As the popularity of our state and national parks grows, it’s ever-more important to plan ahead in order to visit the parks and enjoy. One of the national-level park reservation services recently reported that the number of people reserving sites had doubled since COVID-19 began. However, it often varies. Those willing to avoid the most-traveled trails will have more luck. That’s precisely why we’ve matched up our four national parks with four nearby state parks that might be easier to navigate during the busy summer months.

With so many styles of beer filling our glassware, it’s fun to highlight a brewery that is drilling down into the pilsner style with such intensity. Cohesion Brewing is still finding its footing in Clayton neighborhood but it’s garnering plenty of attention with great beers. And for those who harbor a dream that never seems to fit into a busy schedule, we reveal the story of Renée Brinkerhoff. Her passion to improve the world while having fun is inspirational. Experience an adventure that will send a chill up your spine. Phil Lear is well known to folks who frequent some of the clubs in downtown Colorado Springs, but his talent and reach are still unfolding as you’ll see inside.

DOUBLE DOWN Pair a state park with a national park for year-round getaways Thirst Staff Report

A

re you planning your summer adventures? And do you have Colorado’s national parks on the list? Our state boasts four national parks. All are major draws for visitors — both in-state and from around the world. But many of those tourists aren’t aware of the lesser-known but still stunning state parks. Get to know more of the state’s special places with these itineraries for tripping through a nearby state park on the way to or from each national park.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK AND BOYD LAKE STATE PARK

Stop and splash around in Loveland on your way up to Rocky Mountain National Park, outside Estes Park. Boyd is among the most urban state parks, so it’s easy to get provisions and party on the beach with your peeps before heading into the solitude of the RMNP backcountry. On the other hand, if you are heading up around Bear Lake, which is packed with people all summer, Boyd Lake might seem pretty isolated. For being basically in the middle of Loveland, it is rarely overcrowded. The top activities in Boyd are boating, camping, fishing, biking, swimming and family cookouts. Also, despite being an urban park, there are still activities more associated with the backcountry. “Waterfowl hunting has been an activity at Boyd Lake for over 100 years and still continues to be popular,” said Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Public Information Officer Jason Clay.

GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK AND LATHROP STATE PARK

Lathrop State Park sits outside Walsenburg about an hour east of Great Sand Dunes National Park. These two parks are a study in contrasts. For much of the year, the dunes are an arid lunar landscape while Lathrop boasts a pair of lakes that were protected in 1962 as Colorado’s first state park. Dry out on the sand dunes and rehydrate in the water.

Martin Lake is a warm-water lake offering water skiing and power boating. Horseshoe Lake is a no-wake lake designated for canoes, kayaks, sailors and swimmers. Both lakes offer paddle boarding, and the park also has the only golf course in a state park. Lathrop also has an archery practice range, miniature golf course, 13 geocache sites and an equestrian trail. “We are family-friendly and have a variety of activities for every age,” said Park Manager Stacey Koury. “We are small enough to enjoy most activities on one weekend visit, and large enough to not be crowded.” Lathrop also offers history lessons. A hotel was built on Martin Lake in the early 1900s, and many cultural sites show where prehistoric people camped in the same area.

MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK AND MANCOS STATE PARK

Many visitors stop at Mancos State Park for a picnic or hike before the one-hour drive south to Mesa Verde. “Mancos State Park offers a quieter experience all 12 months of the year,” said John Livingston, Southwest Region Public Information Officer for CPW. “There is great open-water fishing most of the year and ice fishing in the winter, and the trails are great for hiking or snowshoeing all year, too.” Mancos is also one of the best parks for standup paddle boarding. “Mancos State Park is a wakeless body of water, so it provides a nice quiet place for paddle boarders looking to avoid waters with motorized boats,” Livingston said. In addition to tent sites and yurts, Mancos also offers a unique winter camping option. “In the winter when there is adequate snow, igloos are built at Mancos State Park that people can actually rent out for camping,” Livingston said. “They are getting better and better each year with our project manager always coming up with great ways to improve on the previous year’s design.” He added that visitors need to be bear aware in summer and fall, and that campers with larger RVs will find fewer hookups and fewer sites that accommodate longer setups.

BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK AND CRAWFORD STATE PARK

Most Black Canyon visitors head east of Montrose onto the south rim of the canyon, which boasts a large campground, river access and the most popular routes into the canyon. The other side of the canyon is a longer trek, but it’s a 2-for-1 deal. Visit the north rim, then drive across the road to Crawford State Park. “Being only 20 minutes away from the spectacular North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Crawford State Park is really a hidden gem and an ideal base camp for those visiting the national park,” said John Livingston, Southwest Region Public Information Officer for CPW. With less crowded camping and more water access than the national park, Crawford offers a multitude of outdoor recreational opportunities for all seasons, including fishing, boating, water skiing, paddle boarding, swimming and wildlife viewing. Winter also brings ice fishing and cross-country skiing.

