e are celebrating our 13th anniversary of the magazine. Thirteen years!

At conception, the vision for the magazine was simple: to feature Art, Food, History, Life, and Nature in our corner of PA, NJ, and NY. It’s written on our logo.

The times have changed, but we still have the same focus— to be a fitting and beautiful tribute to all that is right with the world.

After all these years, this area continues to amaze me. There's never a dearth of new topics to explore and write about.

Take History, for example. Here, the history literally comes alive for me. I think one reason for that is the simple fact that we are not “suburbaned-out.” You can still drive down country roads and imagine how the old timers lived and what has transpired here. Personally, I love to do this.

From the earliest known oral and written histories of the area, be it the Native Americans, the challenges and stories of the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and beyond, old documents, buildings, mills, and houses are preserved in the flesh or in museums and speak to me.

And what about Art. Artists and crafters live throughout our region; many are masters at their trade. We are home to makers skilled in wood, clay, metals, textiles, and more, not to mention one of the premiere craft schools in the country, where classes and workshops are available in many media.

Art studios are a welcome, sometimes hidden refuge, many situated on these old country roads, surrounded by rivers and lakes, grassy fields, and lush forests...which brings me to Nature.

There is a sense of ease, a no rush/no traffic mentality to living out in the country that just doesn’t exist in the more congested parts of the states that we serve. Here, nature is the star of the show, and I have learned much about our natural environment and the amazing wonders of the Earth through my work with The Journal.

Life is always an interesting category that focuses on the many different aspects of living in the tri-state region. From capturing conversations with visiting dignitaries, actors, musicians, and authors, to personal reminiscences of local folks, life is, of course, a poignant topic to read and write about.

Food conjures up memories. It could be just a wafting aroma from the pot of soup cooking on the stove or the color of a ruby red grapefruit half that brings us back to another place. Although food is essential, farm-to-table and sustainability are more than just buzz words in our area. Our Food section covers everything food related—from local farms and farmer markets to ethnic holiday celebrations. And we’re always lucky when we can publish delicious recipes shared with us by our reader base.

For thirteen years, we have been committed to sharing the very best of the area with our readers, and we look forward to continuing to do so.

Welcome to the Early Spring issue of The Journal. Enjoy!
