What Investment Prospects Await The Affluent Community In Portugal? Beyond residential real estate, Portugal’s thriving tourism sector offers investment potential in hotels, resorts, and infrastructure development. The nation’s fertile land and favourable climate encourage investments in agriculture and agribusiness. Portugal’s commitment to renewable energy, like solar and wind power, creates opportunities for eco-conscious investors. There is also a significant increase in investments related to private international schools and universities, largely due to the growing number of foreign families moving to Portugal. Furthermore, supporting cultural initiatives, such as museums and the performing arts, offers both cultural enrichment and investment returns. Lastly, investing in vineyards, wineries, and related businesses aligns with Portugal’s wine culture, promising financial rewards and cultural engagement.

ery sadly in May, Brian Stein died unexpectedly after a short illness. He was just about to complete his fifth year as Chairman of the Club, having successfully steered us through one of our toughest times, the Pandemic. Brian was also responsible for bringing HRH The Prince of Wales’s Charity Polo Day to the Club and, together with the Board, pushed through the final stages of our impressive grounds project. Despite my obvious shock, I was honoured to be asked by the Board to take on the role of Acting Chairman to guide the Club through to the end of the season. I could not have achieved this though without the support of the Club’s Board of Directors and its Chief Operating Officer, James Neighbour; an unexpected change at the top of any organisation is never easy. At the end of the season the Board asked me formally to take on the role of Chairman which I am honoured and proud to do. I joined the Club in 1964, firstly as a military player with the Irish Guards and most recently have been one of the Club’s Vice Presidents for the past 15 years. Guards Polo Club has been an integral part of my family’s life and I look forward to working closely with the Board and management team to ensure that the Club maintains its status as one of the world’s finest polo venues. We as a Club should be justly proud of a thoroughly successful season, having played a record number of 604 matches, seamlessly introduced our newest grounds to our playing schedule and nearly completed the development work on Ground Four, with its associated pony lines, ahead of time and on budget. This being the final part of our £3m grounds project. Our Polo Office has been particularly busy this season. Headed by the Director of Polo Antony Fanshawe and brilliantly supported by Tara Bown and Shannon Stephenson, the Club welcomed 12 new Home Elected Players to the Club and has seen our professional players’ list grow even stronger. Entries across most tournaments saw an increase, not least the 17 high-goal teams in the ultra8

competitive Cartier Queen’s Cup. Such stats are testament to the Club’s core philosophy of delivering great polo on excellent grounds. Howard Smith, our Chief Umpire, and his roster of umpires must take some of the credit for the excellence of the polo. This team has ensured fairness, clarity and consistency at all levels. Good umpiring is fundamental for players and spectators alike, so we must not become complacent. I do believe, however, that the standard of polo at Smith’s Lawn has never been better. Our Head Groundsman Paulius Kuklinskas and his dedicated team worked tirelessly all

year to ensure every ground was match fit, allowing more play than ever before. This was not easy due to the unseasonal weather; a baking hot June followed by the wettest August on record and then an unexpected September heatwave. Despite all that nature threw at us, the players’ feedback has been heart-warmingly positive. Tissy Sievwright continues to do an excellent job managing our eclectic portfolio of sponsors via her role as Commercial Manager. The fact that Out-Sourcing Inc. continues to sponsor both the Royal Windsor Cup and the Royal Charity Polo Day is testament to her negotiating skills. In addition, during next year’s Queen’s Cup competition we will be celebrating 40 continuous years of Cartier sponsorship at Guards Polo Club – a truly remarkable milestone. This summer Tissy has been ably supported by Sophie White and Jane Hebditch. This trio managed the seamless introduction of our new Clubhouse caterers and big event hospitality providers – Searcys and Lush by Tom Kerridge. we know that we have an excellent team in place to deliver hospitality befitting a Club such as ours. I must mention four other people who are an integral part of our office team. Pam Manku, our Financial Controller who does just that, very firmly, as well as supporting our Ticket Office Manager Vanessa Cumming with all things related to the social membership. Diana Butler our Communications Director keeps the Club in the public eye – and sometimes out of it – whilst producing this TenGoal Magazine and our Yearbook, which is the envy of the polo world. We are also fortunate to call on the many skills of Sarah Fox who has boosted our social media platforms, generating new audiences for the Club. Our Stewards, headed by David Dickman continue to do a sterling job in making members and visitors feel welcome and safe on arrival and during their time at the Club.

round 900 people enjoyed Access Bank’s Day combining a unique blend of colourful clothing, great food, live music, exhibition polo and remarkable fundraising. More than $1 million was raised for UNICEF, an outstanding achievement. Just a few days earlier we had hosted HRH The Prince of Wales’s Charity Polo Day at Flemish Farm. This exhibition polo match, which was attended by the Royal couple, raised more than £1 million for 11 of their smaller less well-known charities. Horsepower of the Italian variety was the star of the show at the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup Final, with Ferraris parading alongside the players before this high-goal match. Meanwhile, Becky Simpson and her team at La Martina continue to support the Club through its successful licensing agreement of the Guards brand. In addition, La Martina generously sponsors two key tournaments at the Club – the historic Varsity Day, giving students an opportunity to compete on some of the finest polo fields in the world, as well as the competitive Centenary Trophy. La Martina was also behind the beautiful shirts worn by the charity teams in the exhibition match, played as part of the Clé de Peau Beauté Guards Ladies Charity Polo Tournament Final. Thanks to some remarkable generosity from players, members and sponsors, we raised £37,000 for the Look Good Feel Better cancer support charity on this day.

As an Irish Guardsman, I am particularly delighted that our military membership is continuing to grow. Our Military Committee, particularly Lieutenant Colonel Tom Armitage and Major Jamie Hayward, have worked hard all year to ensure that our roots remain embedded in the military family. Thanks to a long-standing partnership with Laurent Perrier Champagne, the Club is always ready to celebrate a success or commiserate a loss, while having Clinova as a partner means that our players have plenty of cool refreshments after every game. Generous, long-term support from other key partners, including Zoe Jenkins and the team at Coworth Park, Martin Collins and Truefitt and Hill, ensures that the Club

continues to deliver at the very highest level to all of our Members. However, we would not achieve any of this success without the continuing and tireless support of our Playing and Social Members. I look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible when the season restarts in April 2024 and in the meantime may I wish you all the very best for the festive season. S

International Thoroughbred Polo Championships

Welcome to this 2023 edition of TenGoal magazine. Although our full season will be recorded in next year's Yearbook it has been fun to recall some of our equine highlights in this issue, including the Royal Windsor Horse Show and the International Thoroughbred Polo Pony Championships. Many thanks to Ramzy El-Ashkar for taking time out to talk about to me about his and his brother Rashid's polo life and I was privileged to sit in on a Look Good Feel Better wellbeing workshop in London this autumn, understanding how camaraderie and the support of others can lift the soul, even when battling the toughest of cancer treatments. With sporting ideas for Christmas, updates from our reciprocal clubs and news about Guards Polo Club's impressive charitable fundraising, there is plenty to read. I hope you enjoy it.

