Fight Pregnancy Symptoms with These Feel-good Pregnancy Nutrients

If you're like most expecting moms, you've already heard that a healthy, whole foods diet is best for you and baby, one that features plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and lean proteins. However, many expecting moms are also battling nausea and indigestion, especially during the earliest stages. That can make the idea of eating nutrientdense, high-fiber foods less appealing. All the while, it doesn't make you worry any less about getting all the nourishment the two of you need. "With morning sickness, gassiness and managing the pain of swollen joints, feeling good during pregnancy can be a challenge for any woman," says Elizabeth Somer, registered dietitian and Vitamin Packs Medical Advisor. "The good news is, there are lots of things you can do to maintain a healthy diet and feel as good as possible during your pregnancy."

Manage through Morning Sickness Not long after you celebrate your pregnancy, morning sickness may settle in while your energy levels really start to lag. You can thank the surge of new hormones going through your body. At the same time, you may be concerned about getting enough folic acid (vitamin B9), as this is an essential nutrient that supports the baby's brain and spinal cord development. While nausea can dampen anyone's desire to eat, it's important to make sure you're still nourishing your body. Try eating smaller meals throughout the day, don't lie down after eating, and always take your prenatal vitamins with food. Choosing the right vitamins can help, too. Prenatal vitamins from Vitamin Packs are made with organic ginger and a more absorbable form of vitamin B6, helping to ease your upset stomach and nausea.

Somer shares nutrition tips and the top nutrients to help you feel your best and support your health during pregnancy.

Get the Nourishment You and Baby Need Somer recommends every expecting mother take a multivitamin during pregnancy, starting with a quick online assessment on VitaminPacks.com/prepostnatal. Your medications, diet and health concerns will be factored into your personalized selection of supplements, so you can be assured that taking them will be safe and effective during this critical time. You also can pull from their online library to get more information about any of their supplements. And, if you have any further questions or concerns about getting your nutritional needs met, a consultation with a nutritionist is just a phone call away. You deserve the best foundation of nutritional support that's personalized for you and baby.

Mind Your Portions After you get past that challenging first trimester, you'll most likely be more in the mood to eat. Remember, weight gain is perfectly normal and healthy. In fact, you will need to consume extra calories to support the changes and development taking place inside your body. By the time you're ready to give birth, your blood volume can go up as much as 60 percent, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Even so, steer clear of the "eating for two" mindset. Too much weight can worsen your health, and keep you from feeling your best, especially if it leads to gestational diabetes and other serious health conditions. Talk to your doctor and take the advice on how many calories you should consume in a day.

Eat Your Fish During pregnancy, your baby's brain is undergoing rapid development. To support this, opt for foods that are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids, especially during the second trimester. Common foods that contain these good fats are fatty fish, such as mackerel, salmon and herring. If the idea of eating fish makes you queasy, there are vegetarian sources available in the form of algae DHA omega-3 supplements.

Choose Plenty of Fruits and Veggies There's a bounty of nutrients and micronutrients found in produce that can help mother and baby in numerous ways. Antioxidants found in dark colored produce, such as blueberries, broccoli and carrots, support the baby's brain health. Plus, eating fruits and veggies is one way to stay hydrated and relieve constipation (which is all too common during pregnancy).

Get ready for motherhood by taking on a healthy mindset and a nourishing diet. You and your baby will both reap the benefits!

Understanding Ovulation and the Best Days to Conceive

Many women trying to conceive are confused about their period, the 28-day cycle and when they're most likely to get pregnant. When a couple is planning to have a baby, understanding the 28-day cycle can mean the difference between success and disappointment, says Gloria RichardDavis, MD, Ob/Gyn, fertility specialist and author of Planning Parenthood. Timing is a critical factor when you're trying to get pregnant. As more and more women are waiting to conceive until later in life, we have seen an uptick in fertility tracking technologies - from apps to wearables that help women pinpoint their most fertile days. However, it's important to supplement an app or fertility monitor with simple ovulation tests to accurately identify your fertile days. Each month, the body prepares for ovulation, or the release of an egg from the ovaries. The cycle begins on the first day of menstruation and serves as a detox to dispose of old uterine lining and make way for the next cycle. Day one, the first day of menstrual bleeding or spotting, represents a new opportunity to conceive. Days eleven-sixteen are the

NB8

optimal time to kick-start baby-making efforts, as ovulation is nearing. A simple at-home ovulation predictor kit like First Response Ovulation Test Kit will identify your two most fertile days by pinpointing a surge in the luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers ovulation. Women can maximize their chances by having sex within 24-36 hours after detecting this luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. If a sperm successfully fertilizes the egg, conception occurs. The lining of the uterus thickens between day seventeen and twenty-four, and if the egg and sperm have successfully met, the fertilized egg will soon implant or attach to the uterine lining (endometrium). The end of the cycle is near, and PMS symptoms may present themselves if pregnancy has not occurred, as progesterone peaks around day twenty-one or twenty-two.

