MAKING A DIFFERENCE When Sasha Wellings joined the Guardian Family Network four months ago as Director, she had in the back of my mind, that she would be part of a ‘communication hub’. She never imagined that it would be so much more than that, the Guardian Family Network plays a pivotal role in the lives of our students and she has found that we really do make a difference! We are committed to offering an outstanding service to our clients and the stakeholders within our businesses. We understand just how important our Guardian families are to ensuring that our students are thriving in their schools and happily settled with a family in Britain. Being a Guardian is an excellent opportunity for your own children to make new friends, to learn about other countries and gain cultural understanding. It is not full time role as the children are at Independent boarding schools. A home from home experience is really at the heart of what we do during half term and exeat breaks. We are there to support our Guardians just as much as we are there for our children and their parents. Building lasting relationships with people across the globe, forming friendships with families from different cultures are some of the wonderful benefits of becoming a Guardian. It is an opportunity to become involved in the school life of a young person – making a difference. The role is suitable for families, single parents, couples without children, retired couples with empty nests. To find out more about this interesting and rewarding role, visit The Guardian Family Network website www.guardianfamily.co.uk or give us a call for an informal chat on 01865 522066

Thousands of families and children in homes and schools across the land take part every year – wearing hats of all shapes, sizes and colours, getting involved in an amazing array of fun and inventive events, making and collecting donations from everyone around, all helping to raise awareness and funds for vital research. Set back from the road in a surprisingly rural setting, just minutes from the A38 in Littleover, is Derby Grammar School – an excellent independent school for boys aged 7 – 18 years and girls aged 16 – 18 years. The School comprises a Junior School, Senior School and co-educational Sixth Form; each with its own designated space and facilities but sharing the same ethos and friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The Junior School, which has been described by parents as ‘the jewel in Derby Grammar School’s crown’, is a vibrant place where boys can be boys and are taught as such. Education is brought to life on a daily basis by outstanding teachers who know how to engage boys’ interest and capture their imaginations. Small class sizes means pupils can be treated, and taught, as individuals – becoming aware of their own talents and strengths, growing in confidence and fulfilling their potential. There’s never a dull moment in the Junior School, as pupils learn through a variety of experiences, from the usual to the unusual! Recently they have had visits from King Henry VIII and a Maasai Warrior, taken part in a global chemistry experiment, made shelters in DT and learnt all about fair trade with the Co-op. They’ve also ventured out

on many occasions, enjoying visits including Year 4’s trip to Shugborough Hall, Year 6’s residential trip to Hollowford and a whole School overnight adventure to London. A range of extra-curricular and after school activities are on offer, including Art and Craft club, Discovery Club, Fun Maths Club, and the opportunity to learn various instruments. Pupils also participate in a range of competitive and non-competitive sports each week. Although the focus is firmly on education, with pupils making excellent progress in all areas, Derby Grammar Junior School manages to do this with a great sense of fun! Initiatives like ‘Charity Week’ and ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ combine fun and fundraising; and each day pupils come to School with smiles on their faces ready for the day ahead. If you’d like to visit Derby Grammar School and experience the vibrant, welcoming atmosphere for yourself then come along to our Food Fayre and Open Day on Saturday 15th March, 10am – 3pm. Tours and taster days can also be arranged at any other time by prior appointment – call Louise Slater Blackwall on 01332 510030 or email admissions@derbygrammar.co.uk.