Sports Illustrated captures the Club’s early days

ur archivist Graham Dennis recently unearthed this wonderful magazine article capturing the early days of Guards Polo Club. The scenes were captured for Sports Illustrated by the renowned British photojournalist Larry Burrows, who was later killed during the Vietnam War. Larry was evidently at the Club for the final stages of the first edition of the Royal Windsor Cup and the Smith’s Lawn Cup. With Ratanada named as winners of the Royal Windsor we know that this was the Club’s first year and these matches were played during Ascot Week 1955. The 18

G UA R D S P O L O C L U B L U B

magazine is still published monthly in the USA today but when this article appeared the magazine was in its infancy, having only been founded some 10 months before these pictures were taken. The feature is a wonderful snapshot into the first few months of the Club – which will be celebrating its 69th season in 2024. Phrases such as “spectators field day under the June-blue English skies” and “it was as informal as a family picnic, with the royal children scampering about, the Queen and Duke relaxed and at home in their own backyard”, set a beautiful scene.

There was clearly a substantial royal presence on this day. The reporter refers to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH Princess Margaret, HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, HRH The Duke of Cornwall (now HM King Charles lll), HRH The Duchess of Kent, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and TM The King and Queen of Jordan. It must have been a wonderful day and looking at the pictures it is still recognisable as Guards Polo Club today. The grounds may be vastly improved but the setting is remarkably unchanged, some 68 years on. S

CANCER CHARITY GETS WELCOME BOOST Guards Polo Club was delighted to present a cheque for £37,000 to the Look Good Feel Better charity in October

T

he Look Good Feel Better Operations Manager Sarah Lenson and Director of Fundraising Ian Daniels visited the Club in person to receive this impressive sum from our Sponsorship Manager Tissy Sievwright and Financial Controller Pam Manku. The money was raised at the Clé de Peau Beauté Guards Ladies Charity Polo Final in early September. Players, Members, guests and spectators were hugely generous in their support of this cancer support charity that helps people cope with the effects of their cancer treatment. Sean O’Dwyer, Chairman of Guards Polo Club, said when the total was announced: “Once again Guards Polo Club players and members have shown their generosity by supporting the remarkable Look Good Feel Better charity to the tune of £37,000. This is the first time we have supported

the charity on this day and I want to thank everyone who bid, bought or played on our ladies’ day. Your support was invaluable.” Mark Flannery, CEO, Look Good Feel Better, added: “Cancer doesn’t discriminate – it can affect us all. Our workshops are led by expert volunteers from the beauty industry and provide vital support for many people living with cancer. They offer practical advice at an extremely difficult time. We are grateful for the support from Clé de Peau Beauté and Guards Polo Club and would like to thank everyone who took part in this fantastic event for their generosity. This enables us to continue to support people living with cancer, helping them feel empowered and less isolated. Thank you.” To find out more about the work of Look Good Feel Better read our TenGoal feature on page 72. S

There is still time to purchase the Club’s beautiful commemoration pieces celebrating the Coronation of HM King Charles lll. Earlier this year Guards Polo Club teamed up with Inkerman London, the creators of many of our memorable prizes, to create these bespoke glass bowls to commemorate the Coronation. Each bowl features both the Guards Polo Club logo and the official Coronation logo. The bowls are made in lead-free crystal and are handmade exclusively for Inkerman. The Coronation emblem displays the affection that HM King Charles has for the natural world, unifying the flora of the four nations of the United Kingdom: the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and the shamrock of Northern Ireland. Together, the flowers create the shape of St Edward’s Crown, with which His Majesty was crowned. The bowls cost £75 for the 13cm bowl or £105 for the 19cm version and are available in either colour option, cobalt blue or purple. Further artwork can be provided for an additional fee. Each bowl is presented in one of Inkerman’s signature boxes. The bowls can only be purchased directly from Inkerman but a percentage of each sale will come to Guards Polo Club. For more information or to purchase your own bowl please go to https://www. inkerman.co.uk/guards-polo-club-kingscoronation-glass-bowl

Previous winners include Gordon Ramsay. The remit for the chefs’ menus this year focussed on food waste and the creative use of ingredients. The NCOTY judges wanted to see how culinary skills, along with sustainable, local and global produce, were used to demonstrate an excellent understanding of ingredients. The dishes that Grahame created specifically for the final clearly displayed his style of cooking, taking classic flavour combinations and bringing them upto-date to ensure that both the flavour and the quality of the ingredients always shines through. All the finalists had to create a vegetarian starter and include a vegetable into their dessert. Grahame’s menu was an elegant dish of mushroom, celeriac and truffle, followed by the classic pairings of lamb, pea, and mint with the addition of Irish champ potato made with lamb fat. The dessert was a gorgeous chocolate & Guinness fondant tart with beetroot and blackberry. The Members can now look forward to seeing what delicious creations will be on the Clubhouse menu when Grahame and Harry Wilson, our wonderful Front of House Manager, open the doors to the Clubhouse on Saturday 13 April 2024.

LUXURY IN RIO DE JANEIRO WITH VIDALES

A

n absolutely unique and magnificent environment, between the sea and the mountains, with beautiful forests and wonderful beaches. This is the city of Rio de Janeiro, which was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), in 2012, as an Urban Cultural Landscape and declared a World Heritage Site. It’s in this area that Vidales Apartments Rio operates, an innovative company in the high-end real estate market in Rio de Janeiro, and Brazil. With a multidisciplinary team, we offer service with security, confidentiality, discretion, assertiveness, and professionalism. The luxury market in Rio de Janeiro is demanding and Vidales offers a portfolio of exclusive properties. Among them are

palaces and mansions, including the largest vertical mansion in Latin America, located at Praia do Flamengo, with a beautiful view of Guanabara Bay and the Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açúcar). The quadruplex was designed by a famous French architect, Joseph Gire (1872 – 1933), who also designed the Copacabana Palace, a landmark in the stunning landscape of Copacabana, a now world-famous part of Rio de Janeiro. The Palace was built by an order of the traditional Guinle family, an elite of Rio’s society, and it has been the venue for important dinners and receptions for heads of state, as well as several wellknown names in the arts, including Dorival Caymmi, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles’ George Harrison. The mansion maintains its original architectural features, and has five bedrooms, four

suites, 12 parking spaces and 3,600m². Having been in Rio’s real estate market for 10 years, Vidales offers advice ranging from selecting the best property options, analyzing documentation, carrying out negotiations, through to payment and post-sales – all focused on serving a highly sophisticated and demanding global market.

