Pregnant? Forget Pickles and Reach for Pistachios

Results of a new study among pregnant women with impaired glucose intolerance during gestation (GIGT) or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) commonly known as gestational diabetes - show that eating pistachios may help manage blood sugar levels. The study is the first to evaluate the glucose response after consumption of pistachios in pregnant women with GDM or GIGT.

Diabetes is a chronic illness that affects more than 422 million people around the world. GDM develops in a pregnant woman who did not previously have diabetes. Like other types of diabetes, it affects how the body uses blood sugar. GIGT occurs when, during pregnancy, the body is unable to regulate blood glucose levels normally because of hormonal changes. The blood glucose levels rise beyond normal levels after a glucose challenge, but not high enough to warrant a diabetes diagnosis. While resolved after the baby is born, women with either GDM or GIGT have a greater risk of developing diabetes.

According to the latest diagnostic criteria established by the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy

Study Groups (IADPSG) in 2010, GDM prevalence was estimated at 9.8 to 25.5 percent worldwide.

"Our study is the first to show that eating pistachios may help women with gestational diabetes control their blood sugar levels after eating," said Sheng Ge, M.D., lead investigator, Chief Physician and Director of Clinical Nutrition at the Sixth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China, where the study was conducted. "The results highlight pistachios as a smart food choice for women with gestational diabetes as they aim to manage their illness."

In the study, 30 women with gestational diabetes (all between 24 and 28 gestational weeks) were randomly assigned to eat a breakfast of either 42 (Continued on page 6)

grams of pistachios (about 1/3 of a cup, or 1.5 servings) or 100 grams of whole wheat bread (two slices) after an overnight fast. The pistachios and whole wheat bread were matched for calories. Blood sugar and GLP-1, a key insulinproducing hormone, were measured every 30 minutes after the meal, up to 120 minutes. After seven days, the groups switched.

Blood sugar levels were significantly lower after consuming pistachios than they were after consuming whole wheat bread after 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 120 minutes. In fact, blood sugar levels after eating pistachios were comparable to baseline levels. In addition, GLP-1 levels were significantly higher after consumption of pistachios compared to whole wheat bread after 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 120 minutes.

The effect on insulin levels was even more dramatic. Blood insulin levels did not increase during the two hours after eating the pistachios. Again, both groups of women had a significantly lower rise in blood insulin levels at every time point measured after eating the pistachios than they did after eating whole wheat bread.

Division of Clinical Nutrition, University of California, Los Angeles. "This study shows pistachios can be a useful addition to the diet in order to maintain healthy blood sugar levels while providing essential nutrients to the mother and baby during this critical time."

Dr. Li added, "It's exciting to see solutions from whole foods that are also palatable to patients. They're much more likely to comply with a prescribed diet as a result of a diabetes diagnosis when the food is something they enjoy."

Pistachios have a low Glycemic Index (GI), are relatively high in fiber, healthy fats, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, all of which can benefit people with diabetes. Eating pistachios has a minimal effect on blood sugar levels after eating a meal and, when added to a carbohydrate-rich meal, they help minimize any spike in blood sugar. Source: BPT

"Elevated blood sugar during pregnancy not only impacts the mother's health, but it may also increase the baby's risk of developing diabetes," said Zhaoping Li, M.D., another study investigator and Professor of Medicine, Chief of the

Cristina’s Birth Story By Cristina Willard

Publisher’s Note: On December 16, 2016, the ultimate fulfillment of JOY came into my life–a tiny 5 pound 14 ounce bundle named Izabella Marie. She is not only my joy but my granddaughter, and the inspiration for Natural Baby Magazine. This month, Izabella turns one. It has been such a joy to watch her grow, learn and explore her world this past year. I look forward to the many years of joy ahead. To help celebrate her first birthday, My Cristina, holding newborn baby, Izabella. daughter, Cristina, is sharing her birth story. a regular cycle so I thought it was no big deal. But my mom urged them to do a pregnancy test, and to my surprise, it In the summer of 2016, I moved back came back positive. They set me up with home to Alaska. I soon became sick with an ultrasound right away and found I was bronchitis and ended up going to the ER. about four months along. While there, they noted I had not had a I was more shocked than anything period in some time, but I have never had that I was carrying this bundle of joy inside me–I had no idea. I cried happy and scared tears when I saw her little body on the ultrasound that day. My pregnancy was really easy. I never had morning sickness, I was never extremely tired, I was always full of energy and happiness.

