durango for a weekend of friendly competition and casual riding. The modified bikes fastened with skis date back over 60 years ago, with the Austrian ski company Brenter spearheading most production and technology efforts during the 1950s. It became relatively

6 ThirstColorado.com

popular during the 60s and 70s, and even the Beatles were seen riding them in the film “Help”. However, mainstream acceptance has been an uphill battle similar to what snowboarding faced during the 1980s. Thankfully, there is a passionate community that is dedicated to growing the sport and sharing the joy that one can have on a ski bike. Jim Cameron, president of the American Ski Bike Association, has been an avid skier for years but embraced ski biking after his

first time. “I saw the ski bikes and was like, those things look awesome, I’m going to go out and try it,” Cameron says. “At the end of the first day, I’m like, ‘where can I buy one.’ It opened up a whole new realm in the mountain world for me.” With an increasing number of resorts that allow ski bikes, a fast learning curve, and the ability to stand or sit (making it less strenuous), ski bikes are appealing for all age groups and skill levels. Cameron jokes about how he can still race for last chair

on a ski bike, but traditional skiing is much more taxing on his body, and he typically has to call it quits in the early afternoon. This will be the 19th year that Purgatory Resort has hosted the Ski Bike Rally, and riders from across the country

relish the Southwestern Colorado retreat. Cameron loves the town of Durango and believes February is an ideal time to host the rally because people are starting to get burned out on their local resorts. “The town is so cool,” Cameron says. “They welcome us, the hotels give us deals, it’s just been a cool place to do it. It’s just the vibe that the town gives off, it’s not a Vail or an Aspen or a Park City. You walk around the town and it’s just friendly.” So what does the weekend Ski Bike Rally entail? Starting Saturday, people will be able to link up with fellow ski bikers and head out to various parts of the mountain. Participants can keep it mellow or ski the trees, ride steep runs and even practice tricks. Afterward, the main event will be a timed race on a guided course that is easy enough for all skill levels. However, there will be different classes so that competitors with a similar amount of experience can see how they measure up against one another.

Another activity on Saturday will be a poker run, which is a type of race common in motorcycle rallies. It requires the riders to check in and get a stub signed at different locations on the mountain. For those who rank high in the poker run race, prizes will be awarded at the end of the day when the ski bikers gather in the lodge. On Sunday, ski bikers will have a chance to do NASTAR racing down the mountain. NASTAR stands for National Standard Race and is the largest public ski racing program in the world. The program scores racers by giving them a handicap number that represents their ability based on how they compare to a set pace. It’s a way of measuring ability against others across the nation. Cameron lives in Utah and was pleasantly surprised with his NASTAR rank after participating in the program at Park City. “I’m a pretty good rider but I’m not one of the best and I was ranked against probably a couple dozen other ski bikers and I had a really good ranking nationally and I qualified to go to the national championship that they do in the springtime in Snowmass,” Cameron says. Hopefully some of the ski bikers at this year’s rally will be able to lock down a spot in the national ranking. When not on the mountain, ski bikers are encouraged to check out the various tents located by the main lift. There will be manufacturers and a museum tent showing old models and highlighting the sport’s history. The American Ski Bike Association will also have a booth with information about ski biking and how to get involved. After a day on the slopes, ski bikers can drive 30 minutes south and hit the streets of Durango for well-deserved food and libations. Cameron acknowledges that ski biking may still have a way to go before it’s as popular as skiing and snowboarding, but the rally is no doubt growing the sport, providing an opportunity for riders to connect with each other and share their love of ski bikes with those who are just getting started.