THANKS A MILLION (OR TWO!) embers, Players and Sponsors were once again hugely generous in supporting a wide range of charities throughout this season. One of our biggest fundraisers of the year was the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Charity Polo Day at Flemish Farm in early July. HRH The Prince of Wales was in action for the U.S. Polo Assn. team, winning this round-robin match and receiving the trophy from HRH The Princess of Wales. However although HRH was delighted at winning the match, the main aim of the day was to raise substantial funds and it did not disappoint. This year 11 charities nominated by the Royal couple have benefitted from the £1million plus raised on the day. Another impressive fundraiser for the 26

third sector was the Access Bank Day. Held in partnership with the Fifth Chukker Resort, Nigeria, and working closely with UNICEF in Africa, the primary objective of the day is to ensure the empowerment of underprivileged children through education and make sure that these children have the opportunity to dream, learn and grow. During this year’s event, Access Bank’s guests pledged to build a further 200 classroom blocks as part of this UNICEF initiative. In addition the communities surrounding the schools are also supported with boreholes for water as well as sewing and grinding machines to secure employment and stimulate economic and social development. The Look Good Feel Better cancer charity was overwhelmed by the £37,000 raised for them via our varied fundraising

Such a sum will allow more than 700 people to take part in the charity’s free cosmetic and well-being workshops as they battle tough cancer treatments. The Club was also delighted to welcome Dogs For Good, The Not Forgotten Association and Combat Stress to the Club for the first time. Their presence was not just about raising funds but also increasing awareness of their work In addition, the Power of Polo and the Ebony Horse Club made a welcome return to the Club – and our polo fields – thanks to the continued support of Out-Sourcing Inc. The Club also donated to the Household Cavalry Foundation following our Members’ visit to the London Barracks in early November. BACKSTAGE STARS

Guards Polo Club was delighted to team up with Chris Adkins and his Tally Ho Farm brand and restart our all-important Groom of the Month competition

T

his contest celebrates the grooms that work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure their equine charges stay match fit all season. A polo groom is not your average groom – it takes great skill and knowledge to keep these equine athletes playing at their very best from April through to September. Our Director of Polo, Antony Fanshawe and the Club’s Assistant Polo Manager, Tara Bown reviewed the stand-out performances in the pony lines alongside Chris and found several, award-winning grooming teams this summer.

Groom of the Month

Winning Grooms Chino Leiva, Juan Leiva & Luci Carballo Player Gustav Rausing’s Tempest polo team Chino Leiva, Luci Carballo and Juan Leiva won this award thanks to their excellent horse management. The judges noted that they always had water, rugs and ice boots ready and considering the weather everyone has had to battle this season, it is preparation like this, whatever the weather, that is crucial. In

addition the Tempest string’s turnout was always of an incredibly high standard. Chino started grooming when he was nine-years old and it was always his dream as a little boy to be a groom . “I started out working alongside Juan’s Dad actually,” Chino recalls. “That was almost 40 years ago!” Juan started grooming at

the age of 14 and went on to work for two big highgoal teams, King Power and Monterosso. Luci was a bit of a late starter compared to the Leiva boys as she didn’t start grooming until she was 16. “Both my parents worked in polo,” explains Luci, “and so I was brought up around the sport.”

In that same year Maia also met Maxi, who had been a polo groom for 12 years. He had been around horses from a very young age and started playing polo at his local club back in Argentina. “There are so many things to love about this job but for me the

main thing is seeing the ponies look well, happy and healthy and able to perform on the polo field. I know it’s a cliché but if you do a job you love you will never have to work a day in your life,” said Maia when she was told that she had won our Groom of the Month award.S

Winning Grooms Maia Ward and Maxi Gazzola Player Toby Bradshaw

Winning Grooms Ariel Otamendi, Roberto Leiva and Lautaro Leiva Player Pedro Harrison Club professional Pedro Harrison was delighted that his team of grooms were honoured this season. He was full of praise for Ariel, Roberto and Lautaro, saying: “They are awesome because they work well as a team. My horses are not only well prepared for matches but my grooms go above and beyond after the string has played. The team always make sure the ponies are hydrated after games and always gives them time before loading them back onto the lorry.” With feedback like this it is not surprising that Ariel, Roberto and Lautaro’s dedication to their equine charges was rewarded with the final Tally Ho Farm Groom of the Year Award for 2023. 30

Our May winners were Maia Ward and Maxi Gazzola who work for Toby Bradshaw. This duo became our first winners of 2023 because their work ethic stood out. The judges’ notes said that Toby’s ponies always looked super healthy and were always wearing the appropriate rugs. In addition, the ponies in always had plenty of hay and water in the lorry when they arrived at polo. Maia started grooming some seven years ago at home in Yorkshire. She fell in love with the sport when she was first introduced to it and immediately started both playing and grooming.

career, he found the training too exhausting and left after 12 months. So Howard’s attention turned back to polo. Always distinctive on the field in his white helmet – the novelist Jilly Cooper once referred to him as “storming on to the field like a god” – he was always a powerful presence on the field. Major Willie Loyd, the polo columnist for the Daily Telegraph and Horse & Hound in the 1980s referred to him as a “natural back”. Such power and quiet strength ensured Howard won the top polo tournaments in England during a remarkable polo

career that spanned more than four decades. His victories included adding his name to the high-goal Queen’s Cup five times – with Cowdray Park (1970, ’72), San Flamingo (1974, ’76) and the Boehm team (1982). In fact Howard reached a remarkable five Queen’s Cup finals in the 1970s, winning four of them. His name can also be found on the Gold Cup for the British Open Championship at Cowdray Park, the Royal Windsor Cup here at Guards Polo Club and the Berkshire’s Prince of Wales’s Trophy. In the 1980s, Howard found himself playing alongside the future King Charles lll for the Pahang team in the medium-goal tournaments. In addition to these impressive British honours, Howard recorded several successes abroad. Victories included

