O
ut of all the 14,000-foot mountains in Colorado, Pikes Peak is in a class of its own. A massive 14er that stands alone physically and often steals the spotlight on the Front Range horizon, Pikes Peak has not only been dubbed America’s Mountain, but it’s also the site of a historic and dangerous car race. The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), nicknamed “The Race to the Clouds,” is celebrating its 100th running this year. That breeze you feel is Zebulon Pike spinning in his grave. Pike was an explorer commissioned by Thomas Jefferson to explore the Great Plains. He came across the Rocky Mountain obtrusion that bears his name in 1806. The daunting mountain that appears to rise straight from the valley floor had Pike convinced that no person would ever reach its summit. He was wrong. In contrast with Pike’s grim assessment of the mountain, entrepreneur and philanthropist Spencer Penrose saw its untapped potential as a tourist attraction. A carriage road to the summit had been built by 1900. By 1915 Penrose finished converting the road into the Pikes Peak Highway. To publicize the new road and bring visitors to his hotel, The Broadmoor, Penrose arranged the first PPIHC race in 1916. Rea Lentz won the inaugural event with a homemade car in an upset victory. Since then, the race has attracted legendary drivers from across the world and is now the second oldest motorsports race in the United States. Aside from halting the race during World Wars I and II, it has happened every summer since the early 20th century. With 156 turns and a steep elevation gain, the 12.42-mile racecourse is not for the faint of heart. There are six different classifications for racing, and each car is racing for the best time, as opposed to side-by-side with their competitors. Present day racers have the luxury of a fully paved road, but there are still considerable challenges that drivers face competing in the PPIHC. As the drivers race toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and can hinder their mental and muscle ability. The elevation increase also has a negative impact on the car and decreases the power of internal combustion engines up to 30 percent. And there’s always the

potential for the weather to take a turn for the worse and reduce visibility and traction. While racing can be dangerous in any scenario, the PPIHC surely poses some peculiar challenges. But that doesn’t stop some of the world’s most talented racers from taking their shot at the mountain. If anything, it probably encourages them.

TOMMY BOILEAU
One racer who will take on the mountain for the 100th running lives right here in Colorado. Tommy Boileau is a native who comes from a family with deep roots in racing. His mother and father met at a racetrack when they were kids. Racing came easy to Boileau, even when he was a youngster. Now the 28-year-old has competed in a variety of racing formats
around the world. Of all the races he’s experienced, he says nothing compares to the Hill Climb. “Come race day, you have to get mentally prepared for what’s ahead and realize this is legitimately the most dangerous race in America, if not the world, and there’s a good shot I could die,” Boileau says. In his first race in 2019, he recalls the moment he was getting into his car and course officials stopped him to warn of a bad accident that had happened on the road. One of the generation’s best motorcycle racers, Carlin Dunne, had crashed just before the finish line and died. Motorcycles no longer compete in the race. “That was heavy,” Boileau remembers. “Rookie year, first time racing it, and I’m literally strapping into my car and they come over to tell me that one of the best guys who’s ever raced the event on a motorcycle just died.”
Despite the terrifying introduction, Boileau managed to win the Rookie of the Year award and finished 3rd in his class. Since then, he has signed on with the DuSold Designs racing team and races a 1967 Camaro that has been customized to handle the rigorous course. In addition to the mental preparation, Boileau acknowledges the physical challenges that both the racer and the car can experience. The lack of oxygen becomes more apparent as racers reach the top and even though Boileau has adjusted to the climate, he says other racers from lower elevations sometimes struggle. The cars, however, are all susceptible to breakdowns and mechanical difficulties when drivers romp on them at high altitude. The wiring harness in Boileau’s car caught fire about 10 seconds after he crossed the finish line when he won Rookie of the Year. But that wasn’t the only time his car came out worse for wear. In 2020, his power steering didn’t feel right as he pushed the limits toward the summit in a preliminary round. As he was going into a corner, the entire steering system failed and he crashed into the mountain, destroying the car. Had it
happened three or four corners earlier, Boileau would have gone off the mountain into what the drivers call the Bottomless Pit, a 3,000-4,000-foot vertical drop. There are unpredictable road conditions that can interfere with the race and enhance the danger. “I’ve run into hail, snow, rain, you name it up there,” Boileau says. But then there are other hazards that might cross one’s path. “There’s wildlife up there. I’ve seen bighorn sheep, marmots, deer, and there’s been bears up there before. It’s such a unique event in so many different ways and you just have to respect the mountain.” Despite the dangers, Boileau says it’s the most addictive thing he’s ever done. He relishes the whole experience including “hell week” leading up to the race. They call it hell week because it’s a mental challenge and involves odd sleep schedules, often getting on the mountain at 2:30 a.m. to get set up and start practice rounds at the first sliver of sunlight. After 8:30 a.m. the racing practice is shut down and the road is opened to the public for the day. On Friday night, after a week of early mornings and mechanical work to fine-tune the cars, Downtown Colorado Springs
shuts down Tejon Street and throws a huge party to honor the racers. The racers have Saturday for relaxation before Sunday’s extravaganza. “It’s a cool environment, it’s super rowdy and the Fan Fest is one of the coolest parts about the event,” Boileau says. “Come race day, it’s show time and you have to go lay it all out there and see what happens.” Boileau and his team are confident in their chances to place first this year and it would be even more meaningful to win the race’s 100th running. “I grew up here,” he says. “I’ve always idolized the event as a whole and there have been so many legends in motorsports that have gone up there and competed. If we could go up this year and win the event and set a record in class, it’d be the biggest thing I’d ever done in my career.” Jay McKinney is a Colorado native who recently graduated from Metro State University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He loves spending time outdoors, playing golf and hiking.

