Belly cast painted by HJ Gillespie

! p m u B y b a Cast Your B Making a cast of your pregnant belly is one way to forever treasure the joyous parts of your pregnancy, especially for your first (or last) child. With this "recipe" you can make a cast of your baby bump. Once your cast is made, there are several things you can do to embellish it--make a mosaic on it, paint it, bronze it or leave it aunatural. If you make a cast, or if you have one made, we would love to share your experience (with photos) with our readers. Materials You Will Need: ● Plaster gauze strips. Cut into 12" to 18" sections. Make sure you have enough to cover the entire area you want to cast. ● Natural lubricant, such as olive oil.

Photos by Allison https://flic.kr/p/4qeHoP

● Drop cloth, newspapers or other way to protect your floors and furniture. ● Shallow pan of warm water. ● Plastic wrap to protect areas not being cast. ● Someone to help you!

Make Your Cast Strip down to your underwear (if you wear them!) and coat your body in olive oil or whatever natural lubricant you have chosen. Anything not lubricated will get plastered so make sure your hair and other parts are well coated. Use plastic wrap over your hair and other areas to ensure they don't get plastered (even if wearing underwear). While you are getting prepared and protected, have your helper prepare the plaster gauze strips as instructed on the package, and the shallow pan of warm water. Once you and your helper are prepared, get comfortable and get into the position you want so casting is easier--belly only, full torso with breasts, or even including your upper thighs. When you are in the position desired and you are seated comfortably, your helper can start casting. The plaster dries quickly, so cast quickly--you can help with your belly area as long as you're not moving out of your pose. (Continued on page 6)

(Continued from page 5)

Once your casting is complete and the plaster has dried and set, you will feel it pull away from your body and you can wriggle out of the cast. You can add extra casting material to the inside of your cast to reinforce any weak areas. Take it gently and hang it from a prepared area by clothespins, or lay it atop large inflated balloons or even balled up newspapers or towels to help your cast keep its shape while drying. Let it dry for a couple days before you embellish it. Once dried, you can gently sand away any rough areas of your cast, then coat it with a decoupage glaze or art primer. Then you can decorate it any way you want. there are lots of ideas to choose from on the Internet, and you can get ideas from friends and family who have made a cast of their pregnant belly.

Once your cast is completed, take photos and send one to us so we can display your beautiful work of art (if you want). You can hang your cast or have it mounted on an art display. After your bundle of joy enters the world, you can add their information on the inside of the cast--name, date of birth, etc. and you can even add their tiny footprints, using a baby safe ink pad. Cast away!

The recipe is an excerpt from "Make your Own Pregnant Belly Cast" at Enter Gently. You can read the entire post here: http://entergentlyblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/m ake-your-own-pregnant-belly-cast.html

Oh, Baby! 5 unexpected (but common) symptoms experienced during pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting time in a woman's life, filled with countless physical, emotional and lifestyle changes. Pregnant women often do research, read books or consult friends and family to determine what to expect during those nine months and how to best combat the symptoms that may arise. While issues like morning sickness and cravings are to be expected, there are several uncomfortable, but common, effects soon-to-be moms may be less likely to anticipate. "A woman is going to experience numerous changes to her body during pregnancy," says Dr. Alyssa Dweck, an OB-GYN, author and expert on women's health. "Although there is abundant information about issues like backaches and morning sickness, there are a number of common symptoms women are

less inclined to talk about because they either consider them taboo or embarrassing." While each woman's pregnancy experience will be unique, Dr. Dweck shares some of the lesser-known, but common, health nuisances to expect when expecting: 1. Constipation Some common causes of constipation among pregnant women include increased progesterone levels, which influences intestinal motility, increased pressure from the growing uterus and the recommended supplementation of iron. To help diminish constipation, women can try increasing their fiber and fluid intake and limit iron supplements to three times a week. (Continued on page 8)

2. Yeast Infections The hormonal changes that come with pregnancy often increase the chance of developing a vaginal yeast infection. However, according to a 2016 Danish nationwide cohort study, even a single, low dose of fluconazole (the leading prescription pill to treat yeast infections) may increase miscarriage risk. Instead, Dr. Dweck recommends MONISTAT 7 for vaginal yeast infections, as it relieves symptoms four times faster and works on more of the most common strains of yeast than the prescription oral pill. Nevertheless, women should always check with their own healthcare provider before using any treatment during pregnancy.

3. Heartburn Heartburn and indigestion are most frequent during the third trimester, as the growing uterus places pressure on the stomach and the muscle tone of the esophagus relaxes. To help minimize heartburn, eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day, sit or stand after a meal and avoid spicy, greasy and fatty foods. OTC antacids are typically safe, but it is important to speak to an OB-GYN before taking.

the pelvis, lower extremities and the rectal area. Elevate the legs to improve circulation, avoid sitting or standing in the same position for extended lengths of time and try to exercise regularly, if possible.

