GEOLOGY.

A quarry is the evidence of man’s action on nature. A manufactured landscape*, an organic architecture created by the trace of the search for raw materials, which brings us back to the origin from which the raw materials come.

The captivating and unique nature of this landscape nourishes the concept. The access through a small opening in the monolithic facade links the visitor with the central space of monumental character, the “arrival to the quarry”, the Agora. It is the starting point to begin a new journey of museographic character, where the multiple exhibition halls - with materials of diverse characteristics are articulated around the Agora, creating a dynamic and versatile experience.

The building is divided functionally and physically into two universes. Two separate volumes that are woven and related to each other: the universe of the quarry (which houses the Agora, the Design Center, the cafeteria, and the multipurpose room) and the warehouse, in which the experience ends.

This warehouse acts and expresses itself as a container and distribution center, a translucent and neutral space, a canvas that grants the relevance of the scene to the stones and that is framed in the background by a forest that links us again with the origin of matter.

Technology plays a vital role because it allows the interaction of mobile devices with materials through QR codes. Thus, it immediately provides the user with the information, description, and costs of the selected materials, and allows the creation of a database of the contents of interest and the client’s history, as well as analyzing trends and purchasing behavior.

9 Esrawe Studio is a cross-disciplinary design atelier located in Mexico City. At Esrawe Studio, design is a living process of dialogue, linking the users with their surroundings.

It is all about feeling the evolution of design, which stems from an understanding of basic physical and emotional needs of a given moment, and in each context.

The studio breaths of dedication and persistence, passion and devotion, focusing on fine details and quality, always pushing boundaries and taking on new challenge.

12 Bethelhem based Studio AAU Anastas, designed the flat stone vault of the new shop of St Mary of the Resurrection Abbey in Jerusalem. The system is inspired by the invention of French Engineer Joseph Abeille (1673-1756), who patented in 1699 a special system that allowed the building of flat vaults.

The St Mary of the Resurrection Abbey is one of Jerusalem’s most valuable witness of crusaders’ architecture. The site is one of the five French domains in Jerusalem including the Tombs of the Kings, the Pater Noster, Sainte Anne, and the French General consulate. The church was built in the 12th century by the Crusaders. Its architecture offers a complete example of what was the architecture of the Crusaders in Palestine; a combination of different architectural elements that they brought from abroad and local elements that they found in situ.

THE FLAT VAULT

The newly built flat stone vault is an extension of the monastery’s shop. Architecturally, it consists of a juxtaposed volume addition.

However, the strategy of integration in the site does not rely on the formal aspect of the architectural element but rather on the construction techniques: the new shop is thought as a stone structure. Just like most of the architecture of the monastery – including the church’s crypt – the soundness of the structure relies on a delicate work of stereotomy.

The columns of the new shop are made out of massive stone, and the ceiling is a flat stone vault composed of 169 interlocking voussoirs.

The system is inspired by the invention of French engineer Joseph Abeille (1673-1756), who patented in 1699 a special system that allowed the building of flat vaults.

The design for the new shop is based on an innovative construction principle, literally weaving stones together to achieve the first reinforced flat stone vault of such a scale.

The techniques used for the construction rely on novel design and simulation techniques of the structure’s structural behavior, as well as on fabrication and mounting methods allowing for the assembly of precise topological interlocking. The extension of the monastery’s shop – in such a heavy historical context - is above all an attempt to adapt existing construction principles to novel design and fabrication methods as well as a specific local stonemasonry know-how.

The flat stone vault echoes stone construction techniques, inherent to the monastery’s architectural history and to the crusader’s architecture in Palestine, in a contemporary way.

Thinking of a project as a process is the only common thread running through our work. Beginning the thinking of a project at the opposite end of the planning spectrum, helps us merge into the deep understanding of local know-hows, and capacities of widening or subverting the initial end result to new uses. We consider the process as a means of minimizing energy consumption between design and realization. Working directly with factories and artisans enables to optimize the energy consumption in function of the resources available.

18 This project is part of a personal exploration where different volumes and the void generated between them are the protagonist.

The volume was proposed as a large white box that has been excavated, with different “cubes� of various materials (wood, white stucco, etc.) appearing within.

