other Nature can sure whip up a storm every now and then, and sometimes not in a good way. She can move the plates of the earth around at inappropriate times; she can apportion rain to areas that don’t need it…and starve places of it that desperately do.

Surreal Places you won’t believe exist on earth: Gates of Hell, Derweze, Turkmenistan: The Darvaza gas crater, also known as the Door to Hell or Gates of Hell, is a natural gas field collapsed into a cavern located in Derweze, Turkmenistan. Geologists intentionally set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas and it is thought to have been burning continuously since 1971. The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m2. Its diameter is 69m and its depth is 30m.

The Turkmen government hopes that the crater will become a popular tourist attraction. The surrounding area is also popular for wild desert camping. According to Turkmen geologist, Anatoly Bushmakin, the site was identified by Soviet engineers in 1971. It was originally thought to be a substantial oil field site. The engineers set up a drilling rig and operations to assess the quantity of oil available at the site. Soon after the preliminary survey found a natural gas pocket, the ground beneath the drilling rig and camp collapsed into a wide crater

have been to Abu Dhabi several times and have thoroughly enjoyed every sojourn in the Emirate, but there is one place (for various reasons) I have never managed to visit, until now‌the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This, coupled with two new places that have opened since my last visit, were to be the highlights of my recent visit.

Six Senses Resorts Goes Wild in the Galápagos Islands
T
he Galápagos Islands are home to some of the world’s most amazing wildlife encounters. The isolated chain of 19 islands emerged alone from the rest of the world and its ecology developed in its own unique way. Guests at the upcoming Six Senses Galapagos will therefore experience a one-of-a-kind (literally anywhere on earth) natural environment.
While final accommodations are being finalised, the master architectural direction by Hitesh Mehta Design focuses on a necessarily idiosyncratic planning philosophy, which balances economic, environmental, social and spiritual aspects of the project.
Every shade of green…Six Senses Galapagos will be located in Cerro Verde on the northeastern coast of San Cristobal Island. This is the quietest of the main islands, blessed with a relaxed, tranquil vibe. UNESCO recognised the Galápagos Islands as a World Heritage Site in 1978 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1985 and development is only permitted on 3% of the total area.
“Sustainability is at the core of our brand, influencing everything from ongoing community engagement and conservation efforts to the local, repurposed materials used in the development. We are excited and delighted to work with Orgal Group on this extraordinary project in such a special and environmentally sensitive place, staying true to our joint purpose of ecosystem restoration, scientific research of marine species and low-impact tourism,” said Chief Executive Officer, Neil Jacobs, of Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas.
In accordance with strict local laws, and with strong involvement from the local community during the project’s early design and visioning stages, allowance has been granted to develop the resort on a beautiful and verdant hill with unspoiled views of the ocean and other topographical landmarks.
In particular, the focus is on restoring the original endemic Miconia ecosystem, eradicating invasive species and maintaining a native plant nursery on site. Plans are already underway for an Earth Lab and Experience Center. The first will showcase the project’s sustainability
efforts and the second will host research and educational activities by well-respected academics and NGOs already engaged in the Galápagos. The almost zero light pollution ensures night skies are some of the most spectacular on earth and an Observation Post will serve up a heady cocktail of stargazing and fine dining. All three facilities have been designed by world-renowned bamboo architect Simon Velez. Six Senses Galapagos will be located a 35-minute drive from the San Cristobal airport at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The resort is slated to open in 2021.

Camels Lead Diners on Culinary Journey

hey’re not letting the camel get his nose into your tent, or onto your plate at The Chedi Muscat, but they have enlisted a local dromedary as guide on a culinary journey through one of the most exquisite resorts on the Arabian Peninsula.on earth) natural environment.

destination with flavours your palette never knew existed. In fact once you’ve indulged in the contrasting cuisine on offer throughout Macao, your tastebuds will never be the same again. It is not often I travel to a destination in search of cuisine. For me it has always been about the adventure. Food has always been more the side project, even though I wine and dine more than I cook.

