FUEL TANKS: Five REASONS TO BE OUT WITH THE OLD. There are probably thousands of old-style, above ground, gravity-fed fuel tanks on farms all around Alberta. They’ve served producers well, but maybe time and technology have passed them by and it really is time to move on. The fact is there are far better and safer options to old-style fuel tanks that offer greater convenience, security, economy and environmental stewardship. For example, double-walled fuel tanks that sit on the ground, not above it, and are operated with an electric pump, embody all these advances. It’s a definite step up in on-farm fuel storage and accessibility.

The pros and…pros

There are a lot of good reasons to consider upgrading to a double-walled fuel tank, but here are the top five that make it an idea whose time has come. Reduce delay. As farm equipment gets larger, so do the Fuel tanks. It can take forever to fill a 200-gallon tank by gravity, not to mention that the equipment itself is getting taller, so it’s harder to get gravity on your side when you’re filling the combine. Because double-walled fuel storage tanks are pump operated, they can move 20 to 30 gallons of fuel a minute for faster fillups and fewer delays during busy seasons. Plus they’re bigger, so you don’t have to call for fuel delivery as often and can ensure you have more fuel on hand during peak times. Hedge against price hikes. More fuel storage space means more flexibility when it comes to purchasing fuel. If you get a bigger system, you can hedge against sharply rising gas prices. In other words, if you fill a 1,000-gallon fuel tank today at $1/L and if the price goes up to $1.10/L the following week, well, a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks. Larger tanks mean you can stock up when you see a good price. Protect against theft. Frankly, it’s just too easy to steal fuel from an above ground gravity-fed tank. Thieves simply cut the hose and take what they want, leaving the rest to spill on the ground, so not only have you lost fuel, you’ve got a big environmental mess to clean up. is and who has access to it. Protect against injury. Because they rely on gravity, old fuel tanks are usually perched on some kind of structure where risk of injury is higher during filling, fueling and basic maintenance. With on ground fuel tanks, it is safer for farmers, as well as the petroleum employees who come out to fill them. Plan for the future. Double-walled tanks are far less likely to leak than older single-walled tanks. And this is particularly important on two fronts: first, today’s fuel can actually contribute to leakage in old tanks (biofuels scour the insides, removing rust and dirt, uncovering cracks and holes and contaminating the fuel itself in the process); and second, whatever the cause, a leaking tank can lead to a big environmental cleanup bill when it comes time to sell the farm, or pass it on to your kids.

Double-walled fuel tanks come in many sizes, from 500 gallons up to 25,000 litres, with the 1,000-gallon and larger tanks being the most popular. A 1,000 gallon tank, including pump, can be had for under $4,000, which is not a huge dollar investment given the benefits it offers over old, above ground tanks. As well, you need to select an appropriate site and prepare the ground properly to avoid any environmental or settling issues, and you’ll need to be a qualified electrician to hook it up. Bigger, doublewalled, on the ground fuel tanks can alleviate some of the hassle associated with busy times on the farm and can be a good investment for the future. proTection & Monitoring WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE CAN HURT your profits! Application of Protect-It® Both the Canadian Wheat Board and the Canadian Grain Commission recommend cleaning and treating your bins with approved insecticides before loading them with new crop. Protect-It® is registered for use on all grains and seeds, and in empty structures such as silos and elevators where grain is stored. Empty Bin Treatment Infestation problems often occur because insects are lurking in empty bins. Before filling, treat the empty bin with Protect-It®.

Spray Application Mix 1.5 kg of Protect-It® into 10 litres of water. Spray inside surface area at a rate of just under 5L per 1000 ft2 (50ml/m2). Grain Treatment at Harvest To prevent infestations, mix Protect-It® into the grain as it enters the auger or conveyor feed system during transfer to storage. See label for application to new crop.

Temporary Grain X Storage protection from wildlife Spills around or from a grain bag will attract deer, rodents and other wildlife. With the practice of bagging grain and leaving it in the field for later use becoming more common, farmers now have to deal with issues on how to protect it. You need something more than a simple one-wire electric fence. You could put more charged wires on the fence to discourage the deer from jumping the fence or nosing under it. A very affordable solution is to add a second line of posts three feet behind the first and to put your new conductors (at heights of about 21 and 48 inches) on these new posts. This will add more of a deterrent power than simply adding new wires. One reason for the added effectiveness is the inner wires can run quite close to protected shrubs, giving deer a good landing place if they choose to jump the fence; while the outer wire is far enough away from the shrubs to prevent browsing from outside the fence. Another reason is that deer have poor close-in depth perception. As a result, anything averse (like an electric fence) that has a 3-D element and makes them wary and far more reluctant to mount a challenge than they would be if the 3-D element were missing. Materials for a fence like this are the same as those for the one-wire fence (typical materials for such a fence include a Power Wizard Electric Fence Energizer, insulated electric fence wire, insulated wire for connecting the charger to the active wire, an active poly-wire mounted on insulators and fiberglass posts, metal posts supplementing the fiberglass posts at a gate and corners, gate and corner accessories, and a ground rod wired to the charger’s negative terminal), but one obviously needs more posts, poly-wire, insulators, and corner and gate accessories. Depending on the area, 3-wire electric fences that have to deal with parched or deeply frozen soil run into trouble. Dry or deeply frozen ground

won’t carry a charge from the target animal’s feet over to the ground rod, and so the animal will fail to get a shock. You can remedy things somewhat by running a heavy wire along the fence line on just under the ground and connecting this to the charger’s negative terminal. Then the charge will only need to travel from the deer’s feet over to this wire in order to be sure of reaching the charger’s negative terminal, thereby completing the circuit and ensuring that the target deer gets a shock. Where there are severe grounding problems, large deer populations, established deer paths, a large area to be protected, or commercial crops (vineyards, orchards, etc.) with high value being threatened, it becomes useful to seek more robust answers. Probably the best and most permanent answer is a high-tensile electric fence. If you build it tall (6 feet is a good height), the fence reaches a height where few white-tails or other deer will leap over marginally visible wires; so jumping ceases to be an issue. The tension in the wires eliminates accidental contact between wires, making it practical to alternate positively charged and neutral wires, thereby resolving any grounding issues raised by dry or frozen soil. The wires under tension and the posts in the ground are more firmly set than the comparable wires and posts in a baited fence, so maintenance problems are much reduced. And since the fence features relatively thick galvanized steel wire, electrical conductivity is not an issue, even in a fence many miles long.