5. Body and Facial Hair Growth Hair is likely to grow faster and thicker during pregnancy on places other than just the head. Higher levels of estrogen extend the growth phase of hair, leading to less shedding and denser locks. Safe ways to get rid of these unwanted hairs during pregnancy include tweezing, waxing and shaving.

Regardless of whether a result of pregnancy is considered normal, pregnant women should readily consult their OB-GYN if they experience any changes or if they are looking for treatment solutions. Though health nuisances are bound to pop up during pregnancy, there are simple solutions to combat them so women can make the most of this wonderful time and prep for the arrival of baby. 5 Weight Loss Tips from A Woman Who Lost 128 Pounds Morgan Root, an Army veteran, after dropping 128 pounds.

Going through pregnancy and childbirth can leave you feeling like your body aged dramatically with extra pounds that you don’t seem to have the time to get rid of. Sometimes the best advice comes from someone who’s been there, done that. So, if you’re working towards losing weight, why not consider the wisdom of someone who faced this challenge, and did so with great success? Morgan Root, an Army veteran, found that after the birth of her second child, the scale kept going up instead of down. Determined to make a change, Morgan committed to losing weight and shed an inspiring 128 pounds. Here are her tips to help you lose weight:

1. Make your excuse your motivation. When you flip your excuses into your motivation, it’s amazing how much you can accomplish. Always remind yourself of why you started and what your motivation is when things get tough. “For me, my kids used to be my excuse for why I couldn’t work out or make myself a priority, but now they’re my motivation,” says Root. 2. Find a weight loss plan that works for you. Finding a plan that works for you is so important to fuel your weight loss goals and create sustainable success. “Being in the army, I was used to structure. As a result, I turned to Nutrisystem, which provided the framework I needed to help me lose the weight,” says Root, who is also a busy mom. (Continued on page 10)

(Continued from page 9)

“Having portion-controlled meals delivered to my home made it easier. My favorite food is the Margherita Pizza. I could eat pizza when my kids had pizza and didn’t have to think about counting, measuring or weighing anything. It was a win-win!” 3. Increase your water intake. Water is so important to your overall health, so invest in a new water bottle and drink up! A study found that when people drink six cups (48 ounces) of cold water, they increase their resting calorie burn by up to 50 calories per day. Water also helps you feel full and potentially eat less. Sometimes when you think you are hungry, you are actually just thirsty. Aim for 64 ounces per day.

for at least 30 minutes a day. By the end of the week, you’ll have burned as many as 200 extra calories per day.

A weight loss journey is never easy, no matter how much you have to lose, but it’s absolutely worth it. “I have found myself again. I am stronger, healthier, confident, driven and determined more than ever,” says Root.

4. Change your rewards and comforts. When something good happens in life, we often reward ourselves with food, and when something bad happens we comfort ourselves with the same. Find other ways to reward yourself, like buying something new. Comfort yourself by taking a bath or long shower. Chances are, you’ll forget about wanting that food. 5. Get moving. Being active not only benefits your weight loss journey, it can also clear your head and will help you feel better overall. Aim for three 10-minute exercise sessions daily. Do a quick workout video before work in the morning, take a conference call on-the-go at lunch and take your dog for an extra walk around the neighborhood when you get home. No matter what, always aim to be active

Love Your Baby's Belly--Make Your Own Baby Food By Angela J. Willard for Natural Baby Magazine

When my babies were ready for solid foods (about 4-6 months depending on the baby's nutritional needs), my favorite gizmo was the baby food grinder. Rather than spending a lot of money buying jarred baby foods, I opted to make my babies' foods as much as possible. It isn't as convenient as store bought baby foods, I will admit that; however, I knew exactly what was going into my baby's tummy, because I made it.

food grinder and in a couple minutes we had homemade baby food. Whatever they didn't eat, was stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container for the next mealtime. I used the baby food grinder until they had their teeth and were able to "grind" their own foods.

Many of the foods that I would grind up were the foods we were having with our meals, without any seasonings or spices--especially salt. It was just food, and my babies gobbled it up! It may sound bland to us, but we become accustomed to flavors and the certain tastes we love (or don't). Our babies are not born with a "taste" for certain foods or seasonings, we are the ones who help them become accustomed to our tastes by how we feed them. So if we feed them healthy, unseasoned foods from the start, then they will be able to eat those "bland" foods without complaint.

If you are feeding your babies homemade foods, be sure to give them foods they can have for their age. Up to one year they should not have certain foods that could trigger an allergic reaction, such as strawberries, peanut products, eggs, wheat, or fish. According to WebMD, "Waiting a few days after introducing a new food to your baby is a good way to monitor for allergic reactions." Honey can cause infant botulism, which is a serious food poisoning, and should not be given to babies under one year.

