A Whole New

Ball Game A Look Inside the Chicago Cubs New Spring Training Facility The new crown jewel of spring training baseball facilities in Arizona is rising from a former City of Mesa golf course with plans to host professional baseball’s storied Chicago Cubs franchise starting next spring. The Chicago Cubs training facility, when finished, will feature a 15,000 seat ballpark reminiscent of historic Wrigley Field; a state-of-the-art team clubhouse facility; a cluster of top-notch baseball practice fields; pristine youth soccer fields and a sparkling public lake that will boast an exciting new design. Passers-by the project site at the corner of 8th Street and Dobson Road in Mesa are treated to a daily show of construction progress, as hundreds of workers muscle steel, concrete and other building materials into the shape of a facility that will be the best in Arizona’s Cactus League. Mesa voters get the credit for the project, approving $84 By Robert Johnson million in bonds at the ballot box in November, 2010. They Hunt Construction Group also gave the nod to $15 million in related infrastructure improvements to upgrade the park, streets, and water lines among other things to make the project work. Of course, it wasn’t that long ago that the site was the home to Riverview Golf Course, famous for its large trees and its convenient location in the southeast corner of the region’s Loop 101/Loop 202 freeway interchange. It was the location and the room to grow the Chicago Cubs brand that attracted the City and team ownership to the site. Without a doubt, And thanks to the efforts of architect Populous and construction manager Hunt Construction Group, it is Chicago Cubs easy to see how the project will keep the area busy for players, spring decades to come. training fans, and With each new day of hammering, drilling and smoothing of concrete, the vision of the Cubs future Mesa residents are training home is coming closer to life. in for a treat The ballpark’s field sunk into the dirt is outlined by concrete walls that will set the stage for exciting home runs. The grass berm, a signature feature of Arizona’s spring training ballparks, starts high in right field and slopes down slightly as it makes its way to the left field corner. The dugouts are outlined and so are the bullpens. The wall behind home plate will feature a brick inlay reminding fans of the team’s historic ballpark in the Windy City. The wall is there. The bricks are on their way. The roof structure also is designed to pay compliment to the team’s home field heritage as will the expansive left field building planned to host party decks above a clubhouse and other facilities. Can you say Wrigleyville rooftops? The inspiration is obvious. Every piece of the project is now under construction. Workers, a large number of which are Mesa residents, are building six days a week with an eye toward completing the project this fall. Without a doubt, Chicago Cubs players, spring training fans, and Mesa residents are in for a treat when the facilities open for baseball, soccer, fishing and fun in the sun early next year!

Hohokams Welcome

Big Ho Mike Whalen Mesa HoHoKams

Welcome to Mesa HoHoKam’s Chicago Cubs Spring Training. This year is different than the others and we all know why. This March will culminate more than 30 years of baseball here on North Center Street. It’s poised to be a season of reflection, celebration and anticipation for what’s to come. We tried to capture the history and the magic that happens here on the field, throughout the concourse and in the stands for our beloved fans offering you a series of three Collector’s Edition programs reflecting the past, present and future of spring training in Mesa. We hope you agree there is a lot to be excited about as the Chicago Cubs get ready for their last season at HoHoKam Stadium and gear up for their new confines just down the road across from Mesa Riverview. That ‘Special Events Committee’ formed so many years ago is still going strong and we are looking forward to continuing the legacy of hosting Major League Baseball in Mesa. Since the first

game at the old Rendezvous Ballpark, to today, we have fond memories of working side by side with our friends and colleagues to help make spring training in Mesa a time for great memories for baseball fans of all ages. Earlier this year, the Mesa HoHoKams began talks about continuing our valued service at the new Cubs stadium in 2014. As you see our members around the stadium this March, know that our familiar red shirts, white straw hats and smiles will be part of the fabric next season for legions of future Cubs fans to come. We welcome back Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein and his dynamic executive team. There are so many new faces to see on the ball field this month! We anticipate some incredible action out there as our much-admired heavy hitters and the new crop of top prospects warm up for the 2013 season. We have highlighted many of these familiar and new players in the program so you can see what

everyone is talking about. We are thrilled to see the Ricketts’ continue to build a winning team! This is also a good time to remind you that your attendance at Spring Training games helps the Mesa HoHoKams support local youth sports activities and area charities. We are so glad you are here once again to cheer on the Cubs and helping us continue our mission of service. Have a great day at the ballpark and as always remember “GO CUBS GO”! DECADES OF SPRING TRAINING, GENERATIONS OF COMMUNITY GIVING More than 60 years ago, a handful of public-spirited citizens created an organization to bring Major League Baseball to Mesa to train and prepare for the upcoming season. They called themselves the HoHoKams. Those founders came from many professions including banking, the legal profession, ranching, journalism, and retail business. They all gave their professional talents to create Spring

