ALICE GIANI MARGI CUTTING-EDGE ABAYAS Face-to-face with Alice Giani Margi and her new “Nero Sublime” fashion collection: Italian eclectic talent blends into Middle Eastern culture

Photos Nero Sublime collection by Abdullah Al Musharaf Photos previous collection by Marco Nero

Hello Alice, first of all tell us about your background: how did you approach the world of fashion? Did you have any fashion experience before moving to Riyadh? I moved to Riyadh due to my career in the equestrian world, I used to work as an instructor and a stable manager. I had never worked in the fashion world, even though I always had a passion for drawing, design and painting. In Saudi Arabia, I immediately challenged myself with the world of abayas and with women’s need to cover themselves from head to toe in public places. Leading a very active life, I could not find on the market any comfortable clothes that did not get in the way during my daily activities, and with the minimal style I was looking for. And that’s how I started to design and create a new collection of high quality 100% made in Italy abayas: they are made with innovative fabrics, suitable for high temperatures but comfy and functional at the same time, thanks for example to the use of pockets, zip and hoods with a hair-lock system. With this new abaya engineered concept, women do not have to worry anymore about their hair coming out of the hijab. What reason drove you towards modest fashion and its values in particular? Initially it was a natural choice originating by a real need, but later on it turned into a more conscious choice. Modest fashion in recent years has been gaining more and more consensus for big brands in all the markets of the world, this shows how the “modest” way of life does not belong only to the Arabic culture, but to many other cultures and situations in the world; we could say that “modest” nowadays looks more like a personal choice, a universal value involving several aspects of our life. Do you sell your collections both in Italy and abroad? Yes, my collections are 100% handmade in Italy and they not only address Arab countries customers, but all women in the world who wish to approach the modest style in a very personal, unique

COVER STORY Nero Sublime collection and stylish way. It’s amazing to see that my abayas can be styled in so many different ways, that’s one of the greatest satisfactions in my job; this is an extremely versatile garment, combining tradition and modernity. Functionality and versatility are key-features in your collections, do you have a specific client-target in mind? My clothes are designed for young, modern women who want to dress in a modest style without giving up to comfort, quality and elegance. Students, working women who divide their time between career and family... real women who live real lives, away from the trends and the ephemeral lights of glossy shop windows, embracing a timeless style and elegance. They are my muses and they continue to inspire my activity.

OUT & ABOUT IN FLORENCE

Known all over the world as the cradle of Italian culture and style, Florence can still astonish the most demanding tourists, accompanying natural and architectural beauty with exclusive services and customized experiences according to travelers’ taste, from food to fashion, up to pottery and design. Craftsmanship is the value they all have in common

11.00 am | BRUNCH Partly a museum, partly a place for shopping, partly a pleasant hangout: this is the latest idea born from the eclectic mind of GUCCI’s creative director Alessandro Michele. Opened a few weeks ago, Gucci Garden is definitely the new place-tobe in Florence. Inside the historic “Palazzo della Mercanzia”, you can find a store with unique items and limited edition pieces, an exhibition area and the Gucci Osteria restaurant run by starred chef Massimo Bottura; he created for this new location an easy-chic menu, perfect for a brunch during your city trip.

12.00 pm | SHOPPING of fashion follow one another, shopping in Florence can be a unique and enriching experience, looking for small independent brands, shops with authentic flavor and craftsmen able to tell a story with their own creations. All jewelry lovers can find here a wide range of creations with a refined design, in which an eccentric aesthetic joins the high quality of raw materials. Impossible not to stop by ANGELA CAPUTI GIUGGIÙ, a stone’s throw from Ponte Vecchio, the “kingdom” of one of the most famous Italian jewelry designers in the world, whose collections have been exhibited in museums such as the Metropolitan in New York. On the other hand, for the innovative form and for the totally original design, the pieces handmade by MILUSI FIRENZE stand out, able to reconcile vintage and futuristic atmospheres following the most contemporary trends. If clothing is your forte, even in this case Florence offers several ideas for getting unordinary souvenirs. Our suggestion, therefore, is to hunt for small independent shops that can offer special objects, such as BOUTIQUE NADINE on the Lungarno, or MIMI FURAHA, a small and charming atelier that focuses on a cool style search. Among curious vintage pieces, accessories and 100% made in Italy collections, these stores will not only offer you garments, but a full shopping experience where details and refined atmospheres are their pride and joy.