oward Hipwood, who died in June, was, without doubt, one of the greatest British polo players to have ever picked up a polo stick. His polo CV is remarkable a nine-goal handicap, the England captaincy and victories across all of the UK’s leading polo tournaments. What is more noteworthy is that despite such incredible success on the polo field, Howard was always modest when talking about his achievements. In fact, he was far more likely to remember the games that he lost than the honours that he had won! When Howard’s death was announced at the age of 73, following a short illness, it was not a surprise that the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) released the following statement: “An enormous presence on the polo field, Howard Hipwood played off a handicap of nine goals for more than 10 successive years and was regarded as one of the best backs in the world.” Howard was born in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1950 as his father was stationed there with the Royal Air Force. When the family returned to England Howard, at the age of around 12, alongside his older brother Julian, joined the local Pony Club. Firstly they were members of the Beaufort branch before moving on to the VWH. The latter played polo at Cirencester Park and it was here that this sibling duo’s love of the game began, going on to dominate the sport at home and abroad. However Howard nearly took a different sporting path. He was signed by Bristol Rovers Football Club in the early 1960s but surprisingly, when one considers his future

winning the World Cup in America and the Coupe D’Or in Deauville, France. He was also a finalist in the always competitive US Open Championship in Florida. At the height of his career Howard saw his handicap raised to nine goals. This was a year after his brother had been awarded a similar accolade and their achievement remains significant to all devotees of British polo as the Hipwood brothers are the only British players to have achieved such a handicap since 1945. Parallel with a brilliant domestic polo record, Howard’s international career saw him play for England in the first revival match of the Coronation Cup in 1971, against the USA. He went on to play in the Coronation Cup a total of 21 times, winning on six occasions. A

Great Gatsby dress code was the order of the night for Guards Polo Club’s end of season awards evening on the last Saturday of the 2023 season. The result was a gleaming, dazzling party that was befitting of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most famous of characters. Searcys, who was celebrating its first season managing the Clubhouse restaurant and bar, created a superb menu suitable for such a night, accompanied by Laurent Perrier Champagne aplenty. A highlight of the evening was a live performance by The Counterfeit Stones, a popular, Rolling Stones tribute band. This band was the perfect reminder of our late Chairman Brian Stein’s rock ‘n’ roll credentials as he knew the band personally and so had made the arrangements for the band to play at the Club. The original date had been scheduled for 2022 but was postponed due to the death of HM Queen Elizabeth ll. The Club’s current Chairman Lt Col Sean O’Dwyer paid tribute to Brian in his welcome address and everyone was delighted that Brian’s partner, Platina Tong was among the

guests. The room then raised their glasses to Brian – a tribute he would have much appreciated. So, although our season had started under a cloud, there was much to celebrate as the Club hosted some 604 games this season, as well as welcoming 12 new home elected players to the Playing Membership and successfully introducing Grounds Six and Eight into the playing schedule. The Club even started work on the final part of the Grounds Project, the redevelopment of Ground Four. During the evening John Collins presented his coveted Talacrest Best Young Player of the Year Award to Alfie Hyde. Alfie’s prize is a year’s playing membership of Guards Polo Club, the perfect reward for a strong season. Rashid and Ramzy El-Ashkar and their Limitless Polo Team have been at the heart of the polo at Guards Polo Club this season. Rashid finished 2023 by being named the Club’s Best Player off their Handicap, while Ramzy helped Stable Cottage win the Major General’s in the penultimate week of the season, one of several successes this year. So TenGoal caught up with Ramzy on his way to Argentina to find out what inspires these avid, polo playing brothers...

TenGoal: How did you get into polo? Ramzy El-Ashkar: “We got into polo through our father who used to play. In Ghana the grooms would walk the horses from the Polo Club to the house, about a 30-minute walk, and we would ride them in our backyard. We were about four or five years old. Rashid and I were the first of our generation of Members’ children to learn how to play polo at Accra Polo Club. However it wasn’t long before other children started riding and playing at the Club too.” Did you ride or compete in other equine sports before you picked up a polo stick? “We simply learned how to ride prior to holding a mallet.” Did either of you play any other sport competitively? “Rashid and I both play numerous sports. We competed in football, tennis, and swimming. In addition, I competed at a semi-pro level in football in Montreal, Canada, where I had a scholarship at university.” So why play at Guards Polo Club? “I have lived in London since 2018 and for the family, London has always been a summer destination. Through the Karim family (Kola, Tunde and Adebayo) we got introduced to 48

polo in the UK, meeting the right people, and started visiting Guards Polo Club on a regular basis. After seeing all the facilities in the Park, it was a no-brainer for us. The competitiveness, the level of the grounds, the tournaments and the staff – that is what really encouraged us.” Where else do you play polo? “We play polo in Ghana (where we started and where Rashid still lives), the UK and, since last year, in Argentina too.” What have been your individual polo highlights and the key moments of the 2023 season? “I think we can both say that our highlight for 2023 has been winning the Holden White together [a leading eight-goal tournament at Cowdray Park]. It was one of the very few tournaments that we had played together during this season and so winning such a prestigious tournament was just amazing. I would say it is a moment that neither of us is likely to forget. “And to be very honest, we can both say in general our highlight has been to put Limitless Polo on the map in the UK, playing and being competitive in the medium-goal (in our first season playing at this level) and in

the 18-goal. It takes a lot of time, patience and many other parameters to build a team and compete and so far, I think we have exceeded our expectations. Hopefully it will only get better. We would like to point out that it takes a lot of people to be competitive and so we would like to use this opportunity to thank all the Limitless players, staff and in particular the team behind the scenes, because without them we would not be here.” What is your ultimate polo goal? “Without doubt our ultimate goal would be to play the high-goal in the UK.” What advice would you give those young boys who first picked up their polo sticks at Accra Polo Club? “The main advice we would give to our younger selves – and it is the most important – is to learn to be good horsemen. By this I mean loving the horses and caring about them. Furthermore, I would say that polo is one of the hardest sports to learn how to play well so one should be patient; learn how to ride properly and gradually pick up the mallet. Start by playing practices and most importantly learn the rules of the game! It will take time and plenty of patience!” Who came up with the Limitless name? “Limitless has existed for several years now as 50

our niece started a charity/foundation for the Ghanaian Paralympians. We helped her out with the foundation and then started playing polo in Ghana under the Limitless Polo tag. We kept the name when we started playing polo internationally.” Are you competitive with each other? “Oh yes, we are very very competitive with

each other. We played the Accra Open in December 2022 against each other, and both made it to the finals. Trust me, we did not speak to each other for 24 hours before the final! After the game we became best friends again. Jokes aside, we very rarely play or compete against each other. Usually, we either play together or one plays the and other supports from the team tent – it just depends on the tournament level we are playing in.” Where will you be playing this winter? Any chance we will see you both in St Moritz? “The Ghanaian season is from October up until April, so Rashid plays the Ghanaian season and then the UK season. We will be in Argentina from mid-November until early December to play a few medium-goal tournaments. From my side, I try to go to Ghana at least five or six times during the Ghanaian season to play and I will also play in Argentina. “For now, due to our plans for playing polo between Ghana, the UK and Argentina, we unfortunately cannot schedule playing in St Moritz. It does take a lot of planning and dedication, bringing horses in early, getting them ready to play and so on. Maybe one day.” S