Cristina had her first ultrasound the day she found out she was pregnant–almost four months.

When I had went into labor, I was in so much pain that I decided to get the epidural. It was probably the best decision I had ever made because the pain was so unbearable, I just wanted to go home.

with her to see what name I should give her. This month Izabella turns one and boy has this year gone by fast. She has grown so fast in just a short amount of time, and boy is she getting an attitude! After she was born, I took her first year of life off from work so I would not miss any of her firsts. I feel that was the best decision ever, to be able to spend the past year with her at home. Now I am back to work part time and planning her first birthday party! A year has gone by fast. NB Cristina in the hospital the night she went into labor.

However, once I got the epidural, the painful contractions were no longer painful, but the pushing took a long time because I couldn’t feel anything. The entire lower half of my body was numb. Later I learned from a friend that you could request a lower dose of the medicine used in the epidural, but I wasn’t given that option so I wasn’t aware of it. If I had to do it again, I would want to feel the pushing.

After Izabella was born, I forgot about the pain, and I was so happy to hold my precious baby in my arms. It amazes me what the body can do, grow a human being in nine months. My whole pregnancy I planned to name her Michaela, but when she was born and I saw her, she did not look like a Michaela to me, so looked like an Izabella! I am so happy that I named her Izabella…that I waited until I spent time

Real-mom Life Hacks for an Imperfectly Perfect Life Your house is spotless, your children are well behaved, and every night there's a beautiful home-cooked meal on the table. Just how do you do it? The answer: You don't. From 1960s how-to guides portraying the perfect mother to today's Pinterest-crazed super moms, there's always been pressure on women to do it all. But in reality, it's unrealistic, and moms today are saying: "That's OK." "Being a mom, you quickly learn to let go of trying to perfect every aspect of your life," says actress and mom Busy Philipps. "So rather than trying to perfect things, I rely on tools to simplify those chaotic moments, which allows me to

enjoy what matters - time with my kids ... and my sanity." With that mantra in mind, Philipps is sharing some of her favorite life hacks. Here are a few secrets for moms - both beginners and seasoned - for getting things done and enjoying life's good moments: Make me-time and them-time: "It's so important to master me-time!" says Philipps. "Nothing beats getting up early for a good workout before starting the day. Want to really maximize a workout? Plug in your headphones, stream your favorite show, and get your heartbeat pumping while catching up on those episodes you missed! Another secret? Include your kids in 'me-time' once in a

while for a 'them-time' session. Manis and pedis with my girls is always a fun outing where we can spend quality time together."

Minimize laundry time: "Never-ending laundry is a never-ending headache. I love my LG SideKick washing machine, which is a pedestal washer attached to my main washer," says Philipps. "It's perfect for washing those small laundry loads that are a big deal and can't wait from a soccer uniform to delicates and activewear. You can also wash two loads at the same time when you need to: large loads in the main front-load washer and delicates - like my favorite workout clothes - in the LG SideKick, which is a huge time saver."

the real world this can feel like fighting a losing battle. Philipps' solution: Try using a little trick psychology. "Think of ways to transform cleaning into a competition," she says. "Who can toss the dirtiest clothes into the baskets? Who can make their bed faster? Who can match more pairs of clean socks from the laundry in 60 seconds or less? Kids will race to win, all while helping you get those chores done." "Being a parent can get messy, but obviously we wouldn't want it any other way," says Philipps. "Tricks like these help me accept that life's not perfect, which is okay because life's good. And good is great!"

