the history behind each doorway

Whether you’re making Warren County your new home or just visiting here, you’ll soon notice the rich history of the area in its historic homes and buildings and friendly towns. Warren County’s development predates the American Revolution as it was formed in 1764 from Granville County. At that time, the area was named Bute in honor of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, former Prime Minister and Lord of the Treasury. In 1779 a committee of Bute County patriots petitioned the North Carolina Assembly to divide the county in half, naming the northern part Warren after Dr. Joseph Warren who had been killed at Bunker Hill, and the southern part Franklin, in honor of Benjamin Franklin. After the petition to divide was granted by the legislature, prosperity grew with tobacco, and later cotton, providing Warren County with great wealth. Two physicians were in practice, the ﬁrst courthouse was built, and churches ﬂourished, most notably Hebron Methodist, founded in 1771. By 1860, Warren was the richest county in North Carolina. Health resorts, with their sulphur springs and hotels, brought in visitors from all across the country. Shocco Springs and Jones Spring were among the better known, and it was at the latter that Annie Carter Lee, daughter of General Robert E. Lee, stayed with her family during the War Between the States. Orren Randolph Smith, a native of the county, designed the original Stars and Bars at the onset of the War Between the States. Warren County has provided the state with four governors, six attorneys general, three Supreme Court justices, four superior court judges and ﬁve magnates in the tobacco industry. Warren County is made up of three incorporated towns surrounded by more than half a dozen communities which share in the region’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. Discover Warren County—Page 5

Warrenton The town of Warrenton, the county seat, was established during the fourth year of the American Revolution. On July 22, 1779, 100 acres of land were purchased for the town from Thomas Christmas, and William Christmas drew the ﬁrst plan of the town with 162 half-acre lots. By the 1920s the town prospered as the center of a plantation region. Warrenton became an educational center with the Warrenton Academy chartered in 1786 by the Macon brothers, one of whom, Nathaniel, would become one of the greatest speakers of the U.S. House of Representatives. Two additional schools were founded later, the Falkener School for young ladies by 1800, and the Mordecai School by 1809. Warrenton Academy later became John Graham High School, located on North Main Street, which now houses the Warren County Department of Social Services. Warrentonians enjoyed ﬁne architecture, music, dancing, art, and horse racing. Beautiful homes were built as centerpieces of the large plantations, and later Jacob Holt townhouses were erected. Prosperity continued to grow thanks to the cotton gin. The town’s population by 1800 was 238, and by 1850 it had increased to 700. Today it is over 860. Norlina With a population of over 1,100, Norlina is located just south of the Virginia border, situated on land that was part of a grant to an early John Langford for his service in the Revolutionary War.

In 1900, Robert F. Rose, a descendant of Langford, sold just under five acres of land in Norlina to the Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad for the building of a depot at the juncture of the Seaboard Air Line Railway and the RaleighGaston Railroad. One of his sons, John Horace Rose, also sold land to the railroad. Before the town was named Norlina, a combination of “North” and “Carolina,” the area was called Mount Regis. In 1901, a hotel was built to accommodate travelers stopping in the area, many of whom would have dinner on their way through the town. With the town being a railroad juncture, Norlina grew rapidly. Businesses in the town included a hardware store, a cotton gin, a drug store, the Metropolitan Cafe run by “Jack the Greek,” a shoe shop and a hunting club, which was turned into a private residence in the year 2000. Around 1909, The Norlina School was erected and was later moved to the site where the junior/senior high school campus of Norlina Christian School stands today. The original frame building was used until 1915 when construction on a new school was begun. The Norlina Graded School opened on Feb. 1, 1916. Norlina was incorporated in 1913 with citizens

agreeing to make the town one square mile with the railroad station as the direct center. The growth of the town was at its peak just before and during the time of World War II with the railroads playing an important part in the war by providing transportation for the troop trains, both north and south, and also to the seaports at Portsmouth and Norfolk, Va. During the war years there were 18 passenger trains a day running through Norlina, north and south, and four passenger trains daily on the Portsmouth, Va. line. Additional trains carrying freight and troops also ran through the town.