If you think you might be pregnant, but haven't missed your period yet, try the First Response Triple Check Pregnancy Test Kit. It includes one Early Result Pregnancy Test that can let you know six days before your missed period, a Digital Pregnancy Test for women who like to

see a yes/no answer, and a Rapid Result Pregnancy Test to take on the day of your missed period or anytime after.

Other important considerations to keep in mind when trying to conceive include: Read our blog for more articles… ● Keeping a healthy, well-balanced diet and practicing stress relief. ● Prenatal vitamins with sufficient folic acid like prescription OB Complete are critical even before trying to conceive to ensure a healthy pregnancy journey for both mom and baby. ● Vaginal dryness is twice as common in women who are trying to conceive due to the stress of 'sex on demand.' Traditional lubricants can harm sperm motility, which is why using a fertilityfriendly lubricant like Pre-Seed is crucial, as it encourages sperm to swim freely and meet an egg.

Don't guess at your fertile window when it's so easy to identify the best time to conceive. Every woman is born with millions of immature eggs, but the quantity and quality of remaining eggs, known as the ovarian reserve, decreases. If you're not able to get pregnant, your ovarian reserve may be low. Tracking ovulation can be challenging as well, especially if your menstrual cycle is irregular. Remember to note your cycle and its symptoms so you can discuss concerns with your medical provider and schedule a preconception checkup.

aring for a baby is one of the toughest jobs. However, certain innovations are helping new and veteran parents do so with confidence. With millennial moms getting more of their parenting information from social media, consider taking a cue from Babypalooza NYC, an event for media and digital influencers to preview the best new baby products on the market. Its curator, Karyn Ravin, a mom of two, offers these recommendations for the latest in baby care.

Promote Health Put a new spin on ancient baby care with essential oils. Extracted from plants and flowers, they promote sleep and soothe stuffy noses, tummy troubles and more, and now, administering them is easy with Oilogic, a collection of natural roll-on products.

Babies don’t know how to blow their noses, making common cold and allergy symptoms more than just a nuisance. Help your baby breathe easily with Nosiboo Pro, a next-generation nasal aspirator. Powerful but gentle, this BPAfree, easy-to-clean medical device was developed with the help of otolaryngologists. Personal care for little ones with sensitive skin can be easy and fun with safe, gentle and pure hair and skin products. Those from Little Green, feature all-natural fragrances and phthalate and BPA-free packaging. The hypoallergenic formulas are also clinically tested and dermatologist tested and are allergen, paraben, sulfate and gluten-free. What’s important for your skin’s comfort and health is important for your baby, too. However, your products are likely too harsh for little ones. Seek

natural, sensitive skin essentials like shampoo, diaper cream, bubble bath, mineral sunscreen, wipes and more, that are designed to heal and soothe, such as those from Babo Botanicals.

formula separately until you’re ready to feed.

Promoting healthy foot development includes having proper shoes. Check out brands recognized by the American Podiatric Medical Association, such as Pediped, which offers fashion-forward, affordable styles for every walking stage.

New baby essentials are freeing up hands, time, energy and storage space. Look for items that empower your family in these ways with intuitive design, such as b.box, offering items like sippy cups with weighted straws that allow tots to drink at any angle and light space-saving diaper caddies that can be carried from room to room.

Get Active Whether you’re a runner, urban explorer or outdoor adventurer, when you have baby in tow, the right stroller matters. For a smooth, comfortable ride for baby and lightweight maneuverability for you, check out all-terrain, ergonomic strollers from Thule. Parenting invariably means carrying bulky, heavy items. Consider a stroller designed to bear your load. Those from Austlen expand to store cargo like groceries, luggage and beach equipment, and fold down when you’re traveling light. Quit your endless search for a changing station with Beanko, a sanitary, convenient and durable mobile diaper changing station that features storage pockets and doubles as a tummy-time mat.

Simplify Home Life

Prepare your home for all your baby’s adventures with pediatrician and dermatologist-recommended products such as those from Babyganics, which include detergent, dryer sheets, multi surface cleaners and dish soap. Optimize nutrition with a feeding ecosystem specifically created for breastmilk. Check out Nanobébé, which allows moms to pump, store and prep breastmilk without exposing it to nutrient-damaging temperatures.

By embracing market innovations, you can help ensure your baby is happy, health and safe, at home and on-the-go.

Ensure Every Diaper Change is Easy Having a baby is one of the most exciting, yet stressful times of one’s life. And one of the more daunting aspects of this experience for many new parents is changing diapers. Even if you’ve changed a diaper before, you’ll now be doing this more times than you’ll care to count! Here are some tips to help ensure every diaper change is an easy experience for both parents and babies.