Training in Mesa, and to support youth sports in the Mesa area, just like they do today. It was the beloved Chicago Cubs that made Mesa a true Spring Training town with their arrival in 1952. Through the years, Cubs’ fans continue to be a phenomenon. For nearly three decades they have led the Cactus League in attendance and continue to break their home attendance record year over year. Because of this outstanding support,

dozens of Mesa and East Valley youth charities have received many thousands of dollars annually. In 2012, the HoHoKam Foundation provided more than $200,000 in grants to dozens of youth sports organizations throughout Mesa including the East Valley YMCA and Boys & Girls Club of the East Valley. They also support numerous junior-high and high-school athletic programs throughout Mesa through much-needed funds and volunteer service. Monies raised by the HoHoKams and Spring Training are also dedicated for annual stadium improvements. Generations of HoHoKams have

donned the iconic red shirt and displayed the treasured bolo tie with honor and pride. Today, the HoHoKams are comprised of nearly 200 community leaders who volunteer their time just like their founders to ensure your Spring Training experience in Mesa is enjoyable. By any measure the HoHoKams are an exceptionally successful volunteer organization. Each member knows what job needs to be done, when it needs to be done and how to do it. Each member is there for love of the organization, love of Mesa, love of baseball, and love of the Cubs. MesaHohokams.com

The Future’s So

Bright

Jorge Soler when he was playing for Peoria vs. Kane County on September 3, 2012.

Reasons For Cubs Fans To Hope

You’re attending Cubs spring training because you love the team. That love went unrequited in 2012, when they posted a 101-loss season, the club’s worst in 46 years. Their only major acquisition was pitcher Al Yellon Edwin Jackson, who signed a four-year deal. He’s good, but certainly not anyone who, by himself, can vault the Cubs back into contention. If you can be patient for just a little bit longer, Cubs

1

Javier Baez was the last No. 1 draft choice under former general manager Jim Hendry. Nevertheless, Theo & Co. are very high on this shortstop’s future. Baez has rocketed through the system; last year he hit .333/.383/.596 with 12 home runs in just 57 games at Low-A Peoria; he was promoted to High-A Daytona and hit four more home runs in only 80 at-bats there. Baez has what many baseball people call “swagger”; currently a shortstop, he could eventually wind up playing second base, third base or even the outfield. He turned 20 in December.

16

• 2 0 1 3 C H I CAGO CUBS

2

President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein and General Manager Jed Hoyer have placed in the system quite a number of players who could be not just major league players, but impact stars, within the next two or three years. As a Cubs fan, you’ve waited 104 years for a World Series title. What’s another two or three? Here are 10 players who should be in uniform at Wrigley Field by 2015, if not sooner. You’ll probably see several of these players in action this spring in Mesa.

Albert Almora was the Cubs’ No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft and signed quickly. He then posted a .321/.331/.464 mark in 140 at-bats split between the Cubs’ rookie league team at Mesa and their short-season squad at Boise. Almora, who won’t turn 19 until April, is seen as a possibility at all three outfield positions (though he played exclusively center field last year) and should begin the season at the Cubs’ new Low-A Midwest League affiliate at Kane County, located just 45 miles west of downtown Chicago.

3

Jorge Soler was signed in July 2012, just before Major League Baseball changed the rules on international signings; the Cubs outbid several other teams for the services of the Cuban free agent. He’s signed to a nine-year, $30 million contract, which could be quite a bargain if Soler turns out to be anything close to what his countryman, Yoenis Cespedes, has been for the Athletics. Soler is quite young – he just turned 21 – and quite raw in his ability. In addition to learning baseball, he’s adjusting to living in the United States. He hit

Th e Fu t u r e ’ s S o B r i gh t .299/.369/.463 with five home runs in 134 at-bats in his first minor-league season; several of those homers were described as monster shots. He’ll likely begin this year at High-A Daytona.