PRIZE GIVING WITH INKERMAN / TENGOAL

THE WINNING GAME Inkerman’s stylish red boxes and black and white ribbons are familiar at prize presentations at major sporting events throughout the UK. Guards Polo Club is very much part of the Inkerman family, ensuring players head home with prizes to treasure. Inkerman’s Founder Kiki Grigson talks to TenGoal about this leading prize-creating company and how it has become an integral part of sporting history

nkerman has been supplying tournament prizes at Guards Polo Club for almost a decade, helping to ensure that hard-won victories are always well rewarded. The creator of these stylish prizes was founded in 1996 on the fundamental principle of offering customers luxury gifts of exceptional quality and craftsmanship which are suitable for every occasion. Inkerman has evolved hugely over the subsequent 27 years. It started out as a corporate gift business supplying luxurious British gifts to individuals and businesses worldwide and has expanded into supplying trophies and awards for some of the most

prestigious sporting events, sponsors and venues in the world. Kiki Grigson, the founder of Inkerman, explained the company’s path to success in more detail. “We have grown organically over the past 27 years and have established ourselves alongside other recognisable British brands thanks to some great teamwork, an open approach to new designs and manufacture, some fabulous craftsmen and an unwavering resolve to keep standards exceptionally high,” said Kiki. “We believe our

success is a result of being perfectionists and by building on-going relationships with our clients, as well as having loyal and long-term employees. Some may say it’s old fashioned but we continue to talk to our clients to fully understand their needs.” The company, with its headquarters in East Sussex, is a staunch supporter of British craftsmanship and manufacture, working with a wide group of talented silversmiths, leathersmiths, pewterers, glassmakers, box makers, engravers and etchers throughout the UK. Designing and making bespoke gifts, trophies and awards for their clients is at the heart of Inkerman’s ethos, passing on G UA R D S P O L O C L U B

its wealth of knowledge and expertise to ensure it can go above and beyond the client’s expectations. Although it was never the company’s initial plan to move away from the corporate gift business it became clear to Kiki and her team early on that there were plenty of opportunities to expand. “It became apparent quite quickly that the company could organically expand into different areas,” said Kiki. “So, in the mid-2000s, we pressed forward with other areas of the business: personal gifts, school gifts and awards, sporting trophies and awards, charity associations and some select wholesale business. The increase in corporate sponsorship from 2000 opened up a whole new area of business which we hadn’t considered when we first started out. “Inkerman continues to grow today and we have recently purchased etching and laser machines to bring the personalisation in-house. This ensures faster lead times as well as some very bespoke designs. Our aim this year is to work with more sponsors and events, both at home and abroad, designing 54

and making even more trophies and awards.” Inkerman’s clients are invariably high profile, with many boasting an equally impressive heritage. The company ’s client roster includes the Grand National, Cheltenham Racecourse, Goodwood, The Derby, Metro Bank/ECB Legends Tour and DHL for Formula 1. A close relationship with their clients ensures that Inkerman can always create the perfect prize. The

relationship with Guards Polo Club is a good example of this. Inkerman understands the Club and its significance in the polo world and so can design trophies and prizes that resonate with the sport. “We have been working with Guards Polo Club for more than 10 years, supplying bespoke tournament trophies as well as gifts for the Club’s kiosk,” adds Kiki. “It is always a pleasure to work with the Guards team - working closely with them to create bespoke designs – and we always enjoy our visits to the Club; it certainly is a very special place.” Inkerman has recently completed a commission for the Football Association of Wales’s Bute Energy Cup for Women’s Football – an enormous step forward in championing women in sport. This latter award is one that Kiki is particularly proud of. “Being women-founded and women-led and with the growth and increased recognition of women’s sports, we would love to work with more women’s teams and competitions.” For details on the bespoke Guards Polo Club Coronation Bowl by Inkerman go to page 20. TE N GOAL / NÖVA CAV IA R

TASTE OF PERFECTION Reelika Matsumoto has turned to the home of her birth, Estonia, to create a unique, luxury, caviar brand, NÖVA, that blends Japanese heritage with cutting edge technology.

56

NÖVA CAV IA R / TE N GOAL

Why choose Estonia to be the home of NÖVA Caviar?

Reelika Matsumoto, founder of NÖVA Caviar, is originally from Estonia and it was suggested that the team should look into the opportunities there since Estonia is famous for its clean and pristine nature. More than 50% of Estonia is covered by forests and excellent water quality is crucial for raising healthy sturgeons. Reelika also wanted to do something positive for Estonia, including creating jobs. She also hopes this project will build new bridges between Japan and Estonia and so NÖVA has partnered with Hal Caviar, the number one caviar in Japan, which is regularly served at the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup.

Above: Reelika Matsumoto, the founder of NÖVA Caviar, with her husband David Matsumoto at this year's Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup Final at Guards Polo Club.

How does NÖVA Caviar compare to the more traditional caviars created in the more usual locations such as Russia and Iran?

“NÖVA Caviar is the result of a very unique fusion between Estonian farming techniques and technologies, combined with the know-how of Japanese caviar processing. Famous for his very precise and deeply refined touch, the Japanese caviar

master’s influence has given birth to NÖVA’s own and unique caviar products, presenting an elegant and perfect balance between texture, aroma and taste. “NÖVA sells only caviar which has been produced in our farm under our strict quality controls. NÖVA Caviar comes from clear water and high quality feed - even the salt is carefully selected. The NÖVA farmers put their hearts into raising the sturgeon, which is why we can call our caviar truly distinctive. If you compare NÖVA Caviar with other leading brands you can easily taste the difference.”

What was the biggest hurdle in setting up NÖVA Caviar?

“NÖVA started just before the global pandemic began. The team had planned to do many upgrades in the farm and so we had many delays with the deliveries of the machinery and other items that were needed because factories around the world were in lockdown. Unfortunately, the unstable situation set us back many months.”

“ The NÖVA farmers put their hearts into raising the sturgeon, which is why we can call our caviar truly distinctive.”

“A caviar master someone who has extensive knowledge about sturgeon farming and caviar production. It is an art because making caviar is all about timing – when the sturgeon is mature for harvest and then catching the perfect moment for harvesting the best quality caviar. The process of making good caviar begins with raising the fish, giving them the best quality feed and making sure they grow in optimal conditions to keep them healthy.”