hen you’re in the Pikes Peak region this summer, spend some extra time checking out the crazy number of options offered to everyone from families with young children to adults who are looking for fantastic libations and music. With Manitou Springs and Cañon City both celebrating sesquicentennials (150 years), the towns have planned festivities throughout the year. Wherever you set up base camp, an abundance of hiking, biking, four-wheeling, fishing and rafting are available all summer long. We’ve put together a sampling of can’t-miss opportunities in and around Colorado Springs.
COME FOR THE MUSIC
The MeadowGrass Music Festival returns to the Springs this summer May 27-29. World-class musicians share the stage with up-and-coming talent that will blow your mind. The family-friendly weekend offers camping, RV space, teen and toddler activities, a beer festival, and dozens of vendors. As a bonus, all the weekend activities are enjoyed with a close-up view of America’s Mountain, Pikes Peak.
...STAY FOR THE LIBATIONS
The Feast of Saint Arnold says: “Cheers to 10 years.” Yep, the Colorado Springs shindig resumes this summer with plenty of libations, music, food and flat-out fun. “Don’t drink the water. Drink the beer,” says the Patron Saint of Beer. From brewing to hosting live music, Red Leg Brewing’s expansion has elevated the way folks in the Springs enjoy the craft scene. Manitou Brewing Co. offers great beer and food at the base of Pikes Peak. Goat Patch Brewing has truly established itself north of downtown. From adult coloring night to the military care package drive, the brewery has become a hotspot. Bring your pup to Metric Brewing in the Colorado Springs Knob Hill Neighborhood. New beers are often tapped on Wednesdays and Fridays. For those who are ready for a bourbon and a beer, stop in to the Ivywild School, where you can find the ever-solid Bristol Brewing, as well as Axe and the Oak Distillery yes, both in the same old schoolhouse.
GET IN THE BACKCOUNTRY
Jump aboard the Colorado Jeep Tours and plan a full day of four-wheeling and rafting. It’s easy to spend a summer day rocking around the backcountry before jumping into a raft on the state’s famous Arkansas River for a topsy-turvy trip through steep mountain canyons.

one centerpiece of the neighborhood is the C.O.A.T.I. food hall. The modern industrial space on South Tejon Street houses two bars and six restaurants, serving Hawaiian, Korean and Creole eats, as well as an eclectic high-end tasting menu and giant sandwiches named for Colorado Springs landmarks. If you need more choices, the same block also offers a Fat Sully’s Pizza, a Denver Biscuit Company location and Dos Santos Mexican restaurant. And the food court also is adjacent to a lager-focused outpost of Pikes Peak Brewing Company, and across the street is Red Swing Brewhouse.
OLYMPIC MUSEUM
The 60,000-square-foot U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum dedicated to Team USA didn’t get the attention it deserved upon opening during the 2020 COVID lockdown. Now that the museum is fully open, visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy the accessible and interactive displays. Fittingly for a museum partly dedicated to the Paralympics, every exhibit is accessible for everyone, with a groundbreaking design that takes all visitors up an elevator to the top of a ramp winding back down to the lobby. Note that the flagship Team USA Olympic training facility is still closed to the public, so the museum is the best way to bask in the teamwork, camaraderie and inspiration of the Olympic spirit.