4

Arodys Vizcaino was acquired from the Braves last July as part of the deal that sent Paul Maholm to Atlanta. He was dealt to Atlanta by the Yankees in 2009; he pitched in 17 games for the Braves in 2011 and then had Tommy John surgery. Theo and Jed took a calculated risk with the hard-throwing righthander; recovery chances from TJ surgery are excellent, and sometimes pitchers throw even harder afterward. Vizcaino just turned 22 last November, so the Cubs will bring him along slowly. He could wind up as either a rotation starter or closer. He’ll likely start 2013 at Triple-A Iowa.

5

Kyuji Fujikawa is the Cubs’ newest Japanese import. Don’t worry – he didn’t cost the team nearly as much as Kosuke Fukudome, on whom the Cubs lavished a four-year, $48 million deal only to get middling production. Fujikawa played for Japan in both the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics and has a 1.80 career ERA in NPB, the Japanese major leagues. He has excellent control, issuing just 192 walks in 644 innings in Japan, with 892 strikeouts. The Cubs signed him to a reasonably priced two-year, $9.5 million contract with a third-year option. At 32, he’ll back up Carlos Marmol at closer this year (or even replace him if Marmol has more of his memorable meltdowns), and has a chance to succeed him in 2014 if Marmol is allowed to leave as a free agent.

18

6

Brett Jackson was the Cubs’ No. 1 draft selection in 2009 out of the University of California. He’s made solid progress through the Cubs’ system, with one bit of alarm – his strikeout total has increased each year. When he finally made it to the Cubs last August, he played plus defense in center field, drew a fair number of walks and hit four home runs in 120 at-bats – but also struck out in nearly half those at-bats, 59 times. If Jackson can cut down on the K’s, he could be a center-field fixture at Wrigley Field for years to come. He’s got a shot at winning the job this spring, but is likely to start the year at Triple-A Iowa.

by hitting a home run off top Pirates prospect Gerrit Cole. Ha might not project as a major-league starter, but at 22 and likely ticketed for Triple-A Iowa, he could hit the big leagues as a useful fourth outfielder.

7

9

8

10

Christian Villanueva is just 21, and has come into the Cubs organization (as part of the deal that sent Ryan Dempster to the Rangers last July) at a propitious time – the team desperately is seeking a longterm third-base replacement for the departed Aramis Ramirez. If Villanueva can continue to improve on his power numbers – he’s got 33 minor-league home runs in 1138 at-bats – he might become that replacement in a couple of years. He plays excellent defense, and will probably start this season at either High-A Daytona or Double-A Tennessee.

Jae-Hoon Ha might not be someone you’d expect to see on a list like this. His .279/.322/.401 line is just good, not great. He doesn’t have much power, nor does he steal many bases. But the Korean outfielder plays plus defense, and something in his game caught the eye of major-league scouts, because he was selected to play in the 2012 Futures Game, where he caught even more eyes

Logan Watkins turned 23 last August. He’s a second baseman similar in stature and defensive ability to current Cub starter Darwin Barney, and improved his offense in 2012 by drawing 76 walks and posting a .383 OBP to go along with 20 doubles, 11 triples and nine home runs and was named the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year. He hasn’t played above Double-A after being the Cubs’ 21st-round choice in the 2008 draft; even so, he could very well see major-league time in 2013. Dan Vogelbach has monstrous power; his career minor-league line of .320/.406/.632 would get him MVP consideration if he could replicate it at the major-league level. He’s hit 18 home runs in just 269 at-bats in two years in the Cubs system. He’s a long way from the big leagues at age 20, and there’s another issue: his size. Generously listed at 6-0, 250, Vogelbach might be heavier than that, and really doesn’t have a defensive position, not even first base. He’s got two options: either slim down a bit, or hope the National League adopts the designated hitter rule; he seems perfectly suited to be a DH. Prospects are just that, prospects; not all of these players will make the major leagues, much less become stars. Nevertheless, for the first time in many years, the Cubs have a legitimate flow of talent heading toward Chicago and possible stardom, and beyond that, possible winning seasons in the team’s future.

Mesa Has A Long-Standing Love Affair With Cactus League Baseball

By

42

There’s a scratchy old photograph in a self-published book about old Rendezvous Park in Mesa (authored by former groundskeeper and lifelong baseball man Lester “Truck” Dayton), where the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A’s played Cactus League home games from 1952-1976. In the photograph major league slugger Hank Aaron is following through on Ch arlie Vascellaro a home run swing in the last exhibition game of the 1970 spring- training season on April 3rd between the visiting Atlanta Braves and the home-team A’s. The Braves were not a member of the six-team Cactus League at the time and were in Arizona trying to get in a final few exhibition games on the way to Opening Day in San Diego, because frequent rain in Florida had washed out much of the Grapefruit League season.