The social area on the first level was turned with a dual purpose: First, to lay out the social area on the first level so that it overlooks not only the canal in the back of the house, but also the pool area and boardwalk. Second, to break the continuity of the orthogonal walls of nearby houses, generating a particular vantage point from the street leading to the canal.

MEETINGS

The church is the last building, in order of construction, of the parish centre designed by studio continiarchitettura. The complex includes sporting and recreational facilities, spaces for education and meeting places, creating an urban system that promotes community life.

The project, developed from a competition held in 2006, is deeply rooted in its context, both through the disposition of its volumes and the use of local materials.The relations with the surrounding settlement are further enhanced by the pedestrian path that passes through the parvis, which extends in the large square garden. This space is bordered by a simple wall on the southern side and by a closed portico towards the main road.

A fundamental element of the project is the public pedestrian path that cuts through the complex, separating the church from the volumes for the parish activities and suggesting possible urban connections with the surrounding public areas.

The bell tower, placed towards the main street and the settlement, indicates the position of the parish centre to the surrounding area, thanks to its height. The exterior of the church is characterised by its faรงade in slabs of travertine forming a filter that allows glimpsing inside the building. The interior accommodates a large suspended elliptical velarium, place for the assembly and space for the liturgy. The elements for the liturgy (baptismal font, ambo, altar, seat, crucifix and tabernacle) are placed along a path that cuts the chancel longitudinally and reaches a garden on the back of the church, in which an olive tree is planted.

The assembly dispositions follows the dictates of the Second Vatican Council, with the chancel surrounded by the seats for the believers, forming the essence of the Church. The ambo and the altar are placed on the foci of the ellipse, facing each other, emphasizing the equal dignity of the Eucharist and of the Word.

The magnificent artworks in travertine by Giuliano Giuliani, placed inside the church, spiritually define the places of the liturgy.

27 Hugo Mijares The studio_ continiarchitettura carries out activities in the field of architecture and urban planning, while maintaining an artisan dimension, it makes use of a constant relationship with a network of professionals and companies in the sector.It deals with the design of new buildings, both public and private, and the restoration and recovery of historic buildings, with particular attention to the relationship with the landscape and the pre-existing buildings and the technological aspects related to sustainability.

30 The manor house is set in a rock wall that determines its shape. The access to the villa is located on the highest level, on the street level, where the large garage area is located and, by means of a panoramic lift or a large staircase in brushed alabaster travertine, you can reach the level of the living area. The living area is about 150 sqm plus the large “L-shaped� terrace that communicates on one side with the garden.

Large full-height windows offer an excellent sea view and, on the opposite side, a characteristic zen garden created in the inlets from the rocky wall. The living room is divided into two rooms separated by a sliding glass portal: the first room contains three sofas and a large dining table, the second one the kitchen island made of sintered stone and orobic arabesque marble and, more hidden, the technical kitchen with professional equipment.

The orobic arabesque marble staircase and the lift connect the living area with the master suite on the first floor and the pool floor. The sleeping area on the upper floor of about 150 sqm is composed of a large bedroom with adjoining sitting room, a study, two dressing rooms and two bathrooms, one in brushed alabaster travertine and the other in black Tunisian marble.

The room is characterized by a large corner window overlooking the sea and a large retractable French window that communicates with the large terrace.

The lift leads to the roof terrace which offers a unique view of the gulf and is equipped with sofas and seats placed around a suggestive minimalist gas fired fireplace.

From here, thanks to a staircase embedded in the rock, it is possible to reach the highest part of the hill, where there is a vegetable garden. Going down instead to the swimming pool floor, near the hall of the stair-lift landing, we have two guest rooms equipped with private bathroom and dressing; going on we find the cinema room and further on we enter the SPA. From here you enter first the Gym room and then the Pilates room.

The pool house is characterised by a large retractable window of 6 metres that leads to the infinity pool in dark brown sintered stone that brings the colours of the water closer to those of the sea on the horizon, giving the sensation of great depth and loss of sight.The entire lighting system is controlled by a complex home automation system which, in addition to the light, pilots the electrical system, the air conditioning system, the sound system and the alarm system patiently developed by the installer GianpieroCapponi, Massimo Ornato, Alberto Canavese and the fundamental contribution of Zumthobel for the engineering of the lighting par.