SPACE MUSEUM
On your way to Garden of the Gods, don’t miss the museum of the stars. The non-profit Space Foundation Discovery Center opened in 1983, and is dedicated to education and collaboration regarding space exploration. The headquarters building also houses a small but enthralling museum with activities, displays and education for all ages. The centerpiece of the museum is the “Science on a Sphere,” a giant planetary projection that displays models of the earth, sun, moon and other celestial bodies. Other artifacts include space suits and scale model rockets. The museum also hosts summer camps and year-round science workshops, with access to space mission simulation labs that are not typically open to the public.

Sommeliers Turned Winemakers The Storm Cellar elevates Western Slope libations By Kristen Kuchar

T
he story of The Storm Cellar, a vineyard and winery located in Hotchkiss, began during a trip to Sonoma. Jayme Henderson and Steve Steese decided they wanted to learn much more about the Colorado wine scene, and it sparked a new journey for the wine lovers. The two Denver sommeliers came back to Colorado and immediately started researching the state’s wine industry. An Internet search showed a world-class vineyard for sale in the West Elks AVA, an American Viticulture Area in Delta County on the Western Slope. It had a history of producing great wine. Walking the property, the husband-and-wife team immediately saw the potential, and they formed a vision of what the next move on their wine journey would be. The Storm Cellar was founded in 2017, and produces award-winning aromatic white and rosé wines. Since they opened, the winemakers have experienced extremely dry and cold weather, in addition to a global pandemic. But those challenges sparked ingenuity. “That creativity translates to how we make our wine,” Henderson says. The winery has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and Wine Spectator, and has earned medals in numerous competitions, including double-gold medals in the 2019 Colorado Governor’s Cup wine competition, the 2020 American Fine Wine Competition, and the 2020 San Francisco International Wine Competition.
An integral influence in their wine making comes from their sommelier experience and extensive careers in the wine industry. Titles have included wine director, mixologist, restaurant manager and beverage director at establishments that include Barolo Grill, Coohills, Cru Wine Bar, Shanahan’s Steakhouse and Ya Ya’s Euro Bistro. “Being sommeliers made us better winemakers,” Henderson says, who adds they’ve both spent extensive periods tasting for balance and the nuances of wine during their careers. They taste the wines multiple times per week during development. For Henderson, the road to becoming a wine expert came while searching for a teaching job and relocating from Florida to Colorado. She decided to take a job at a restaurant in the meantime, something she had done throughout college. But then she had a thought that changed her entire direction. She loved wine, cooking and hospitality, as well as being a part of people’s celebrations. So, why couldn’t she just make a career out of it? Since then, she’s produced an internationally known cocktail blog, Holly & Flora, and has traveled around the world to explore wine, fondly recalling time spent in Burgundy and Piedmont. As for Steve, who was an art major in college, he took a teaching position in Tuscany in the late 1990s. While there, he fell in love with wine. “A love of wine became

a study of wine and then a career of wine,” he says. The duo are now striving to put the West Elks AVA into the national wine spotlight and hoping to see an increase in Colorado wines on wine lists – pairing local wine with local food. They both feel it’s a fun challenge and are excited to work with restaurants to change any misconceptions surrounding Colorado wine. Fans can keep up with their journey on social media, which shows the story of what’s going on at the vineyard, a deeper look into making wine, and live tastings with sommeliers. Their wine is available at the Hotchkiss tasting room during summer and in various locations across Colorado. Not Dead Yet Talnua Distillery is on a mission to revitalize a nearly extinct style of whiskey By Jay McKinney