What type of sturgeon do you 58

G UA R D S P O L O C L U B

use in NÖVA Caviar production?

“At the moment we have Baeri Fish ready to harvest. We also have young Oscietra, Sevruga and Beluga Fish growing at the farm.”

What are the hallmarks of an excellent caviar?

“Good caviar should ‘pop’ in your mouth and eggs should separate from each other when you roll the caviar in your mouth. It should not be mushy, have high salinity or leave a bad aftertaste.”

What makes NÖVA Caviar stand out in the luxury caviar market?

“The most unique aspect of NÖVA Caviar is the fact that it is a collaboration between Japan and Estonia. We have extensive knowledge from the team at Hal Caviar, which is considered to be the highest quality caviar in Japan and is served in many Michelin-star restaurants. We have adapted this Japanese know-how to our own production here in Estonia and result is excellent, high-quality caviar. We only use caviar which comes from our farm and

You talk about low impact conscious farming on the website - how do you ensure that in your production process?

“Our farm in Estonia uses a recirculating aquaculture system which means the water quality is constantly monitored and recirculated. In the process the water is cleaned. We add a maximum of five per cent new, fresh water into the system every day which means we do not waste any

natural resources. “The farm is almost zero waste due to the fact we reuse the water in the system. Even the fish faeces are used to fertilise the fields of local farmers. Due to a closed aquaculture system we do not need to use any chemicals or medicines to keep the fish healthy. We thrive through an environmentally-concious aquafarm.”

Where can I buy NÖVA Caviar in the UK?

“At the moment we are in not represented in UK but hopefully soon you will be able

What is the ultimate goal for NÖVA Caviar?

“Our ultimate goal is to educate people about caviar, to demystify and democratise it. Anybody can celebrate their special moments with caviar, it is not only meant for certain groups of people. Our aim is to show the many ways to eat caviar, that you can be really creative with it. There is a lot of caviar on the market and all too often it is not clear where it is coming from or even what sturgeon species it is from. “There is no universal classification for caviar like there is for wine. LOOK GOOD FEEL BE T TER / TENGOAL

MAKING LIFE BEAUTIFUL

I

n late October eight women, the majority wearing woolly hats although it wasn’t cold outside, walked downcast and subdued into a brightly lit room at the Macmillan Cancer Centre at University College Hospital in London. Just an hour later this same group of women were laughing and chatting, hats discarded, while they discussed lipstick colours and how best to reinstate lost eyebrows. I was sitting in on a Look Good Feel Better skincare and make-up workshop and these eight women were here to be supported and made to feel good about themselves after some gruelling cancer treatments. Although the ladies ranged in age from early 20s to late 60s they all had been through similar experiences due to their cancer treatments and were at this workshop to be made to feel special and be given the keys to retaining any lost confidence. Interest first flickered when the volunteer beauticians, Natalie and Marianne, handed out the Look Good Feel Better goody bags, packed full of skincare products and makeup. Natalie, one of more than 1,100 volunteers that work around the country for Look Good Feel Better, began by explaining the ideal cleansing routine – vital she insisted whether you wear make-up or not – and before long the hats came off and the cleanser went on. Natalie was keen to stress that sun block was a must all year for everyone and insisted that it should be applied after moisturising, never before. Soon there was a hum of lively chatter as Natalie gave a brilliant, yet easy-tofollow make-up demonstration, helping anyone that was unsure about application or colour. The longest discussion was on recreating eyebrows – invariably a casualty of chemotherapy. Some of those attending the workshop were happy to share their own secrets and Natalie and Marianne were willing to share their tricks of the trade too.

Guards Polo Club was introduced to a new charity this season, Look Good Feel Better. It aims to help people face cancer with confidence. TenGoal wanted to find out more so we sent our Editor, Diana Butler, to sit in on a skincare and make-up workshop in London to see transformation in action

This afternoon had not been about cancer – it had been about giving confidence and enabling this group to feel their best – hair or no hair After two hours, not only did every woman look great but the atmosphere in the room had transformed. There was a positive, upbeat mood and everyone left the session a little taller. This afternoon had not been about cancer – it had been about giving confidence and enabling this group to feel their best – hair or no hair. Some may query why Guards Polo Club should be raising money so that people can

have beauty treatments. However I saw first-hand that after only one Look Good Feel Better workshop these women were transformed. Not physically, but mentally. After just 120 minutes they were in a very different place – one full of hope and positivity. It was incredible to watch. So it is no surprise that Look Good Feel Better has a whole host of fans – men, women and young adults – who have experienced these unique workshops and cannot praise this charity’s work highly enough. “The skincare and make-up workshop was absolutely brilliant,” said Laura Pardoe from Gloucestershire who attended a workshop earlier this year. “Although I am quite used to applying make-up, I did learn a lot during the workshop. After cancer treatment, you do look different and learning make-up application tips and practical advice really does give you a boost. It shows that it really is worth making a bit of an effort to make yourself feel better. After the workshop all the ladies looked so beautiful and radiant.” Laura was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier this year. Intense treatment followed rapidly, at twice weekly intervals, and she has just finished her last chemotherapy session. “I attended the workshop on one of the hottest days of the summer and felt thoroughly flustered when I arrived. They put me at ease immediately G UA R D S P O L O C L U B

and even handed me a brilliant electric, hand-held fan to cool off! Everyone was so lovely and I was able to completely relax and enjoy the session. The goodie bag was incredible and my problem now is how to stop my daughters from using all the products! Everyone should sign up – don’t hesitate, just do it.” These workshops are not exclusively for women. Men can benefit too as cancer treatments can just as easily cause changes in male skin. Men may also suffer issues with beard and hair regrowth and so volunteers host dedicated skincare and grooming workshops for men. Robert Freemantle recalls his experience of a Look Good Feel Better Virtual [On Line] Men’s Workshop. “Ever since the workshop, things have started getting better and better,” Robert explained. “The life coach I met through the workshop, Tony, is performing miracles and my self-confidence is zooming upwards. I am so pleased that the urology nurses suggested this workshop… I am going to use every moment of the day and make sure I don’t waste any part of it.” Guards Polo Club raised funds for Look Good Feel Better as part of its Clé de Peau Beauté Guards Ladies Charity Polo Final in early September. Clé de Peau Beauté introduced the charity to the Club and is one of the many beauty brands that supports Look Good Feel Better with an array of free products. Thanks to your generosity though, we were able to donate £37,000 to the charity after our ladies’ day. That is the equivalent of 74 workshops for 10 people per workshop. Advice is given to women, men and young adults about changes during treatment to skin, eyebrows, eyelashes, hair and nails and how to improve body confidence confirm that will be money very well spent. It is important to highlight that the charity does not just deliver cancer support services in London, but in local communities across the UK. First set up in 1994, Look Good Feel Better runs workshops by expert volunteers in hospitals, cancer care centres, luxury hotels and spas across the country, as well as an array of courses online. Advice is given to women, men and young adults about

changes during treatment to skin, eyebrows, eyelashes, hair and nails and how to improve body confidence. The services are available to all ages, skin-tone and every type of cancer and cancer treatment. In addition, the workshops offer a relaxing environment for people to socialise, make friends and talk to others facing similar issues. It is clear that one of these workshops leaves people feeling empowered, motivated and less isolated – allowing them to not only look good but feel even better. And that feeling is priceless. TENGOAL / WINTER ADVENTURES