● Get stocked: Beyond your official changing station and your diaper bag, prepare yourself for quicker clean-ups

wherever you are in the house by storing diapers, a portable changing pad and wipes in multiple rooms, as well as maintaining an emergency supply kit in your car. Visit Grandma and Grandpa a lot? If possible, make life a bit easier by keeping a small supply of these essentials at the homes of friends and family you see the most. ● Avoid diaper rash: Many parents wait until there is a problem to kick rash and irritation. However, diaper rash cream can be an effective preventive measure when applied correctly.

NB12 Natural Baby Magazine August 2018 | © 2018 Publish In Paradise www.NaturalBabyMag.com

To help your baby avoid the discomfort that comes with diaper rash, get in the routine of applying a cream, like Boudreaux’s Butt Paste with every diaper change, directly on baby’s skin and also right on the diaper itself. This helps create an additional barrier between the diaper and baby’s skin.

If your baby has diaper rash, you want a solution that works as soon as possible. Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is pediatricianrecommended, kicks rash fast and starts relieving irritated skin on contact. Plus, it contains no harsh ingredients, like parabens, preservatives, dyes, phthalates and talc.

For easy clean-up, wipe off excess diaper rash cream with a baby wipe before washing hands with water. ● Make it fun: Keep baby distracted with chit chat and songs. You may even want to stock your dedicated changing area with a few rattles or other washable toys.

A few simple habits and tricks can make your diaper-changing routine easy on both you and baby.

Source: StatePoint

● Be prepared: Have a lot of extra plastic bags from your grocery store trips? Stick some in your diaper bag! They are handy for storing dirty diapers on-the-go or dirty clothes that didn’t survive a dreaded diaper blowout. ● Reduce odor: New diaper pail designs can help reduce odors and the spread of germs. Look for hands-free options with tight-fitting lids. Metal may be a better bet over plastic, as it is less likely to be porous. And of course, be sure to take out the trash often! ● Keep things sanitary: Wash your hands before and after you change your baby’s diaper. You are about to get your hands dirty again, but for your baby’s health and safety, it’s important not to skip that first step.

5 Fantastic Energy-boosting Snacks for Fitness Success

F

or most new moms, getting back to your pre-pregnancy weight is on the top of your list. Taking care of your new baby causes many sleepless nights and is a huge drain on your energy. A fitness regimen and eating healthy can boost your energy levels and help you lose weight, once your body is ready. One way you can start to get fit is by running. You can even buy a good jogging stroller and take baby with you. A good goal as a runner is to take part in a marathon–and it doesn’t have to be in your area. You can participate in a marathon in another state; take the whole family for a mini-vacay while you meet your marathon goals.

As marathon season approaches, many people are focused on training. Building up endurance is key, but you can't do that without the fuel your body needs. Wholesome energy-boosting snacks are essential for keeping up the pace,

whether you're focused on a 5K or full marathon. There are a variety of runs across the country to suit every type of runner. Fun runs vary in size and can be found in communities from coast to coast. Themed runs are also plentiful. Whether you're a new or experienced runner, completing your goal will make you feel accomplished. To help your body feel and perform at its best, you need to give it the right foods. These smart, tasty snacks will help give you sustained energy with loads of nutrients important to any fitness practice.

Bananas: The cheerful color and built-in packaging are just the start. Bananas are a good source of potassium, which helps prevent cramping. Plus, they are a wonderful source of natural sugars (the good kind) and carbohydrates, which help provide sustained energy. It's a common misconception that bananas

aren't as healthy due to the higher sugar content; however, the natural sugars in bananas come with fiber, which slows digestion and gives the body time to use it as fuel instead of storing it as fat. Grab a bunch of Chiquita bananas at the store and you have a convenient pre-workout snack or perfect addition to your recovery shake.

1/8 cup fresh pineapple juice

Cottage cheese: Scoop up some of this white wonder and enjoy with your favorite fruit or a sprinkle of your preferred herbs. You can also add a satisfying crunch by sprinkling in omega-rich cashews or almonds. Cottage cheese is packed with protein, so it helps you feel full longer, essential for long runs (or simply long days full of to-dos). For fitness folks, this protein helps assist in rebuilding and repair of muscles during training periods.

Edamame: More than just a delicious appetizer at your favorite sushi joint, edamame is an ideal workout snack. The tasty green soybeans you pluck from the pod are a good source of protein, iron and B vitamins. What's more, the hearthealthy isoflavones support bone health. So dig in and enjoy with a dash of sea salt and a big glass of water. It's perfect when you're craving a salty snack so you can avoid the junk.

