WINTER WEDDINGS by Sara Chatwin Reg. Psychologist for MindWorks Life Performance Specialists Having a wedding in the winter months care the strike the fear of God into the hearts of even the most confident couples. There are stresses attached to any wedding: organising the venue, the dresses and suits, the flowers, the food, the seating plan, the music and a number of other large and small details that comprise the great day. Yet one factor that seems to compound all other stresses, and one that no couple has any control over, is the weather! One might ask, particularly in New Zealand where the weather can be a little fickle to say the least, WHY people would choose to have a wedding in winter when there’s a far greater chance of inclement temperatures and rain. The answer is that some people prefer the cooler climate, the timing may suit their honeymoon plans and, perhaps, for those who have relatives off-shore, it’s just an easier time of year! Whatever the reason, many brides and grooms-to-be, DO opt for chillier nuptials … and they can be absolutely beautiful, so long as certain factors are thought through and some plan B’s and C’s are put in place to accommodate temperature changes! For most couples, there’s a desire to be really comfortable on the ‘big day’. Whilst nerves are to be expected, psychologically most people like to have the ‘T’s crossed and the I’s dotted’ so that many extraneous pitfalls and risks are mitigated. It pays to have a Plan B sorted with regard to venue, photo locations and ways of getting from church to reception and beyond without getting wet, cold or bedraggled. The more organised and prepared couples are for whatever the day brings, the less likely they will be disappointed with the occasion. One of the biggest disappointments of the winter brides I have spoken with has to be the photo locations that become literal washouts in bad weather. Have some indoor locations at the ready, just in case. The second pitfall to avoid is a wet wedding dress. Have plenty of umbrellas or raincoats/ cloaks to cover all the necessary dresses and suits. There’s nothing worse than feeling damp and clammy for the remainder of your big day, thanks to a winter shower! The third and final tip for winter wedding success is … relax! Follow tips one and two: get organised with alternate photo locales and extra cover-ups, and you can be assured of an easy transition from singledom to the glorious state of coupledom. www.mindworks.co.nz