TenGoal takes a trip around the globe, searching out the extreme trips that might satisfy that competitive edge before the kickboards go back up at Smith’s Lawn and polo restarts

Skiing is the obvious adrenalin hit for players who are missing their match fix during the winter months. Black runs abound across Europe and North America, delivering pace and thrills aplenty. In fact the longest black run in the world can be found just a few hours’ drive from Smith’s Lawn, at the Sarenne ski run in Alpe D’Huez in France. At an incredible 16km, it descends from the summit of Le Pic Blanc across a glacier and into a valley. If that doesn’t quite tick the box then those with bigger budgets could consider heliskiing. Skiers or boarders take a helicopter to the top of a mountain, ensuring spectacular landscapes and exhilarating sport. 76

The arrival of snow brings plenty of other sporting opportunities too. Several travel companies offer heroic husky trekking across Scandinavia, recalling those intrepid days of the early explorers such as Scott and Shackleton. These trips can last several days, cooking over open fires, caring for your own team of Huskies and travelling between 25 – 40km a day.

Definitely creating memories that will last a lifetime. Not a holiday as such, but for those heading to St Moritz for the snow polo may also consider trying their hand at the death-defying Cresta Run, a natural ice skeleton toboggan track which was built in 1884. Depending on snow conditions, the Run is open from Christmas until late

February/early March. Lord Wrottesley was the first rider to break the 50-second barrier and still holds the World Record ( 4 9. 9 2 s e c o n d s ) . I n a n o t h e r p o l o connection, Carina Evans, wife of polo manager Nick Evans, became the first woman to complete a full run when the ban on women competing in the Cresta Run was lifted in 2018. Sporting challenge

Winter may not be the season for polo on grass in the UK but it is the time for hunting in the UK and Europe. Hunting holidays in Ireland often combine fabulous accommodation and food with the chance to experience some breathtaking hunting with some remarkable packs of hounds. The Dun Raven Arms in Adare for example not only boasts great links with some world-famous hunts, such as the County Limerick Foxhounds and the Galway Blazers, but also offers a much-needed valet service for your hunting gear and an early breakfast if required. Further into Europe there is a wide range of hunting and stalking opportunities, ensuring good sport in stunning settings. Poland, Spain, Greenland, Croatia, Austria and Hungary are some of the most popular destinations for deer stalking. Some countries even offer the opportunity to stalk 78

from horseback. There is also a chance to hunt red deer in the northwest regions of Patagonia in Argentina, although the season is not hugely conducive to polo players as the Argentine hunting starts in March. Hunting in Europe also offers the prospect of taking part in wild boar drives. From September to January this is a traditional sport in France and further afield. If winter plans are already sorted for this year, then revered gunsmiths Holland and Holland are already advertising a trip for next winter. A Bobwhite Quail hunting trip across three days in South Georgia, USA, is scheduled for November 2024.

A Bobwhite Quail hunting trip with Holland & Holland is planned for 2024.

Heat Quest

If it is warmth that you need in the winter months then the world really is your oyster. Trekking, cycling, diving or riding are all there for the taking. Several days riding through the dramatic area of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia can be booked with a click of your mouse, taking in the treeless steppes and mountain forests. Or swap your leather saddle for a bike saddle as a broad range of companies offer epic cycling trips across New Zealand, taking in mountains and beaches 80

along the way. If the lure of the mountains is calling then Nepal is a must for any bucket list. Due to its monsoonal climate the autumn (September through to early December) is the perfect time to visit, offering clear weather, sunny days and warm nights. The Caribbean has long been a winter polo destination but the turquoise blue sea offers other temptations to the adrenaline-hooked traveller. The popular time for diving in this part of the world is November to May, so is perfectly timed to fit around your polo.

RIVER RUNS BEST IN THOROUGHBRED POLO CHAMPIONSHIP Guards Polo Club played host to the first Lycetts International Thoroughbred Polo Championship at Guards Polo Club, featuring 50 horses ranging from two to eight years

T

he Earl of Tyrone’s River was named Overall Champion in the first edition of the Lycetts International Thoroughbred Polo Championship in mid-September. This stunning mare by Epaulette out of Anytimeatall won the Five-Year-Old Class and went on to be named the overall champion, earning Richard Tyrone £2,000 in prize money. River was one of 50 horses that took part in this prestigious championship, which aims to highlight the thoroughbred’s agility and temperament for polo. Every competitor was judged on its confirmation, turnout and polo schooling ability. There was a variety of judges including David Morley, the former 94

England international Henry Brett and the Chairman-elect of the Hurlingham Polo Association, Will Lucas. Many other familiar faces from the world of polo, including the HPA’s Chief Executive Anna Hall, watched from the Clubhouse Terrace, making the most of the Searcys delicious bar menu and the many jugs of free coffee. The competition, which was sponsored by Lycetts and organised by professional player Jack Richardson in conjunction with the International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses, saw a strong entry across all

four classes. There were individual class winner prizes of £1,000, thanks to some generous support from Godolphin Life Time Care, Tally Ho Farm, Ainsley Saddlery and Moigne Combe Stud. There were also prizes for the Best Turned Out in each class. These were sponsored by Emerson & Watson, our equine vets. Meanwhile, Oxford Polo supported the Best Overall prize. Although there was increasingly gloomy weather, atmospherically captured by Abi Hancock in many pictures of the event, there was a wonderful vibe throughout the Club all day. Jack should be congratulated for creating such a brilliant competition, perfectly highlighting the Thoroughbred’s unquestioned suitability for polo.