Some cast members are from the original Minnesota performance, while most are new to their roles. “When we announced we were going to be doing ‘The Shining,’ interest from performers was very high.” Carpenter said. “There was a lot of competition for the roles and we had a lot – a LOT – of agents contacting us. The show lowers the barriers to entry for newbies. “For one, the opera is in English, so there is no language barrier that you might have in something like ‘Tosca,’” said Carpenter, of the famed Italian opera. Moreover, every seat in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House also has its own personal subtitling system — a plus, even for performances in English. Also, it runs just under two and a half hours, in two acts with an intermission, with a tight, well-tuned staging that runs shorter than many movies. “For some others, it may be that they have friends that don’t want to go. Even those friends can relate to or are likely familiar with ‘The Shining.’ Or even what to wear,” Carpenter mused. Still have questions? Opera Colorado has an FAQ

Fair warning though: With interest levels as high for “The Shining” as for any other show in Opera Colorado’s history, tickets will likely be snapped up quickly for the five performances. Sales are already steady for the February run. Fans of King’s novel will … wait for it … not want to overlook this magnificent run of contemporary opera. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU Reaching beyond the one-arm curl at the neighborhood bar By Kristen Kuchar

L

ong gone are the days of eating wings and pizza as the main activity to accompany drinking at the bar. While we still love some tasty pub grub, the last several years have seen a surge in people wanting to “earn their beer,” as they say. Colorado is home to many people who love both craft libations and physical activity, so it’s a seamless combination. In addition to trivia nights and live music, breweries and distilleries are now offering fitness activities right in the tasting room, making it easier to live a balanced lifestyle.

YOGA IN THE TAPROOM

“We’re always looking for ways to bring people into the taprooms for more reasons other than just to drink beer,” says Katie Schroepfer, marketing and taproom manager at River North Brewery, which hosts yoga every Sunday at the Washington Street taproom in Denver. She says yoga at a brewery, as opposed to a formal setting, is a more relaxed experience for guests. “At a yoga studio, you might feel the pressure of everyone else around you being yogis, while at the taproom we have people of all skill levels, so there isn’t any kind of pressure to be ‘good’ at yoga,” she explains. Fay Ryan has been working at New Terrain Brewing for five years while also completing yoga teacher training, and she echoes the same thought. She says those new to yoga can have fun in a less serious atmosphere, while experienced yogis are challenged to earn that beer. “Yoga at breweries allows a space for all types of people who enjoy yoga. It’s great to play and work hard, and then enjoy a variety of delicious beers,” Ryan says. Kristina Hernández Schostak, communications manager at Left Hand Brewing, says offering yoga at their outdoor beer garden or in the taproom can encourage those who may not have otherwise tried yoga. “It’s a more approachable way to get engaged,” she says, because it’s not in a studio but a more recognizable place. The all-levels yoga has moved inside for the season, and takes place two Sundays each month at Left Hand.

RUN FOR YOUR BEER

Left Hand previously partnered with another Longmont brewery, Shoes and Brews, to host races from the taproom. Shoes and Brews, which is also part running store, holds various races and running activities. Beer-themed runs are by far no stranger here in Colorado. The Colorado Brewery Running Series has held 140 events at 60 different breweries across the state since launching in 2016. A percentage of profits are donated, and the events have raised more than $80,000 for Colorado nonprofits. “Our focus is a lot more (on the) postparty atmosphere,” says Brady Archer, director of events and owner of the series. The 5k races are less formal than traditional races – they’re untimed and often run through neighborhoods without closing streets. Plus, each race ends with craft beer, live music and giveaways.

BOOT CAMP AND BREWS

Brewery Boot Camp is another beerand-fitness venture that has been a huge hit, says company owner and trainer Lindsay Chavez. Since launching six years ago, Brewery Boot Camp has worked with more than 50 breweries and has had more than 2,000 participants in their sessions. Chavez says most of their participants aren’t fans of the typical gym setting. “We have a large number of people who have lost weight and have improved their fitness just with our program,” Chavez says. Brewery Boot Camp has had sessions at many breweries around the Denver area, including Landlocked Ales in Lakewood. “We live in Colorado. People out here love craft beer and are always looking for something fun, healthy, and unique to do,” says Brandi Burgei, co-owner and marketing director at Landlocked Ales. Burgei says some attendees of the bootcamp class have become regulars in the taproom, and class-goers often bring a friend to share the fun. “The vibe is very positive and energetic during the workout, and mostly everyone hangs out for a couple rounds afterwards, and they laugh and have a good time,” she says. But it’s not just traditional workouts taking place in taprooms. Cheluna Brewing, for example, hosts high-energy Latin dance classes every Monday and Saturday.

