here are few areas in the eastern sections of Virginia and North Carolina that offer as much beautiful freshwater lake as Lake Gaston. Situated between Interstates 95 and 85 on the Virginia/North Carolina border, the lake boasts more than 350 miles of shoreline that surrounds close to 21,000 acres of lake. Lake Gaston is 34 miles long and as much as 1.4 miles wide at its widest points. The lake has an average depth of 45 feet and a maximum of 95 feet. The lake offers clean water for fishing, swimming, boating and a variety of waters sports in a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. The lake offers a wonderful fishery with an abundance of game fish. Its most popular and sought after game fishes are the largemouth and striped bass. The lake also is home to walleye, black crappie and several species of catfish. Several rental homes are available for vacationers and range from waterfront cottages to large homes with sleeping accommodations for six to a dozen or more people. There are several real estate companies around the lake who handle vacation rental property. The lake also has many private as well as public boat ramps and at least eight
marinas. There is limited camping available with Outdoor World, Stonehouse TimberLodge in North Carolina and Americamps and The Club Resort in Virginia. Boating on Lake Gaston is spectacular. There are several islands and beaches where boaters can enjoy the outdoors any day of the week. A sandy public beach is located at the south end of the Lake Gaston Dam but there are no mooring facilities to accommodate boats. It is accessible by vehicle from Highway 158. Boat rentals are available and range from pontoons to personal watercraft in several locations around the lake. There are three public golf courses located either on the lake or adjacent to it. Three private golf courses accommodate visitors if accompanied by a member. Many restaurants are located around the lake. They range from pizza restaurants to elegant waterfront bistros. The majority of Lake Gaston lies within the state of North Carolina and includes portions of Northampton, Warren and Halifax counties. Nearby towns include Littleton, Norlina, Macon and Warrenton. The town of Gaston lies about 20 miles due east of Lake Gaston in Northampton County.
The Gaston dam is located in Northampton County. Boards of commissioners who are elected to four-year terms govern North Carolina counties. A county manager administers all department heads in the county. The majority of the Lake Gaston area in North Carolina is rural in nature. Many of Lake Gaston’s creeks in the northeast quadrant, including the majority of Pea Hill and Poplar creeks, and parts of Pigeonroost and Lizard creeks along with the majority of the western quadrant of the main lake lie within the state of Virginia in Brunswick and Mecklenburg counties. Towns include Gasburg, Ebony, and Bracey. Boards of supervisors and a county administrator who oversees the various county departments provide government for Virginia counties. Most of the area of Lake Gaston in Virginia is rural and mostly agricultural. For more information, contact the Lake Gaston Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center at 2475 Eaton Ferry Road, Littleton, N.C., and by phone at 252-586-5711. A family business carried on and expanded

ithin the lake area is a store that has been in the same family for close to 80 years. J.B. Jones a farmer who fought in WW II and who drove the writer Ernie Pyle to the boat that took him to Africa built a country store in 1932 on Blackridge Road in La Crosse, Va., to provide his community with a place closer to home to purchase their supplies. Jones cured hams from his farm to sell at the J.B. Jones Company store. In 1935, a band of gypsies came through the area, stole all the hams from the store and burned the store to the ground. Afterwards Jones went to Petersburg, Va., to where it was determined the cul-