Source: BPT

Cut cooking chaos: "Forget the foodie frenzy," Philipps stresses. "If you can pull together a simple and nutritious meal for the family, you are a superstar. This doesn't require slaving away for hours in the kitchen. Internet search one-pan recipes. When time is really crunched, there's no shame in takeout. Trust me, everyone does it." And her healthy eating tip? "I get my kids to eat healthy by hiding nutritious food - like broccoli pureed into spaghetti sauce - so they don't even know they are eating it. A page from a book I swear by: Jessica Seinfeld's popular cookbook, 'Deceptively Delicious.'"

Create a healthy competition: In a perfect world, your kids would enjoy helping with all the household chores. In

The Benefits of Interactive Technology for Your Child and You

I

nteracting with your children is one of the best parts of being a parent and it's no surprise that many people report looking for toys this holiday season that incorporate interactive technology. Are you one of them? If you are, then you know you're looking for the kind of technology that involves you and engages, motivates, teaches, surprises and sparks the imagination of your child. The benefits of this interaction are considerable.

University of Washington, Temple University and the University of Delaware studied 2-year-olds who effectively learned new verbs, either through training face-to-face with a person or via live video chat technology such as Skype. The study found children learned new words only when conversing with a person live or in the video chat, both of which involve responsive social interactions. These findings highlight the importance of a more interactive and responsive approach to learning language.

Interaction key to helping develop children's minds Responsive interactions are the key to a toddler's ability to increase their vocabulary and a baby's ability to learn language, according to a study by the Society for Research in Child Development. Researchers at the

One creative, technology "toy" that's being introduced this year to support these findings is Chappet, a 2-inch, round yellow speaker button that's controlled by a smartphone app. Chappet allows parents or caregivers to interact

with a child through a stuffed animal that adorns the button by supplying their own voice via voice or text chat. Chappet can also support more than 1,000 prerecorded phrases, features 20 prerecorded songs and stories and its auto chat function can mimic the words a child shares with it in conversation, allowing children to interact with their toys in an entirely new way. "You can be in another room or right next to them on the couch," said Naoki Ono, Chappet Development Team Leader. "They won't know it's you unless you tell them because Chappet allows parents or loved ones to become the voice of the child's plush toy that involves fun, responsive, back-and-forth social and creative interactions. Children also will laugh aloud when they find out their best friend plush is mimicking them." The Chappet speaker button can be sewn on or attached with a string to loop it around the stuffed animal's neck like a necklace. It does not need a battery since it is rechargeable, and because of its size, is safe for little children.

Dec. 3. Visit www.Kickstarter.com and search for Chappet or click here where Chappet will be offered at up to 30 percent off retail price. Take the time to learn more about this and other interactive solutions available for your child this holiday season. Because, as the research shows, a little interaction can go a long, long way.

Learning more about new options to interact with your child With a successful launch in Japan last year, Chappet is launching a project on Kickstarter to fund the development of the English version of the app and introduce Chappet to kids in the U.S. The campaign will last three weeks, ending

Raising Eager Readers Inspire Your Little Ones to Love Reading

I

t can be difficult for parents to know exactly when to start teaching their children how to identify colors and numbers or when the right time is to start reading to them. However, the earlier parents begin reading to their kids, the better prepared they can be once they reach school age. In fact, reading to children at home can set them up for success in school and in life, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics. With the right resources, parents can influence their kids' enjoyment of reading. These tips from the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program, which aims to motivate kindergarten through sixth-grade students to read by rewarding them with praise and pizza, can help inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Read to your children early and often. Parental involvement is one of the best predictors of future academic achievement, according to research published in the Journal of Prevention & Intervention in the Community. Getting into a routine of reading to your children at a young age is a habit that can be pivotal to developing a love of reading. As you read, point out words, colors and images and ask questions about the story to help children develop a deeper understanding and relate what they have learned back to other books and activities.

Regularly visit the library. Libraries typically have lists available of favorite

NB14 Natural Baby Magazine | Dec. 2017 Š 2017 Publish In Paradise www.NaturalBabyMag.com

books for various age groups and can help parents and kids create reading lists of stories that match reading levels and interests. Additionally, attending "story times" and other library activities tailored to age-specific target audiences can expose your child to new books.