Initially, what they ate was store bought--infant cereals--mainly rice cereal, which I mixed with breast milk or formula. At about six months is the best time to begin introducing them to fruits and vegetables--like bananas, apples, avocados, steamed carrots, cooked peas, etc. I would put the foods in the baby

For more information on what your baby can eat at her age, consult your pediatrician. WebMD also has a baby food timeline available here: https://www.webmd.com/parenting/ba by/baby-food-timeline

5 Things to Consider When Buying a Stroller Choose a stroller that can grow with your family.

A

stroller is one of the most essential pieces of baby gear, typically needed right from the start and used for several years. However, with so many stroller varieties available and a wide range of features to consider, it can be hard to figure out which one is right for your family.

Erin Varano, brand marketing director at trusted baby and children gear manufacturer Graco, offers these five key questions to consider when buying a stroller: 1. Does the Stroller Meet Safety Standards? Look for a stroller that has been certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) to ensure it meets current safety standards. Also, do your

research beforehand to make sure it hasn't been recalled. Avoid this question by buying from a reputable retailer. 2. Does the Stroller Have an Adjustable Seat? Newborns need seats that recline to a near flat position until they have head control and can sit up on their own. Even for older babies or toddlers, a reclining seat is a plus for comfort. Make sure to check that the seat’s recline mechanism is easy-to-use and firmly locks into the recline position. 3. How Versatile is the Stroller? Single strollers with the ability to convert to a double are useful as well as practical. Look for a stroller that (Continued on page 17)

Don't Overpay Your Taxes! Commonly overlooked credits and deductions

W

ith tax season in full swing, take time to consider how to get the most out of your tax return, which includes finding all the credits and deductions available to you. While many taxpayers claim common deductions, such as home mortgage interest and self-employment expenses, there are additional tax deductions that can lessen your final tax bill or increase your refund. These often-overlooked tax breaks could potentially save you hundreds - maybe even thousands - of dollars if you itemize deductions. To start, get to know the difference between tax credits and tax deductions. Tax credits reduce the amount you owe in taxes. In some circumstances, tax credits allow a refundable credit, meaning you

may not only reduce the amount you owe to $0, but you can also get money back. Deductions, on the other hand, simply reduce your taxable income. Both can have a potentially significant impact on your taxes and are often worth the extra effort to include on your return. Some commonly overlooked credits include: 1. Child and Dependent Care Credit You can claim a credit of up to $2,100 for day care for your dependents so you and your spouse can work. Qualifying dependents include children under 13 and parents who are no longer able to care for themselves.

NB14 Natural Baby Magazine February 2018 | Š 2018 Publish In Paradise www.NaturalBabyMag.com

2. Earned Income Tax Credit

2. Tax-Preparation Fees

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal tax credit based on your income and the number of qualifying children living with you. Nearly 1 in 5 people who qualify fail to claim the credit, worth up to $6,318. Just because you didn't qualify last year doesn't mean you won't this year; one-third of the EITC-eligible population changes each year based on marital, parental and financial status.

Plan for tax time. Tax laws change and so do life circumstances. Using a professional to help you file your return may be a wise investment. For example, the tax pros at Jackson Hewitt can help you get every deduction and credit you deserve and the biggest refund possible. Plus, the cost of preparing your taxes can be claimed if you itemize your deductions. In fact, one missed credit or deduction could more than cover the cost of having your taxes prepared by a tax professional.

3. Saver's Credit or the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit Make sure you "pay yourself first." Even if it is only $20 each pay cycle, make sure you are putting some money into a retirement fund. If your company offers a retirement savings plan, like a 401(k), it is usually in your best interest to participate. If your income is lower than $60,000, you can receive a credit of up to $1,000 for a contribution of up to $2,000 into an IRA or an employer-provided retirement account, such as a 401(k). The credit is in addition to any deduction or exclusion from income for the contribution.

3. New Moms Breast pumps and lactation supplies are considered medical equipment, which means they qualify for a possible deduction.

4. Career Corner

Some tax deductions that allow you to reduce your taxable income include:

Job hunting often means investing both time and money. However, you may be able to deduct some of the job-search expenses you incur. Costs such as preparing resumes, creating and maintaining websites, business cards, agency fees and travel expenses may be eligible.

1. Moving Expenses

5. Wedding Bells

If you moved for a job that is at least 50 miles away from your home and held this job for at least 39 weeks, you can claim your moving expenses even if you don't itemize deductions.

If you were married in a church or at a historical site during the past year, you may be able to deduct fees paid to the venue as a charitable donation. (Continued on page 16)

maximize your refund and learn more at JacksonHewitt.com. Refund Advance If you're getting a refund, you typically want it as soon as possible, but that isn't always an option, especially if you are one of the millions of Americans who claim either the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit. You could access up to $3,200 with a no-fee Refund Advance loan at zero percent annual percentage rate (APR), offered by MetaBank, at participating Jackson Hewitt locations. Terms apply, visit JacksonHewitt.com for details.

