the 'pit’ The ‘Pit’ is a place some of us visit. Sometimes it’s for a day or two, or sometimes you find yourself there for a few months. And this is okay, but once we leave, we can feel unproductive and the looming feeling of self-doubt creeps up. Decorate We’ve all been told ‘messy room, messy mind’. And there’s truth in this, of course. However, a messy room and messy mind means less chance of being productive. A whole room full of clutter and the last few days of ‘I don’t want to move’ builds up and begins to become too much to handle. That’s why you start small - decorate one area and make it your pride and joy. Make it pretty - add cushions, teddy bears, a bed runner and a few blankets. Your bedside table - photos, a bottle of water, lip balm Your lounge - blankets on the sofa, candles on the table Your phone - get a clear phone case and put a picture in

Fold So you’ve made the bed, decorated your desk and created little ‘safe spaces’ to be proud of... what about the rest? The clothes scattered on the floor - they are not a rug! Nor is it a floordrobe or modern art. Just fold your jeans and jumpers and tops and dresses and skirt and shorts. Once you’ve done this, place them nicely on your bed, on a chair or in an organised arrangement. Clear Rather than spending a day taking everything you own out, putting it on the floor and throw away the things that don’t bring joy - take one section of the messiest room, so maybe that one pants and socks drawer you’ve been fighting shut for months, and just clear it out and put them back nicely. Yes, this sounds slightly stupid. Sitting somewhere couldn’t possibly make a difference to how you feel? Wrong. It can affect your mind and thoughts. For example, sitting in the kitchen can feel quite wierd, but set up a space where you can sit and work, or read, or binge watch that new series on Netflix. This can trigger parts in your mind, if you’ve been forgetting to eat, by sitting around food you are more likely to think about the food around you and eventually entise you to bring out those buscuits you’ve been hiding. getting ready ‘Getting ready’ doesn’t mean getting up, picking out the best outfit, dressing yourself up to be fairly comfortable in public. Just refresh yourself. Take five minutes you clean your teeth, brush your hair and put on a bit of deodrant. This is probably is the most important thing when you’re in The Pit. When you feel down, possibly unsafe, and just want to be alone from the world. Tell one trusted person; you don’t have to explain what’s happening or why, just tell them you’re going to take a day away, and ask if they could just check up on you once or twice. Finding a family member or a friend to tell is a big step, and it can be daunting just to say ‘I don’t feel okay today’, but it doesn’t have to be. Just a simple: ‘I’m not feeling well today, just so

you know. Can you message me later on tonight, just to see if I’m alright’’

small steps to tidying your room, mind and day. When you can feel yourself slipping into that pit of despair and the motivation in life begins to disappear on you, it can be hard to bring yourself back. The bedroom gets messy, dishes pile up, laundry becomes a thing of the past. It’s a large task to handle at once, and an even harder task to even think about where to begin. If you’re a student, a full-time adult or just someone who struggles to keep your head above water, with these little steps it doesn’t have to be that hard. Taking small steps, that aren’t even tidying your whole room, can put you on the right track to getting through the day. Look at the smaller picture - like your bedroom. Then look even smaller - your bed. It can only take five minutes to feel accomplished.