May-June 2022
T
he events that led to the opening of Talnua Distillery in Arvada are so serendipitous that a movie producer might want to take note. The main characters would be husband and wife Patrick and Meagan Miller, who were introduced to a historic style of whiskey while on their honeymoon in Ireland. While sitting in a Galway pub watching rugby, the newlyweds were treated to the first batch of single pot still whiskey produced in decades when a representative of a liquor company walked in with a case. The bartender enthusiastically educated Patrick and Meagan about the whiskey’s past, and they were enamored. “He gave us our first taste of it, and we just fell in love with it,” Meagan says. “Every year after that, when we’d vacation, we’d bring home suitcases full of pot still whiskey that we couldn’t get here in America.” The chance introduction to single pot still whiskey became a defining moment in their relationship, and they became determined to help revitalize the nearly extinct style. The couple went back to Ireland about once a year to do research and try to educate themselves, sampling traditional Irish single pot still whiskey. Their passion was undeniable, and they began distilling in their home while keeping their day jobs working in the oil and gas industry. After a company downsize that would’ve forced the couple to move to Texas, Patrick and Meagan started to ponder other career options. The desire to stay in Colorado and freedom to start fresh prompted Patrick to take an immersive two-week course at Breckenridge Distillery.
Meagan and Patrick Miller stop for a photo at Talnua Distillery in Arvada.
Then he landed a job working at Stranahan’s distillery. The experience helped him understand commercial distilling. Meanwhile, he and Meagan continued to perfect their recipe at home. They faced challenges, and their weekends were occupied with trialand-error efforts. They struggled to find unmalted barley, the defining characteristic of the style. And like all great creations, they continued to experiment with the ratio of ingredients and began to learn the intricacies of the distilling process. “The first time we did a triple distillation, it was just distill, distill, distill and we ended up making an oaky vodka. It was terrible,” Meagan jokes. “Patrick probably spent a good work week of hours going through different documents from Trinity College in Ireland to try to discover and find out exactly how the Irish were doing their triple distillation.” The work paid off when another serendipitous encounter happened in November 2016 . A landlord who owned a building in Arvada ended up with distilling equipment when his former tenants closed their distillery and moved on. Not knowing what to do with the equipment, he contacted Stranahan’s to ask if they would be interested in purchasing it. As fate would have it, Patrick was the one who took the call about the equipment, and he knew right away that this could be the perfect opportunity to launch his own distillery. Although he connected his manager with the landlord, Patrick mentioned he was also interested in the equipment and would call when his shift ended. In the back of their minds, Meagan and Patrick had dreamed of opening a distillery but were not ready to roll with their plans. However, it seemed to be a now-or-never type of opportunity and they convinced the landlord to let them use the equipment and space to launch their own distillery, while making him a part-owner. That arrangement helped ease the start-up costs, and they began producing whiskey in 2018. By 2019, Talnua opened to the public and it is now the only distillery in the world outside of Ireland that is dedicated to single pot still whiskey. The name is derived from the Irish-Gaelic words Talamh, meaning land, and Nua, meaning new. It encapsulates their mission to bring the old-world style of distilling to the new land. While they haven’t been back to Ireland in a few years, they are looking forward to going back and continuing to grow the style.
“We’ve made new relationships with other distilleries,” Meagan says. “We have a project that we’re working on with the Boann Distillery (in County Meath), so I think a lot of our time will be spent there, but through this we’ve also made a lot of new friends.”
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS SINGLE POT STILL WHISKEY?
The style dates back hundreds of years and evolved out of a contentious relationship between Great Britain and Ireland. During the 1600s, Ireland was producing more than 80 percent of the world’s whiskey. However, it was not a sovereign nation, and the British imposed a series of taxes on malted barley to blanket tax the production of whiskey and hinder the Irish economy. To avoid the tax, Irish distillers began using raw (unmalted) barley in their recipes. Raw barley was viewed as feed for livestock and thus taxed at a lower rate. Malted barley speeds up the fermentation process and reduces the overall time it takes to distill. The un-malted alternative takes longer to produce. This is the defining feature of the style, which by definition must use at least 30 percent raw barley. The raw barley typically provides more spice than malted barley and it also has grassy and earthy notes. Another characteristic of the style is the whiskey’s silky mouthfeel that makes it extremely smooth to drink. Despite its favorable reputation, the style’s production has ebbed and flowed throughout history for several reasons. After a period of no production, single pot still whiskey was introduced back into the market in 2011. As one of the few distillers that produces single pot still whiskey, the Millers have followed the Irish technical file, which is a document that defines specifications for all Irish Whiskeys and is overseen by the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Despite following this technical file, they have also created a distinct style of their own. “The Irish are sort of married to the Irish technical file and they can’t be as innovative as we can be here,” says Meagan. “We’re setting the standard for how we want to see it be created in America as a category.” Jay McKinney is a Colorado native who recently graduated from Metro State University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He loves spending time outdoors, playing golf and hiking. May-June 2022

Fashion forward
Colorado clothing companies to keep on your radar By Natasha Lovato
Colorado is known for its outstanding brews, rugged fourteeners, and abundant wildlife, but the state is also home to some of the most creative movers and shakers in the fashion industry. Dress up or dress down but dress to impress with these Colorado clothing companies. There is something for everyone among these sultans of style. Some firms donate to nonprofits, are eco-friendly, women owned, person-of-color owned, or are completely Colorado-centric.

