ESSENTIAL CULTURE The Culture Team have put together a few of their current cultural favourites.

THEATRE Woman In Black

Dubbed the ‘most terrifying live theatre experience in the world.’ It follows Arthur Kipps as he unearths the tragic secrets and terrible purpose of the woman in black. This showing is part of the 25th anniversary tour, so expect big things from this critically acclaimed fright fest. At Royal Theatre, Bath from 2-7 December. TV Orange is the New Black

A Netflix original series based on the true story of Piper Chapman, a middle class ‘wasp’ sent to prison for a crime she committed a decade ago, this programme gives us a realistic look at life behind bars. However, it’s the assortment of eccentric and well written minor characters that give the show it’s outstanding personality.

GAMES Papers, Please

This 2D pixel game has flown under the gaming radar but this oddly absorbing piece is one you need to see. It is a ‘dystopian communism simulator’ that will see you barely notice your 2-hour sampler turning into a 10-hour spree. I checked paperwork, detained troublemakers and shot the odd terrorist. This is a game ofmoral choices and gritty decisions with costly mistakes.

BOOKS The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

This New York Times number one bestseller is a rollercoaster ride of emotion. Follow Hazel and Augustus, who both have cancer, through their teenage lives, the beautiful streets of Amsterdam and the ups and downs of their illnesses. The love and friendship between these two will leave you breathless and hopeful that every dark side has a shimmer of light.

REVIEW: BATH BREW HOUSE Bath has recently welcomed The Bath Brew House to its collection of cosy pubs. In this increasingly chilly weather, the warm lighting and alluring atmosphere is a temptation I simply couldn’t resist – and I’m glad I didn’t. Walking in off James Street West is like walking into your family home at Christmas. You’re welcomed into a comfortable environment with great beer, delectable food and an unbeatable vibe. Once through the door, you will see The James Street Brewery at work, where the magic of artisan beer making happens.

The bar offers 3 of the Brew House’s own beers: their classic best bitter, Gladiator; their hoppy pale ale, Emperor; and their seasonal brews. As we’re approaching Christmas, why not try the mulled cider or a delicious dark hot chocolate. It also offers a tasty menu – from sharing boards and snacks to a full three-course indulgence – which you can watch being prepared in the open kitchen. Here you will find a charcoal spit where the Brew House produces its signature spit-roast chicken every Sunday lunchtime – and a smokehouse, used to

smoke and cure various meats, cheeses, fish and vegetables. Aside from the main bar, there is a dining area and a soothing sun-trap garden with an outdoor bar and barbeque. If you’re looking for a unique drinking and dining experience, then pay a visit to this enchanting new pub. BY LUCY BUSHELL

ODD ONE OUT: RIDLEY SCOTT In the first of a brand new series of articles, Jordan Forward searches for the weak link in the near-perfect career of director Ridley Scott. Ridley Scott is not a name that should be used lightly when discussing film. There’s no doubting his successes or cinematic qualities, but he is only human and is prone to a fair share of cock-ups. He might have some outstanding works under his belt but he is far from perfect. Though his worst films may not be completely awful, they are still well overdue for a good hiding. So let’s start with what might be Scott’s first real howler…

BATH’S HOMELESS

news

Frankie Towle reports on the current state of homeslessness in Bath as we approach the harsh winter season. To read the full article click here. Although there are nine organisations in Bath to help people living in extreme poverty, the number of rough sleepers is on the rise. Homelessness is a recurring problem in every city, but Bath is such an affluent area that it only exacerbates the situation. ‘The class divide is a big problem’, says Steven, who has been homeless for two years. Extreme poverty in Bath has reached a tenyear high, whilst the city’s tourism sector is booming. The situation is serious enough for Bath & North East Somerset Council to

redirect funding from other areas of their budget to address the issue. A general lack of housing in the south means ‘you get kicked out of one place and you have nowhere to go’, he tells me. ‘There are a lot of big problems in this city but the amount of housing is definitely the worst’. This lack of accommodation is forcing people into temporary housing and into situations that are difficult to escape. Bath has subsequently become one of the worst affected cities in Britain – in

proportion to its size – for homelessness. Not enough is being done to aid these people in the worst times of their lives.
