MYTH-OUT Summer Reading Challenge 2014
19th July to 7th September Sign-up for a fabulous fantasy adventure based on myths and legends from around the world. The Summer Reading Challenge, coordinated by independent charity, The Reading Agency, takes place every year and is the biggest national reading initiative running in 97% of UK public libraries. The Reading Agency strongly encourages reading for pleasure, and states that it is very important to children’s successes because “everything changes when we read.” The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to encourage a love of reading and gets three quarters of a million children into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence during the long holidays. What’s more, it doesn’t cost a penny to join or to attend any of the Summer Reading Challenge events and activities in your local area. The challenge is simple- to read 6 or more books over the summer holidays. The books can be anything from storybooks and joke books, to picture books and audio books, just as long as they’re borrowed from a library. After the success of last year’s ‘Creepy House Challenge’, for 2014, children aged 4-11 are invited to find their way through a labyrinth of myths and legends. The fun begins when children sign-up and receive their fantastic ‘Mythical Maze’ foldout poster to get them started. Award-winning illustrator, Sarah McIntyre, designed this year’s Mythical Maze poster and activity packs. She is one of the most prolific and exciting author/illustrators working today and has published a number of best-selling books, including Morris The Mankiest Monster and Oliver And The Seawigs.
Sarah tells us about her work and involvement with The Summer Reading Challenge 2014:
Which other jobs do you think you’d be good at if you did not write and illustrate books?
Tell us why you became a children’s book illustrator?
Once I had a career crisis and decided I didn’t want to illustrate anymore, and applied for a job as a rigger on the Cutty Sark masted ship. It would have been fascinating, I would have learned all about maintaining a ship, got to climb to all sorts of exciting heights, and travelled out to refit ships in Portsmouth, Malta and further afield. I interviewed, and didn’t get the job. But they liked the drawing on my thank-you card so much that they hired me as the Ship’s Illustrator instead. I think my interest in ships was partly inspired by talking one night at the gallery with a guy who had worked as an astronomer on a BBC recreation of Cook’s Endeavour voyage. He mentioned they’d had a ship’s botanist; whenever they docked, she’d go and find interesting local plants, bring them back on board, and draw them. How cool would that be?! So yes, a ship’s botanist, that’d be perfect. Not a docked ship, a ship that explores places.
I’ve always loved books and drawing, and I think picture books shaped much of how I understand the world around me, even now. I used to think I wanted to be a fine artist - perhaps a painter - but I couldn’t figure out how I’d make a living at it. Some friends and I ran an art gallery in Camberwell, south London for six years, and it started to dawn on me that a lot of today’s fine art involves convincing people you’re terribly clever while creating a minimal amount of visual work. That’s just not my thing; I guess I’m a maximalist. I like colour and story and craft, and making people feel included instead of excluded; those things are starting to catch on now, but ten years ago they were pretty unfashionable. I love how children don’t care about what’s cool; they want a good story, and interesting stuff to look at. And when I started making picture books and getting to know other people who made picture books, it dawned on me that I was working with some of the kindest, gentlest, most creatively playful people in the world. These are my people!
Which three words best describe your illustration style? Accessible, lively, playful…? I don’t know, you tell me! I like to keep moving with the way I draw things, and trying new things. When you were a child, what was your favourite book? It varied from week to week! But I loved Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen, Errol Le Cain books, Bill Watterson’s Calvin & Hobbes (check those out if you haven’t read them!) and Lynn Johnston’s For Better or For Worse comic strips, Watership Down by Richard Adams, The Runaway Robot by Lester Del Ray, and The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pène du Bois. I wasn’t so keen on stories set at school and familiar places, I wanted to get away and go on adventures.