“Colorado residents, in large part, are very active and fitness oriented, and lots of those residents also love independent craft beer,” says Cheluna owner and manager Jennifer Perez. She feels that promoting fitness builds community while fostering friendships and mental health. Cheluna also hosts a run and walk group every Tuesday.

BARRE AT THE BAR

Becka Repp, owner of Grace and Power Fitness in Loveland, says barre and beer are a great duo. For those new to barre, Repp describes it as a low-impact, full

body workout that combines the principles of dance, pilates and yoga. With small movements and light weights, it builds muscular endurance, tones the body, and builds flexibility. “Bringing barre to the bar helps introduce people to barre fitness that may not be ready to step into a barre studio yet,” Repp says. “It takes away the stigma that barre is only for dancers, or certain types of people. People are less intimidated at the bar.” Kristen Kuchar is a freelance writer covering food, libations, music and other Colorado gatherings.

LADY JUSTICE BREWING’S MISSION IS TO

T

he idea for Lady Justice Brewing came to three women serving in AmeriCorps about 11 years ago. Betsy Lay, Kate Power and Jen Cuesta were working at a small nonprofit in Arvada. They shared a beer together after a tough day of capacity building for the organization — a day when their fundraising requests were met with a lot of no’s. However, despite being in the middle of a recession with people continually telling them they couldn’t afford to give, the women realized people were still willing to spend money on craft beer. “It led them to ask the question: Why can’t we just brew beer and give that money back?” explains Alison Wisneski, director of marketing for the brewery. During law school, Power wrote about the brewery’s concept in a business law class. The business was small at first, starting in 2014 as a 300-square-foot storage room in a former commercial garage. They sold beer through memberships on a 1-barrel system. Lady Justice has now grown to a 7-barrel brewery and taproom that is making a mark on the Colorado community. Power and Cuesta are still practicing law, and Lay recently left

Lady Justice collaborates regularly with Goldspot Brewing. “Kelissa (Heiber) and (Lady Justice’s) Betsy are both queer and women, and they’re also head brewers and owners, which is incredibly rare in the beer world,” Wisneski says. “We are fortunate to

be in constant community and collaboration. Our beers always give back to LGBTQ+ organizations in the greater Denver area as it’s a community we’re a part of and a space we love to highlight.” Lay, who has been a self-taught homebrewer since 2008, leads the brewing efforts. “Our beer is meant to be approachable and we like to ensure we’re offering something for everyone,” Wisneski says. Flagship beers include Liberty Lager, Sandra Day IPA, Chosen Family Extra Special Bitter, and For the Record Stout. The goal of the beer selection is to offer something for everyone, including a hard

seltzer option for non-beer lovers. “Our beertenders are incredible at making sure to walk with you as you choose the right beer for you before settling into the taproom to relax and imbibe,” Wisneski says. There are also regular events in and around the tasting room, including trivia, live music, food trucks, and chocolate and beer pairings. There is also a dog-friendly outdoor space for warmer days. “We see craft beer as community and hope to create a space where all feel welcome,” Wisneski says. Oskar Blues Brewery’s Can’d Aid organization gathers volunteers to make a positive impact in the community – whether it’s curating a love for art and the outdoors or getting water to those who need it most. This is done by maintaining multi-use trails, donating bikes and skateboards to children, donating musical instruments, and much more. The organization has also donated more than 2 million cans of drinking water to people in need throughout the U.S. With recycling and sustainability efforts, such as tree plantings, river cleanups, and recycling, the equivalent of 73 million cans have been recycled. The organization is also currently partnering with Berthoud Brewing on the Berthoud Adaptive Park Project, which is creating the first fully accessible public playground in Berthoud.