The photo captures a unique moment in both the history of the Cactus League and baseball in Mesa; Hank Aaron in his prime, well on his way to breaking Babe Ruth’s alltime home run record (which would happen almost exactly four years later), making a rare appearance in town. Aaron would later return to spend the last two spring training seasons of his legendary career with the Milwaukee Brewers in Sun City in 1975-1976. Most local baseball fans are well aware of the Cubs long-standing spring training history at Rendezvous Park and Hohokam Parks old and new, as well as the Oakland A’s calling both parks home from 1966 to 1978. But the league’s history is also

peppered with occasional barnstorming visits from non-Cactus League teams. The St. Louis Cardinals squared off against the Cubs for one game at Rendezvous Park on March 16, 1954; Stan “The Man” Musial connected for a pair of two ground-rule doubles, one that bounced over the fence and the other into an overflow crowd of 4,221 some of whom had gathered on the field (the ballpark’s capacity at the time was 3,000). The Cubs arrived at Rendezvous Park in the spring of 1952, relocating from Catalina Island where the team had conducted spring training for the past 30 years on former Cubs’ owner William Wrigley Jr.’s

own island paradise, 25 miles off the Los Angeles coast. During the spring of 1951 the Cubs came to Phoenix for a pair of exhibition games with the New York Yankees, who had temporarily borrowed the New York Giants’ Phoenix Municipal Stadium for the spring season. While in town, members of the Cubs management GO CUBS! •

F r o m R e n d e z v o us t o R i v e r v i e w met with Mesa rancher and businessman Dwight Patterson at the Wrigley family’s own Arizona Biltmore Hotel. Patterson had been lobbying to bring a big league team to Rendezvous Park, to generate revenue for promotion of the city and to buy equipment for local little league baseball teams. After bringing the Cubs brass out to see Rendezvous Park, Patterson closed the deal and on April 3, 1951 the front page of the Mesa Tribune ran a large headline proclaiming: “The Chicago Cubs Choose Rendezvous Park for their Spring Training in 1952.” The following spring the Cubs arrived in town with new manager Phil Cavaretta, who had taken over a struggling club midwaythrough the 1951 season that eventually finished dead last in the National League with a 62-92 record. Among Cavaretta’s charges was pitching coach Charley Root, a former Cubs hurler who infamously threw the pitch Babe Ruth hit for his “called shot,” in the 1932 World Series. The Cubs exhibition schedule that first season included six home games at Rendezvous Park against the Cleveland Indians, New York Giants, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates as well as four road games against the Giants at their spring headquarters in

Phoenix and two games against the Indians in Tucson. The Giants and Indians had relocated to Arizona for spring training together in 1947 laying the groundwork for what would eventually become the Cactus League. The Chicago White Sox and the Pirates made brief pit stops for single-games on the way back east from their respective training camps in El Centro and San Bernardino, California. The 1952 Cubs improved by 15 games in Cavaretta’s first season with a 77-77 record which was still not good enough to crack the first division, finishing fifth in the National League. Veteran outfielder Hank Sauer led the National League with 37 Home runs and 121 RBI, capturing the league’s MVP award. With the Cubs firmly committed to returning to Mesa each spring, the big news at Rendezvous Park in 1953 was the addition of a $20,000 grandstand paid for by Cubs owner Phillip K. Wrigley, in exchange for the city of Mesa paying for construction of a new clubhouse on the third base side. The grandstand’s exterior Rendezvous Park label and water-tank towers looming beyond the outfield would become the signature image associated with the ballpark. The Cubs 1953 exhibition schedule included five games against the cross-town rival White Sox and a pair of games with the St. Louis Browns, making the trip from their spring training grounds in Bakersfield, California. The following season, the Browns would move to Baltimore and become the Orioles, setting up spring camp in Yuma, AZ. When the Orioles became the fourth

Baseball fans are nothing if not nostalgic and the Cactus League’s history is constantly being revisited in the form of stories like this one and interactive experiences like Play Ball! The Cactus League Experience, a traveling exhibit in its fifth season, created by the Mesa Historical Museum with installations at various locales including, the Mesa Historical Museum’s Downtown Campus throughout April; Tempe’s Arizona Historical Society Museum through April 14; and the Goodyear Ballpark during the Cactus League season as well as a Scottsdale exhibit at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library nearby Scottsdale Stadium through March. …and makeshift museums popping up in bars and restaurants across the Valley featured on the Cactus League Legacy Trail…