How did you become involved with the Summer Reading Challenge? Writer Damian Kelleher works with The Reading Agency and he approached me and asked! I was thrilled to say yes. Chris Riddell illustrated last year for the Creepy House theme, so I was proud to follow in his footsteps with Mythical Maze. Why should children take part in this year’s ‘Mythical Maze’ challenge? It’s a great excuse when parents are trying to get you to do chores around the house. You can say, ‘but I need to go to the library and select my books for the Summer Reading Challenge’! This will impress them and get you out of doing the washing up at least once. Also, stickers and a cool poster! I’d love to see people design other mazes with their own mythical creatures living in them. It was fun building little places for them all to live. I think my favourites to draw were Medusa and Anansi. She has great hair and he has cool specs, hat and boots. Reading is just plain fun. And comic books count! Try The Terrible Tales of the Teenytinysaurs by my studio mate Gary Northfield, Super Animal Adventure Squad by James Turner, Shark & Lobster’s Amazing Undersea Adventure by Viviane Schwarz or Bunny vs. Monkey by Jamie Smart. Once you get hooked on reading, you realise you can travel in books to loads of exciting places without having to have any money or plane tickets or permission to stay out overnight. Revival Retro Events are proud to announce the return of their flagship gaming event on 8th and 9th August at Dunstall Race Course, Wolverhampton. Visitors will be taken back to the 1970s, 80s and 90s, reliving the atmosphere of the seaside arcades and the explosion of home computing and console gaming. There will be hundreds of arcade machines, home computers and consoles for the public to come and experience; exhibitions by the Retro Computer Museum and the Centre for Computing History plus traders selling associated products and merchandise.
Following on from their biggest ever spring event, Insomnia52 will be the second Insomnia event to take place in Coventry’s Ricoh Arena 22nd-25th August 2014. With an expected footfall of over 30,000, this summer event is not to be missed!

The Big Primary Times Interview Primary Times met Edward Timpson MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, at the House of Commons to hear all about the Primary PE and Sport Premium.

Indeed, one of the main objectives is to increase physical activity not just in primary stages but throughout a person’s life and the transition to secondary school sport is an important part of this. There are almost as many ways of spending the money as there are schools to spend it whether by improving the skills and knowledge of staff, bringing in specialist sports experts to extend after-school activities, buying new equipment or engaging the least active pupils. Some schools are joining forces to create their own local networks: pooling resources and using their collective buying power to generate preferential rates with suppliers and share facilities, staff or equipment. We talked about a recent school visit the minister had made where one group of four schools are joining together to employ a sports professional to spend one day a week in each school with the fifth day allocated to helping children with particular difficulties.

Giving children the chance to find out more about breakfast
A
sk most children to name a popular breakfast cereal and there’s every chance that Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Frosties and Rice Krispies will roll off their tongues. But ask the same children where their cereal comes from and one in 10 will tell you “from a supermarket” of course. And just as worrying, one in six will have no idea that their favourite bowl of cereal in the morning starts off as a seed in a field and is from the grain family. Despite the figures that clearly show a gap in children’s knowledge about how food reaches their plates, they are a curious bunch who are keen to find out more. Given an opportunity, they want to get involved and four out of 10 even take a huge interest in cooking from scratch and enjoy reading or leafing through celebrity cook books and watching cookery shows like Junior MasterChef and The Great British Bake Off. That’s why Manchester-based cereal maker Kellogg’s is keen to show youngsters the incredible journey their cereal makes from
seed to spoon. And it all begins with sunshine and natural grains like wheat, oats, barley and corn. All the crops are lovingly nurtured by farmers and, once harvested, only the best are sent to Kellogg’s to be baked and turned into the delicious flakes or crispy rice that are packed into boxes and sent out to supermarkets and grocery stores for millions to enjoy in the morning.
DID YOU KNOW?
*One in 10 believes breakfast cereal is made at the supermarket *The research was conducted in the United Kingdom by Platypus. The total sample size as 2,000 parents and children, as well as Ireland and Germany where we polled 1,000 parents and children in each country. The research was carried out online between May 2 and May 16, 2014.
While it’s easy enough to pop a box of breakfast cereal into a shopping basket, Kellogg’s wants to bring the story behind the carton to life so children have a good grasp of how their everyday staple reaches the table. And just as important as the growing, harvesting and production is the company’s Origins programme, which is key to Kellogg’s and its farmers who work together to make sure the countryside and wild creatures are preserved. Origins not only supports farmers by helping to fine-tune farming methods to help them to be more efficient and productive, it helps protect the environment too. The programme gives farmers a helping hand with nature to keep Britain’s beautiful wild flowers, hedgerows and even hundreds of creepy crawlies safe for future generations. Farmers are encouraged to allow pretty wild
flowers to grow on their land and that in turn means 100 different types of insects can help with vital pollination. Nurturing lush hedgerows – which have been under threat – creates a home for 10 different species from birds and rabbits to mice and voles. And beetle banks can accommodate around 1,500 insects per square metre. No wonder then that Kellogg’s is immensely proud of its programme with the farmers – it not only looks after how grain for the nation’s breakfast tables is grown, but also goes hand-inhand with nature. Kellogg’s said: “Together we are bringing back insects, wild plants and other natural species to our countryside. “We believe in creating great starts for our cereal by investing in the special people and the natural places where our grains grow.”