The Yarmouk private villa is home to two brothers and their families in Kuwait.

The volume is divided in the center of the plot into two identical units housing the independent quarters of each of the two families. A series of light wells and balconies throughout the house, along with a discreet garden space on the ground floor, focuses on the project’s main narrative of diffused natural lighting.

The basement of the house and its roof terrace cap the building with elements of unity and interaction, where the siblings and their families are able to get together and socialize. The basement includes a large banquet hall with light wells on either side to bring in ample natural light. The room, covered completely in travertine, sets a more classic and elegant atmosphere for larger gatherings. The basement also includes parking facilities for 10 cars and a staff quarters, also naturally lit.

The independent units follow an identical plan although the form is articulated to disrupt symmetry. The ground floor houses the social areas for each family and is flanked by a very private garden that lights up the interiors through large sliding windows. Vertical circulation is organized along the middle of the house and the living spaces organized along the building periphery to maximize natural light. The first floor houses the bedrooms in a similar way along the outer edge, including a sky-lit communal area and a kitchenette in the center.

The materiality of the interiors is driven by the hierarchy of the space, ranging from a dramatic music room finished in an aptly titled scandalous marble, to the almost Scandinavian simplicity of the upper levels that houses the bedrooms, pantry and the informal reading room. Subtle warm tones, achieved by a combination of silver travertine cladding with white oil finished ash parquet, set the mood for the ground floor living and dining areas.

Studio Togglewas established in 2011by Architects Hend Almatroukand Gijo Paul George. In 2015they joined forces with Rui Gonรงalvesand Pedro Varelaand established Studio Toggle Porto. The practice focuses on logical design and problem-solving techniques with a specific emphasis on Architecture and Urban Design. We believe in a balance between the opposites, that form follows function, the simplicity is complex, and that even chaos can be organized. 42 The project was achieved by linking all the interior spaces with the exterior by gardens and terraces, allowing energy savings and natural light.

The program is distributed in an L shape, creating a set of openings and transparencies that blur the interior-exterior limits. Concrete works as a structure and finished at the same time, achieving a palette of materials.

The program was divided into two: the first part, with access from the main street, are two floors with social and family spaces open to the garden and terrace.

With access to the secondary street were two levels with services and a double height garage / lounge. The main facade opens into the east side garden. Lattice, panels and sliding doors were created to generate privacy.

We went through the public area in the background to take advantage of the views and the sun. To maximize the virtues of the site, the social area is located in the back and the family space in front by sun.

Landscaping was used as a strategy to link with the site, exercising it as a compositional and decorative element. The upper floor is offset from the ground floor to generate a continuous terrace and allow operable windows from floor to ceiling, achieving natural ventilation and generous views from the bedrooms.

For a responsible architecture we use passive technology through sun study, cross ventilation and the use of thermal materials for energy saving. The roof is a flat and clean surface of 257 m2 that captures up to 15m3 of water in a single rainy event. The water treatment equipment separates the clean water from rain and purifies it up to 30m3 in one day. The house accumulates drinking water for up to 30 days without the need for rain or water from the public network.

48 Plato, one of the earliest thinkers and writers about democracy, predicted that letting people govern themselves would eventually lead the masses to support the rule of tyrants.

In classical Athens, the birthplace of democracy, the democratic assembly was an arena filled with rhetoric unconstrained by any commitment to facts or truth. Aristotle and his students had not yet formalized the basic concepts and principles of logic, so those who sought influence learned from sophists, teachers of rhetoric who focused on controlling the audience’s emotions rather than influencing their logical thinking.

In mathematics, a minimal surface is a surface that locally minimizes its area. This is equivalent to having zero mean curvature.

The term “minimal surface” is used because these surfaces originally arose as surfaces that minimized total surface area subject to some constraint.

Physical models of area-minimizing minimal surfaces can be made by dipping a wire frame into a soap solution, forming a soap film, which is a minimal surface whose boundary is the wire frame. However, the term is used for more general surfaces that may self-intersect or do not have constraints. These designs are milled from a single piece of marble on a 9-Axis Robotic Machine.