ONNO T-SHIRT COMPANY
Akinz Owner Suzanne Akin seeks to encourage others to live a life they enjoy. Whether it is snowboarding, mountain biking, or kicking back with great friends, Akinz aims to inspire an active lifestyle. On top of that, Akinz gives back to ordinary people trying to accomplish extraordinary things through the Find Your Wings Foundation, in which a portion of every purchase goes toward athletes and artists. “We design and make the majority of our products right in our Fort Collins workshop,” Akin said. Akinz also uses laser engravings for many of their designs, and Akin shared that she loves collaborating with people to create custom merch for their businesses, breweries and more. Be sure to celebrate Akinz’s 10-year anniversary at their downtown Fort Collins flagship store in August, and stay tuned on their Facebook and Instagram for upcoming anniversary giveaways.
ONNO makes t-shirts from sustainable fibers like hemp, pima cotton and organic cotton. The family-owned group also buys carbon offsets to help balance out the transportation of their products. Not only are these t-shirts comfortable, and sustainable, but they are local too. Jack Kanefield, ONNO owner, took his Boulder roots even deeper when he plotted ONNO’s homebase right at the base of the flatirons. “It is an inspiring place and community to be a part of, we are grateful to call it home,” Kanefield said.
YO COLORADO
Inspired by the outdoor Colorado lifestyle, Yo Colorado offers something for skiers, mountain bikers, kayakers, and brewery enthusiasts alike. The retro flare of Yo Colorado highlights the Colorado culture that is so adored.

DONA FORTA CREATE GOOD CO.
Maggie Naffziger started the Create Good Co. with one strong idea known as The Boyfriend Skirt, a skirt repurposed from a large button up shirt. With that in mind, she deployed her nonprofit experience, her business concept and she ran with it. Now in Fort Collins, Create Good Co. is the home of The Boyfriend Skirt as well as a number of creatively repurposed articles of clothing for men, women, and their four-legged friends. Think cropped jackets, acid washed flannels, and even dog collars. Plus, 5 percent of every sale goes to U.S. classrooms with DonorsChoose.com.
In Denver’s Berkeley neighborhood sits a clothing store all about women’s empowerment called Dona Forta. Liana Hill started her label with the intent of creating high-quality clothing for women. “I believe that strong, confident women are more interested in developing their personal style than following a trend. They invest in well-designed, high-quality clothing that aligns with their values. They know who they are, and their style is born out of their sense of self,” Hill said. Dona Forta carries clothing for any sort of occasion from overalls to swimwear that embodies the idea of casual chicness.

FALSE EGO
False Ego takes casual wear to a new level by placing apparel and sustainable efforts hand in hand. No matter what ends up in your False Ego shopping cart, whether it’s sweatshorts, sweatshirts or joggers, a tree is planted with every purchase. Owner Jevon Taylor pledged to assist the reforestation efforts with Tree Nation in the Unsambara Biodiversity Conservation in Tanzania, and every apparel purchase equates to one tree planted to help the ongoing battle with deforestation. On top of that, Taylor committed to utilizing more sustainable materials such as pima cotton, and producing the products in a facility powered by wind energy. He is also proud to represent his brand as a person of color. “Sustainability goes beyond just maintaining Earth’s resources, it’s how do you maintain talent in your community, how do you create a ladder for minorities to climb within your community? That’s also sustainability,” Taylor points out.

COLORADICAL
Coloradical is all about one thing, and that is loving this state. Supplying clothing for men, women, babies, and anybody in between, Coloradical clothing can be purchased at their flagship store on East Colfax or at retailers across the state. After years designing shirts, Adam Sikorski started Coloradical in 2010. To this day, he still does all the designing and tie-dye work himself. “I really like that the brand allows me to do a diverse range of activities,” Sikorski said. “It’s very important to me to keep a balance of creating art, doing light business, and keeping up with a lifestyle of snowboarding, biking, hiking and backpacking around the state.”