prits had fled and when Jones returned, he brought his hams back with him. A man full of determination, Jones rebuilt his store. With the J.B. Jones Company store providing necessities for residents in the area, it survived in its new location until 1976, when J.B. died. At that point, Eric B. Jones and his wife Robin A. Jones built a larger store next to the one that was built in 1935. They kept the same values as Eric’s family had begun and enlarged upon the inventory and brought in new equipment to meet the demands of the day. When Robin learned of a lady who was selling cakes out of her home to the bread company that supplied J.B. Jones Com-
pany store, the cakes were placed on the shelves because no refrigeration was required at that time. Robin decided, “Well if they can do that, I can just bake cakes at my home and put them on the counter and sell them.” Later the store put in its own bakery. Today, the same store is in operation but has made necessary updates. Today J.B. Jones carries fresh produce, a full line of fresh meat, rib eye steaks cut to order, they grind their own beef and have fresh chicken on weekends. They have over the counter medications, cleaning supplies, toys, greeting cards, wind chimes, frozen foods, soft drinks and wine. They kept the name, J.B. Jones Compa-
pany because J.B. had requested it, but now, with the addition of the bakery the name is J.B. Jones Co. & Bakery. Robin adds new cake flavors every year and while keeping old favorites too. Popular cake flavors of the bakery are raspberry chocolate, banana pudding cake, cookies and cream cake and lemon coconut. Their pies are very sought after as well and include lemon chess, chocolate and others. The lemon chess pie will melt in your mouth and the home-baked
cookies are just like mama used to make. Last year candy was added to the enticements at the bakery entrance. Eric and Robin’s daughter, Jessica, makes homemade chocolates. There are candies with Jones cake in it and she uses flavors of fresh fruits in season for the chocolates as well as wines from Rosemont Winery just up the road to create chocolate truffles. Next door on the left of the J.B. Jones Co. Store & Bakery, stands the smaller building that housed the old store. It is
now used as a nursery and is in full bloom with flowering plants that are displayed in front of the J.B. Jones Co. & Bakery. John Barner Jones, Eric’s and Robin’s son, developed the nursery. The nursery carries mulch year round, a multitude of plants in the spring and summer and a concoction created by the younger Jones to improve soil quality. Proud of his product, Eric urges people to mix it in clay for better growing quality and sprinkle his mix on the yard to improve grass growth.

Lake Gaston rewards anglers with lunkers and a mixed creel
Lake Gaston has some of the best freshwater fishing in the east. Whatever an angler’s quarry, Lake Gaston has it. The lake is full of game fish including largemouth bass, walleye and a healthy population of striped bass. The Lake Gaston fishery also holds a good population of crappie, pickerel, yellow perch, sunfish and several varieties of catfish. Whether one prefers traveling all around the lake in search of that elusive lunker or just relaxing with rod and reel on their own dock, there is something for anglers of all ages. And those lunkers don’t always have to be chased. Just last fall, four anglers landed the now famous Lake Gaston cat from the dock at Stonehouse Timber Lodge. Dubbed “Gonna Need More Tarter Sauce” by anglers John Kenney, Dan Webber, Daryll Smith and Jay O’Donnell, the big blue catfish weighed in at 89 pounds. Then this spring, two anglers pulled in a 78-pound blue catfish on the south end of the lake across from Pea Hill Creek. Just keep in mind that if you get a cooler full of fish on Lake Gaston, you may have just one fish.
Bennie Bryant and Craig Akins pose with the lunker 78-pound catfish caught from Lake Gaston mid-April. Akins landed the fish and went on to catch about 70 more pounds from the south end of the lake across from Pea Hill Creek. Discover Lake Gaston 2011 6

Two Lake Gaston organizations with boating and water safety in mind T
Lake Gaston Water Safety Council
he Lake Gaston Water Safety Council is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to improving water safety through education. Public awareness of all aspects of water safety is its primal goal. The WSC provides educational materials through letters, brochures, newspaper articles, announcements and a Safety Information Trailer that they display almost every weekend and holiday during the Lake Gaston boating season. The council also provides assistance to other organizations, both public and private, in providing tools and funds to enhance safety on the water. The Lake Gaston Water Safety Council championed many initiatives that have provided increased water safety and water safety awareness on Lake Gaston. The WSC established and maintains a continuing Children’s Life Vest Loaner Program with more than 100 child-sized life vests placed in the marinas on Lake Gaston. The availability and the locations of the vests are publicized in the local press, during the season, and the vests are loaned, free of charge. Visitors, and anyone else, may borrow a life vest as needed to better enjoy their boating or water recreation experience.

