FOREWORD

An outstanding 17 teams entered this year’s edition of the Cartier Queen’s Cup, delivering a remarkable feast of fabulous polo over the past three weeks. Every game delivered the passion, drive and determination that are the hallmarks of this world-famous, high-goal polo tournament. Such depth of talent also ensures that our many wonderful guests from around the world can watch this afternoon’s magnificent final from the luxury of the Cartier Enclosure.

This year’s final is particularly auspicious as it is being played in the year of the Coronation of HM King Charles lll. His Majesty has a particular affinity with this tournament as he was a member of the winning team, Les Diables Bleus, in 1986. Cartier is also proud of its long-standing association with HM The King through its role as a Royal Warrant Holder to The Prince of Wales (as a member of the Royal Warrant Holder’s Association). Cartier was first awarded this honour in 1904 and is proud of the Maison’s title as “the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers”.

Cartier is equally proud of its sponsorship of such a prestigious, global polo tournament. We recognise and praise the commitment and focus that is needed by the teams just to reach today’s final so do join me in showing your appreciation of their skill, hard work and dedication and thank you all for your continued support of this most prestigious of polo days.

May the best team win.

MUSIC TO PLAY TO

A popular, non-polo highlight of the Cartier Queen’s Cup Final is the opportunity to be entertained by one of the UK’s leading military bands. This year’s event is no exception as the Club welcomes the Band of the Grenadier Guards, in their striking scarlet uniforms, to parade on to the polo field several times during the day.

CARTIER TAKES A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY

Le Voyage Recommencé highlights Cartier’s style in a new light

Photographs courtesy of CARTIER

Late last month Cartier launched a new high jewellery collection, Le Voyage Recommencé. The new collection highlights the powerful creative gesture that is at the heart of this collection, approaching the Maison’s essentials in a new light. Designing precious works of architecture, expanding the possibilities of lines and the abstract, reinventing the palette of chromatic harmonies; celebrating life and the world’s horizons: all stylistic domains are approached with the same freedom—and taken even further.

Geometry and contrast are two elements that make up the Cartier style. They are either based on form and pattern, developed around symmetry or asymmetry, or based on the strengths of contrasts.

The new collection, which is made up of nearly 80 never-before seen separate creations, was unveiled in the garden of the Palazzo Corsini, one of the Florence’s magnificent locations, which today houses works by Rubens, Fra Angelico and Caravaggio. This palace was transformed into a magnificent setting to which many distinguished guests dear to the Maison were invited, including Cartier ambassadors Vanessa Kirby, Golshifteh Farahani and Elle Fanning.

Everything at Cartier always revolves around the purity of lines, the balance of shapes and volumes and the final harmony of the entire piece. This collection was no exception, following these precepts to achieve ultimate beauty. Gemstones with character are always the raison d’etre of every Cartier creation and this rule is regularly reflected in the pieces from Le Voyage Recommencé. The Claustra necklace for example showcases a set

of shield diamonds, including a remarkable 4.02-carat specimen at the centre of a complex structure made up of broken lines. The effects of perspective and interplays of relief are multiplied throughout, while light vibrates and circulates.

Then when it comes to representation of nature, Cartier is able to develop a creative tension that ranges from hyper-realism to stylisation and even abstraction. The striking Panthère Givrée necklace is a great example of this, where stylisation and figuration interact with one another. First, there is the feline’s head, realistic from the tip of its nose to its almond-shaped emerald eyes and pointed ears. Then there is its coat, which is pixelated into a cloud of geometric shapes and spotted with onyx. A masterpiece, the panther appears to watch over a set of three aquamarines totalling 20.33 carats with a powerful intensity. Fine touches of lapis lazuli punctuate the composition and play on the contrast.

Le Voyage Recommence is a journey through Cartier’s style and takes a new look at the emblematic creative territories of the Maison. Following the reveal there will be more to discover from this collection in the coming months.

“Cartier has always had a passion for the world and its cultures. The taste for curiosity is the legacy of a long lineage that is more contemporary than ever. This collection is a great opportunity to delve into the essential themes of Cartier style. To explore them in greater depth, take a fresh look at them, nurtured by the spirit of the time. Approaching them with a contemporary eye to go further. A journey back to the heart of Cartier creation, an uninterrupted story being told over time.”