Fuzzy graffitti? Ladies Fancywork Society dresses Denver, Meow Wolf in art By Jay McKinney

C

rocheting is no longer just a pastime for grandmothers: It has been embraced in the art world. Yarn bombing is an oxymoron of sorts, in which street artists weave soft and fuzzy yarn into creative patterns that are placed in public view as a modern genre of non-destructive graffiti. After first being popularized by a Houston street artist in 2005, yarn bombing became a national trend. In Denver, the Ladies Fancywork Society (LFS) has run with the idea, installing art — legally and illegally — at different locations including the Colorado Convention Center, a boutique hotel and the Meow Wolf art exhibition. Artists Lauren Seip, Tymla Welch, Jesse Dawson and Jessica Eaton make up LFS, which stitches together a creative vision and a fun-loving work approach. Together, their enthusiasm is contagious as they finish each other’s sentences like sisters who share the same brain. The four friends met through work and school, and recognized their mutual love for crocheting. Little did they know, as they were honing their craft together as friends, that they were laying the foundation for a successful and unexpected art career. “We kind of started crocheting together,” Seip says. “I feel like we’re all kind of producers in a way and none of us are really good at sitting still and sitting on our hands, and there comes a point where you don’t need another hat.” The LFS was born when they decided to turn their casual hobby into artwork for objects around the city. The group’s whimsical name incorporates the formality of ladies and the whimsy of fancywork, an outdated word for ornamental needlework, crochet and knitting. “We just wanted a name that was kind of silly and kind of the opposite of a lot of the ways we act and present ourselves and our art, which is not ladylike and a little garish and loud and clashing,” Welch says. With such a lengthy name, they frequently just go by the initials LFS. “When we started 14 years ago, we obviously had no idea we’d still be doing this, and on this scale,” Welch says. “It was just something silly we did together as friends, and it still is, but now with a little more official documentation.” After starting with smaller tags on light posts and benches, LFS drew attention when they dressed the dancers outside the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in leg warmers. The project was larger than anything the group had done, and they were eager to create even larger pieces. In a notable rogue project, LFS fastened a giant ball and chain to the big blue bear statue peering into the Colorado Convention Center. They wrapped an 8-foot beach ball in strips of crochet and secretly installed the piece overnight. The accessory was quickly removed, but the project made local headlines and boosted the LFS reputation. LFS soon secured more legal and commissioned projects. While the members of LFS had no intention of turning their hobby of crocheting into a paying art career, they are all pleasantly satisfied with the string of events (ok, pun intended) that has ensued. Now operating out of a studio instead of each other’s basements, their massive art pieces require much more preparation than they used to. Every project is site-specific and involves hours of logistical brainstorming about the structure, materials and measurements. March-April 2022

CONVERGENCE STATION

The LFS is among more than 100 local artists represented at Denver’s Convergence Station, the newest Meow Wolf installation. The colorful building near Colfax Avenue and Interstate 25 can’t be missed. Visit meowwolf.com or call 720-792-1200 for tickets and details.

“It kind of starts with the place, and then we sketch out what we envision for that place and then start thinking about how we can make its bones structurally, and then go from there,” Seip says. In the past several years, LFS has featured small, imaginative creatures that are placed on rooftops, fences and other locations throughout the city. Seip and Welch joke that it can be hard to reach some of the installation spots. “Good thing there’s four of us because we do the buddy system sometimes. We sit on shoulders and stand on each other’s knees, or hold each other’s feet while you lean over the edge of a roof,” Welch says. While the outdoor installations pose challenges and eventually deteriorate in the elements, LFS has also been commissioned for some indoor projects including an installation at Convergence Station, Meow Wolf’s location in Denver. LFS is one of more than 100 Colorado artists with work featured in Convergence Station. Their artwork features a creature named Midge the Swamp Mom-ster and her baby bloops, which hail from the yarniverse and are hanging from the ceiling of their swamp cave. The multi-sensory installation includes extra-terrestrial noises that were also created by LFS. “When you go in that room, you’re actually hearing our weird little beeps and whispers and squishy sounds,” Seip says. “We’ve always wanted to add sound and lighting elements to our work but it’s kind