lake on weekends and holidays during the boating season. They are ready to assist boaters with everything from getting fuel to towing a disabled boat to giving directions. As part of the U.S. Coast Guard, Flotilla 93 is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security. The USCG Auxiliary is a volunteer service organization composed of men and women who actively support recreational boating safety and other Coast Guard civil missions. It sponsors boating safety courses, vessel safety inspections, and boater assistance patrols throughout the boating season. Members of the Auxiliary are volunteers who donate their time to further the mission of the Coast Guard. A member does not have to have any military experience or any special qualifications except for a willingness to help their fellow citizens. All training is provided by the USCG and includes the opportunity to qualify in Vessel Examination, Air and Surface Operations, Marine Safety and Environmental Protection, Aids to Navigation Verifier, Auxiliary Administration, Radio Watchstanding, Instructor, and Chart Updating. Lake Gaston’s Flotilla 93 conducts safety patrols from May through September of each year. The on-the-water patrols include: Search and Rescue Operations; advising boaters of safety issues concerning their vessels and operation; Vessel Safety Checks; Verification of ATON (Aids TO Navigation) buoys and safety markers; removing debris from the waters and report-
ing oil or chemical spills to the appropriate authorities; assisting local agencies during regattas, water sport competitions, and public displays such as the O’Sail Crossing, wakeboard competitions, and the Fourth of July Fireworks display held each year on the lake. Radio contact is maintained with an onshore base station and each crew member has been trained to offer such services from simply providing directions to lost boaters or towing a boat that has lost power back to shore. The Auxiliary has no police powers and its mission is to help boaters in distress. In addition to maintaining contact with the base radio station, it also monitors the marine VHF distress frequency. The Auxiliary will also respond to a distress signal such as waving a life vest, shirt, or a flag, or sending up a flare. Waving your hand to the patrol boat will not usually be seen as a distress signal. Providing Vessel Safety Inspections is another important part of the patrol’s duties. Upon request, they will perform a safety inspection and will inform the vessel’s owner of any deficiency in safety equipment. Safety Patrol crews are trained in stern and side by side towing techniques and they are frequently called upon to use these skills, particularly at the beginning of the season. Disabled boats are towed to shore at the boat owner’s request. The USCGA is dedicated to providing Education, Search and Rescue, and Safety services to recreational boaters. The USCGAux on Lake Gaston consists of 13 members and new members are always welcome. Additional information on Flotilla 93 and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary can be found on their web site at www. flotilla93.com.
Lake Gaston’s newest dining pleasure points to
The Pointe
W
hether you walk onto the gazebo or show up in your boat, Lake Gaston’s newest restaurant offers a taste of the islands in an incredible lake setting. Located on the point at Morningstar Marinas, owners Chad Barbour and Randall Robinson wanted to make The Pointe at Lake Gaston a place that offered something different and unique to area residents and visitors. “We call it casual dining with flip-flop elegance,” Barbour said. “We want to have a relaxed atmosphere that provides great food and great service.” The thatched hut over the inside bar area coupled with the tiki bar area in the gazebo provide the perfect compliment to the lush landscape at The Pointe and create a welcoming and relaxing environment for diners. Inside seating and bar service is also available, and The Pointe has all ABC permits as well. “We have the most extensive selection of beers and wines between Raleigh and
Richmond,” Robinson said. “We also have a menu that offers everything from chicken tenders to Ahi tuna.” Extensive menu is actually an understatement, as The Pointe offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner that spans the spectrum from bacon and eggs and omelets to steak and eggs for breakfast to flat iron steaks and rib-eye for dinner. The lunch and dinner menu also includes a wide selection of sandwiches that are all served with a side included in the price. In addition to an expansive menu
and a lush and restful environment, The Pointe is hosting a variety of entertainment events, including acoustic music on Wednesday nights and live bands every other Saturday outside on the Pointe. “We think that people are looking for something fun to do here at the lake,” Barbour said. “They can find everything that they’re looking for right here without traveling outside the area.” There is also a cornhole board at the front of the restaurant for use by guests. Dock service is another great feature at The Pointe. During the summer months beginning after Memorial Day weekend, patrons who arrive by boat can be served right there without waiting or coming inside. “It’s all about what’s convenient to the people at Lake Gaston,” Robinson said. “When you’re providing a service, you have to cover all the bases and with so much water travel here, it’s just a great option to make available to our customers.” Casual dining, tropical atmosphere, and live entertainment make The Pointe the place to be on Lake Gaston this summer. The Pointe is open daily from 7 a.m. for breakfast and begins serving lunch at 11 a.m. on the weekdays and Saturday, with breakfast availability extended until 1 p.m. on Sundays. Instructor Janice Jiggetts, supervisor for the Medical Fitness Lab at Community Memorial Healthcenter’s Rehab Services Department, teaches a water aerobics class in the aqua-therapy pool.