6. Medical Fitness Did You Know? While general toning and fitness workouts to improve general health are considered personal expenses, you may be able to deduct your gym membership as a medical expense. If a doctor diagnoses you with a specific medical condition, such as obesity or hypertension, or a specific physical or mental illness, and prescribes workouts or participation in a weight-loss program to treat your illness, the membership dues may be taxdeductible.

1. The IRS, as well as many states, allows taxpayers to catch up on missed credits or deductions, offering a threeyear window for filing an amended tax return. You can secure unclaimed credits and deductions by filing amended tax returns to avoid losing any unclaimed funds from as far back as 2014.

(Continued on page 17)

7. Road Warriors If you travel for business and aren't reimbursed by your employer, those costs can qualify as a deduction. Every possible tax credit and deduction can help when money is tight. You might qualify for at least one overlooked credit or deduction - and maybe more than one. Consult a tax professional to discuss how you can

can grow with your family, such as the Graco Uno2Duo Stroller and Travel System. This new stroller is out-of-thebox ready for one child, but simply extends to accommodate two children. “We designed this stroller with a 5inch extension so that it can easily transition from a single stroller to a double,” says Varano. “The extension adds room for a second seat and offers a platform for toddlers to ride along. A second seat or infant car seat gives parents added functionality with a total of 22 ways to ride.” As an added benefit, the stroller features a multi-position reclining main seat that can convert to an infant bassinet or pram. This stroller is now exclusively available at Babies“R”Us.

4. Can the Stroller Accommodate Your Car Seat? An infant car seat and a stroller that come together are called a travel system. Buying a travel system is the simplest way to ensure stroller and infant car seat compatibility. However, if they don’t come together, you can often buy an adapter that connects them. Keep this in mind as you choose these items. 5. Is the Stroller Easy to Maneuver? Look for front wheels that swivel. This swivel action will make it easier to turn. Again, head to a store to test this feature out in person. You should be able to easily push the stroller in a straight line using one hand. Brakes also play a part in maneuverability.

You want brakes that are easy to operate even if you are wearing opentoed shoes. Finding the right stroller for your family requires research and testing. Investing the time beforehand and keeping key features top-of-mind during your search will make the process less overwhelming and hopefully lead you to your perfect stroller match.

The Fun of Reading By Angela J. Willard for Natural Baby Magazine

You don’t have to wait until your child can talk or read to get them into the fun of reading. Children love being read to, even while still in the womb. Read to your baby often and when they get older, make your reading time interactive by encouraging them to point to different things in the pages of the picture books you’re reading to them. Soon, they will love to read because of all the fun they are having interacting with you and the books. Don’t be surprised if they select a certain book, or a few, that they enjoy so much they want it read to them over and over and over…until you feel like a broken record. Don’t give up, keep on reading. That repetition is building up in their little brains and they are learning to memorize the sounds of the words you are reading to them, and soon they should be able to mimic those sounds and read along with you!

Izabella enjoying her favorite “Touch and Feel” picture book, “Farm Friends”.

Teaching your babies your favorite nursery rhymes is also a great way to enjoy special time with baby while teaching them new words as you sing the nursery rhymes to them on a regular basis, they will soon be singing along with you. A good source of free nursery rhymes and children’s stories is in the public domain–free to use. Here’s a couple links to free stories and rhymes to get you started: A list of children’s books: www.childrensbooksonline.org/librarycomplete_index.htm A list of nursery rhymes: pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Nursery_Rhy mes

Happy Reading! It is good to encourage your child to be interactive with the books during story time.

Love Your Baby’s Bum: Make Homemade Baby Wipes By Angela J. Willard for Natural Baby Magazine

Store bought baby wipes can be expensive and full of chemicals that we cannot even pronounce. To save money and go gentler on your baby’s bottom, opt for making your own. It’s easy! What You Need: ● 2-3 Pkgs of baby wash cloths (or cut your own from soft fabric) ● Gentle liquid baby bath soap (I use the Johnson & Johnson brand Calming Baby Bath) ● Pure Essential Lavender Oil ● Chamomile Tea ● A container to keep your wipes in

Make Your Wipes Prepare your baby wash cloths by folding each in half, then set the stack of them in the container for your wipes (an old wipes container works great! I use an electric warming wipe container to keep the wipes always warm) Brew a couple cups of Chamomile tea, add a squirt of the liquid baby bath soap of your choice, add a drop or two (not too much) of pure essential lavender oil and mix, then pour the mixture over the stack of wipes that are in the container. You now have homemade baby wipes! Your baby’s bum will love them, and you will love how they save you money!