A RESPONSIBLE JEWELLER

Cartier is constantly striving to improve its traditions of excellence and broaden its ethical, environmental and social practices and commitments. In this regard, through the Coloured Gemstones Working Group and the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) — whose Code of Practices has been extended to rubies, sapphires and emeralds — the Maison encourages the development of best practices throughout the industry. In

addition to applying rigorously-controlled internal standards of excellence and quality, Cartier requires its suppliers to adhere to the same responsible practices and encourages and supports their RJC certification.

In order to continuously improve, Cartier strives to develop best practices and raise industry standards. Driven by the common belief that Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the dream of being a

responsible industry can only be reached through collaborative initiatives, Cartier, supported by Richemont and Kering, in partnership with the Responsible Jewellery Council, have teamed up to expand and consolidate their efforts by launching the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, which aims to develop a sustainable, climateresilient industry that conserves resources and promotes inclusion.

QUEEN’S CUP TEAMS 2023

This year’s competition attracted 17 world-class teams – one of the biggest tournament entries for many years. So play was fast and furious from the opening day back in late May and will continue into today’s final. In fact Guards Polo Club has hosted a staggering 41 games so far, with teams having to be at their peak to get through each stage of the tournament. In the mix are some of the sport’s greatest players – the illustrious 10-goalers – plus their fabulous pony power. It is these remarkable partnerships between players and ponies that can make the difference between winning and losing. Check out all the ponies playing today by picking up a copy of our pony list as these equine machines really are the stars of the show.

APPEALING Claims by players for a foul generally expressed by the raising of sticks above their heads. Over demonstrative appealing can result in a quiet word from the umpire!

BALL A polo ball is white and today is made of compressed bamboo wood or more likely a composite these days. It is 7-8 cms in diameter and weighs 130g. The ball is brightly coloured when polo is played on snow.

BELL This is situated on the side of the field and is rung by the timekeeper to inform umpires when seven minutes of play in a chukka have elapsed.

CARTIER Sponsors of polo here at Guards Polo Club since 1984 – a staggering 39 years. The leading jeweller and watchmaking maison has generously supported the Cartier Queen’s Cup since 2012, delivering a robust platform for premier polo here in the UK.

CHUKKA There are six chukkas (periods) in Cartier Queen’s Cup matches, each lasting seven minutes, plus 30 seconds of overtime. If, during those extra 30 seconds, the ball hits the sideboards or goes out of bounds, or if the umpire blows his whistle for a foul, the chukka is over. There is no extra time at the end of the final chukka unless the score is tied. Players return with a fresh pony each chukka. Chukka derives from the Indian word for a circle or round.

DIVOTS Turf kicked up by ponies’ hooves. Polo is the only sport that allows spectators to “invade” the pitch at half-time to tread-in the divots.

EQUIPMENT Approved hard hats, with straps fastened, boots, kneepads, white jeans or britches are compulsory for players. Faceguards, goggles and elbow pads are also recommended.

THE A–Z OF POLO –– CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP 2023 –– 59
FIELD A full size polo field is 300 yards by 160 yards or the area of nine football pitches. The goal posts, which collapse on severe impact, are set eight yards apart. If the scores remain level after one chukka of extra time then the goals are widened.

GOAL Any time the ball fully crosses, at any height, the line between the goal regardless of who knocks it through, including the pony, it is counted as a goal. Teams change ends after every goal to even up the disadvantage of having the sun in your eyes.

HANDICAP All players are rated on a scale of -2 – 10 (the higher the better). Although the word goal is often used after the rating, it bears no relation to the number of goals a player scores in a match but to his or her’s overall playing ability. A player’s horsemanship, range of strokes, speed of play, team and game sense are the factors considered in determining the handicap. The team handicap is the sum of the players’ handicaps. In handicap matches of six chukkas the team with the lower handicap is awarded the differing in goals at the start of the game. For example a 22-goal team would give 1 goal on handicap at the start of the match to a 21-goal team. In the Cartier Queen’s Cup competition, the total team handicap cannot be less than 17 or greater than 22.