Community Memorial Healthcenter offers monitored, fun, rehab and fitness center
O
ne of the only medically supervised facilities in the region, Community Memorial Healthcenter’s Rehab and Exercise Therapy Center in South Hill has a lot to offer. Equipped with everything from a full gym and aqua therapy pool to a healthy body fitness studio, this facility has something for everyone—especially those in need of physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy—or for those who just want to get in shape and lead a healthier lifestyle. “I think that there is a lack of understanding about what we do here,” said Donna Jarrell, who is director of the Rehab Therapy department at CMH. 11 Discover Lake Gaston 2011
While the exercise center has treadmills, weights, and exercise bikes, it is more than just a gym. Aqua-therapy as well as physical, occupational and speech therapies are just some of the services offered. But the real difference is the people. “The key difference is the clinical skills of the staff. They all have experience and training to respond to medical emergencies and they communicate with patient’s physicians on a regular basis,” said Jarrell. “We are truly a physician extender. We try to do some of the legwork because the doctors are so busy.” The aqua-therapy program has developed tremendously over the last few years. Therapists hold one-on-one sessions five
days a week for patients that benefit from the buoyancy of a pool. They also offer water aerobics and water resistance workout programs that are open to anyone in the community. The center has a full cardiac telemetry system that is used to monitor the rhythm of patient’s hearts. It is recommended that everybody, patient or visitor, who uses the fitness facility be placed on the heart monitor for observation for periodic assessments. “I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had a patient come in and they just weren’t feeling right. We hooked them up to the telemetry unit and observed cardiac changes and they were sent to the ER,”
said Valerie Reid, a doctor of physical and fresh. Reid, who is originally from Suffolk,Va., has worked in a number of facilities across the Commonwealth says that this facility is nicer than most across the state. “We’re a small town but this is not a small town facility,” said Reid. “I’ve had so many people tell me that this is the best kept secret in South Hill.” One reason the exercise therapy center is so cutting edge is the courage of the staff to utilize every tool available for their patients. For instance, patients are encouraged to incorporate the Nintendo Wii into their rehabilitation therapy. Danielle Simlick, DPT, said that use of the Wii is key to immediate progress reports. In a community where golfing is so popular, the Wii plays a very important role in giving patients the confidence and ability to get back on the greens. “When a person is recovering from a back injury, you can’t take them out to a real golf course for nine holes, but on the Wii they can work towards nine holes of golf,” said Simlick. “It makes it more exciting.” Traditional therapy involves all of the same kinds of actions that are used while operating the Wii, they just aren’t as much fun. “Traditionally, we will have folks stand on a platform and pass a balloon back and forth or stand on one leg and pass the balloon back and forth. But with the Wii there’s surfing games for that,” said Simlick. Scott Houser, also a DPT, said that one of the greatest advantages is the wide variety of games that offer different levels based on a patient’s cognition and skill. He said that the immediate results increase confidence among patients. Willie C. Brown of Bracey is a stroke victim. He has been coming for about 3 months to the rehab center. Mr. Brown says that he enjoys the freedom of the workout schedules and the specialized care. “I love it,” said Brown. “I’ve been coming for shoulder therapy and it’s a great place. I do what I feel like I can do. I’m not pressured into doing more than I can do.” Brown said that he enjoys the cleanliness of the facility. “You Willie Brown is a Bracey resident and recent stroke victim. LGA hosts county forum
Counties discuss budgets, weed control, other issues BY SUSAN SHAW-SNOW LGG-O Editor County managers and commissioners from all five counties surrounding Lake Gaston attended a five-county forum hosted by the Lake Gaston Association Thursday, march 17. On the agenda for discussion were taxes, weed control, water quality emergency and law enforcement services. LGA president Doug Hughes moderated the forum and said the purpose was to help each county help one another to better understand whatʼs going on in the counties, “Not just in the lake area, but the entire counties,” Hughes said. “Itʼs important that folks think about the entire community and the counties surrounding the lake and not just the

