THE KING FOUND IN A CAR PARK!
Where would you expect a King of England to be buried? In Westminster Abbey maybe? In any one of the many Cathedrals that are dotted around England? The grounds of a castle or Stately Home would be a suitable final resting place for a King. But a car-park in Leicester…you’ve got to be joking!
BACK TO SCHOOL 2013 ISSUE
The pit where Richard was found
So, who was King Richard III and what will happen to his bones now?
How they believe Richard would’ve looked in real life.
Richard’s death King Richard’s short reign was at the end of what we now call the ‘War of the Roses’. Richard was a member of the House of York, who, for over thirty years, had been involved with a constant battle for the throne with the Hou se of Lancaster. When Richard seized the throne, the Lancastrians decided the time was right for the m to try to claim the throne too. The Welshman Henry Tudor was the Lancastrian heir to the throne, and the armies of York and Lancaster met on the bat tlefield of Market Bosworth in Leicestershire. Richard was killed in the battle and Henry Tudor became Kin g Henry VII, the head of the Tudor dynasty. Richard’s body was thrown over a horse and taken to GreyFriars Church in Leic ester for burial. There was to be no grand memorial for the dead king. Henry was King now, and he did n’t really want Richard to be remembered at all, but if people did think of him, Henry VII wanted it to be as an evil tyrant, or a hunchback, but not as a king. So Richard was bur ied under the cold and dirty chu rch flagstones. When the church was destroyed in 1538 in the reign of the famous Henry VIII, Richar d’s grave went with it, to lie undiscovered until almost 500 years later.
The Princes in the Tower
Bad King Richard?
King Richard may only have been king for two years, but he is still one of the most famous English Kings of all. He stole the throne from his own nephew, the young Edward V, who was just 13 years old when he became King. Richard put the young King in the Tower of London with his younger brother Richard, and the young boys mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again. The boys were called ‘The Princes in the Tower’, and it has long been believed that wicked King Richard had them killed. Richard suffered from a medical condition called Scoliosis, which meant that his spine was curved. Because of this, writers like Shakespeare said that King Richard had a hunchback, and portrayed him
So what now for Richard? Richard III will now finally get the burial fitting for a King of England. In fact, Richard was the last English king of England, the Tudors that followed were Welsh, next came the Stuarts who were Scots, and finally the Hanoverians who came from Germany. Maybe this is the reason so many places want to claim Richard as their own. There were plans to bury the King in Leicester Cathedral. This seemed sensible. After all, he had died in Leicester and had been buried there for almost 500 years, so Leicester Cathedral had a good case for claiming the king. But Richard was from the House of York, and so many believe that York would be a much more fitting resting place for the King. A group of Richard’s present day descendants say that Richard himself
as an ugly, scary looking man with evil eyes and a pointed nose. Paintings that made Richard look normal were altered to make his one shoulder much higher than the other to give him the famous hunchback look. The truth was that in person, people probably wouldn’t have noticed the slight curve, but the hunchback helped create a picture of Richard as an evil king. Richard had quite a sad life before his early death when he was only 33. His beloved wife Anne Neville died young, as did his only child, a son. He was betrayed many times by people who he believed to be his friends, and never really had a safe or happy time when he was King. Despite this, he was popular in the North of England, where people thought he was a wise and clever ruler.
would want to be buried in York. Richard was always popular in the area and had much affection for the place and the people. Richard was also the Duke of Gloucester before he became King, so maybe Gloucester could be another place for burial. Birmingham may even be a choice, as it has recently been suggested that Richard may’ve spoken with a West Midlands accent, and Birmingham has its own, perfectly good Cathedral. Whatever happens, and wherever Richard is eventually buried, it seems safe to say that the choice of place will be much grander, and much more suitable, than a council car-park in Leicester, although I think Richard will now always be known as the Car-Park King!
BACK TO SCHOOL 2013 ISSUE
www.primarytimes.net
But a car-park in Leicester is exactly where the bones of King Richard III, the king of England from 1483-1485, were found earlier this year. The council car-park had previously been the site of Greyfriars Church, and Richard had been buried in its grounds after his death at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Greyfriars Church had been destroyed in 1538, and so the burial plot of the last English King of England had been lost, with only a few ancient clues as to where Richard might lie. But after excavation work last year bones and a skull were discovered, and special tests proved that, unbelievably, this was King Richard.