16.00 pm | WELLNESS Time to chill out! This outstanding spa is located within Giardino della Gherardesca, the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze’s 11-acre private garden. The spa uses a bespoke range of natural products formulated by one of the world’s oldest pharmacies in the world, the “Officina ProfumoFarmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella”. The spa lounge’s chic cream and black interior provides the perfect backdrop for carefully chosen pieces of classical art, while the nine treatment rooms in the main building have stunning floor-toceiling windows, contemporary mosaics and polished oak floors. The true highlight is the opulent VIP Couple’s Suite: located in a separate building, it has corniced ceilings, a freestanding bath and a fireplace in the lounge area. To ensure absolute discretion, the extensive windows face directly on to the Suite’s own private garden area. Allow your body to experience a state of total relaxation over three delicious pampering hours, selecting one of their top treatments called “Sense of Well-Being”. The treatment consists of an eight-step ritual including a foot soak, rose water toning treatment, Tuscan exfoliating scrub and a pureness facial. If you wish to take home one of these beauty products, a visit to the Officina Santa Maria Novella is a must. Just as the Uffizi gallery, this historical place is now listed in any florentine grand tour as one of the not-to-be-missed locations. More than a pharmacy, it is considered a temple, a place where the original frescoes dating back to 1300 host fragrances and timeless lotions based on the Dominican friars’ ancient recipes.

THE DIGITAL ERA OF FASHION In this issue we had a nice chat with Nazanin Karimkhani, Communication Strategist at Moodalisa.com. Fashion designer and web specialist, Nazanin tells us about her eclectic talent and creativity.

Hello Nazanin, can you please describe us the path that brought you to your current position? Hello! My name is Nazanin and I am from Tehran, Iran. I decided to move to Milan, Italy, 4 years ago to begin studying for a Master degree in Fashion Design. Fashion and communications are my biggest passions. How would you describe your role with Moodalisa. com? With Moodalisa, I am preparing and creating material and images for the e-commerce site and App, as well as newsletters and social media feeds in line with the established guidelines. I usually collaborate with the Marketing Manager and Merchandising department to prepare the communication strategies, which help to

Of course luxury Italian brands are being followed more even in Middle-East. But the fact is that the numbers of people who are becoming interested in other brands with nice, good quality products are quickly increasing even though these labels are not very well-known yet. One reason for this, is that bloggers and influencers are trusted by consumers even if the brands are not so well-known. As an example, Pomikaki bags now have their Middle-Eastern followers and Feleppa dresses are becoming highly-desired through our social media.

SCENT OF A WOMAN

Among increasingly refined aromas and home fragrances, the best of made in Italy artisanal perfumery focuses on innovative proposals when it comes to sensorial effects, even though tradition and authenticity are still considered key-values. Flowery, fruity, or spicy, each fragrance can be matched with a modular kit of cosmetics, for unusual combinations.

TUSCAN LANDSCAPE All the colors and atmospheres of the typical Tuscan landscape are contained in this collection of 100% natural products, not tested on animals and made in the name of authenticity. The ERBARIO TOSCANO product range suggests a very precise imagery, made of nature and genuine elements, travel souvenirs among the Tuscan hills and aromas coming from the local vegetation. So you can find the olive, Tuscia berries, drops of resin and hints of grapes as key-fragrances of these lines, designed for the body and for the hair, as well as candles and home perfumes. Respect for tradition and a continuous ability to renew themselves without distorting the original essence of the family business are the ingredients of a success that has brought these fragrances into the best international boutiques.

Back in the 80s every Italian girl had got a Naj Oleari satchel bag in her closet, and the contemporary fashionistas who love vintage cult pieces probably still keep it in their wardrobe as a nostalgic memento. The Naj Oleari imagery made of micro naive prints, playful motifs and pastel colors,

is now debuting in the world of cosmetics, transferring the brand values into a vibrant and perfect beauty line for today’s new millennials. With a solid background evoking concepts like quality, design and Made in Italy, the new NAJ OLEARI BEAUTY line is made up of 45 types of products, where details make the difference: the “cherry” patterned packaging, the refined decoration in rose gold, the natural ingredients and the charming fragrances. In fact each product is based on a specific formula, designed to ensure maximum comfort textures, and exclusive perfumes created in collaboration with Le Maȋtre Parfumeur. Sugar and vanilla harmonies recall the taste of marshmallows in the new-generation lipsticks, while the nail products stand out for their fruity tones. In the kaleidoscope of irresistible colors embracing eye shadows, lip sticks and nail polishes, two new entries have to be watched out: the Glitter Eyeliner for a shiny, metallic gaze, and the Smart Hair Touch-Up pencil for the instant retouching on the go.

BLOOMING PEONY Its name is “Peonia Nobile” and it belongs to one of the leading labels in the world of Italian master perfumers: ACQUA DI PARMA. Always synonymous with class and sobriety, this brand has been able to keep a contemporary allure, while maintaining the ancient formula of its unchanged eau de cologne, thus exerting its appeal on a public of refined connoisseurs. The vibrant notes of black pepper are combined with soft, raspberry notes, up to the flowery heart of tis essence, where peony and geranium welcome the sense of smell. The bottle opts for the linear silhouette of the first eau de cologne bottle created in 1916, lit by liquid rosé shades as an hymn to femininity.