macon The smallest of the county’s incorporated towns, Macon is located northeast of Warrenton. It was settled in the early 1800s, and its post ofﬁce was established in 1839. The area started out as Macon Depot. In the 1880s, the name was changed in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a prominent county native who was three times Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and a U.S. Senator from 1815-1828. He and his brother, John, were both active in 1786 toward founding The Warrenton Academy. Macon was the hometown of the late Reynolds Price, a well-known North Carolina author. the eastern bluebird rescue group If you see more bluebirds now than you did in the past, it is probably due in large part to the efforts of citizens who place bluebird houses in their yards, on their farms and in other places they think the beautiful feathered creatures would like to call home. One local group working to build such houses is the nonproﬁt organization Eastern Bluebird Rescue Group, which operates a factory at 532 W. Ridgeway St., Warrenton. The organization formed out of the

hope that more bluebirds would return to the area, and grew with the goal of making Warren County the “Bluebird Capital of the World.” Frank Newell, the group’s president and chief executive officer, recalls that the outlook for the Eastern Bluebird’s survival was bleak just a few decades ago. “The bluebird population dwindled to 10 percent of the normal population density in the 1970s, and they were about to become extinct,” he said. “That’s when we started to get serious about trying to save them.” At his home, Newell built a few bluebird houses, which were occupied almost as fast as he could finish them. People began to ask him to construct bluebird houses for them, and volunteers started to offer to help make more houses. Newell considers 1985 to be the year that bluebird house building efforts took off in earnest. From a workshop at the Newell family farm near Warrenton, bluebird house construction moved to an empty warehouse on Ridgeway Street in 2004 and, more recently, to its current location in another warehouse. A number of individual volunteers help Newell build the bluebird houses, but his largest volunteer group is known as the “Friends of Frank.” They like to come to the factory on the first and third Mondays of each month and

start working around 7:30 a.m. They typically build 800 bluebird houses by lunchtime. With dedicated volunteers like that, Eastern Bluebird Rescue Group has built and distributed well over 140,000 houses to date. Its largest distributor of the houses is State Employees Credit Union (SECU). Recently Eastern Bluebird Rescue Group and SECU volunteers traveled to Raleigh to donate the group’s 100, 000th bluebird house to Gov. Beverly Perdue.

Bluebird houses have been shipped to every state except three and to three foreign countries. “Due to loss of habitat, contamination and pollution of the environment, there are very few places that bluebirds can nest except bluebird houses,” Newell said. Because more and more people along the East Coast are putting up bluebird houses, the bluebird’s population density has returned to 64 percent of normal and is still climbing. In this area, bluebirds, who mate for life, usually nest in April, June and August. “For each birdhouse you put up and monitor, it has the potential over the three nesting periods to bring 12 baby bluebirds a year into the world,” Newell said.

Voter Registration Once you have been a resident of Warren County for 30 days, you may register to vote in Warren County. In order to make updates or changes to your voter registration, you should be prepared to provide proof of your previous and/or current address - both mailing and physical (E-911 assignment) in Warren County. Other agencies that provide voter registration services include the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, driver’s license division; the Department of

Social Services, Employment Security Commission or the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children office at the Warren County Health Department. Registration books close 25 days prior to any election; however, a new law that was passed in 2007 allows for first-time voter registration during One-Stop voting. Warren County offers K-12 education in both public and private schools, as well as access to higher learning through VanceGranville Community College, which has a local campus in Warrenton. Warren County Schools includes four elementary schools, a middle school and three high schools, giving students a choice in preparing for the future. The county also has a charter school — the HaliwaSaponi Tribal School — and a private learning environment at Norlina Christian School.

Lake Gaston Annual Boat Parade celebrates Independence Day on July 3, 2011, 10:30 a.m. The parade route covers several coves along the lake before returning to the Main Lake, where participants gather to sing.