Blow the Whistle on Sunburn! Julia Bradbury supports the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, a new initiative helping keep kids safe in the sun The long school summer holidays can be a daunting prospect and to break up the time, many of you rely on outdoor holiday clubs, providing kids with the chance to learn new skills, socialise and get them out of the house! However with children spending most of the day outdoors, ensuring they’re adequately sun protected all day can be tricky and at times, hit and miss. As a result the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund devised The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, designed to be implemented by all those who work outdoors with children, ensuring that kids turn up to sessions with the correct kit and are actively protected throughout the day. This FREE online resource bank was developed by a leading skin cancer specialist alongside experts in physical education and child welfare, and is supported by over 30 national governing bodies of sport and outdoor activities. Individuals or groups simply log on to the website www. oksunsafetycode.com and follow simple guidelines based on three core elements; educating, protecting and leading by example. Once they can prove they have completed the required criteria, they can then use their OK Accreditation Mark. When children attend sessions run by OK Accredited groups or individuals, they will: • Be required to arrive with the correct clothing and sunscreen • Be taught how, when and why it is important to apply the correct SPF
18
SUMMER 2014®ISSUE
• Have access to shade at break times and water throughout the day • Have leaders and coaches who lead by example; building good habits for the future The campaign was developed to tackle the rising problem of melanoma; the most deadly form of skin cancer. Rates in the UK are now more than five times higher than they were in the 1970s with more than 13,000 people developing the disease each year, compared with around 1,800 in the mid1970s. The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that with 80% of life time sun exposure occurring during childhood and that just one blistering attack can double the risk of getting a melanoma later in life, it makes sense to take kids sun protection seriously. Julia Bradbury is the ambassador of the initiative and says: “I am a lover of the outdoors, but also aware of the harmful effects of the sun: so I am delighted to support this initiative. We owe it to all children to make sure they are sun protected.” Why not ask your local club, group or coach to get involved, and help them blow the whistle on sunburn! Nathalia Buttface and the Most Embarrassing Dad in the World by Nigel Smith
Harper Collins, £6.99 | 9+ The Most Embarrassing Dad in the World was embarrassing Nathalia even before she was born. He went and married Mum, didn’t he? Mum’s last name was De Montfort. Thanks to Dad she wasn’t Nathalia De Montfort. She was Nathalia Bumole. “It’s pronounced Bew-mow–lay,” Dad would tell her patiently, time and again. “If anyone says differently, the joke’s on them.” But as Nathalia knows only too well, the joke will not be on them. It will be on her. Massively. If Nathalia can just keep The Most Embarrassing Dad In The World away from her new school, then maybe he won’t ruin everything this time. Maybe.
Diamond (Hetty Feather Series) by Jacqueline Wilson Yearling, £6.99 | 9-11

Discovering an extraordinary gift for acrobatics, Diamond uses her talent to earn a few pennies, but brings shame on her family. When a mysterious, cruel-eyed stranger spots her performing, Diamond is sold - and is taken to become an acrobat at Tanglefield’s Travelling Circus. When life at the circus becomes too dangerous to bear any longer, what will the future hold for Diamond?
REVIEW
A Dog So Small by Philippa Pearce Puffin Books, £6.99 | 11+
Ben Blewitt is desperate for a dog and the story opens with him waking early on the morning of his birthday, anticipating that he will have one of his own. He’s picked out the biggest and best dogs from the books in the library - and he just knows he’s going to get one for his birthday. Ben is very excited, but he receives a picture of a Chihuahua called Chiquitito (the Spanish word for very, very small) instead of a real dog! Ben is bitterly disappointed and swears never to visit his grandparents again, though he does go to stay with them at their house in the countryside shortly afterwards. He soon learns that the imagination can be a powerful thing. On his return journey to London, he suddenly sees Chiquitito for the first time behind his closed eyelids and from then on he and the dog are inseparable. See what adventures they embark upon together. This is a beautiful story about the dangers and pleasures of a child’s active imagination.