14 ThirstColorado.com

of been out of our reach, so it was really great to be able to have someone else in charge and handle that.” Despite Midge the Swamp Mom-ster checking all the boxes of a typical LFS creature, it was one of their most extensive and challenging projects. The project took nearly two years as they ironed out details about the location, fire codes and other logistical hurdles. “We had to adhere to some stricter codes than we normally do because it is permanent, indoor and with such a high volume of people,” Welch says. For example, they used wool in order to comply with the fire code. After finally getting the green light to start creating, LFS went straight to work and completed Midge the Swamp Mom-ster in about six months. While the Meow Wolf installation adds to an already impressive portfolio, LFS continues to populate the Mile High City with more creatures from the yarniverse. The group also was commissioned to create art for the Acoma House, a boutique hotel near the Denver Art Museum with customized rooms designed by local artists. Jay McKinney is a Colorado native who recently graduated from Metro State University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He loves spending time outdoors, playing golf and hiking.

“Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum” — at The Rabbit Hole, a subterranean restaurant in downtown Colorado Springs. “In trying to put a twist on some Alice in Wonderland characters I’ve depicted throughout the restaurant, I thought of modernizing these two as a couple of backwoods, Depression-era dustbowl twins. The croquet mallet in Tweedle Dee’s hand might have played a part in his brother’s toothache. I was a little leery of painting a kid picking his nose to go up above a dining table, but I get a lot of compliments about it.” - Phil Lear

THE NARRATIVE OF PHIL LEAR By Kristian DePue

16 ThirstColorado.com

March-April 2022

“The Poet, the Priest and the Politician” — displayed at Shame & Regret, a cocktail bar in downtown Colorado Springs. “I took the name from a Shame & Regret cocktail. I like to include Easter eggs in some paintings, and there are a few tucked away in this one: references to Woody Guthrie lyrics around the politician, the Holy Grail in the poet’s hand, and behind her you can see the ghost of her muse.” - Phil Lear

E

veryone has a story to tell. Colorado Springs artist Phil Lear has many stories to tell, and they don’t require a thousand words. Lear’s oil paintings are hanging in various venues, including Shame & Regret, Cork & Cask and Bonny & Read. The underground nightlife space The Rabbit Hole also features his work. The eclectic downtown restaurant has a subway-style entrance into what was once the city morgue. Rabbit Hole owner Joe Campana commissioned Lear to produce paintings based on and inspired by “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. In Carroll’s 1865 novel, a youngster falls in a rabbit hole and she explores a world of fantasy involving creatures of all kinds. Lear took the concept and ran with it, much to Compana’s delight. Lear also finds inspiration in the splendor of everyday life, and his work is always couched in a narrative; yes, there’s always a story behind his paintings.

He started exploring his artistic inclinations at a young age. He was born in the Great White North in 1975 before his family moved to rural Pennsylvania 15 years later. “My parents used to get me these books,” he explains. “They were blank pages where the top half gave you space to draw and the bottom half had lines for you to write a little story with it. I always thought that triggered something within me … to where I am now, as far as painting with a narrative in mind. There is always something that I am inventing in my head about these characters. There’s always been a story to go with all the artwork I’ve done.” Lear’s dad worked at a slaughterhouse in Pennsylvania. “I remember he used to take me to the plant when they were delivering the pigs,” he says. “It was both terrifying and intriguing to watch these pigs herded and moved by cattle prods on a death march. The squealing and the sweaty, foggy smell — I’ve never forgotten it.”

I try to tell anyone who wants to be an artist, just take that leap of faith. The first step is just to do it. — Phil Lear

“Suicide Voyage” — at Bonny & Read Fresh Seafood and Steaks, downtown Colorado Springs. “I envisioned a kraken or giant squid terrorizing the high seas, and the only way to get rid of the monster was to blow it out of the water. I harkened back to Looney Tunes with an over-the-top stash of explosives piled on the ship. As the creature engulfs the vessel, our captain is waiting to turn at the appointed moment and fire her blunder gun, igniting the kegs.” - Phil Lear

“Temptation” — at Shame & Regret. “The owners were looking to give the place the feeling of a confessional, so angels, saints, devils and nuns were my cast and crew.” - Phil Lear

18 ThirstColorado.com

March-April 2022

He eventually earned a commercial art degree from a conservative, ministerial Christian college in Pensacola, Florida. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world, but it was definitely strict,” Lear says. “Guys and girls had different staircases.” The quality education would pay off later. “They had a good, classically based art program and the art classes were pretty terrific,” he says. “And when I moved into working with oil paints, I fell in love. I just loved it.” After college, Lear chose to do an internship in Switzerland because of a guest speaker that he found mesmerizing. “His arms just seemed to reach out from the pulpit across the room to you in your seat,” Lear says. With help from an art student friend, Lear eventually landed a job with a religiously affiliated publishing company in the Pikes Peak region. However, the position ended abruptly when Lear was dating someone with a severe drug addiction who was killed. Although he had no connection to the death, his employer fired him.

