Our Home This is Earth, where humans live. We have lived on Earth for 4.6 billion years and 70% of its surface is water! Earth is the only known planet with life on. We’re a perfectly safe distance away from the sun for us to be able to live on Earth, and our moon stabilizes our tilt.

The Sun and Moon

The Sun provides our planet with heat and light, making life possible on Earth. It is the biggest object in our solar system. Without the bold, golden sun our planet would freeze. There wouldn’t be any wind, ocean currents or clouds to transport any water! Earth orbits the sun, and the moon orbits us!

The Solar System Our universe has eight planets, including Earth. You may have heard of Pluto, which used to be classed as a planet, but because of its size it is now known as a dwarf planet. The other planets are Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn, Neptune, and Mercury.

The Sun The Sun provides solar energy, which is essential for agriculture - farming, growning crops and breeding animals. Harvested food can be cooked through the use of solar energy cookers. These cookers are good for the environment, they don’t use fossil fuels or produce pollution.

Can you travel to space? It is possible to travel through Space, although it takes a lot of time and preparation. Someone who travels into space is called an astronaut. They have to wear a special outfit called a spacesuit, which provides protection for the astronaut. It protects them from extreme temperatures and supplies them with oxygen. A full NASA spacesuit costs 12 million dollars.

Astronauts float in space because of the change in gravity, which mean a lot of our everyday activities can’t be completed in the same way. Eating is different, as there aren’t any refridgerators in space and food must be packaged and stored correctly to prevent spoilage. Salt and pepper come in liquid form. Ice cream comes in a vacumn packed package. Astronaunts are weightless. They have to attach themselves to something whilst sleeping, so they don’t float around and bump into anything.

The Stars There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all of our beaches. Stars produce heat and light, ultraviolet rays, x-rays, alongside other forms of radiation. Nobody knows exactly how many stars exist. But if our universe contains more than 100 billion galaxies, some of which may have more than 100 billion stars. That’s a lot of stars!

5 Facts about Space 1. There have been six human landings on the moon. 2. Astronauts must exercise in space to prevent bone and muscle loss. They do this for two hours daily! 3. Venus is the hottest planet and is covered in volcanoes. 4. In their spare time, astronauts like watching films and listening to their favourite music, and reading. 5. Space is completely silent. Can you imagine a place with absolutely no sound?