LEFT HAND BREWING FOUNDATION

The Left Hand Brewing Foundation was launched in response to the flooding Boulder County faced in 2013. The group raised $76,000 in relief efforts for Longmont. The company now supports primary needs, community support groups, arts and cultural activities, housing projects, medical research, and issues and emergencies in Longmont and beyond. They continue to donate a portion of profits from festivals to specific beneficiaries, and host any local non-profits at the event for free. The Foundation has partnered with Love Hope Strength, Longmont Humane Society, and The Future Arts Foundation, to name a few.

BRECKENRIDGE BREWERY

No matter how or where you bought some Breckenridge beer last year, some of your money probably went to charity. In 2021, the brewery gave $1 from every tour to the Colorado Chapter of Canine Companions for Independence, the largest nonprofit provider of service dogs in the world. One percent of all summer beer proceeds went to the National Parks Conservation Association. The Breck Brew Women in Beer Chapter helps provide educational opportunities for women in craft brewing. Since 2018, the chapter has brewed a beer every year for International Women’s Day, with $1 of every pour funding a scholarship for women in the Beer Industry Program at Metro State University. Brewery employees also volunteer on trail cleanups and other projects.

14ER BREWING

The brewers from 14er Brewing are all about making crushable beer that still allows for an active Colorado lifestyle. Located in RiNo, one percent of brewery sales are donated to the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, a non-profit based in Golden that builds and maintains hiking routes, and educates hikers on sustainable recreational practices.

ODELL BREWING

Odell Brewing Company is committed to giving back to charitable partners and making a positive impact on the environment. The team focuses on providing support and resources for at-risk children, single-parent families, the elderly, and disenfranchised community members, as well as organizations that protect and preserve the environment. Some recent partners include The Growing Project, Wilderness Restoration Volunteers, The Gathering Place, and Cultural Enrichment Center of Fort Collins – an organization that addresses the needs of middle school and high school African American students in Fort Collins.

A ‘MAGICAL’ REVIVAL

Snowdown cranks up Durango - new year, new theme Thirst Staff Report

M

any Colorado towns boast of unique festivals drawing visitors and locals alike for the same activities and attractions every winter. Durango isn’t one of those towns. Its Snowdown celebration is intentionally a different event each year. After a pandemic hiatus last January, the town is conjuring a new “Magical & Mystical” Snowdown festival Jan. 26 to 30. What does that entail? Curious Coloradans may need to travel to the Four Corners town to find out. They should plan to wear a costume and take part in a beard growing contest, a joke-off, a hot-wing eating contest, human foosball, a parade and much more. Perhaps the most important event, and the main revenue source for the non-profit managing Snowdown, is the Follies performance. “Follies is a local production of community members taking time to poke fun at our community and current affairs through talented (and not so talented) skits or acts,” said producer Janalee Hogan. “Acts can be musical, comedic or theatrical. The program states our apologies to all you folk that are miffed, besmirched or psychologically soiled by such tawdry entertainment.” The follies, which became part of the zany celebration in 1984, are new and surprising every year. Additionally, every year different businesses host their own pieces of the Snowdown celebration,

adding up to more than 100 events during the fourday hullabaloo. Some events are annual traditions that are just tweaked to fit the new theme. This year’s event will once again include a parade of lights, an adults-only fashion show and a beer plunge. This will be the 43rd iteration of the festival, which was started in 1979 as a diversion during short and chilly winter days in Durango, which sits at 6,500 feet and reaches an average daily high of 38 degrees in January. The event has since drawn many return visitors. “I have a dear friend that graduated from Fort Lewis College in about 1990,” Hogan said. ”After leaving the area, she returns year after year to get her Snowdown fix. We laugh, shop, dine and enjoy the Follies each year.” After taking a year off because of COVID-19, Hogan said she is looking forward to rallying with everyone for the celebration. “It will be great to get back out and enjoy winter days downtown with friends, neighbors and tourists.” For more information on the festival, lodging options and more, visit www.durango.com/ snowdown.