World Horse Welfare is the only charity that supports the responsible involvement of horses in sport. Ten Goal caught up with World Horse Welfare Trustee, HPA Council and Committee Member and former Polo player, Christopher Price CBE, to discuss the value he places on good welfare in our sport. “Horses have enriched my life for decades, through racing and riding for pleasure, but discovering the sport of Polo when I served in the Army provided me with a wonderful and exciting new challenge. But whatever role horses have played in my life one thing has remained constant: putting their needs, their welfare, above all else. “Over the last decade the focus on welfare across all sports involving horses has intensified. And as the public push back, demanding greater scrutiny of our sport we must respond, or risk losing our social licence to continue. “There is much being achieved to make

the sport safer for horses – after all, it is my view that eighty percent of a successful partnership on the field is down to the horses’ ability, keenness to do the job and enjoyment of the sport. Their role must never be diminished by compromising on any aspect of their welfare. “For nearly one hundred years World Horse Welfare has taken a pragmatic approach to good welfare. The reason I feel so passionate about their work is because so much of what they advocate is underpinned by robust research and extensive experience. They are welcomed to the table by governing bodies and policymakers, and their influence extends to all corners of the globe.

They are afforded this level of influence because they never conflate good welfare with sentiment in their mission to ensure that every horse is treated with respect, compassion and understanding. “I would urge anyone involved in the sport of Polo – whether an enthusiastic supporter, the parent of a passionate youngster or a ten-goal player – to support World Horse Welfare. By doing so you are supporting the promotion and improvement of our sport and the responsible use of horses in all sport, which will ultimately safeguard the sport we love.”

embers and friends of the Club rose to our Macmillan Coffee Morning challenge magnificently, raising more than £8,000 for this incredible cancer charity. Everyone’s generosity was even more remarkable as the Club had put out a call for auction lots only a few weeks earlier for our ladies’ day charity event. We should have known that our Members would not let us down though as we had a fabulous array of auction prizes for this always popular Clubhouse event. The lots ranged from a private tour of St George’s Chapel, Windsor, with drinks, to a £100 voucher for Season’s Kitchen, the fabulous, local restaurant owned by Playing Member Charlie Wooldridge. Another stand-out lot was a private tour of Windsor Castle, courtesy of Lieutenant General Philip Jones, Constable and Governor of the Castle. Our Macmillan fundraising had started a week earlier this year though thanks to the generosity of professional player Charlie Hanbury and his Lovelocks Stud. Charlie generously donated one covering to his home-bred stallion, Lovelocks Shadow. This impressive horse boasts a successful polo pedigree and our online auction – which we opened up to all polo players via the Club’s 104

social media pages - raised more than £1,000. As well as plenty of fundraising on the day, the Clubhouse was packed full of stalls so Members had the opportunity to get a head-start on their Christmas shopping. Chef Nick Hebditch made a welcome return to the Club, bringing with him another magnificent Macmillan-themed cake. Gerry Gibson was the successful bidder of this treat. With some fun games, including the always popular “spot the ball” competition and a packed tombola table, brilliantly managed by Pam Manku, this year’s event delivered for both Macmillan and everyone who attended. OVERCOMING INJURIES AND RETURNING TO PLAY

P

Mr. Jeremy Granville-Chapman

MBBS, MD, FRCS (Tr&Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon & Upper Limb Specialist

THE NEED TO SEE AN EXPERT

olo is a unique sport. It combines the athleticism of horse and rider with a contact stick and ball sport. Polo therefore carries significant risk of injury, both from falls or collisions and from overuse. As a former player and now an Orthopaedic surgeon, Mr. Granville-Chapman surveyed members of the Hurlingham Polo Association in 2016. 75% had sustained at least one sports injury from polo (e.g. tendon injury) and >50% had sustained an acute trauma (e.g. broken bone). So, while nobody wishes to dwell on injuries, they are unfortunately likely to be part of the life of a polo player. If you (or your team members) get injured, it is important that you are treated by an expert who has the experience and skill to manage your injury. They must also be someone who appreciates need for an individualised approach to get you back in the saddle as quickly and safely as possible. Many orthopaedic surgeons in the UK manage predominantly degenerative conditions and treat relatively few ‘true’ sports injuries. Picking your surgeon is therefore critical. As a military surgeon until 2019, Mr. Granville-Chapman treated military personnel referred from around the world with shoulder and elbow injuries

sustained during sport and arduous training. As such he is very experienced in managing acute trauma and chronic sports injuries. He has helped hundreds of patients return to full fitness in high-demand roles after injury. Mr. Granville-Chapman won prizes throughout his training, most notably the Gold Medal in the consultant fellowship (FRCS Tr&Orth) exams, an examination not only of knowledge but also of decision making - so you can be assured of sound advice as well as technical expertise. He has published on upper limb sports injuries, and he regularly teaches surgeons on the management of upper limb injuries. Mr. Granville-Chapman’s specialist practice in Windsor and Ascot covers all aspects of upper limb (shoulder, elbow and wrist) surgery. He has successfully treated polo players, both professional and amateur. He has excellent relationships with physiotherapists in the region and has rapid access to high-resolution (3T) MRI diagnostics. He has trusted colleagues who specialise in lower limb surgery to whom he can direct patients as needed. All this ensures he can offer an integrated and individualised treatment plan for all of his patients. So, if you are unfortunate enough to suffer an injury, do get in touch and you can be sure you will be seeing an expert who will do all he can to help you recover and get you back in the game as soon as possible. THAI POLO AND EQUESTRIAN CLUB

This stunning polo club is located close to Pattaya, some 150kms from Bangkok. Owned by Harald Link, owner of the high-goal Thai Polo Team which won the British Open in 2021, and Mrs Nunthinee Tanner, the club offers excellent equestrian facilities whatever your equine passion. In fact the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club can take much of the credit in securing Thailand as a go-to destination for professional and amateur players who are seeking good sport and excellent hospitality in the winter months. In addition to three full sized polo fields, stabling and veterinary clinic, Thai Polo and Equestrian Club is also home to an extensive equestrian facility that features an international crosscountry course that was used for the first Asia Eventing Championships. This club is also home to a La Martina Store. www.thai-polo-club.com

HELVETIA POLO CLUB, INDAITUBA, BRAZIL

The leading polo destination in the Sao Paulo region of Brazil can offer 45 immaculate polo grounds and a warm welcome in some breath-taking locations. So not surprisingly it was this club that Guards Polo Club turned to when creating its own Brazilian international event in 2014. With the amateur Brazilian players regularly playing off seven goals, the polo here is always impressive. Polo is played from March to October and guarantees great sport, but if you feel that your game needs a little boost, Helvetia also provides polo lessons at its own academy as well as other equestrian opportunities. www.helvetiapolo.com.br 124