What I found in Macao was a sensory overload, with every meal taking you on a succulent, scrumptious sensory journey. Somehow everything from chicken feet to delicious pastries managed to find my mouth, and I often found myself smiling before I even knew what I was indulging in. After all, you never know if you don’t try. Macao did not disappoint. In fact, it is recognised for having the world’s earliest forms of fusion food on the
UNESCO Creative Cities Gastronomy list. It was a trip of many pleasing culinary firsts, seconds and, I dare to say, thirds – helpings that is. Using modern gastronomic techniques to elevate traditional recipes handed down from generation to generation, the results are both ingenious and modern, but with no compromise on tradition. fter our last day in Oregon we turned the Cruise America RV onto Route 199 for 45 miles (72.4 kilometres) before re-entering California. Just beyond the border we crossed into Redwood National Park – here coastal redwoods grow up to 380 feet (115.8 m) tall, weigh up to 500 tons and reach 2,000 years old – the world’s tallest living tree and a living link to the age of dinosaurs. Congress designated it a National Park in 1968.
Forty miles (64.3 kilometres) later we drove through Crescent City, where on March 28, 1964 a tsunami caused by a deadly magnitude 9.2 earthquake off Alaska, sent monstrous seas and deadly tidal waves all the way south into this Northern California coastal city, destroying the downtown business district and killing 11 people – it remains the largest and most destructive recorded tsunami to ever strike the United States Pacific Coast, according to the University

ew Zealand’s first renewable energy-focused hot tub and electric bike cruise destination has been established in Wanaka. LandEscape Wanaka is set amongst some of the country’s most spectacular scenery on a working farm on Camp Hill Road between Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. The attraction includes 15km of gentle and scenic purpose-built cycle trails, eight natural-style outdoor hot tubs and six stargazing glasshouses. The first stage of LandEscape was completed at the end of last month and comprises four hot tubs each boasting spectacular mountain and valley vistas. Another four tubs will be added over subsequent months. Guests are currently able to book one of two hot tubs already commissioned and in operation, located close to the LandEscape Ride Centre. Further development, including more hot tubs, accommodation, a restaurant and bar is planned for the future. Smooth As Silk - Thai Airways

hai Airways has always been one of my favourite airlines, ever since a family trip to the kingdom around 10-12 years ago, and as I boarded flight TG 492 at Auckland International Airport recently, my thoughts went back to then. I distinctly remembered how clean the plane was, how beautifully dressed the cabin crew were and, most importantly, how stunning the food was. From memory, the aircraft was an all time favourite of mine - the Boeing 747-400. The aircraft flying the Auckland Bangkok route currently is also one of my favourite aircraft … the fantastic Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. With 30 Business (Royal Silk Class) and 268 Economy Class seats, the aircraft caters to all means of traveller. The seat configuration is 1-2-1 in Business and 3-3-3 in Economy. My flight was practically full, and as I headed into the aircraft, I turned left to my lie-flat seat of 14A. I was going to need this for the 12 hours of flying
- followed by only four days on the ground before heading home. I do like the soothing ‘purple’ colour that Thai Airways utilise in the crew dress, seating and general overall branding. The lie-flat beds come with a personal seat-mattress and duvet to ensure a few hours sleep on the upward leg (which departs Auckland around 2pm daily). Royal Silk class cabins are in every way elegant and comfortable, and include a bespoke amenity kit with designer toiletries and accessories. As I said earlier, the food was a lasting memory from my last flight on Thai Airways, so it was with gusto that I dived into the menu to see what tickled my taste buds as I sipped my first drink. The ethos of Thai Airways when it comes to food is Samrab Thai … Thailand’s national culinary heritage, which exhibits the richness of the Thai culinary arts. Thai cuisine is

