A MARQUEE WEDDING

by Erika Unbehaun Marquees make a stunning statement and can turn the drabbest venue into a sumptuous and lavish affair. Whether your venue is a family member’s overgrown paddock, mum’s lovingly tended garden or a commercial venue with limited indoor space, there are a few things you should consider. Cooking and prepping If there aren’t kitchens or a suitable work area available for your caterers, do make sure you allocate a separate marquee for their use. You don’t want the chefs and serving staff to cook and assemble food in front of your guests.

Cover all bases Make sure your caterer includes the following in their quote: • All cooking equipment and a refrigeration trailer (including wine cooler or ice) • Cutlery, crockery, and glassware • Staff and staff transportation • Tables and banqueting chairs would be ideal but not all caterers include this. Plus, you might want to source these yourself for aesthetic reasons. Well watered Ensure that caterers have access to fresh water. You can run an extendable hose into the venue or house, if necessary. In really remote locations, you may need to bring water in. Totally trashed Tell the caterers that all wastage, including water, must be taken off site and disposed off. Don’t get left holding the clean up can the following morning when you’re preparing to take off on your honeymoon! Service with a smile You should have one waiter and one wine server for every ten guests. This is not an area to try and save money. Good service is very important and something your guests will remember. Unfortunately, they’ll remember even better if they could never get a drink or canapé! Safekeeping Designate a room inside a nearby house or venue to lock up all valuables and wedding gifts. Thieves are always on the lookout for big events so make sure you have expensive items locked away. Speaking of which, it’s worth hiring a security guard to watch the marquee overnight. Mopping up Many venues will have cleaning supplies on hand, but if you’re in a marquee in a field, you’re on your own! Have a few cleaning supplies at your fingertips as spillage is inevitable at weddings. Give the supplies to your planner or bridesmaid. Traffic jams Ensure there’s sufficient parking in a nearby parking lot or a field. If it’s in a field, make sure you provide a walkway so guests don’t ruin their shoes and/or clothing. Hang ups Have your caterer or planner arrange a cloakroom or separate area for your guests’ coats and hats. Alternatively, hand out pegs to the ladies for them to peg their hats to the inside lining of the marquee - it’s stylish and adds to the design! Is there somewhere for wet umbrellas to be stored just inside the entrance? Centre of attention A combination of high and low centrepieces works best in marquees. Rainbow effects Think carefully about the colours you choose inside your tent. Consider the chair pads, flooring, tent lining, lighting, and linen – then think about the bridal party’s attire, flowers and any other décor you’re including. When in doubt, go with neutrals for the marquee and lining. Always see samples of equipment before you hire them as you don’t want any colour clashing. Two steps to heaven Try raising your dance floor and having steps leading up to it. This is an unusual look and will create a real wow factor. Private affairs If you’re using portable toilets, try to place them in a separate marquee attached to the main marquee. This feels more private, gives off a VIP vibe, and keeps guests dry in the event of bad weather.