Ridgeway Cantaloupe Festival: Presented on July 16, 2011 by the Ridgeway Historical Society, Inc. and the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department. Event will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. behind the Ridgeway Cantaloupe Shed located near the ﬁre department on Highway 1. Parks & Recreation The Warren County Parks & Recreation Department provides organized sports activities for children and adults throughout the year, plus several playgrounds. Programs include soccer, football, baseball, softball, basketball and occasional clinics. A central recreation complex offers a walking trail, multiple ﬁelds, a playground and open areas for enjoying outings. A park in the Manson area includes tennis and basketball courts, picnic areas and a swimming pool, and a gymnasium in Warrenton hosts events including pickleball games and basketball tournaments. Other organizations in the county offer sports activities during the year, including church league softball three nights a week during the summer.

Whether you are a skilled quilter or are working on your ďŹ rst quilt, if you are looking for other people who share your love for this traditional yet contemporary craft, the Heritage Quilters may be the perfect group for you. For 10 years now, a diverse group of Warren, Vance and Halifax county residents has gathered on a regular basis to share their love of quilts and desire to help their community through a variety of projects. The idea for the Heritage Quilters began to develop in the mid-1980s as Warrenton residents Margaret Bullock and Jereann King Johnson discussed forming two groups â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one interested in writing oral histories and family stories, and the other interested in quilting.

include 21 members now. Johnson said that members enjoy making a wide variety of quilt styles from traditional to contemporary, including pieces that look like works of art. Projects include both handand machinequilted creations. Over the past decade, the members have showcased their talents in several quilt shows. In addition to quilting, the Heritage Quilters are dedicated to helping their community. “Service is a big part of our mission,” Johnson said. The group is involved in a variety of activities, including quilt documentation to build an archive of Warren County quilts; a countywide tour for new teachers and school system personnel to help them learn Page 30—Discover Warren County

more about the area; work with youth groups; area presentations, especially with youth, school groups and other community-based groups, and participation in local festivals to help others learn about their work. The Heritage Quilters are also active in the Community Investment Network and provide small scholarships to collegebound high school seniors. the joys of classical music

Tucked away in the community of Inez in southern Warren County stands a musical treasure — historic Cherry Hill, which has developed a farreaching reputation for offering performances of world-renowned musicians. Concerts feature piano, voice, string quartets, classical guitar and a wide variety of other instruments. Those attending the performances have a unique opportunity to enjoy music in a historic setting dating back to 1859, when it was built for Marina Alston and her family. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many original features of the structure remain today, and the curved staircase in the foyer is a favorite sitting place for concertgoers. The home, built in the style of noted Warren County builder Jacob Holt, was originally situated on 2,000 acres and retains 500 of the original acreage. Members of the Alston family lived at Cherry Hill until 2004. The home’s most recent resident, Edgar Thorne, created the Cherry Hill Historical

Foundation. Inc. in 1982 with the dream of establishing a venue for cultural and educational events for local residents. In the years since then, his dream has come true with six endowed classical music concerts every year — three in the fall and three in the spring. The addition of central heating and air conditioning has allowed for an expanded concert season and provided more seating areas

for concertgoers, including the popular screened porch. Over the past season, performances have included concert pianists Thomas Pandolﬁ and Thomas Otten, violinist/ pianist Carol Chung, pianist Daniel Steinert, saxophonist Brian Koser, soprano Pamela Koser, the Duke Pegram Trio, student cellist Kieran Campbell, and opera singer Julia Rolwing. The 2010 season also included Cherry Hill’s ﬁrst summer music camp, featuring children’s chorus, piano master classes and lessons, as well as a concert performed on a three-keyboard Allen organ Discover Warren County—Page 35

brought up especially for the summer camp. Over the years, the historic home has received praise from performers for its exceptional acoustics. The site features a Steinway concert grand piano that has solidiﬁed Cherry Hill’s reputation as an excellent venue for classical music. Edgar Thorne’s vision of bringing music to people of all ages continues to be the main focus of Cherry Hill’s board of directors.