Making plans for the Autumn term Written by Anne Marie Scanlon
For most children, returning to school after the long summer break is a time of mixed emotions – excitement about starting the next year, having new teachers, learning new things and making new friends. However excitement can often go hand-in-hand with anxiety. Don’t worry, there’s quite a lot parents can do to make the return to school as easy as possible for their children. Organise as much as you can now. The last thing either you or your child want is a stressed-out last minute scrabble to get everything done. Many parents feel that they must provide an all new uniform for their child, and these can generally be obtained for a reasonable amount at well-known supermarkets and chain stores. Still, no matter how low the prices are, many of us just aren’t in a position to purchase brand new clothes. Many PTAs now run sales, usually at this time of year, and you can snap up great bargains – especially with items bearing the school crest. Apart from the PTA, many areas have local online parenting sites or forums – where school uniforms can be bought or got for free. Also, check www.ilovefreegle.org to find the Freegle group in your area. (Freegle allows people to obtain or give away items they no longer need – for free.) Remember, what we once called second-hand, is now called pre-loved. There is one thing that you can’t purchase in advance – footwear. Having properly fitted shoes is essential for the health and development of your child. Don’t
skimp on gym shoes either. Parents often chose plimsolls for gym, as they are easy for small children to put on and are relatively cheap. Unfortunately, plimsolls do not give a child’s foot adequate support. There is no need to spend extravagantly on gym shoes, go to a specialist shop and buy according to budget. See our guide for getting your child perfectly shoed (below). Easing the way back to school isn’t just about having the whole kit and caboodle ready to go. While it’s tempting to completely abandon everything education-related for the duration of the holidays it’s not such a good idea. With each advancing year at primary school the workload increases significantly and sometimes the first day back can be a bit of a shock, especially if your child has avoided anything education-related for the entire break. Nobody’s suggesting that you make your offspring sit at a desk every day and do hard sums but a few fun brain activities will mean that your child is better prepared for the year ahead.
cooking with them and get them to read the recipes (they could even write the shopping list!), get them to read maps, road names, street signs and advertising billboards. We are surrounded by words and you can have your children reading without them even knowing they’re doing it!
Check our website www.primarytimes.net Kid’s Activities section where you can download fun activity and educational worksheets. It is also essential for your child to regularly practice reading during the holidays. A lot of people assume this means putting a book in a child’s hand – not necessarily. Once your child has mastered reading point them towards sections in the newspaper that will interest them (fashion, pop music, sport), do some
(1) Measure, Measure, Measure When you are ready to buy get your child’s feet professionally measured. Then go somewhere else and have it done again. Despite the amazing gadgetry shops now have for measuring children’s feet the people using the gadgetry are human and sometimes make mistakes. Yes, this is slightly time consuming but having the proper fit is so important. Given that most shops provide a fitting service at least you won’t be out of pocket.
Many of us relax rules about bedtime during the holidays but it’s a good idea to return to normal about a week before school starts so your child is back into a routine. Until then – enjoy the summer.
Three Top Tips for Buying Shoes for School
(2) Never Buy Shoes in a Hurry This applies as much to buying your own shoes as it does to purchasing your children’s. Sometimes, even if the size is right, the style of the shoe just doesn’t feel comfortable for the wearer. You need time to walk around in shoes to know if they’re going to fit properly or irritate some part of your feet. Your children probably need even more time to make that decision. (3) BYOS (Bring Your Own Socks) Again this is something that you could apply to yourself. When you are buying your child’s school shoes bring along the socks/tights they will be wearing with them. This is even more important when buying gym shoes as the socks worn for P.E. are often thicker than ordinary ones. Don’t Forget… To book after school clubs, activities and tutors now for the new academic year – that way you won’t run the risk of missing the first lesson!
Choosing the right ruck sack. Unsurprisingly, given the size and contents of their bags, back pain is becoming increasingly common among the young. Tim Hutchful from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) advises, “You can help to protect your child from back and neck pain by making sure they have the right school gear and don’t carry too much with them each day.” The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) recommends rucksacks, carried on both shoulders and checked daily for excess weight, as the best school bags. BCA also advise wearing supportive soft-soled shoes and for children to keep as active as possible throughout the day. For more information check www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk. 34