INTERVALS Three-minute rest periods between chukkas. Half-time is usually around five minutes but might be a little longer on finals day due to the number of people treading in.

HOOK Provided the player is on the same side of the opponent’s pony as the ball he may spoil his opponent’s shot by putting his stick in the way of the striking player’s.

JUDGES Goal judges are positioned behind each goal to signal when a goal has been scored. As these goal judges might be in the firing line of a ball they must wear hard hats and body protectors. They wave a flag when a goal has been scored or hold up a polo ball to show that a shot has gone wide.

KNOCK-IN Should a team hit the ball over their opponent’s backline during an attack, then the defending team resumes the game with a free hit from the backline where the ball went over. It is the equivalent of a goal kick in football.

LINE OF THE BALL Crossing the line is the most frequent foul in polo. The line of the ball, namely the imaginary line along which the ball travels, represents a right of way for the player following nearest that line. There are strict rules governing opponents’ entry in to the right of way in the interest of safety.

NECK-SHOT A ball which is hit under the pony’s neck.

PONIES Although termed ponies, they are in fact horses. Most are Argentine Criollo breed or pure or cross-bred Thoroughbreds. Some players compete with retrained racehorses. The main qualities are speed and stamina; the ability to accelerate, stop and turn quickly. Without doubt the pony can account for as much as 80% of the player’s overall performance. There will be a Cartier Best Playing Pony prize after this final.

MALLET/STICK The shaft is made from bamboo cane or graphite composite and the head from a hard wood. The wide face of the stick head is used to strike the ball and not the ends as in croquet. Polo sticks range in length according to the height of the pony played and extend from 48 - 54 inches.

OUT-OF-BOUNDS When a ball goes over the sideboards it is considered out-of-bounds. The umpire throws the ball in between the two teams lined up at the point at which the ball left the field of play. It is the equivalent to football’s throw-in.

PENALTY A free hit is awarded when a foul is committed. The hit is taken from a set distance, dependent on the severity of the offence. Penalties and distances are: Penalty 1: automatic goal; Penalty 2: from 30 yards to an open goal; Penalty 3: from 40 yards to an open goal; Penalty 4: from 60 yards to a defended goal; Penalty 5: from anywhere on the ground; Penalty 5b: from the centre of the ground.

QUARTET The total number of players in a polo team.

RIDE OFF Two riders (see photo above) may make contact and push each other off the line of the ball to prevent the other from striking the ball. It is primarily intended for the ponies to do the pushing, but a player is allowed to use his body, but not his elbows.

SAFETY Also known as a Penalty 6, a safety is awarded when a defending player hits the ball over his own backline. The free shot is taken 60 yards out from the backline, opposite the point at which the ball went over. It is equivalent to a corner in football and no defender can be nearer than 30 yards from the ball when it is played.

THIRD MAN The referee sitting on the sidelines who will arbitrate if the two mounted umpires on the field are unable to agree on a foul. This professional umpire is in regular radio contact with the umpires out on the field.

UMPIRES Two mounted, professional umpires (see photo above) – one for each side of the field – who regulate the game. They usually wear black and white striped shirts.

It is the responsibility of the teams to provide ponies for the umpires.

VIP Cartier’s fabulous guests.

‘XTRA TIME In the event of a tied score at the end of the final chukka, there will be a fiveminute break to allow the players to catch their breath and change ponies before beginning a sudden death chukka. The first team to score wins the match.

YOUR LINE Words often heard shouted by players to a team-mate indicating that he, rather than an opponent, has the principal right of way to the ball.

ZONE (SAFETY) The wide expanse of grass between the fence and the kickboards that is out of bounds for spectators during game play.

THE DRINK OF CHAMPIONS

Polo players are regularly seen drinking tea from an elegant gourd as they watch their opponents’ matches. This is the South American herbal drink known as mate.