Although the Cubs suffered through another subpar season in 1953, finishing in seventh place with a 65-89 record, the team made two memorable mid-season acquisitions: trading a handful of players to Pittsburgh for Hall of Fame slugger Ralph Kiner, and buying the rights to sign 22-year-old shortstop Ernie Banks from the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League for same price ($20,000) as

the Rendezvous Park Grandstand. Banks made his big-league debut on September 17 and appeared in just 10 games in the 1953 regular season, hitting the first two of his 512 career home runs with a .314 batting average in 35 at-bats. Banks reported to his first spring training with the Cubs at Rendezvous Park in 1954 and was promptly plunked in the head during an intra-squad game missing the first four games on the exhibition schedule but gained the starting shortstop position by Opening Day and played every game of the regular season finishing second to St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Wally Moon in Rookie of the Year voting. Banks would also play in every game on the schedule in 1955 and become

the most popular player at Rendezvous Park in the decade to follow, garnering back-to-back NL MVP awards in 1958 and 1959. The Cubs remained mired in mediocrity finishing no better than fifth in the eight-team National League during the team’s 14-year, springtraining run at Rendezvous Park, but fans were treated to a steady procession of some of the team’s all-time greats during the period: Outfielder Billy Williams made his big-league debut with the Cubs in 1959 and also played in a handful of games in 1960 but was still eligible to win the Rookie of the Year award in 1961 when he hit 25 home runs with 86 RBI and a .278 batting average. Recently elected Hall of Famer, Ron Santo broke in to the big leagues in 1960 and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting. Santo would make his first of nine All-Star game appearances in 1963. Pitcher Ferguson Jenkins was traded to the Cubs from the Philadelphia Phillies in April of 1966 for veteran pitchers Bob Buhl and Larry Jackson and one year later began a streak of six consecutive seasons with at least 20 victories from 1967-1972, leading the National League with 24 wins in 1971. Jenkins racked up 167 wins in eight seasons with the Cubs. The Cubs left Rendezvous Park and the Cactus League altogether relocating to Long Beach, California for the spring of 1966 and when the team returned in 1967, it took up spring residence at Scottsdale Stadium. For three spring seasons, with the exception of a few games played by the Giants, Indians and L.A. Dodgers, Rendezvous Park was devoid of Cactus League activity. Rendezvous Park sat empty with no team to host until Dwight Patterson lured Charlie O. Finley and his Oakland A’s to Mesa in 1969. The A’s had relocated to Oakland from Kansas City the previous season and had continued to utilize the team’s former spring training facility in Bradenton, Florida. The 1968 Athletics finished in 6th place in the 10-team American League with an 82-80 record but were on the brink of greatness with a roster that included future Hall of Famers like outfielder Reggie Jackson, and pitchers Jim “Catfish” Hunter and Rollie Fingers. the time between. While working on a story about the lost ballparks of the Cactus League I spoke with Dwight Patterson who said: “It was a nice ballpark when we had it, but the new one is going to be a dandy. It [old Hohokam] was satisfactory until everybody else started getting the new ones. We didn’t have any standing room or grass area for the overflow,” said Patterson. I also spoke with the late Robert Brinton, who, like his predecessor Patterson was instrumental in keeping the Cubs and Cactus League baseball in Mesa. “It goes in cycles,” said Brinton. “In 1979, it [HoHokam] was the newest and best park in the Cactus League and then we became the oldest. Now we’ll be the newest and the best again.” In a similar scenario just two years ago, City of Mesa officials, local businesses, the Mesa HoHokams, private citizens, and the Chicago Cubs impressed upon local voters to approve a ballot measure ensuring that the Cubs and Cactus League baseball’s presence would continue for at least another 30 years. Funding was approved for the brand new spring training facility scheduled to open in 2014 adjacent to a newly-sculpted Riverview Park (pictured below). And so with that same old melancholy feeling, after 34 years at the intersection of Brown Road and Center Street, Cubs fans in Mesa will be ushering out the old and welcoming the new.