Make books easily accessible. Having multiple locations in the home where you keep books can inspire children to pick one up any time. Start with a main bookshelf in your child's room that lets him or her easily see the titles, and place additional book storage locations in

different rooms where your family typically spends the most time.

Get comfy. Creating the perfect spot (or spots) to read has a lot to do with individual children. While some prefer to read with mom and dad in a chair or on a couch, others prefer their own space where they can cuddle up with a good book. If space allows, consider dedicating a corner of your child's bedroom or playroom as a "book nook."

Take advantage of technology. The use of technology can aid in creating excitement about reading. To help develop strong reading habits and enhance your child's vocabulary and ability to comprehend, consider supplementing traditional books with devices such as e-readers and tablets or smartphones equipped with ageappropriate reading and learning applications.

Keep reading. Children often see their parents as role models. If you read often,

your children will be more likely to pick up the habit, as well, according to a BOOK IT! survey. It revealed that adults who have gone through the program are more likely to establish regular reading routines with their families, as 54 percent of the survey respondents said they read with their children every day, compared to 32 percent who did not participate in the program.

What to Expect If Your Child Needs Ear Tube Surgery

E

ar tube surgery is one of the most common pediatric procedures in the United

States, with more than half a million surgeries performed each year. In fact, by age 3, approximately 1 in 15 children will have had ear tubes. Dr. Robert Bridge, Chief of Otolaryngology at Honor Health in Phoenix, Arizona, says, "In my practice, we see hundreds of children

What is ear tube surgery? Ear tube surgery is a common procedure usually performed by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor in which ear tubes (tiny, hollow cylinders usually made of plastic or metal) are placed into the eardrum, allowing ventilation to the middle ear. This airway helps alleviate the accumulation of fluid behind the eardrum.

each year who will need ear tube surgery, and despite how common the surgery is, as parents, we tend to worry." So if you are one of the many parents whose child needs ear tube surgery, read on to learn more about what Dr. Bridge says you can expect leading up to and following the procedure.

Who is a candidate for ear tube surgery? Did you know one of the most common complications of the cold or flu is ear infections? Children who experience frequent ear infections in both ears are (Continued on page 18) common

candidates for ear tube surgery because this fluid build-up in the middle ear can lead to hearing loss or speech problems. Additionally, the average age of ear tube patients is between 1 and 3 years old.

What can I expect after my child has ear tube surgery? Immediately following surgery, your child may be groggy, grumpy or tired. Each child recovers differently, but after surgery, it's a good idea to take a day off from your normal routine to allow your child time to relax and recover. Children are typically prescribed antibiotic eardrops that must be given multiple times a day, over several days. But these eardrops can come with challenges. Dr. Bridge states that many parents call or return at a post-op visit expressing difficulties administering the eardrops along with the uncertainty that they are administering the medication accurately and completely. However, ENT doctors now have an alternative treatment option available, where the prescription antibiotic is actually placed in the middle ear at the time of ear tube surgery. If your ENT is recommending ear tube surgery, see if this antibiotic treatment may be an option for your

How will ear tube surgery affect my child? Once the middle ear is rid of excess fluid, your child may become more sensitive to noise. "But it's important to remember children are resilient," said Dr. Bridge. "While you may notice a change in your child's hearing, I typically find that by days two and three, parents report their child is back to enjoying their normal activities and are satisfied with the surgery." If your child's ENT recommends ear tube surgery this cold and flu season, here is a quick list of questions to ask your doctor before surgery: ● How many hours before the procedure should my child stop eating or drinking? ● How soon will I be able to join my child after surgery? ● How soon can my child take a bath or go swimming? ● Are there any particular activities my child should avoid after surgery? For how long? ● How soon after surgery will we need to schedule a follow-up appointment? ● Do you offer an antibiotic treatment option that you give during ear tube surgery so I don't have to give ear drops at home? The Lather & Lights soap and candle company in Little Rock, Arkansas sent us these wonderful bath soaps, made especially for babies, to review. They also sent extras for our giveaways. You can learn more about the giveaway of this “Rubber Ducky” baby bath soap on page 16. All of our reviews are “tried & true” and we did video the review for this bath soap, which is in production now. Watch for the video review on our blog.