lake area. I think we can all work together to improve the conditions in the entire counties and thus improving the region.” Hughes gave a brief description of the LGA, who it represents and its upcoming events. “We will be coming
to each county board to ask for help with our lake clean up day that will take place May 7,” Hughes said. He outlined the issues to be discussed and encourage questions and discussion on all of them from all the county representatives present. In opening the forum, the county representatives were given a presentation of a study funded by the city of Virginia Beach on the possible impact uranium mining could have on the water quality of Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston. Tom Leahy who performed the study gave the presentation. Leahy has more than 30 years experience in water quality issues. The findings of a City of Virginia Beach study that

Northampton County residents debate issue of hunting with dogs BY PAMELA CARPENTER LGG-O Staff Writer

Men, women, and children adorned in camouflage and blaze orange filled the auditorium of the Wellness Center in Jackson last Tuesday night as Northampton Commissioners received public comment on the issue of hunting with the use of dogs in the county.

The Lake Gaston Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 93 began its monthly boating safety classes Saturday, March 19. Five people signed up for the early class which satisfies the certification requirement for both Virginia and North Carolina boating regulations. Those taking and passing the test were front row from left, Marianne Morton of Davidsonville, Md., Kelsey Corrigan of Colonial Heights, Va., and Freda Reilly of Virginia beach, Va. Students and instructors back row are from left, Coast Guard Auxiliary instructor Joee Hoxter, Ken Reilly of Virginia Beach, Va., Brian Corrigan of Richmond, Va., and Coast Guard Auxiliary instructor Jane Teasley. The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers one class a month throughout the summer. The next class will be held April 9.
Men, women, and children adorned in camouflage and blaze orange filled the auditorium of the Wellness Center in Jackson last Tuesday night as Northampton Commissioners received public comment on the issue of hunting with the use of dogs in the county. County manager Wayne Jenkins advised the crowd at the outset of its purpose. “This is an official County Commissioners meeting, but there will be no operational or policy decisions made at this meeting,” Jenkins read from a prepared statement. “The purpose of tonightʼs meeting is to conduct a public forum whereby commissioners will receive public comment regarding the subject of hunting with dogs in Northampton County.”
Jenkins further advised the audience that commissioners would not answer questions during the meeting. Arthur C. Grant, Jr. of Rich Square, NC spoke first, raising valid points about the financial impact of banning hunting with dogs and the traditions that surround it. Grant was not wearing the hunterʼs camouflage and blaze orange, but a uniform of the United States military. “After 33 years of dog hunting experience, certain things will happen if this law is passed,” Grant said. “Insurance rates will go up – the deer population will probably double in a year. We have 4,000 – 4,500 killed [by automobiles] each year, and we can plan on double that if the deer donʼt get harvested.” Grant suggested penalties for trespassing to address property