Bruce Sutter

former New York Yankees outfielder Hank Bauer and “Joltin’ Joe” DiMaggio, served as the team’s outfield and hitting instructor. In the first year of the newly formatted divisional play, the Athletics finished second in the AL West, with an 88-74 record nine games behind the Minnesota Twins. The Athletics improved by one game in 1970 again finishing second to the Twins, but ran off a streak of five consecutive first-place finishes from 1971-1975 including three straight World Series championships from 1972-1974, becoming the first Cactus League team to win the Series since the 1954 New York Giants. No team has won three World Series in a row since. By the mid-70s, a dilapidated Rendezvous Park had run its course. In order to keep spring training in Mesa, the city razed the old stadium in 1976 and built the first HoHoKam Park in 1977. The A’s remained in Mesa at Hohokam Park through the spring of 1978 but were replaced by the Cubs who came back to Mesa in 1979 after 12 years at Scottsdale Stadium. The Cubs return to Mesa was and has been wildly successful, the team and its ballparks have been among the Cactus League’s leaders in attendance year in and year out. My own spring training experiences began with the Cubs at the original HoHokam Park in 1979, located within walking distance of Kino Jr. High school that I attended in ninth grade, which was either a really good thing or a really bad thing depending on whether you were one of my classmates or teachers. In the good old hooky-playing days of my baseball-crazed youth we marveled at the close proximity between us fans and the players. We used to disembark from the school bus and walk right over to HoHokam Park as well as the practice fields at Fitch Park. I used to take photographs with an old Kodak instamatic camera, drop off the film at the one-hour developing booth and bring them back to be autographed the next day. The 1979 Cubs were a very accommodating group. I still have the autographed photos of Dave Kingman, Bill Buckner, Bruce Sutter, Larry Bittner, Ivan Dejesus and Billy Williams (who was a first-base coach by then) in my collection. I was surprised to hear of the original Hohokam Park’s demise in 1996, when it was razed to make way for its second incarnation. It just didn’t seem that old to me but the landscape of the Cactus League had changed dramatically during

This Season Cubs 2013 Preview

By

If you think that Cubs fans have little to cheer about going into the 2013 season, think again. Even though the team lost 101 games last season, there were Miriam Romain still a few things to cheer about, and those things will continue into the 2013 season. One of the biggest stories of 2012 was Darwin Barney’s

errorless streak at second base, which was finally broken after 141 games. He surpassed Ryne Sandberg, who had a streak that lasted 123 games over two seasons, which was a team record at the time. Barney’s feat was accomplished in one season. He ended up tied with Placido Polanco of the Detroit Tigers for the most errorless games in one season. The feat earned him a Gold Glove. The question will be, can he do that again? It’s hard to know, but worth keeping an eye on him.

Returning bullpen pitchers include Marmol, who will once again be the team closer with Russell and Camp as set-up men. Camp signed a oneyear contract early in the winter, and Russell avoided arbitration by signing a one-year contract in January. He and Camp were relied on heavily last season. It is hoped that if the Cubs need to rely on the bullpen, Jackson can help take some of the pressure off Russell and Camp. The Cubs will have more depth to call upon in their minor league system with the return of veteran pitcher Dontrelle Willis, who was signed to a minor league contract with no invitation to spring training.

But the young Castro still needs to learn discipline at the plate and in the field, and focus more on the game. The question really remains whether Ian Stewart, who had wrist surgery in July, can return to third base. The Cubs will be relying on him to be healthy. He played in only 55 games last year before his season ending surgery. He signed a one year deal with the Cubs in December.

Anthony Rizzo: to stay with the team in spring training. Soriano, 37, has two years left on his current contract. Center field will belong to David DeJesus. DeJesus spent last year mainly in right field, though he did play 55 games in center, so it is not new territory for him. The change comes as the Cubs added Nate Schierholtz, who signed a one-year contract with the team, and the addition of Scott Hairston. Look for Schierholtz to play against right-handed pitchers and Hairston to play against left-handed pitchers. This will leave Brett Jackson, a young prospect who was called up last season probably on his way back to Triple-A Iowa. While he has a lot to learn, he was effective in center field but needs