“The Iron Outlaw.” “This piece sold at an exhibit featuring lesser-known figures of the Old Wild West. Ned Kelly was Australia’s most renowned outlaw — an impressive feat in a land populated with them. When he decided his gang needed to upgrade their personal protective equipment, they pounded plow parts into armor to become bullet proof.” - Phil Lear

“Admittedly, I wasn’t an exemplary employee either. I was late all the time,” he says. His firing quickly led to losing his home and living in a car. Eventually, he was invited to live in the Cottonwood Center for the Arts, a nonprofit organization in Colorado Springs. He was creating art, but often eating ketchup packets and a donut each day to survive. Lear had become a true starving artist. “I remember making it a whole week on $2.35. You have to train your stomach, and you never eat before bed. Being that poor is very draining. It wears you out but part of me enjoyed being a vagabond.” Despite the struggle, he kept experiencing moments that reminded him that things would work out if he kept moving forward. Things did take a turn for the better after some of his shows and exhibits caught the attention of the Colorado Springs community. “(Artist) Brett Andrus introduced me to Phil Lear,” says Campana, the restaurateur. “I had my own ideas for what I wanted from Phil, artistically, and he did a few pieces which surpassed my imagination. I tell him what I’m looking for and he always creates something far better.” Andrus, a gallery owner, also offers high praise for his comrade. “I have been painting with Phil and exhibiting his work for 14 years,” Andrus says. “He is one of my favorite painters on the Front Range. Phil is an artist that was born 130 years ago. He fell into a wormhole and was blasted into the future. His work is timeless, well painted, clever and with dark humor. He truly makes a great painting “ Both Lear and Andrus have their work displayed at Campana’s cocktail bar, Shame & Regret, in addition to the other bars Campana owns. Lear also stays busy teaching and applying his art in the libations industry. He teaches oil painting classes called Dare to Paint! at his former residency — or residence, Cottonwood Center for the Arts.

“Phil possesses the rare combination of mega talent and the ability to meet students where they’re at,” says Annie Pieper, director of education at Cottonwood. “He’s very ‘Canadian’ about it. Softspoken and polite, a little quirky, but also earnest. You could take his class five times in a row and come out with a new way to fine tune your skills every session.” You can also see Lear’s work on the labels of various wines offered by Ladrón Cellars in Englewood. They use grapes from vineyards in California’s Central Coast and Western Colorado. They “smuggle” the grapes to the Englewood location, hence the Spanish word for thief, Ladrón. “We’ve been working with Phil Lear since 2017 and are constantly amazed by his creativity,” says Richard Crockett, owner and winemaker. “He consistently produces incredible artwork for our wine labels. We receive compliments constantly about the artwork.” With his own narrative having gone from such a dramatic low to being busy with creative commissions, exhibits and teaching classes, we asked Lear how he expects his next chapter to unfold. “I’ve got a pretty good foothold in town here, but the face of the area is changing,” Lear says. “I’ve been teaching for a year and a half, and that’s been very fulfilling. I enjoy finding fun ways to continue that. Projects and inspirations, for me, they’ve always come like a knock on the door. I’m intrigued to see where Colorado Springs is going, and what that will bring to my door. I wish I had some sort of future feat to allude to, but I’m just keeping my mind and brushes busy for the moment.” Check out more of Lear’s work at phillear.com. Born and raised in rural Indiana, Kristian DePue works as a contributing writer in Colorado Springs. In addition to writing, he enjoys travel, watching films, and a good cocktail.

This butternut squash soup is a savory, coldweather favorite and is best enjoyed with a local pint. CZECH, PLEASE! Learning the ins and outs of Czech brewing traditions with Eric Larkin of Cohesion Brewing By Kyle Kirves