ir New Zealand’s inaugural flight from Auckland to Newark Liberty International Airport will take off on the 29th October 2020, becoming the first ever non-stop service between New Zealand and New York. The new service deepens the alliance between Air New Zealand and United Airlines and follows Air New Zealand’s successful launch of non-stop flights to United’s hub in Chicago in November 2018.
Air New Zealand will fly the route three times weekly, year-round, under its flagship flight numbers NZ1 southbound and NZ2 northbound. The service will be operated by Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in its latest, premium-focused configuration. From its East Coast gateway at Newark Liberty International Airport, United Airlines operates more than 400 daily flights across the United States. The new service between

s I check-in, I’m handed a black cap with a bright green embroidered ‘Air Chathams’ logo splashed across the front. All 38 passengers boarding this flight are given a hat with strict instructions to wear it on board … after all, it’s a special occasion. It’s the inaugural scheduled Air Chathams flight from Auckland to Norfolk Island. The airline offers chartered flights to Norfolk, but this is the first regular service. It’s also the first direct route from Aotearoa since Air New Zealand pulled out in 2017. The new service allows Kiwis to reach Norfolk in a little over two hours. Air Chathams’ Convair 580 is configured for up to 50 passengers, but for the inaugural flight we’re on a 39-seater, which had returned from a cargo run in Christchurch that morning with the extra seats removed. The 50-seater is the permanent fixture for the route. Checked-in luggage allowance is 23kg and 7kg for carry-on. There are no overhead cabins so carry-on bags are stashed under the seat in front. A350-900 Touches Down In Wellington

ingapore Airlines recently made history as the first airline to operate commercial flights to Wellington with an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The twin-engine, wide-body, A350-900 aircraft is operating as SQ247 from Singapore (via Melbourne). The airline's Regional Vice President, Mr. Philip Goh, said deploying the A350-900 aircraft on the route provides a new level of comfort for customers travelling to and from the New Zealand capital. “We are excited to bring the A350-900 to Wellington, presenting customers with improved comfort and an enhanced range of cabin options, including lie-flat Business Class and Premium Economy,” Mr. Goh said. “As well as being the first airline to operate scheduled commercial services to Wellington using the A350-900, we are the first to offer
customers the option of flying Premium Economy long haul to Singapore and beyond.” “Wellington is a great hub for culture, technology, dining and the arts. Serving the Wellington market with the A350-900 aircraft reinforces our commitment to the city, which we have proudly operated to since 2016.” Having launched services to the New Zealand capital in 2016, Singapore Airlines has continued to invest in the route, making changes to better suit the demands of travellers. The arrival of one of the most technologically advanced aircraft in the sky is further reinforcement of the airline’s commitment to the city. New crew uniforms featuring the bright colours cherished by famed painter Gauguin have been added to the Purotu and Marmarau dresses that are favoured by Polynesian women. Bright and exotic hues of red, yellow, blue and even rose motifs that were hallmarks of the painter have
been worked into the design, making it a real representation of French Polynesia. The airline’s fleet and inflight enhancements are accompanied by a revamp of its Tahitian headquarters as it quite literally flies into a more modern age that has a strong environmental mandate as well as celebrating its French Polynesian roots. Daniel remarks that Air Tahiti Nui’s future is looking bright with its new offering that will also reduce travel time on the Auckland – Papeete route by up to half-an-hour and offer customers what he describes as the ‘Perfect entrée to their French Polynesian sejour’ (stay/visit). enerally, I am not a fan of airport hotels. Convenient they certainly are when flight connections don’t work but a lot I have stayed in are very average. Well, not Rydges Sydney Airport.247 from Singapore (via Melbourne). After undergoing a major renovation this property is worth the stay, even if you don’t need to jump on a flight. In my case I had an early flight and had an overnight in Sydney before flying home…and I’m glad I did. From the first cheerful greeting of the front desk staff, to the sensational meal I had whilst dining at their restaurant, The Ascot, to the relaxing nightcap at their elegant rooftop bar, Cloud 9, I could have easily stayed another night or two. Their website proudly states they are located ‘at the international terminal and just 181 steps to the check-in counters.’ I didn’t count the steps myself but after my long haul Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi I was extremely grateful of the proximity.