Alfonso Soriano’s walkoff hit lifts up the team last August

The outfield will have a little different configuration from last year. Alfonso Soriano is coming off one of his best years with the Cubs. While his knees aren’t getting any better, fans will put pressure on him, as he puts pressure on himself, to help the Cubs both in the field and at the plate. Hopefully he has the stamina for the hustle he showed last season. If he lacks that hustle, expect fans to once again turn on him, calling him lazy, though he is anything but. According to many sources, Soriano is one of the hardest working members of the team. As an added point for his dedication to the team, Soriano turned down an invitation from Moises Alou to be a member of the Dominican Republic team during the World Baseball Classic, citing the need

to learn more discipline at the plate. Spring training should help him gain more composure at the plate, and a chance to show off an overhauled swing. He will be fighting in spring training to be on the Opening Day roster. Another new face fans will want to familiarize themselves with is Japanese pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa who spent 12 years pitching for the Hanshin Tigers. He signed a twoyear deal and hopes to make a big impact in the bullpen. The bottom line is that with all the moves made during the winter, the 2013 Cubs should be a better team than last season. Why? They have more pitching and outfield depth, and many young players. That is all well and good as long as the players can produce both offensively and defensively.

Already a Qualified Clubhouse Leader Anthony Rizzo is cool, calm and collected when asked about probably becoming the clubhouse leader the Cubs need. Only 23 years old, Rizzo has stepped into a role usually occupied by veteran players. When asked about it, he smiles and says he’s doing what he has to do for the team. And what he has done for the team at first base since being brought up last season has some calling him one of the greatest first basemen the Cubs have ever seen. Rizzo’s climb to the majors has not been easy. The Boston Red Sox drafted him out of high school in the sixth round of the 2007 draft. In 2008 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which was successfully treated with chemotherapy. He founded the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation after learning through his own experience that cancer is not only hard on the patient, but also the family. In 2010, Rizzo was traded to the San Diego Padres. He was acquired by the Cubs in January 2012, already a known entity to General Manager Jed Hoyer who had drafted him while with the Red Sox. Coming up mid season, he quickly caught the eye of Cubs fans and established himself as the Cubs first baseman, and a positive influence in the clubhouse. Ask him what his reaction was the first time he stepped into Wrigley Field and his face lights up with a big grin. He even admits he likes playing day games at Wrigley, noting that it makes baseball more like a 9-to-5 job where you can go home and have time with your family after work. This spring, Rizzo will take some time off from the Cubs to play for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic. While he grew up in Florida, he qualifies because of his background. And when asked how his Italian is, he readily admits he doesn’t know how to speak the language. But that doesn’t matter and he is looking forward to representing Italy, then getting back to business and the coming season with the Cubs.

One to Grown On The Cubs are working to build a foundation for sustained success, and that foundation got a lot stronger in 2012— despite what you saw at Wrigley Field When Cubs baseball president Theo Epstein met with reporters after the season, he joked about wanting to move quickly to new business so no one would mention the 2012 campaign. And who could blame him?

By Bruce Miles The Daily Herald Not even the most optimistic Cubs fan or the front office itself was trying to put a positive spin on the results at the major league level in 2012. The Cubs’ 61-101 record marked the first season of at least 100 losses since the 1966 club dropped 103 games. In the top level of professional sports, teams are judged by the win-loss record, and judgment was understandably harsh at Wrigley. But as bad as the results were, the organization as a whole made big strides this year. The Cubs underwent some front office changes as the first season of the Epstein-Hoyer administration came to a close, and there were some important developments at the lower levels the team hopes will pay off in the future. As Epstein put it, he believes the Cubs grew the core of potential impact players in the system—both at the major and minor league levels. And that’s a start. It’s also important to remember that Epstein was talking on the eve of his one-year anniversary with the Cubs. “I don’t think a celebration is in order,” he said with a smile. “I have a lot

