India’s second lunar exploration mission to the Moon - Chandrayaan 2 - that had the ambitious goal of putting a lander on the lunar surface, failed to make a smooth soft-landing. The lander lost communication with ground stations during its final descent. Chandrayaan 2 mission was a highly complex project, which represented a significant technological leap compared to the previous missions of ISRO, that brought together an orbiter, lander and rover to explore the unexplored south pole of the Moon. This was a unique mission which aimed at studying not just one area of the Moon but all the areas combining the exosphere, the surface as well as the subsurface of the Moon in a single mission. A successful landing would have made India just the fourth country, after USA, USSR and China, to land a vessel on the lunar surface, and only the third to operate a robotic rover there.