Bears Big Bottom
Vitello lives in a terraced house by a ringroad with his mom, where the traffic is nosy, and his friends are annoying. In this adventure Vitello and his mum have a new car (well, a nearly new car anyway). The car is really mum’s, but the most important thing is that the car must not get scratched, not if Vitello doesn’t want to be grounded, or be in the biggest trouble of his life… If you love the tales of Horrid Henry, then you’re sure to love the adventures of Vitello.
Bear was friendly, Bear was sweet, The nicest bear you’d ever meet! With little paws and little feet, And a very big beat bottom! Oh no! Bear’s Big Bottom is getting him into Big trouble. Can he ever make it up to his friends? With funny illustrations and rhyming text, this is an utterly charming book that young listeners and first readers will love.

THE NEW GENERATION OF WEEKEND DRAMA SCHOOLS FOR AGES 4 TO 18
A NEW GENERATION OF TUITION CENTRES Before founding Genie Tutors in 2009, Luke Scrutton taught for ten years in primary school education. Although Luke found this enjoyable, he felt frustrated by government guidelines that told him how to teach and prevented his pupils reaching their potential. So, four years ago, in consultation with a panel of teaching professionals, Luke established Genie Tutors to create the perfect learning environment for children. Genie Tutors are tuition centres with a difference, where learning is enjoyable and children make huge progress in maths, English and science. Genie Tutors draw on their range of skills and teaching strategies with children in small ability groups of six, which means attention can still be paid to individuals. Using this technique, Genie tutors have been responsible for many success stories, like Jacqueline’s: ‘My daughter started with Genie to build up her confidence in maths and English. She is easily distracted, sometimes
lacked motivation and was behind on her grades at school. Genie Tutors have been absolutely brilliant with her, improving both her grades and her confidence. Before, it could take a whole afternoon to go through her homework with her and she would be in tears because she didn’t understand. Now, she whizzes through them in no time’. - Jacqueline Murphy, parent Genie Tutors help pupils aged 5 – 18 in the core subjects of maths, English and science, either to achieve
their aspirational grades or pass entrance exams. This summer, their first programme aiming to achieve excellence in mathematics predicts the same progress over ten weeks that would normally be expected in a whole academic year. Genie Tutors truly represent a new generation of tuition centres, focused on children enjoying making progress in key academic areas and within the budget of many families.

ACORNS CELEBRATES ITS SILVER ANNIVERSARY WITH A LANTERN WALK Acorns Children’s Hospice has announced a brand new event with its Lantern Walk, taking place on Saturday 12th October. The charity hopes the celebration held in its 25th anniversary year will bring the community together in support of local children living with life limiting and life threatening conditions, many of whom require vital care 24-hours-a-day, 365 days a year. The Autumnal walk will set off from the picturesque lake at Walsall Arboretum. The participants will take a 12km route, each carrying their own battery operated lantern, passing by the hospice and then winding back to the arboretum as the day fades with the sunset. A live music set in the bandstand will greet the walkers as they cross the finish line. As they celebrate their achievement of helping local, life limited children, they are promised a spectacular sight with
hundreds of supporters holding up bright shining lanterns. The participants will then be treated to a stunning finale as a laser light display sparkles over the lake for them. Acorns aims to help to provide palliative care to the 2,000 plus life limited children in the region living with life limiting or threatening conditions, and support for their families. The cause is encouraging families, friends, neighbours and colleagues to join together and sign up to help support its aim. The event is being generously supported by Legal & General and First Personnel, so all funds raised will go directly towards providing vital care and support for local children and their families. Laura Heathfield, Events Manager at Acorns, said: “It’s going to be a magical event but we need lots of people to get involved for it to be a success.
“We rely on fundraising and income from events like this one to provide the care our children need, which can cost £750 per day for each child.” The route is wheelchair and buggy friendly so that everyone can be a part of the special event taking place in the charity’s 25th anniversary year. Registration is £5 and includes a paper lantern, which can be personally decorated, and a 25th anniversary medal for walkers at the finish line. To find out more about the walk or to register visit: www.acorns.org/lantern or contact: events@acorns.org.uk / 0844 984 0405.