Izabella LOVED this “Quack U Wack” Baby Bath Soap and kept trying to grasp the slippery duck soap and had a lot of fun just trying to hold onto it! She also tried to bite into it at one point and she learned quickly that it is not food! We are thankful that this soap is made from all-natural, non-toxic ingredients that are safe for baby. But it is best to keep it from baby’s mouth!

The presentation of the product could be better. The wrapping and labeling looks handmade and unprofessional. We received another soap, “Cupcake” (that we look forward to giving to other lucky winners in the future) that did not look as appealing as the soap with the rubber duck shape; however, it is made from the same gentle products so we have no problem using it on baby’s sensitive skin. The product itself is wonderful and we will continue to use this soap with Izabella–she certainly enjoyed her bath with the rubber ducky soap (named Quack U Wack on the Lather & Lights website). Now when I browsed the website, I had a hard time finding the soap–I had to look through many pages of candles to find it, so will provide a direct link for you. The website could use categories to make it easier to go directly to the soaps. The soaps would make great gifts for baby showers and, of course, the holidays. our baby’s sleep schedule may be pretty routine in her first few months, but as she grows she may change her schedule, and needs you to adapt to her growing needs. She may sleep more through the night, may nap less during the day and may even fall asleep in her highchair! As parents, it’s important to be intune with our little one’s changing needs. As her diet changes and her body grows in spurts, her sleep patterns will also change many times throughout her first year. In the latter months of that first year when she is enjoying playtime, being read to, watching the family pets at play, her tiny brain is soaking up enormous amounts of information, which will tire her out. She is enjoying all the attention,

all the learning and the play times, so she doesn’t want to sleep–and she will fight it. While your little one is in the fighting sleep mode, try a new bedtime routine– rocking and singing lullabies, nurse or give a bottle or pacifier (if you use one), or read a sleepy-time story, give your infant a foot massage, or other soothing routine to encourage sleep. Sleep deprivation is not healthy, not for parents or their babies, but especially for babies since their brains are growing and they are learning so much, it’s important that they are getting all the sleep they need, when they need it. Be sure to watch for your baby’s changing sleep schedules and adapt to them, which means a change in your routines and schedules, to ensure your little one is getting the best sleep possible, for her brain health. The QuickZip company sent us a wonderful crib sheet set for Izabella to try out. They were very thoughtful and not only sent her a pink set (perfectly matching her room) but they added a special pink mink-like fleece sheet to help keep her warm here in Alaska. Look for the upcoming video review on our blog.

The QuickZip Crib Zip-On Sheet Set is a very clever way to end the sheet nightmare–and they have sets for us adults as well! These ingenious sheets zip on and off of the base sheet set that wraps around your entire mattress. Once you get the base on (for a crib mattress, it was very easy) then you just zip on the top sheet of your choice. We chose to start with the very soft mink-like fleece sheet. All the sheets are interchangeable, giving you the ability to mix and match fabrics and colors. These are not only perfect for your hoe, but for a daycare where there are many babies using cribs– they are easily zipped off for a quick wash. Then you can select a different color when changing the sheet–say change a pink sheet for a blue? And

Izabella Ap proved! without having to lift the mattress! Now that makes changing sheets a snap (or a zip!) and no longer a dreaded chore. These delightfully soft sheets are made from 100% cotton and are preshrunk, so you know every time you take this sheet from the dryer, it’s still going to zip right back on. We honestly don’t have a negative thing to say about these sheets–and Izabella loves the soft feel. The first thing she did was feel the softness with her hand. We can see that she approves of the QuickZip Crib Zip-On Sheet Set. These would make perfect gift for new parents and grandparents –for anyone who has a crib.
