Just when you think you’re safe, a recent nationwide survey has uncovered that a majority of American homes are dangerously under-protected when it comes to fire and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Even those equipped with smoke and CO alarms are at risk according to the study, which revealed that two thirds of U.S. households are not in compliance with the national recommendation for the number of smoke alarms set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Even more alarming is the 90 percent of homes that do not meet the recommendation for number of carbon monoxide detectors, including 40 percent that report having zero working carbon monoxide detectors. “These statistics confirm what we’ve feared for years - that far too many homes in this country are not as well protected as they should be against the dangers of fire and CO,” says Deborah Hanson, director of external affairs for First Alert, a leader in residential fire and CO detection devices. “What’s more troubling is that many people don’t realize that their families are at risk.” For those in need of new smoke and CO alarms, a wide variety of innovative products are available with an assortment of features to meet different needs. Fall Yard Cleanup It’s that time of year when we begin cleaning up our yards and preparing for the upcoming winter. The areas that most commonly need attention are trees and shrubs, the lawn, and vegetable or flower gardens. Trees and shrubs often need to be trimmed back in the fall, though this will vary, depending on the type of plant. If you’re unsure when to trim your trees or bushes, consult a gardening book or online resource. If your trees are taller than 10 or 15 feet, it’s best not to take the risk of doing the job yourself. Look for a qualified arborist who can do the work for you, and be sure to check out some references before hiring anyone to do the work. This can also be a good time to remove any old or dying trees, as well. Rake up all the fallen leaves and any other debris from your lawn. There are many types of leaf bagging devices on the market today that can make this job easier, such as leaf bag holders or special tarps designed to collect leaves and other debris while you are raking. Once all the leaves are removed, it’s important to do one final mowing at the end of the year. A fall lawn application is also a good idea. Visit your local garden center or nursery for a recommendation of what type of product to use.

The last area that will require some fall attention is your garden and planting areas. Your work here will vary depending on what types of plants you’re working with. In the case of annuals, especially annual vegetable plants, it’s best to remove the plants entirely at the end of the growing season. Some vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes, if left to rot in the cool fall weather, can transmit fungal diseases into the soil. Once annual plants are removed, now is a good time to till the soil and add any fertilizers such as organic matter or other soil amendments. Finish the area off by adding a thick layer of mulch.

7 Ways to Bless Your Children We, as a nation, are attempting to recover from a huge economic bailout. But what are we doing to recover from “family bankruptcy” and give ourselves a “family blessing bailout?” First, “Dedicate Yourself to The Lord as a Parent!” In Genesis 17:1, Abraham was instructed to “Walk blameless before the Lord.” In Deuteronomy 6:4-7, Israel was first commanded to “love the Lord with all their hearts, soul, and strength,” (v-5), and then to “teach their children” (v-7). Secondly, we should “Bring Our Children to A Personal Faith In God Early In Life.” In Matthew 9:14, Jesus rebuked the disciples and said, “Do not hinder the children from coming to me…” Research indicates that if a child does not decide to follow Jesus by age 14, there is only a 4 % chance that they ever will! Third, “Teach Your Children That God Has A Plan For Their Lives.” Whether it is God using your children when they are young like Josiah, Joash, Samuel, or, the little lad with the few fish and loaves, or God’s development of their young lives for later in life, God has a great plan for them (Jer 29:11). Polycarp was converted at age 9; Jonathan Edwards at age 7; Isaac Watts at age 9; Corrie Ten Boom at age 5.

Isaiah 28:10, instructs us to teach the Word of God, “line upon line, precept upon precept.” Weissmuller went on to compete in two Olympics, winning metals because he learned to swim within the lines. Save your children from going astray or crooked in life, by teaching them the scripture! Fifth, we must “Protect Our Children from Ungodly Influences.” Media, music, misguided hero’s, and misbehaving friends can “ruin good morals” (I Cor 15:33). Proverbs 10:8 informs us that “He that breaks his own hedge will be bitten by a serpent.” Hedge up the protection around your children, and do not allow the enemy of their soul to come near! Sixth, “We Should Pray For Our Children.” In Genesis 18, Abraham interceded for his family, and God spared Lot. Be a spiritual leader and priesthood of all believers (I Peter 2:9), and pray for the Lord to “bless them, your children, and keep them, to make his face shine upon them; and be gracious unto them; to lift up his countenance upon them and give them peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