Cannabis etiquette: What’s changed since legalization, and what hasn’t? By John Garvey
© Brad / Adobe Stock
40 ThirstColorado.com
May-June 2022
W
e’re coming up on 10 years of the passage of Amendment 64, which (in case you’ve been in a deep sleep) legalized cannabis in Colorado. I remember feeling like some scrawny kid had popped the playground bully in the nose and made him cry. But the cannabis industry has grown up. Attitudes about cannabis use and drug policy have matured. Roughly two-thirds of Americans now support legalization — a drastic increase over the last two decades. And 70 percent of U.S. adults even find it morally acceptable. Hell’s bells! A paradox of destigmatization is that cannabis etiquette is more important now than ever. There are three reasons we need to have a Mr. Rogers talk about weed etiquette. First, etiquette, like ethics, sometimes transcends legal status. But legal status, stigma, and etiquette influence one another. Ergo, weed etiquette has changed unevenly across the country, but it has changed. Additionally, a large number of abstainers are curious about trying cannabis. Some points of etiquette are timeless, so the basics still matter. And finally, the growing prevalence of alternative methods of consumption — vaping, edibles and beverages — has its own implications.
LEGALITY AND SAFETY • Discretion. The channel between neuroticism and
blithe disregard isn’t too hard to navigate if you recognize that it varies from state to state. Cannabis is still illegal in a lot of places. It is rude to behave in a way that gives those around you reasonable grounds to fear harassment, prosecution, or just social awkwardness. • Smoking indoors. You may consider smoking the occasional doob inside if you don’t share walls or ventilation with people who would possibly object. But I think it’s generally less acceptable than it was when smoking cannabis was a crime. Most of the country has legalized or decriminalized personal use. Go outside.
BEING GENTEEL TOWARD PARTAKERS • Transparency and non-dumbassery. Those who
wish to partake have the right to accurate information. Getting someone stoned to blazes who only wishes to get casually high because you understated the strength of a cannabis product isn’t cool. This is especially important with edibles. Hospitality and non-dumbassery. Be welcoming. If • you’re experienced enough to be a competent “guide,” do that. Try not to get a first-timer stoned to blazes. Generosity. The best cannabis flower and edibles are • actually very cheap if you compare them to alcohol and other drugs in terms of dollars to intoxication. A gram of General Tso’s Cookies, costing less than $20 after tax, will get “some people” delightedly high at least 10 times. A good cup of coffee these days can easily cost $4 or more. Do the math. I won’t cheapen relationships by implying they’re justified by their economic value, but since we’re on the
topic of stinginess, it’s worth mentioning. Getting high with your neighbors can authentically deepen relationships. And healthy relationships of any kind benefit us both spiritually and materially. • Germs. We have new norms now because of COVID-19, which makes sharing more delicate and complicated. I don’t have any edicts for you, but you need to read the room more carefully before passing a pipe around or assuming permission. Etc. Don’t hog, mooch excessively, slobber, or turn into • a zombie (if it can be helped).
BEING GENTEEL AMONG ABSTAINERS • Deference. There remain, and always will remain,
legitimate reasons for people to object to cannabis use when it’s indiscreet, annoying or risky. Unless people are being hostile or shrill, don’t bitch about it. • Social inclusiveness. Don’t inadvertently make people who choose to abstain feel forgotten or ostracized. If you’re in a mixed crowd, be thoughtful, inclusive and conversational.
CIVIC VIRTUE • Don’t start a forest fire. It is bad manners to start forest
fires. Yes, I’ve smoked weed in the woods. I’m just making a point about safety because forest fires have become an annual crisis. High-quality vaporizers are far cheaper and easier to come by than they were 10 years ago. If you’re camping or hiking under drought conditions, vaping is a worry-free proposition. Smoke is smoke. You may feel differently about • tobacco smoke and weed smoke. Not everyone has to agree. • ... ditto vapor. Health considerations aside, the etiquette of vaping isn’t substantively different than smoking etiquette. In • public. Don’t be rude to employees or security guards who are doing their job by enforcing a venue’s policies. Don’t get high where kids play. And don’t blow smoke in my dog’s face. I could go on, but it would get insulting.
BE AN AMAZING PERSON!
A good rule in life is to try never to be the reason “they” make a new rule, whatever that may be and whoever “they” may be. Good weed etiquette preserves and strengthens relationships. Be aware and be kind. It will come back to you.
John Garvey is the Chief Storytelling Officer at Garvington Creative, bringing together business impact and belly laughs through story-driven marketing. If you meet his parents, please don’t tell them how much he knows about weed. GarvingtonCreative.com May-June 2022