24 ThirstColorado.com

T

he Czech Republic has the highest per capita consumption of beer in the world. And it’s not even close!” says Eric Larkin, founder and head brewer at Czech-inspired and -influenced Cohesion Brewing. That may sound surprising to beer fans stateside who see an awful lot of suds downed with their touchdowns at any ballgame. Yet beer is foundational to Czech culture in a way it isn’t anywhere else – and Larkin embraced that culture after an eye-opening trip to Europe. A brewing vet with more than 10 years in the industry, Larkin was amazed that it had taken him so long to be exposed to Czech brewing traditions and history. “I’d had Czech-style beers here in the states and thought, ‘Yeah, these are good, drinkable beers,’” he says, “But when I visited Prague and Pilsen, I could tell something was different. Everything from the beer itself to the pouring styles to the fermentation methods was distinct and different and memorable.” One surprise? The reverence the Czechs have for Urquell, the original pilsner beer. “If you ask for a pilsner in the Czech Republic, you’re going to get the original Pilsner Urquell, brewed in the city of Pilsen since 1842,” Larkin says, redefining that commonplace term many Americans associate with macro-beer. “Pilsner comes from one place only – everything else is, or should be, pilsner-style – including ours,” he continued. “While not an appellation, it is kind of a general agreement that that word isn’t used for any other beer than Pilsner Urquell.” But that doesn’t mean that the Urquell is the only Czech beer out there, or the only one Czechs enjoy. Far from it. Czech brewing tradition embraces many fermentation and mashing techniques, creating a multitude of flavor profiles and styles. Cohesion Brewing, which opened last year in Denver’s Clayton neighborhood, is a showcase for many of them. “One of the first things Czech brewers learn is decoction mashing – a technique we use at Cohesion,” Larkin says. Without getting too scientific, it’s a method that is prominent in the Czech Republic and Germany. Brewers take some of the mash out of the main mash, boil it separately, and return it to the main. It’s a key characteristic of certain beers, making them a bit richer and fuller in flavor, Larkin said. Cohesion also embraces open fermentation, horizontal lagering, and a natural carbonation method that comes straight out of Czech brewing history books (and some tour books – you can still find Czech brewers using these techniques today).

“We strive to brew with Czech methods as much as we brew with local ingredients, the same as they would there,” he says. “We work with Troubadour malt specialists in Fort Collins to make a special malt just for us. Varietals and local (ingredients) contribute a lot to the individuality and character of Czech beers regionally. We try to emulate that.” All of these elements contribute to what goes in the glass. But beyond what you’ll taste, Cohesion also reproduces what you’ll see at traditional breweries: distinct style-pouring techniques imported from the Republic – something that may raise eyebrows for the jerk-and-tilt crowd. “LUKR faucets (side pull taps) are common in the Czech Republic, and aid in the different pours with various levels of foam native to Czech tradition,” Larkin says. “Up to and including the mliko pour, which is a full-foam pour meant to be consumed quickly before settling.” Wait a second: full-foam pour? I thought foam was a bad thing, indicating the keg was floating and it was time to move on to the next house party. Turns out foam is a good thing in Czech beer tradition, though you can expect varying levels of foam to your preference at Cohesion. It’s all part of providing a near-authentic, Prague-on-thePlatte vibe – something that will reward the experimental beer tourist. “The Czech people take a lot of pride in their beer. And that includes the tapsters, what we would call bartenders,” Larkin says. “It’s a role people take seriously and put a lot of attention toward.” It’s an ethos that infuses Cohesion’s mission. Larkin explains, “I have a strong belief that we are a better country and community when we embrace diversity and other cultural perspectives. We want to

26 ThirstColorado.com

March-April 2022

be able to add to the diversity of the brewing community by bringing Czech styles to Denver. The public here is so knowledgeable. We thought people would latch on to it. We’re asking people to trust us and taste these beers along with us.” So, just how close is Cohesion to hitting the bull’s eye in terms of replicating both Czech beer styles and the beer hall experience from central Europe? Judging by native Czechs visiting Denver, better than just pretty close. “Our opening weekend, we had a patron in from the Czech Republic and she commented that the beers taste like home and Cohesion feels like home. We could not receive a better compliment than that,” Larkin said. That ringing endorsement alone should make you want to Czech out Cohesion for yourself and learn a few things along the way about their rich tradition of brewing. Find Cohesion in Denver’s east RiNo area at 3851 Steele St. Kyle Kirves drinks beer, plays guitar, runs trails, and manages projects – all with varying degrees of success. While not a craftsman himself, he is quite content writing about the Colorado artisans who create such wonderful things and memorable experiences.

GC LOUNGE

Recently opened in Denver’s Uptown neighborhood on 17th Street, the GC Lounge features state-of-the-art golf technology and a full-service bar and restaurant. The rise in golf’s popularity, coupled with its prime location and colder temperatures, will require every inch of the 3,849 square-foot location to accommodate the guests that are flocking to this place.