ALL

Walk past the tailgates of the cars that are lined up to watch matches fieldside and you will see many of those watching are also clutching a uniquely-shaped cup and sometimes even a Thermos. These spectators – many of them players – are drinking mate, the traditional, South American herbal tea. Such is its popularity among the polo world that mate has almost become an integral part of the game. It is a common sight to see polo players sipping from a gourd and many believe that the tea provides players with the necessary energy to perform at their best on the field.

Mate is known for its unique flavour and

for several health benefits too. Made from the dried leaves of the South American tree, Ilex Paraguariensis, it is a natural source of caffeine, which can provide an energy boost and the tea also contains antioxidants and vitamins. This often makes it a popular alternative to coffee and Indian and China tea. The plant’s natural caffeine content can also help increase alertness and focus, which could be beneficial when playing a fast-paced sport like polo. Many also believe that mate can help reduce stress and anxiety, so making it an excellent beverage to ease nerves before a big match.

The manner in which mate is prepared and consumed is also an important part of the experience. Traditionally, mate is served

in a hollowed-out gourd and drunk through a metal straw called a bombilla. Before the pandemic curbed the ritual, the gourd would be shared amongst friends and it was customary for the person preparing the mate to drink the first cup to ensure that it is of the right temperature and quality. This communal aspect of mate drinking remains very much part of the polo culture.

The gourds themselves are worth a mention too. Some are very plain and utilitarian but others are beautifully designed, with decorations in silver, or carvings into the gourd itself. Some early examples are even on display in the Science Museum in London, dating back to the early 19th century.

So take a look at the players seated around you in the grandstand – without doubt some will be sipping their mate, pronounced mat eh, while they watch the final.

“GENTLE AS THE MUSIC OF RAVEL”

Sirenes mastery of chromatic dynamics conveys an atmospheric miasma conjured with a finesse that calls to mind 19 th century British Painter J.M.V Turner, and the Canvas is transformed in the words of Kandinsky with a modus operandi as Lyrical Abstraction.

Sirenes artworks has been exhibited in Galleries globally, and at the Biennale in Venice and has been featured as one of 20 of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists.

QUEEN’S CUP RESULTS 1960 - 2022

HONOURS BOARD

HM Queen Elizabeth II personally donated The Queen’s Cup to Guards Polo Club in 1960, in the Club’s fifth year. In the following six decades some of the sport’s finest players have seen their names engraved on the base of this coveted silverware. It continues to be a keenly contested trophy to this day and this year’s competition highlights its importance in the global polo calendar. Some 17 worldclass teams entered the tournament back in late May in bid to be part of polo history. Some 21 of the 68 players taking part this year have already tasted success in this competition but are eager to repeat that feat in 2023. In addition, the next generation of players is widely represented in the team lists, hoping to emulate their fathers’ successes in this tournament. Heading up this group is the Cambiaso duo of Adolfo Senior and Junior, playing for Scone Polo. Adolfo Senior holds the record for the most Queen’s Cup wins, 10, while his teenage son Poroto continues to impress as he hunts down his first Cartier Queen’s Cup win. Such depth of talent in the field combined with such a history creates a unique legacy for this more remarkable of trophies - the Cartier Queen’s Cup.

A VERY WARM WELCOME BACK TO GUARDS POLO CLUB

some 66 years. His Royal Highness’s support to both me and my predecessors was invaluable, and he will be much missed by many in the polo community. I wrote on behalf of all the members of Guards Polo Club to Her Majesty expressing our deepest condolences and your Board of Directors is now looking at how best to create a permanent tribute to our President.

We are fortunate that polo continues to be of significance to the Royal Family and over the last few months I have been in

communication with The Prince of Wales’s office with regard to our new high-goal tournament. Much to the Club’s delight His Royal Highness has offered his personal support for this new 22-goal competition and suggested that we name it The Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. This tournament, which the Prince of Wales himself recognises as an “important development” at Guards Polo Club, will be played from 1 – 22 August.

Creating opportunities for players has allowed us to grow our playing membership. We welcomed 17 new Home Elected Players (HEPS) to the Club since the start of the 2020 season and incredibly eight of these are

cannot host its magnificent polo day due to international travel restrictions, they have generously renewed their corporate partnership. Laurent-Perrier Champagne, Mosimann’s and Martin Collins have also renewed their association with Guards Polo