First Draft

Breaking down the new CBA For the most part, the free-agent market will look pretty much like it always has this winter. Next summer’s amateur draft will look similar too. The biggest difference under Major League Baseball’s new collective bargaining agreement is that free agency and the draft are no longer tied to each other as closely as they have been in the past. Forget the terms “Type A” and “Type B” free agents, and remember the term “qualifying offer.” The bottom line is the big-name free agents are going to get their big money—as they always do. However, with the elimination of Type A and Type B free agents, teams won’t be able to stock pile a boat load of draft picks as they have in years past if they offered their own free agents salary arbitration and let them walk. Interestingly—and not so fortunately for the Cubs— this change may not be the best thing for an organization trying to build from the ground up. Now teams will have to go out and feverishly scout the amateur ranks—and make sure they’re getting it right— because there will be fewer draft picks available. If anything, the new rules promise to get the offseason off to a fast start. Free agents no longer have to file for free agency. As soon as the World Series ended, players with at least six years of big league service time and expired contracts automatically hit the market. The Cubs had only one such player, reliever Shawn Camp, and the team expressed interest in bringing him back at season’s end. The new rules work like this: A team must make a “qualifying offer” to a free agent to be eligible for draft pick compensation if that player signs else where. That is a one-year offer for the average of the top 125 salaries the previous season, or $13.3 million in 2012. If the player rejects the one-year deal and signs with another team, the compensation pick would be awarded at the end of the first round. One other twist is that teams will not be able to get draft pick compensation for players they receive during the season who leave to become free agents. For example, the Cubs traded pitcher Ryan Dempster to Texas last July. The Rangers will not be able to get draft pick compensation if Dempster signs elsewhere because he did not spend the entire season in Texas. So clubs have a couple of choices with their bigname freeagents: Either let them walk and get nothing in return, or gamble the money on the one-year qualifying offer knowing that if the player rejects the offer, the team gets an extra draft pick.

And no organization can be judged on the strength of its big league team alone. As Epstein said from the beginning, the goal in Chicago is to build a foundation for sustained success. That foundation got a lot stronger in 2012, despite the results at the major league level. To be continued.

up through the minor league system before the end result is represented. Some Cubs fans may not have that long to wait for this way. Until then the big news in Cubdom is the Cubs relocation to Kane County, about 60 miles west of Chicago. Fans can expect to see major leaguers on rehab asssignments, and while McLeod and Hyde are noncommittal on specifics, minor league players generally move up a rung to begin a baseball season. The Boise Hawks of the Class A Short Season Northwest League made it to the 2012 league championship series. The Hawks were managed by former White Sox catcher Mark Johnson, who was promoted to Kane County. The 2012 Hawks included last year’s first round draft pick outfielder Albert Almora (.292 in 65 AB, just out of high school in Florida), slugging 260 pound first baseman Dan Vogelbach (.322, 10 HR in 143 AB) and Dominican-born third baseman Jeimer Candelario, who is likely to start for Kane County. “It’s a great opportunity for our players to play in this environment,” McLeod said. “They will get more exposure to folks and a lot of Chicago media. Seeing WGN every day, getting up and reading the local newspapers. (Players still do that?!) That’s helpful in their development. We had it in Boston, three teams being so close (Short-A Lowell, Mass, AA Portland, Maine and AAA Pawtucket, R.I.) Players weren’t as ‘deer in the headlights’ when they moved up.

“We have a day game, our head trainer can come here (Geneva) with Matt Garza or whoever, get their work in, and drive back to Chicago. Knowing Dale, he will get here to watch some games. Dale lives in Phoenix and we have this (off-season) camp that goes on at Fitch and Dale’s there almost every day. There will be an A-ball kid working out and Dale will take him by himself and work with him in the cage for a few hours.” Kane County season ticket sales are up from last season. Local fans at every level want to see a winning team, but more empahsis on development is placed on younger players at Kane County and Boise instead of Class AAA Iowa in Des Moines, which consists of older players and a few spare parts one stop away from the majors. Hyde, 39, played in 200 minor league games before becoming a minor league manager between 2005-09 for the Marlins system. “Winning is a part of development,” he explained. “At 7:05 (game time) it’s about winning the game. From two to seven is development time. It’s a balance that is touchy at times. “You’re still teaching professionalism at this level.” Dave Hoekstra is a Chicago Sun-Times staff writer. His 2009 book “Cougars, Snappers and Loons, Oh My!” A Midwest League Field Guide” (Can’t Miss Press)” is a collection of columns he composed for Kane County game day programs since 1992.

Keeping Score

Cubs fans can enjoy baseball more this spring by keeping score of the game. The best part about keeping score is that it’s easy. All you need is a basic knowledge of baseball’s rules. Experts use a simple code which is based on numbering players by their positions.

Number Players As Follows

1 Pitcher 2 Catcher 3 First Baseman 4 Second Baseman 5 Third Baseman

A dditiona l Sy m b o l s :

6 Shortstop 7 Left Fielder 8 Center Fielder 9 Right Fielder DH Designated Hitter

Every time a batter goes to the plate, use the number to indicate how he was retired or how he reached base. Fielding plays, retiring batters or runners also call for use of the numbers. For instance, the batter who grounds out to the shortstop is retired 6-3 in your scoring. If he flies to the right fielder, merely use the figure 9. If it is foul: 9F.