And there’s fun to be had for all skill levels. Four TrackMan golf simulators will allow guests to play rounds of golf on some of the world’s premier golf destinations such as Pebble Beach and Shangri-La Golf Course. For those less interested in keeping score and more interested in bragging rights over who can hit the ball farthest, the simulators also offer games such as a long driving contest, capture the flag and closest to the pin. Three of the four TrackMan simulators are available to rent on a reservation basis for $60 an hour ($40 for every additional hour), while the fourth simulator is available for one-hour sessions to walk-in guests. Clubs are provided with each bay, but guests are also encouraged to bring their own clubs if they would like. Aside from the golf experience, the GC Lounge will also lure visitors with its incredible food menu that will include country club staples such as a club sandwich, roasted chicken and crab cakes. The bar and kitchen program is led by Chef Toby Prout, who brings over 30 years of restaurant experience to this indoor country club’s menu. After a series of challenges that delayed the grand opening, Founder and Principal Partner for GC Lounge, Michael Burbage is thrilled about this new “eat and play” concept that is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. “This is just the beginning for GC Lounge,” Burbage says. “I am looking forward to seeing the impact we can make on the golf and hospitality communities through our attention to detail with the menu and programming, all the way to our focus on mental health for our staff.”

the Tennyson Street location in the Berkeley neighborhood or the original location at South Broadway and Iliff Avenue. For those who’ve never had an ace, order “the hole in one,” made with John Barr Scotch, sweet vermouth, lemon juice and orange bitters.

SOUTH BROADWAY COUNTRY CLUB

Aside from being one of the best new bars in downtown Denver to post up and watch sports, Tom’s Watch Bar, located within McGregor Square, also offers three Topgolf Swing Suites. From 11 a.m to 5 p.m guests can rent the suites for $25 an hour. After 5 p.m. the rate doubles during the peak hours until the bar closes. In addition to the Topgolf target game, guests can enjoy other games including zombie dodgeball, hockey shots and baseball pitching.

With two Denver locations and a new location opening in 2022 in Fort Collins, the South Broadway Country Club is not a typical country club. Unlike the exclusive upper-class country clubs, this one proudly displays the words “non-members only” on the company’s website, where guests can rent out TrackMan simulators and order a variety of golf-inspired cocktails. Grab some friends and book a tee time at either

X GOLF

Located in the Denver Tech Center, X Golf is a golfer’s winter haven. The amazing simulators, lesson opportunities from PGA professionals and even leagues for golfers to join, will ensure that they stay sharp through the cold months. It’s also available to cater to events both big and small, so keep X Golf in mind for an upcoming birthday party, company outing, or any other occasion that calls for friendly competition and lasting memories.

OPTIMUM GOLF

Optimum Golf was established in 2019, and is dedicated to growing the game and helping people of all skill levels find passion in the sport. The company has two indoor locations, in Park Hill and RiNo, where golfers can enjoy simulator rounds, receive instruction and get clubs fitted or repaired. Optimum Golf is proud of the high-quality instruction it provides, and guests can choose between individual lessons, group classes or private clinics. The one certainty in the game of golf is that there is always room for improvement.

Racing for human rights Renée Brinkerhoff is not your typical race car driver By Jay McKinney

A

nyone who’s brave enough to travel to Antarctica and endure the planet’s most extreme conditions obviously goes there on a mission. Colorado’s Renée Brinkerhoff is no exception. She recently raced her vintage 1956 Porsche 356A across 356 miles of Antarctica’s barren ice sheets to conquer an impressive feat: race a car on every continent. Named the Project 356 World Rally Tour, Brinkerhoff’s inspirational journey started in 2013 and concluded in an epic fashion in December 2021. In the last eight years, she’s broken down barriers as a female racer and raised a substantial amount of money to combat human trafficking. While the rally tour is completed, there’s still more in the tank for Brinkerhoff, who has vowed to continue racing. One might assume that Brinkerhoff comes from a family entrenched in racing, but her introduction to the sport is far from conventional. She has no background in racing cars, and for years her primary responsibility was homeschooling her four children. Despite the lack of knowledge or racing experience, she told herself that one day she would race a car. When Brinkerhoff turned 55, she decided it was time to fulfill that secret desire. “It wasn’t something I wanted to do. I realized it was something I had to do,” Brinkerhoff says. “I thought I would go race one time and check that box and go back to enjoying my life.” That did not happen. She fell in love with a vintage Porsche, developed a passion for rally racing and became hooked. In her first race ever, she participated in the La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico, and Brinkerhoff described it as a metamorphic experience in her life that she needed to do again. Nearly 20,000 miles later, Brinkerhoff, her dedicated team and the Porsche 356 have traveled to nearly every corner of the world, competing under the name Valkyrie Racing. What’s in a name? Well, there’s a lot of symbolic meaning behind Brinkerhoff’s racing name. The name Valkyrie was suggested by one of her children, and refers to women warriors in Norse mythology. On the racetrack, Brinkerhoff is without a doubt a modern-day Valkyrie. But it’s her work off the racetrack that really makes Brinkerhoff a warrior. When she decided to start rally racing, she wanted to race for a cause and bring awareness to an issue that deserves more attention. She chose to fight against human trafficking after being inspired by a chance encounter she had with an FBI agent. Now her charitable organization, Valkyrie Gives, has raised nearly $400,000 to combat the global issue.