Smoothies: Refreshing, energizing and perfectly customizable, smoothies feel more like a treat than a healthy snack. Yet these cold concoctions are perfect as pre- or post-workout foods or even as a meal replacement when on the go. You can use milk or juice as a liquid base and then add in fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables as desired. For a lip-smacking smoothie with just four ingredients, follow this recipe:

Chocolate milk: If you don't run, you probably think chocolate milk is just for kids. In reality, chocolate milk has almost a cult-like following in the endurance sports world. It's rich in calcium to keep bones strong, particularly important for runners. Plus it has protein and carbohydrates to keep you fueled. Reward yourself with this sweet treat after a run and you'll feel satisfied all around.

Quick Protein Power Chiquita Banana Smoothie

With these snacking tips top of mind, you'll be fueled and feeling your best to start aiming for your personal records!

Farmstead Apothecary’s Lavender & Chamomile Baby Powder

We reviewed this new baby powder with infant, Kyle Willard-Wilson when he was about six-weeks old. After his bath time, his mother, Tanisha, and grandmother used Farmstead Apothecary’s Lavender & Chamomile Baby Powder on Kyle to help soak up any moisture before dressing him. Tanisha enjoyed the calming scent of lavender but was surprised at the gritty feel of the powder. It was not soft and silky like cornstarch or other baby powders. Kyle was fussy throughout the powdering, but it is unknown if it was because of the feel of the powder or because he had just had a bath and wanted to be warm and nurse.

We love the idea of an all natural baby powder that includes lavender and chamomile. We are not sure if the tapioca starch is to blame for the “grit” in the powder but for us to not like the gritty

Lansinoh® Nursie Breastfeeding Pillow We absolutely love the Lansinoh® Nursie Breastfeeding Pillow! This nursing pillow was designed by a breastfeeding mom to “offer more comfortable positioning for baby and mom to support successful breastfeeding.” As a grandma, I love this “nursing” pillow. When I would hold a baby to bottle-feed, using the Lansinoh® Nursie Breastfeeding Pillow was like having a pillow built into my arm for baby to lay his head on. This fabulous pillow is not just for breastfeeding moms, but for us grand-moms too! This could also be an excellent pillow to have in a daycare where there are bottle-fed (or nursing) babies. Moms could stop in to the daycare and comfortably nurse their little one with the Nursie pillow using a football or cradle hold.

bag for easy transport. You can use it at home and on the go. Their packaging claims that this pillow is perfect for C-section tummies. One of our reviewers, Tanisha, had a cesarean when she gave birth to her son, Kyle. She tried using the pillow to nurse but Kyle, being a newborn, was so small that it didn’t fit him well. His head would not go into a comfortable position for feeding when she tried nursing him with the pillow. She was unable to reap any benefit from the pillow while healing from her c-section. However, she tried using the Nursie later when Kyle was a couple months old. He was able to get into a more comfortable position while nursing and Tanisha still uses the Nursie to this day. She loves the Nursie pillow that offers her new son a soft place to lay his head while nursing. We love the Lansinoh® Nursie Breastfeeding Pillow and we are sure you moms and grand-moms will love it too!

Lansinoh® HPA Lanolin Image of the Lansinoh® HPA Lanolin.

Most moms know that lanolin works great for healing and softening sore, cracked and even bleeding nipples. It is a must-have for nursing moms, especially with the first nursing baby. Lanolin is often given away at the hospitals for moms who choose to breastfeed. According to the packaging, Lansinoh® HAP Lanolin, “soothes and protects sore nipples, is safe for both mom and baby and is 100-percent natural and hypoallergenic.” They also claim that you can use lanolin to moisturize your lips, soothe your dry, cracked heals, and you can even use it to make your own blush using lanolin and your favorite lipstick–a great idea in a pinch.

I used lanolin when I was nursing, and it really did work wonders to help heal and soothe my sore, cracked and yes, bleeding nipples. After trying again to test the other claims, I have to say that this Lansinoh® HAP Lanolin is not just for nipples! I tried the lanolin on my lips to smooth and moisturize–which yes it does, but the flavor made me not want it on my

lips again. It is also a bit “gooey” which I don’t like the feel of on my lips. So while it may work on your lips, you may not want the taste or goo in your mouth. As for making my own blush with my lipstick, I suggest not using the type of lipstick that is “painted” on–like the type I typically use. I tried it with a “normal” cream lipstick, and mixed some with a dab of lanolin to blush my cheeks. Yup, it worked. My cheeks were blushed with a hue that matched my lips. I didn’t like the feel of the lanolinlipstick blush on my cheeks. I could feel the weight of it and it left my cheeks feeling a little tacky, like drying paint. I am more of a powder blush gal. I tried the lanolin on my dry, cracked heels one evening, and the next morning they were silky smooth and the cracks were already on the mend–after one night. That reason alone makes this product a must-have for every woman, nursing or not. Lanolin is definitely worth having–I would suggest the travel size for carrying in your purse so you can use it to moisten your lips and blush your face in a pinch. And of course for nursing moms and those of us with dry heels, it’s a must.