YES, I SAID RUNNING HIGH, NOT RUNNER’S HIGH By John Garvey

I am ecstatic. I’m running a familiar route from my old neighborhood on a late-summer evening, engulfed in a symphony of cicadas and grasshoppers. The air feels silky and perfect. My legs and lungs burn, but I feel like I’m 17 years old. And I’m very literal-minded, so when I say I’m ecstatic, I don’t mean I merely feel great. I mean I feel utterly divorced from past and future: delighted, clear-headed, grounded, and fleet-footed. I’m effortlessly running about 15 seconds per mile faster than my casual running pace. And I’m high on weed.

January-February 2022

ThirstColorado.com 29

B

efore I embark on the topic of running and cannabis, let me be clear that running high isn’t for everyone, and I’ve always been a little weird. And as with all things, there are wrong ways to go on a doob run (tips and guidelines forthcoming). But for an increasing number of runners, from fair-weather 5K types to competitive ultramarathoners, cannabis and running go together like champagne and wedding night sex. This topic has been reported on in waves since about 2015, shortly after I had first combined running and cannabis. The focus here will be on what makes running high so psychologically appealing, and on practical tips from a thoroughly experienced highfunctioning pothead runner.

CHEMICALS, BABY. WHO CARES WHICH DOOR THEY CAME IN?

“The runner’s high” has long been attributed to a class of feel-good chemicals called endorphins that are naturally present in the brain. But today the prevailing explanation is that anandamide — another feel-good and pain-relieving neurochemical — causes

runner’s high. Anandamide binds to the same receptors in your nervous system as THC, and shares many of its effects. If testosterone wears plaid, anandamide wears tie dye. My first runner’s high, at age 17, was one of the defining moments of my life. My first time smoking weed was not. But there were similar chemicals at play. Anandamide is one of a cocktail of neurochemicals that helps you get into a flow state: a deeply engaged, focused frame of mind with no awareness of the passing of time. Flow states are delightful. In a book on this very topic, “Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work,” authors Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal note that “anandamide also plays another important role here, boosting ‘lateral thinking,’ which is our ability to make far-flung connections between disparate ideas.” That’s why runner’s lore is rife with revelations and solutions to problems. Ecstasis is often just a more progressed flow state. It’s intense and joyful. Many experienced runners know the difference between a ho-hum run, a flow state run, and an ecstatic run. These occur naturally. But my theory based on extensive personal experience is that flow states and ecstasis are markedly more likely to occur if you’re running high. This is because anandamide, which your body produces naturally, and the THC in marijuana pair as perfectly as Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris did on their “All The Roadrunning” album.

TIPS AND PRECAUTIONS

The following beginners’ guidelines are based on a combination of personal experience, conversations with other runners, Reddit forums, inductive reasoning, and helpful articles written by and about athletes. Caveat: Some athletes have successfully flaunted these. But these are

likely to contribute to your success, or at least help you avoid a crash. Dress first. Unless you’re an exceptionally high-functioning stoner, having to change clothes while high can constitute a significant barrier to actually getting out the door. Mode of consumption. Edibles are more likely than smoked or vaped cannabis to produce a lethargic “body high” that will derail your run. At the same time, smoking is more likely than vaping to irritate your throat and lungs. Finally, vaping concentrates is more likely to result in sub-optimal dosing (too much or too little) compared to vaping flower. So when in doubt, vaping flower is your best bet. Strain. This is rudimentary so I’ll summarize: sativas are generally energizing; indicas are generally relaxing. Getting high on sativa or a sativa-dominant hybrid is more likely to result in a successful run. It’s also ideal to use a strain you’re familiar with. Just Say No … to treadmills. A big part of the magic of running high is all the elements of the outdoors. Even if you’re in a heavily urban setting, being outdoors is ideal, if not essential. Plus, it’s not exactly driving a forklift, but things can still go very wrong on a treadmill.

ON YOUR MARKS …

If you happen to enjoy running and cannabis separately, try doing them together. If you like weed and you’re ambivalent about running, try doing them together. If you want to delve into this topic further, Denver journalist and distance runner Josiah Hesse just published the book “Runner’s High: How a Movement of Cannabis-Fueled Athletes Is Changing the Science of Sports.” My impression so far is that he’s a seriousminded, gifted writer (go to ThirstColorado. com for our review). But I do wish I had gotten around to publishing that book first.