After learning more about the mythological role of Valkyries, Brinkerhoff found the name to be even more fitting. “They (Valkyries) go to the battlefield and they rescue the worthy that are wounded and dying and take them back to Valhalla and restore life,” Brinkerhoff says. “Without even realizing all the meanings behind Valkyrie, it’s so fitting. We want to be modern-day Valkyries.” Like a battlefield, her racing journey was marked with dangerous terrain, breakdowns and wrecks. But Brinkerhoff was unrattled and she continued to race, serving as a beacon of hope to so many of the people she’s encountered over the years. “Giving hope and inspiration to other people to live dreams and reach for things ... those are about the most memorable things that I take away,” Brinkerhoff says. “The racing obviously is exhilarating and frightening but it’s those experiences with all of those people that I remember the most.”

ANTARCTICA: 356 MILES TO GO

In her latest endeavor, the absence of civilization was noticeable in the harsh landscape. From the beginning, Antarctica was planned as the final leg of Brinkerhoff’s world rally tour, and it posed new challenges. While it was not a race per se, the level of preparation was heightened as Brinkerhoff set out to drive 356 miles on the planet’s harshest and most unpredictable landscape. One of the most obvious challenges was the actual surface she raced on. The ice required a special modification to the car. The tires were replaced with skis in the front and tracks in the back.

The car maintained the classic Porsche beauty and performed perfectly thanks to Kieron Bradley, a chassis design engineer who spent more than 18 months working on the modifications. Brinkerhoff was introduced to Bradley after searching for experienced guides to accompany her on the journey, and finding Jason de Carteret. Both Bradley and de Carteret are extreme explorers who set a world record for the fastest overland journey to the South Pole. After speaking with de Carteret over the phone, Brinkerhoff knew she had to get him on board. “He knows that terrain and I realized very quickly that if we want to come home, if we want to have a successful go at it, we need Jason,” she says. “So we interviewed each other and agreed to do this project together.” De Carteret has been to Antarctica more than a dozen times. In one stint, he cross-country skied through the dangerous environment for more than a month. His calm demeanor would fool most people into believing he lives on an island working as a bartender, but he says he feels strangely at home in Antarctica. “She put together an amazing expedition with the help of her crew in order to take a car to Antarctica where there are no roads, there is no recovery system, there is nothing. You are pretty much on your own out there,” de Carteret says. “But it gives you the most pure exhilarating experience you could ever ask for.” While he may feel at home there, de Carteret acknowledges the incredible dangers in Antarctica. The frigid temperatures are expected and prepared for, but he says the bigger dangers are the ones you can’t see. “Crevasses are pretty much everywhere. It’s like driving on a very steep mountain path where you have steep drops on both sides ... and then try it blindfolded,” de Carteret says. “The snow looks flat, but there could be something very perilous right at your wheel and you don’t even know about it. At the end of the day, you’re going into an envelope of danger.” Because the ice is constantly moving at a slow pace, it cracks to form these invisible dangers and they must be monitored constantly. The crew prepared by surveying the area with ice-penetrating radar and outfitting the Porsche with a crevasse bar in case they were to fall into one. The idea being that if the skis were the first thing to fall through, hopefully the bar that extends in front of the hood would catch on the

32 ThirstColorado.com

March-April 2022

other side of the crevasse. Fortunately, de Carteret was right alongside Brinkerhoff in the Porsche and guided the adventure with the utmost precision. “There were some times when we were driving in a whiteout with almost no visibility, and in rally racing you have to have an amazing relationship with your navigator. I had a new kind of trust experience in this vehicle with Jason,” Brinkerhoff says. The ice-penetrating radar system would often show that their path could not deviate right or left more than 10 meters, or just over 30 feet. Helpful information when the visibility was non-existent. Despite whiteout conditions on three of the five racing days, Brinkerhoff was able to accomplish the goal of covering 356 miles on Antarctica. She was accompanied by long-time mechanic Simon Redhead, videographer Neil Carey and her daughter Christina, who wears multiple hats for the organization and is also a photographer who helped document the expedition. Along with Redhead, Christina has been part of the Project 356 World Rally Tour since the beginning and there was no way they were going to miss out on the grand finale. To celebrate the accomplishment and show some love to Valkyrie Racing’s premier sponsor, PXG Golf, the crew took the car back to the Drake Icefall, where they had completed the milestone and proceeded to hit golf balls with the company’s latest driver. They made sure to hit pink golf balls so they could be easily spotted and retrieved. While Brinkerhoff has accomplished her goal of racing her Porsche on every continent, the fight against human trafficking is not over. Valkyrie Gives is determined to raise $1 million and continue rescuing people from this under-reported global issue. “How do you get people’s attention and get them engaged in what you care about? You have to get them to listen to you,” Brinkerhoff says. “We wanted to do something outside the box.” Brinkerhoff doesn’t know exactly what she will do next to raise awareness about human trafficking, but she says there’s no doubt in her mind that she will race again. Until then, her story is an inspiring reminder that it’s never too late to pursue dreams and fight for positive change in the world. Jay McKinney is a Colorado native who recently graduated from Metro State University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He loves spending time outdoors, playing golf and hiking.

Why microdose marijuana? Wee bits of weed can boost focus, productivity By John Garvey

F

alling into a state of timelessness, effortlessness, euphoria, and single-minded focus is never a bad thing. We experience these states — termed ecstasis or flow states — during activities we feel are deeply and inherently rewarding. Microdosing cannabis isn’t a recipe for a flow state, but bear with me. The allure of flow states is the reason that extreme athletes ignore the warnings from loved ones and push the envelope further and further, even to their doom. But a cup of coffee, a good conversation or, many are learning, a microdose of cannabis can help us commoners find our flow. I had one very telling flow-state experience that was weird simply because of the mundane and unappealing nature of what I was doing. Not coincidentally, it was in the early days of my experimentation of cannabis microdosing. And guess what riveting activity this was? Making a PowerPoint presentation. Yup. Not exactly playing a guitar solo at Madison Square Garden.

34 ThirstColorado.com

March-April 2022

After briefly pondering why I felt so cheerfully focused and competent doing something I usually dislike, I remembered that I had taken 2.5mg of THC about an hour prior. Perhaps eight days a month on average, I take ¼one fourth of a 10mg THC edible to get “un-stuck” or improve my performance along some dimension. I call it “The Quarter Gummy Solution.” When I do this, I ask more incisive questions in my work, find crowded events less grating, write more fluently, and take on mundane household tasks with less dread and fewer mistakes. It also helps me manage my raging ADD. Enough people have figured this out about themselves that lowdose cannabis edibles are becoming increasingly available. But is microdosing right for you?

MICRODOSING 101

Although the concept of microdosing originated, and is generally associated, with psychedelic drugs like LSD and psilocybin (“magic”) mushrooms, we’ll stick with cannabis.

If you do it right, microdosing cannabis can help boost creativity, mood and productivity. But you have to honor your individual temperament, intuition, and experiences. Anything novel can be unpredictable, even if it’s far more likely than not to be benign. Just as caffeine can make you either anxious or cheerful depending on who you are and what you’re dealing with, so can weed.

DOSING RANGE

Although some define anything below 10mg THC as a “microdose,” this is a lousy definition. If an average person takes 7.5mg of THC, their workday will likely come to a screeching halt within an hour. A much more reasonable range is 1mg – 5mg of THC. There’s not a ton of research on the effects of microdosing weed. But studies on low-dose cannabis consumption and nanodosing suggest that “going low” can relieve anxiety and improve cognitive function under conditions where higher doses might do the opposite. But especially promising is research suggesting that low doses of cannabis can prevent cognitive decline.

THE QUARTER GUMMY SOLUTION

The quarter gummy solution is a reasonable starting point for most people who aren’t first-time users. Unless you’re an outlier, 2.5mg of THC won’t make you too high to feel comfortable carrying

a conversation, nor will it be too little to have any effect whatsoever. If you’re inexperienced with cannabis, or have a naturally low tolerance to drugs in general, or have other reservations, start with 1.25mg THC. (Cutting a 10mg weed gummy into equal 8ths is tedious, but lowerdose 2.5 – 5.0 mg edibles are becoming easier to find.) Optimizing a microdosing practice requires honoring your intuition and checking in with yourself, rather than taking everything a budtender (or a 38-year-old man who writes about weed and draws T-Rexes riding on unicycles) says at face value. If you don’t honestly enjoy it – or if you enjoy it too much to walk the line – don’t do it. Be consistent. Make small adjustments as needed. Be safe. Honor your own intuition and the uniqueness of your own experience. You know what? I don’t care what you do. Just don’t tell my parents how much I know about weed.
